Bexhill Shiplu Tandoori in Rother

Slightly strange situation as we went to a charity quiz with a total of 45 people, this was all prearranged and as we travelled a distance and allowed for the unexpected hold-up we were first, even before the organisers had arrived. I in particular was already on the backfoot as I'd looked on here to see what to expect and found the recent reports to be less than flattering. We were greeted in a friendly manner and shown to the table allocated to our names, being early our initial drink order was served very quickly along with poppadom's. Others arrived and filled the tables. The food was served as a buffet in heated pans, I fail to recall what was in them all but as there must have been at least 15 and my plate simply wasn't big enough to 'have a bit of everything'. Each and every element of the meal was delicious, all was nicely cooked and tasty, the meat content being tender and seemingly freshly cooked (unlike many similar restaurants where meat seems to be pre-cooked and chucked in the sauce to heat through). Being a fixed price buffet the included dessert was a bowl of grapes and orange segments which rounded the meal off quite nicely, some elected to have desserts from the regular menu. The staff were all friendly and efficient, at times a touch slow but with 45 diners reaching the same point of the meal at the same time it was inevitable and the minor delay was acceptable. I can't think of any downsides to our evening and all of our table made very positive comments. Reading the previous negative reports I can only think something must have gone wrong at that time

We received excellent service and great food….. one of the best Dhansak’s you could taste… Aloo Chat Bhajees and Korma all great all fresh… a traditional indian restaurant friendly and welcoming, Bexhill’s best!

Had a lovely curry last night with the family, Curry was delicious and freshly cooked. Nice restaurant decor and friendly staff. Would highly recommend!

The food was bland and pretty tasteless. Even the chilli sauce didn't have any flavour.. ...and to charge £5 for a lime & soda is a total rip off! Won't be back.

Never will i use this restaurant again, after a long time NOT using it(,as it had become so poor on quality of food, & diabolical service) i thought i would call for a delivery, only for the phone to be answered by a SHOUT of "Shiplu" to which i replied, can i order a take away please? "What you want"... the person was rude, arrogant, unhelpful, & obviously did not want to take my order as he continued in this manner, until he then yelled " can't hear you, speak up".. I suggest they learn some simple manners, & remember they are not the once great "The only curry restaurant in the area"... they are not, there are others that are so much better... & treat their paying customers with respect.

Ordered loads of times, always been our Indian takeout of choice, we accept the Long waits not an issue, but if someone takes the Order you’d expect them to get it right. So if you order chicken tikka masala, and get a korma you’d obviously expect them to get it right the second time, so guy turned up with a second korma not the masala!!! I mean is it really that Difficult shiplu.

We ordered a take away meal from this restaurant last night and was bitterly disappointed. Indian curries are generally noted for their spices and flavourings depending on individual taste. However, when the meals arrived, they turned out to be extremely bland, dull and almost flavourless to the point that we wondered if the chef had forgotten to add any spices and seasoning or that the restaurant had simply run out. We have previously ordered take away meals from this establishment before where the food has been better - however, the quality of food can be inconsistent. We will not be using this establishment again as this was the final straw!

Super Duper Food and Service…Fast efficient staff very courteous and loved that the owner offered us an extra dish of their personal favourite menu .. Definitely going again

My brother and I had the pleasure of dining at this charming and spacious restaurant. The service was prompt, the food was 1st class, and the ambiance very appealing. The exterior is grand and opulent. The interior is superbly decorated and inviting, with a warm welcome greeting on arrival. The smells of food were mouthwatering and we were not disappointed. Authentic flavours and great portions. Cannot give a higher recommendation. A1+

I have had many Indian meals from different restaurants but the meal I was presented with at the Shiplu restaurant. London road Bexhill was fantastic full of flavour and made with care as for the chefs special Biryani one small tasting and I was catapulted into a world of flavour ecstasy seriously good

We are regulars here and we have never had a bad meal. Staff are excellent Highly recommended restaurant Owner is amazing and right on the ball. Always look forward to going to Shiplu.

Ordered a home delivery which took over 2 hours to arrive and when it did the key meat dish was missing from the order. Their telephone response to this was bordering on rudeness. We then had to take the takeaway back to Shiplu restaurant to get our money back. We have been customers of Shiplu for over 15 years, but we will now be taking our business elsewhere. As other reviews show the service has deteriorated in recent years, this restaurant has lost its way.

Shiplu was the first restaurant we decided to order from during the lockdown and I have to say we made the best decision! We ordered some onion bajis, chicken rezala, Dansak and other tremendous dishes. All recieved piping hot! The manager was so kind and even gave us some free poppadoms! I been going to Shiplu from 2006 day by day the food is getting tester and tester . Now days it’s been so lovely service and clean restaurant and very friendly staff to. Food portions are very big we are so lucky to have this Shiplu in bexhill it will make us to go again and again thank you so much for giving wonderful service and food tonight .

My wife and I usually dine in at the lovely restaurant but decided to order a takeaway tonight. I have to say, even the takeaway lives up to our expectation, I was thoroughly impressed by the quality of the food and even more so happy to recieve a small care package with the meal. This restaurant really cares about the little things!

Not the best meal out we have had. Unfortunately it seems like the deliverys get preference over those who choose to dine in.We waited 1 hour for our food to arrive and then not all of it turned up at the same time!Staff are nice but customer service is lacking.When we had finished our main meal the bill was brought to us without them even offering coffee's or puddings.Not many people dining in for a Saturday night.

Food was wonderful and staff was very care and friendly and very safe to go when we have Covid 19 problems in east Sussex because restaurant is very clean and staff are clean too. We will be going again soon I got disabled access to go in have food drink and enjoy.

We used to be regulars but due to mixed quality of dishes and always really delayed deliveries we have not used Shiplu for few years. We decided to give it a go again. I liked my dish but my wife did not as it tasted like tomatoes purée with hints of chilli. Our firiends who prefer Shiplu liked theirs. However one thing we all agreed on is that prices are absolutely insane! Few papadoms and dips was priced at £15! This was followed by 4 standard dishes, 2 rice and sag aloo, taking this to the total of nearly £65! Honestly?

The shiplu is really nice Inside and the service is excellent. But the take away service is awful missing orders and long waits 3 hours is just too long to wait for food

We ordered a take away last week in light of the lock down and as regular customers at the Shiplu we were extremely disappointed by both the quality and ingredients. I had a chicken Koli Moil and some of the chicken was not completely cooked and could not be eaten! My partners dhansak was bland and cold. I certainly won't be eating from there in the near future!

We ordered a takeaway for two a simple order . Two sides , two mains etc .Food arrived a little later than expected but not much . First one of the mains were missing and the rest was cold . Not cool absolutely stone cold . Prawn balti was a strange colour for a balti and the prawns an unnatural shade of pink. I was going to risk eating it as I could smell the fish above anything else My husband rung up to say a main was missing and also it was very cold .The man who answered the phone said come and collect it , driver has gone and managed to avoid answering the questions about it being cold by taking our number and telling us the manager will ring back before quickly hanging up . Surprise surprise we are still waiting.If you want to spend nearly £35 on a meal you can’t eat order from here

As regulars of the shiplu we wasn't expecting a bad night as its always been great, but when we arrived people we're complaining about waiting so long for food, something we were about to find out ourselves, someone took our drinks orders and we didn't see them again for 20mins,another 30mins for the poppadoms it was well over an hr for our starters to arrive a couple on another table had enough and walked out, we asked where our mains were and within minutes of our complaint it arrived, the food was great but the service was truly terrible.We asked for our food to be boxed up so we could take it home only to find half of it hadn't been boxed up and our deserts had been forgotten about, I think we'll try somewhere else next time shame they were great before.

Good food, pleasant staff and will not break the bank. Menu online. (I have to write 100 characters in this field! ).

Visited with friends and didn't book..decor hasn't changed since the last time I visited a few years ago. Not very busy at all. Service was ok. Food was well presented and was quite tasty. My friend asked for a curry but asked for it to be made a little milder which the waiter said they would do but it came out very hot. The atmosphere was very quiet and the music was rather dull.My friend asked if there was any other music but was told no as the manager chose the music. I thought it was quite an expensive meal over all. It will be a while before I return.

I have been visiting this restaurant for more years than I like to remember the food is always good and if you are looking for a good Indian this is a good place to go

Banquet night, there were 14 of us, could not fault the food and service, all was amazing. The portion sizes even beat those with the larger appetite .... great that we were able to take home what was left. Thank you. A thoroughly enjoyable evening.

A pleasant restaurant with lots of small partitioned areas so you can have some privacy. Everything is very clean and table presentation is good. As for the food, there was quite a variety. You could get the standard items you get anywhere, plus a varied range of speciality dishes that didn't look like they all came out of the same sauce pot. Prices were a little above average, but the food was enjoyable. Service was fine and you can park outside one of the builders merchants around the corner on Beeching Road - the second one alone on the right, I believe.

They should go back to just a restaurant service they clearly cannot keep up with the demand ... last three orders via just eat I have had to complain, missing items, cold food, stale food, watery flavourless takes daal... gave them benefit of doubt every time due to long standing customer but beyond a joke. I won’t be ordering again and I suggested none of my family or friends in Bexhill do either

We ordered from here a couple of days ago. New to the area we’ve been looking for a decent take away. The delivery was late - took about an hour and 15 mins. BUT I tell you - it was worth the wait. Everything we ordered was piping hot and delicious. The chicken was succulent. The lamb so tender it just broke away. The little touch of a small bag of sweets was welcome too. Definitely will be using Shiplu again.

No really atmosphere in this restaurant, decor needs updating as has been the same way for years. The food was nice but the customer service was poor. Restaurant was half empty yet they couldn't provide us with much hospitality.

Wow!! We had heard that this restaurant was really good so decided as it's not too far away we would try it for our 32nd wedding Anniversary. We decided to go for the special weds/Thurs banquet (see pic) I had garlic chicken tikka for starter, hubby had chicken chaat. For main I had chicken tikka korma with pilau rice, hubby had chicken tikka masala also with pilau rice. We also had a sag aloo, onion bahjee and a garlic nan. All I can say is wow, the food was amazing! As u can see by the pictures this was what we had left after eating a full plate of food each. We finished with a mango kulfi and we couldn't fit another thing in. Indian food is our favourite and as we have travelled across the UK we have tried many different restaurants in London, Manchester, Hastings, Eastbourne etc and this knocks spots off them all. This restaurant is now our firm favourite (wish we had found it years ago) everything about it we couldn't fault! The staff were very friendly and welcoming, the atmosphere is cosy and intimate but above all the food is excellent with a capital E. We will definitely be returning and would thoroughly recommend it 5*s for sure.

Had a delivery tonight and the mango sauce was either gone off or it smells like it’s been mixed with alcohol. And we received the Wrong rice. Second time we have ordered and something has been wrong. So disappointed as this is usually my regular.

This restaurant is in a very scruffy street but once inside it has a good atmosphere. The menu is excellent and good prices. For an Indian eatery this is one of the best.

Party of 7 booked in advance. Table wasn't ready when we arrived. Once seated it took a good 10mins before we were asked about drinks. We didn't have starters and the meal took 90mins to arrive. The waiter was very young and didn't know what the dishes were. One of the orders was wrong. The place was empty yet we were left to fend for ourselves, had to get up to find someone to order more drinks. The food was bland and the sag pioneer was like soup. The wallpaper was hanging of the wall behind us an the toilets were smelly and floor wet. All in all a very bad experience. I used to like this restaurant but will not be returning any time soon

Another fantastic visit and I found a new favourite dish - murgli special. Food is alway really good. Service is friendly and attentive. They were more than happy to package our leftovers up without any problem.

We have used the Shiplu for years, they are consistant. Always good portions, hot and tasty. Any probs they will sort it. Friendly staff which makes it a good experience. A must try if you are new to Bexhill x

The food is very tasty. It beats lots of other Indians in the area. I have used it as my Indian takeaway of choice since discovering it. Good flavours, well cooked and hot upon pick up.

Had been a few times before first time was excellent went back for mums birthday, that poor my brother complained. So to be fair we tried again it was ok better than second time. Service was quick, perhaps too quick? Parking is strange as a lot of cars on the pavement outside. Seems to attract loud “loads of money” clientele Over heard the staff giving a description of the other Indian restaurants in the town and claimed to be the best.

Visiting family so ordered a Friday night takeaway via the just eat app. This restaurant was recommended for the area. Very quick delivery, approx 20 mins, menu offered all the dishes we wanted and tasted very nice. The chicken was good quality and not pre formed liked some Indians. Good value especially with a 15% discount through the just eat app for Mother’s Day. Would use again.

Classic curry hut decor, usual menu. My chicken curry had more quartered onions than meat. They seem to do a lot of takeaway. Uninspiring.

I ordered a take away for delivery on Saturday. I ordered chicken tikka korma. It was disgusting, the food tasted water, then I could understand why as half my plate was filled with water. I took a photo of it and put it on Facebook. I definitely won't be going back there in a hurry. I spent £26 I expect better for my money

Enjoyed a delicious lunch with friends. This restaurant has been established for many years and the Mayor of Bexhill, Cllr Abul Azad, owns it. The food was excellent, everything was served really hot and we couldn't fault the food. Always like the complimentary fresh orange segments and grapes to clean the palette. Ahmed attended to us with a great welcome and his staff were all very helpful.

Ordered to treat my family. Normally order from the Taj Mahal but they said to try here, won’t be making that mistake again. Garlic nan had no garlic, Bombay potato’s so bland - they had no flavour at all. Half the chicken was pink so didn’t eat it !!! Won’t be ordering again - waste of money, feel ill now cause I’m worried about the chicken!

Just had a takeaway delivered and was a bit worried about some of the recent reviews before ordering.

We were told delivery would take 45 minutes to an hour. Finally arrived an hour and a half later after we chased it twice. Delivery driver was very pleasant and offered his apologies. Food was tasty and hot enough. This would've been 5 star review if we hadn't had to chase it.

Food was great staff very polite ,helpful.Has a very good reputation our friends a taxi driver and was told how good this place was.Good value hope it stays the same .Will go back there.

We ordered our food at 5.25 and were told an hour for delivery, it finally turned up at 7.10 after I phoned twice to chase it, I was told it was sitting in the restaurant ready to be delivered because of this we had cold rice and naan bread and lukewarm curry, very disssapointing.

We went on a Saturday night with 10 friends for our Christmas meal. There were only 2 other tables occupied in the restaurant. So it certainly wasn’t busy .

Ordered a delivery at 6.30, delivered at 8.20 with no indication it would be so late....and it was cold. I have been a loyal customer for years, but this will be my last order. My last order was also cold, but I chose to give them the benefit of the doubt.....not again. Very poor customer service. My order had clearly sat there for a long time to have got so cold.

This used to be the best restaurant for Indian food in the local area a long time ago but I don’t know what has happened as it has gone downhill so far now it is such a shame.

The first issue with this restaurant was that the website stated parking was around the corner when in fact the location of the car park had changed. We only found this out when we got into the restaurant and then had to go out again and move our car to the correct area. The restaurant was clean with a nice ambience but it took an hour and a half after our arrival for our food to be served. No explanation - no offer of drinks while we waited. When we complained we were told they had a big order at another table. No apology and no discount. Food was average only . Will not go here again .

Had a takeaway from here tonight. Couldn't even eat it, so bad. My girlfriend didn't like hers either. The naan is soggy. The curry flavourless and the meat chewy. Probably the worst curry I have ever eaten.

I ordered for the first time from this restaurant and what a mistake. The manager was rude, insulting and very unprofessional and refused to give me a refund so I had to make 2 calls to just eat to sort it out. I wish I had read the reviews first and I certainly won’t be ordering again!

Four of us went to the Wednesday evening Banquet Night and had a fantastic meal. It was excellent value for money at only £14.95 per head, and there was more food than we could manage (and some of us had huge appetites!). The service was excellent, and we were made to feel very welcome. The restaurant had a lovely atmosphere. I would highly recommend this restaurant for anyone who wants to go for an Indian meal in Bexhill. We will definitely be going back there, especially on a Wednesday evening.

Brought my family here twice and both times I found that the waiter was very rude (bearing in mind they were both different people) it’s a shame because the food is delicious, however I will not be returning to be treated the way they treated us, very disappointing. The cups had lipstick stains, complained and didn’t even get an apology, told I couldn’t take the rest of my food home, this place would be much more successful with new staff

We had been recommended to try the Shiplu after previously (5 years ago) vowing we wouldn't go back. Unfortunately nothing has changed, the food is tasteless and the only way to determine the difference between chicken and king prawns is by the texture! - what we were given was, sauce accompanying tasteless meat. In fairness the Shish Kebab starter was nice but the Lamb Tikka was again tasteless. This was a great pity because the decor is nice and the staff above average.

Every time we visit Sussex we MUST have a Shiplu visit, would be a sin not to . The food and service is always good. Always eat too much , but it is so hard to know what to choose, so we do tend to go OTT. We have never been disappointed, whether we have dined in the restaurant or had a takeaway.

Really beautiful interior, and plenty of space so don’t usually need to book. Great variety and food is always hot and delicious, great for friends. Also, the takeaway from here is just as good, and always arrives before you expect it, never had a late delivery

Its become a bit of an institution in Bexhill. You either love it or hate it.

I've been regularly getting takeaways from Shiplu since 2002 and used to consider it one of the best curry shops that I'd been to. Sadly of late it has really gone downhill, and the last takeaway (25/3/18) was bang average, despite my order being one of the first of the evening (5.30pm), they'd got it wrong, resulting to my having to return to the shop to collect the correct order, sometimes things go wrong on a busy Friday / Sat night, but at 5.30pm with an empty restaurant. Very poor.

Another great experience at the Shiplu slick services great food even with some special dietary requirements nothing was a problem. Will keep coming back
