Nice hotel friendly service from staff we encountered. Our room on second floor had fairly low ceiling in part which would be a problem if you were tall! Breakfast was pleasant our waitress was lovely. Good location in Rye easy access to all of interest

Such great service from the team at The Hope Anchor! When the hotel informed me that due to unforeseen maintenance circumstances outside of their control my reservation needed to be cancelled, they really went the extra mile to help me find and book another hotel in the area through their personal network. They even helped arrange the new booking and were very professional and friendly throughout the process - especially Rachel, who kept me continuously updated, and Danielle. In the end, I was unable to make the trip for personal reasons, but just based on this experience I would definitely book them again in the future!

Nice views from main bar area, bright and cheerful on a sunny day, alas the card machine was down when we visited but was up and running when we left, toilets are down a flight of steep stairs so be aware of this after a few ales. Harvey beer on tap of course, friendly staff and comfortable bar to chat and enjoy Rye.

Unfortunately when eating my meal a customer on the next table was sick on his plate staff came over on the request of the family to give him a bucket then left, no attempt was made to move us when they could see we felt uncomfortable. (That's being polite) Don't get me wrong I'm not having a go at the customer who obviously wasn't well enough to move. We got up and moved ourselves to the bar leaving my food. After calling the manager over to let him know my food was left he then said not my fault and what do you want me to do about it these things happen. I found him very rude and totally unsympathetic that our night was ruined. Paying of the bill was also a uncomfortable situation with them over charging us of £22 which we challenged a new bill was done with a service charge on which again we challenged. No apologies or discount given for my left meal. Will not return there are plenty of other eating establishments in the village with a better attitude.

We stayed midweek, from Tuesday to Friday, in the "Hope and Anchor." in Rye. The hotel staff were exceptionally polite and friendly during our stay and gave us a great welcome. They had a great knowledge of where to go and what to do in Rye. The staff were very attentive and went out of their way to ensure that we were comfortable. The hotel had traditional styled bedrooms. Our room was clean and comfortable with ensuite facilities, tea and coffee making facilities, tv etc. It had great views of Rye and the surrounding country side. It was cleaned on a daily basis. Our breakfast was extremely good, with a choice of a cooked breakfast, or a continental style breakfast. The food was locally sourced. The location of the hotel is ideal for a walk around Rye. The hotel has great historic importance in the history of Rye. I would recommend a stay in this beautiful hotel and definitely a return visit.

Fab room, great staff, but unless you want to get around the local parking restrictions outside the hotel (by arriving after 6pm and leaving before 9am) you will need to park down in the town. Only a shortish route but the hotel is up on a hill, so not too good for those with limited mobility. So be prepared for an extra cost! Also, the road to the hotel (to drop off) is along a bumpy cobbled road which is quite narrow. That said (some booking sites suggest parking is permitted, but the hotel will send out an email prior to your arrival to inform you otherwise) the breakfast was excellent and our room (Harbour View ...4 poster bed) was very comfortable. So a great place to stay if you're fit and mobile and don't mind leaving your car in a town car park.

After staying at this hotel I can highly recommend the food and excellent service. The Rye scallop week menu was brilliant and so tasty. On a weekend afternoon when Rye’s many cafes were full, this little vintage tea room within the hotel was empty. Perhaps we should have taken that as a sign. Pleasant enough service but our flat whites were more like very weak lattes and the cheese scones were stodgy, stick-to-the-roof-of-your-mouth and rather tasteless. Shame when you can’t get the basics right, so I couldn’t really recommend this one.

Called in for a snack at the Vintage Tea Rooms attached to the Hope Anchor Hotel. As soon as you step through the door it's like stepping back in time to a Tea Rooms of the time of, shall we say, Agatha Christie's Miss Marple. However, there's nothing "vintage" about the service from the friendly staff or what is on offer on the menu. There's home made scones, cakes and sandwiches( Gluten Free scones, cakes and sandwiches are available). There's also a good choice of speciality teas and coffees. Wine and beer are also available as well as soft drinks. If you like Tea Rooms then you should like this one.

This hotel was not easy to find or get to - it lies within a small area of narrow, cobbled streets. I was put off by the fact that there is no car park, but they do have parking permits which allow visitors to park on the road (if there is space!). The bedroom was a bit shabby - loose handle on the bathroom door, blind cords missing from the blind in the bathroom, couldn't close the sash on the bathroom window) but the 'public' parts are ok, and the food good.

Stopped whilst browsing around Rye. Ordered an afternoon tea for me and hubster to share. Kid had Victoria sponge and mother had cream tea. Well the sandwiches were tasty and and cheesy pasties. But they let themselves down on a couple of points. Firstly the tea came out in two pots that were both lukewarm and had been filled cold from an urn. So we returned them and to be fair they refilled them with hot boiling water this time. Also the cream tea cake with whipped cream as opposed to clotted cream as advertised. So I like my cream teas and so felt cheated. But equally didn’t say anything as we had already complained about the tea. So if your not fussed about urn filled tea or clotted cream then this is for you. If you like a nice cup of tea then I’d stay clear.

We only found two choices for Sunday lunch in Rye but as it happens we were well satisfied! Bright and airy restaurant - perhaps a few too many pictures for sale adorning the walls and uninspiring decor - but the room was spotlessly clean and staff gave us a warm welcome. We liked the opportunity to select from three choices of fixed price menu - main course only, two or three courses. Since we were expecting to indulge again later that day we only opted for the main course but it was superb; delicious, generous and well-presented. The beef was thickly cut, still a bit red and perfectly cooked. I guess you could have asked for further minutes in the oven but not for me. The vegetables included cauliflower cheese, roasties, leeks, carrots, parsnips - fantastic selection and all well cooked and presented. For me a Sunday roast should be a generous plateful and it was. The whole thing was crowned by huge Yorkshire pudding and tasty gravy. Both the staff who served us were friendly, attentive and helpful.

This was our first stay at the Hope Anchor. Our room was actually an apartment opposite the main hotel, which had its own little patio area which would be lovely in the summer. The bathroom was I think the biggest I have ever used. The room can be used for 4 people although there were only 2 of us. The room was clean and comfortable with plenty of furniture. The bed was comfortable although it seemed extra small in such an enormous room. There was no heating in the room except for a couple of electric radiators which would definitely not have been adequate had it been a cold winters day. There was no heating in the bathroom although there were two radiators which were not working.

Sadly this Hotel did not live up to the expectations when we initially booked. Room substandard however I was told the price reflected this in comparison to other hotels in the vicinity by the manager? We were right above the bar which we were not aware of when we arrived and consequently had a dismal night's sleep because of the noise filtering up. Some other niggling concerns which were bought to the manager's attention however outcome disappointing and I will not book here again.

We found the Tea Room on walking round Rye, looking at menu they did an afternoon tea, so decided we would come back later and have this. We arrived back and found it was empty so sat down overlooking the road, ordered then waited the Tea came out followed by the sandwiches, cakes and scones, we ate the sandwiches then started on the scones they were nice and warm so we thought brilliant these are going to be good, how wrong were we, we took one bite and they were rock hard and stale, I went and found a member of staff and asked for more as these were inedible, so out she came with a couple more but unfortunately they were exactly the same, so were unable to eat these, this totally spoilt the experience as the scones were what we were looking forward to the most, it was such a shame as the place was lovely but just not sure what had happened.

My daughters brought me to beautiful Rye for the weekend as a belated Mother’s Day gift. Trying to book somewhere for Saturday dinner was difficult and I was surprised to get a table so easily at the Hope Anchor, especially in light of some of the great reviews about the food there. The decor was cold and impersonal, and the restaurant was virtually empty. However, the waiting staff were attentive and friendly and the food was well above average. It has the overall feel of a hotel dining room with very little atmosphere, which lets it down, sadly. They deserve to do well but need a more contemporary makeover if they are to compete with Rye’s many excellent eateries.

I was a bit unsure about eating here (we were staying at the hotel) because the restaurant gets quite a low trip advisor rating (27 of 79 restaurants in Rye) but we needn't have worried. The restaurant is small and most of the food is locally sourced, (we had locally caught scallops and salt marsh lamb) and is perfectly cooked and presented, although we've only eaten in a handful of other restaurants in Rye, I'm sure that there are not 26 that are better than this one. I think because the clientele is small, the rating is more to do with the number of reviews rather than the quality, I wouldn't hesitate to eat here again

I had dinner on Friday evening. To book here was a complete farce. I asked for 4 people on a Friday evening and after a lot of huffing and puffing was told we could get squeezed in. When we arrived at 8pm there were only two other tables in with seating for another 10 - 12 tables, which were never used and we left at 10pm after the restaurant was closed.I asked for a burger medium or medium rare if the chef could. I was told you can only have a well done burger.I started with a mozzarella salad, which was awful. There was no care in the presentation the salad leaves had not been cleaned properly, the mozzarella had clearly just come out of the packet.I ended up going with Chicken goujons which were not goujons but bits of chicken chunks about 1cm squared. The chicken was so over cooked I could not eat about half the portion, while the whole plate was swimming in oil. The side vegetables were clearly pre cooked and then microwaved as they looked decrepit. Had no bit to them and had zero taste.Dessert was a saving factor. The Eaton Mess was actually edible. Not amazing as the meringue was shop bought, but edible non the less.I know a lot of places will not cook burgers under medium rare but either the chef does not trust his supplier or he is not a chef if he is only willing to cook a burger to well done.Lastly the staff set up for breakfast the next morning while we were still having dinner, which I have to say i understand, but is not the most welcoming for those having dessert and an after dinner drink.I would strongly advise you to the George, which for £5 per head is so much better its amazing the Hope Anchor is still serving dinner.Seriously new chef required here

Whilst staying at the hotel we had both dinner and breakfast in the restaurant. There were two menus to choose from and we selected from the set menu. At dinner my husband had prawn cocktail and I chose the Greek salad for starters. They were both very tasty and nicely presented. For main course my husband had the bean tagine and I had the pork stroganoff. Again they were both very tasty. I was so impressed that I could have eaten it again, despite the fact that I was full. I did no expect meals from the set menu to be so delicious. At breakfast the following morning my husband and I both ordered the cooked English breakfast. Again the standard of the food was excellent, with beautiful sausage and bacon. My poached egg was cooked to perfection. We preceeded our cooked breakfast with prunes and fresh fruit salad. It was a delightful experience.

We ate here recently whilst on a short break in Rye and thoroughly enjoyed it. I had the plaice with prawns cooked in lemon butter with dauphinoise potatoes and my husband the steak which was the best one he had had for a long time apparently. Both were cooked to order and served piping hot on warm plates (cold plates are a bugbear of mine!). The puddings were amazing, the bread and butter pudding portion was very generous and we thought the whole meal including wine was good value.

Stayed here for 1 night and was booked as a gift on a wowcher. Wow! As it was a Thursday night stay it was only £49 for two with a cooked breakfast. The b&b is in a gorgeous location opposite the church. It's very quaint and our room was nice. Quite small with pine furniture but had the best nights sleep in the most comfortable bed and soft fluffy pillows. Very quiet and the staff were very nice. The breakfast was really nice and a good choice especially the cereals and breads etc. I would definitely recommend this hotel even at full price.

Rye has some lovely restaurants but this is not one of them. Our starters and mains were equally disappointing. The lamb was totally unrecognisable as lamb and the blueberry sauce to go with was not an inspired combination. The portobello mushroom starter stuffed with cheese was runny and the size of a regular mushroom. The food was overpriced for what was on the plate. The staff are competent and the dining room is fine if you like standard hotel dining rooms that lack any style but it is not a place for a romantic meal. There are so many more interesting places to eat in Rye and I certainly won't be returning here.

We checked in on the day of our anniversary having notified the hotel in advance via the booking agent, and direct on the Hope Anchor website, that it was a special occasion for us. The person checked in had no knowledge of either of the emails I'd sent so that was a big disappointment. In other words the day went unmarked by the hotel despite our best efforts. The outside of the hotel appeared shabby. The room and bathroom was spacious but very average in decor. It was, however, warm and the bed very comfortable. Breakfast was piping hot and well presented.Just an average stay which didn't really match up to the No 1 rating on Trip Advisor.Overall disappointing.

Stayed at the hotel with a dinner package which included a bottle of wine. Food was great, even the vegetarian food was imaginative. Quality service. Breakfast also good although the fruit salad had far too much apple in for my taste.

We stopped by for a drink as staying locally in Rye , the bar was busy as Easter weekend but it was our observations that left us feeling that this hotel ( despite welcoming non residents ) bases its popularity on its hotel and the awful wall of 'famous' guests , the bar area offers little seating and there was no effort to assist customers , as there was no serving of food in lounge areas many customers had no choice but to either leave or do without yet some of these guests were hotel guests! The barman was a little terse and to be honest we felt customer service was definitely lacking .

We were staying in Rye on a short break & decided to eat in the restaurant on 1 night. Food was excellent & presented well, staff very friendly & attentive & the atmosphere good. Sat in the lounge to have our coffee & it was very comfortable. Would love to stay at this hotel sometime, but would recommend eating in the restaurant. Please note, they do get busy, so pre-booking a table is recommended.

Not been here for a while, went to watch the football, then a band set up after (who sounded great), can't comment on food, as we didn't eat, but service was really nice and friendly, and atmosphere in pub was really good. Will absolutely return.

Food was over 45 mins late from stated delivery time, no updates given, so in total 2 hrs from placing order to delivery (on a Monday night!). Called to find out where our food was, to be rudely told it was nearly there (another 20mins). When food arrived, the grease on the bag with the onion bhaji was literally dripping off the bag. Husband had lamb madras, which consisted of 4 pieces of lamb, the rest was sauce! Was totally disappointed, will never return and never recommend! Worst 40 odd quid I've ever spent!

I've read a few not quite so favourable reviews recently - you can only report as you find, I understand that- so I thought I'd add this one from this evening. Four of us enjoyed a relaxing meal, at reasonable cost (ok, the desserts might be a smidge expensive, but they were nice); main courses of steak and kidney pud (which my friend thought was the best she had probably ever eaten out), giant haddock and chips, which really was pretty sizeable and lovely, Moroccan stew -very tasty with good sides, and belly pork (with which the mustard mash was a highlight) were well cooked and enjoyed by all. A new barrel of Harveys Best had just been tapped, and wine by the glass was good value and quality. Service was exemplary (yes, the pub wasn't that busy, but that doesn't always mean good service). We thoroughly enjoyed our evening - both members of front-of-house staff who looked after us (one apparently being very new) were delightful, and added to our enjoyment.

To be honest I had no real idea of what The Bell would be like when I booked it. The location was convenient for a function we were attending elsewhere. What a revelation, this place is amazing. You have to consider that the "project " is ongoing, but this doesn't impact on anything. The standards are great. Service, welcome and the whole experience was amazing. While entering the bedroom, the standard of which it had been decorated and furnished to was just way above what you could have expected. Only down side was that we were only staying the one night.
