Beautiful food, unique, well executed and definitely worth a visit. Chef is very friendly and appears at every table for a chat. On the downside, there is zero ambience. It’s cold and stark. Definitely an issue with the harsh lighting and just no nice touches to the interior. A shame as the food would be made even better by a welcoming environment.

The food here is amazing and I think worth the money charged. But to echo other reviews the service whilst friendly is slow and not helped by only having one staff member on the night we were there to deal with all the customers. The room itself did lack ambience and the music choices don't seem to match the sophistication of the food on offer. Also not sure of the merits of a handwritten bill to be honest. But does that matter? probably not that much given the tasty dishes offered.

Firstly the good stuff: the food was outstanding with several dishes having a genuine wow factor. Both the chef and the waitress were friendly and took the time to explain the dishes and the wine pairings. The wine was great too. The less good stuff: we don’t know if they were having an off night but having been asked to arrive 18.45 with everyone else, we waited ~45 mins for the first course to arrive. As we were having the wine pairing we thought we could skip having a drink while we wait as we didn’t think it would be that long. I think if we had been told to expect that long to wait we might have ordered a drink. We were surprised that there was only one front of house staff. She was very friendly and did a decent job in the circumstances but it really felt like she was doing a job for two people. She was so busy having to do the bare minimum of bringing everyone’s dishes and wine pairings that she would not have time to deal with any other requests the guests might have. This was especially an issue at the end of the evening when we waited again ~45 mins for the bill since she had to do all 9-10 tables one by one. Not helped by the fact that the bills were hand written. We also echo some of the other reviews on here that the restaurant lacked atmosphere. I can see what they are trying to do but it all felt a little too bright in there. In conclusion: amazing food, but, for the money we would expect better service. Not that the only waitress was bad but she had far too much to do.

Very bad experience. Service of food and drinks was incredibly slow. Sometimes 30 minutes between courses!! No in between little canapés to keep us going. No topping up of the wine that’s supposed to go with the dish, but was finished due to long waiting time for the food to arrive. We are from high end hospitality ourselves and consider this experience a massive disappointment.

We had lunch here during our stay in Brighton and the food was excellent. The chef gives a great deal of though to sauces and presentation and service was well paced and the waitress very helpful and knowledgeable especially about the wine. Decor is minimal but the fish paintings on the walls are clever. A little more fabric to deaden the noise would be a plus; there were a group of guests the other end of the restaurant who were noisy and they disturbed us even though we were as far away from them as possible. In that context the background music with a heavy bass beat did not help. We came for the food and went away content; we will return.

We first ate here a few years ago and immediatley knew it was one of the best restaurants we have been to anywhere in the uk. We visited again last night to celebrate our wedding anniversary and enjoyed everything about it. Fish is a real favourite of ours and here we enjoyed a fantastic series of dishes. The food is rich but light with great flavours that build one after another. The room is light and spacious, with lots of space around you, so you can enjoy your conversation and not hear others. The food arrives at a steady pace through the evening. The service is friendly and very professional. Chef, Duncan Ray brings some of them himself and finds time to chat as well. Not our first visit to The Little Fish Market, and it certainly won't be our last. The food has remained consistently good over the years, with faultless fish cookery, delicately balanced flavours, imaginative ingredient combinations and surprisingly delightful amuse bouches! This evening, the highlights for us were the pan fried cod, cured monkfish, and the diminutive but flavour-packed treacle bread. The only slight disappointment was the peanut butter, chocolate and banana dessert, which was a bit too sweet for my liking and not to my partner's taste, but that is more of a personal preference rather than a failing on the chef's part. The service, also, could have been better, with a bit of indifference and brusqueness at first, but things got better as the evening went on. Don't expect a speedy meal here, and the tasting menu will take a good three hours from start to finish, so as long as you're prepared for that, and want to enjoy delicious seafood and fish, without too many bells and whistles in the form of ambience, this is the place for you.

The food was exquisite, the service lacklustre given there were only 2 tables, ambience was non existent and I felt like I was at school with a 6.45pm start. It had the feel and lighting of a cafe where I might spend £15 not what turned out to be £150 a head. The parade of people (presumably kitchen staff) walking past our table shortly after we sat down further detracted from the experience. When I’m spending that much money I expect more of my surroundings and more attentive service. If you remove the wine from the table you shouldn’t wait to be asked to fill up glasses.

Excellent food spread nicely throughtout the evening, if a tad pricey at £140pp with wine pairing, but this is "fine dining". Nice that the chef (owner?) came and said hello before and after our meal and the two service staff were warm and attentive. On arrival we felt the restaurant was cold so a few of us had to keep our coats on until it warmed up! The lighting was also very bright with bare wood tables, no candles so our initial feeling was that it was more of a cafe feel than a restaurant. Service was very friendly but we didn't feel it matched the £95/head price tag (asking for water, passing plates/cutlery around the table and having to ask for water). We had a wine flight which we would expect the bottle to be brought to the table and corked, introducing the wine rather than a tray of ready-made glasses. Most food dishes were good (one very good). Nice canapés but no bread which I feel should be served with every meal. Nice food and friendly service but at £95 a head we were expecting more.

Had high expectations but for “fine dining’ at 95 pounds pp, this experience fell short of other similarly priced restaurants. Better up front explanation of the dish ingredients and cooking philosophy would have helped. The egg like dish (note it was not egg) was odd given the dish description provided and it’s consistency was too watery. The mackerel dish was underwhelming. Deserts were excellent and restaurant ambience was very nice.

We have been to TLFM on a number of special occasions and were really looking forward to our return visit with a group of friends. The food did not disappoint - it is - and always has been delicious, but the experience was somewhat spoilt by the noise levels. Although the restaurant is small, just one or two people talking loudly will lead to unacceptable noise levels which made it difficult to hear the waiter let alone the other people in our party of only 6. I’m sorry to say that this substantially retracted from the enjoyment of what is an expensive meal out. Be prepared for a wine list where sadly the quality does not live up to the high price.

The Tasting menu is the only option, fine: at £85 however, I’d have expected a little more…..we thought the first two “nibbles” were an extra, and then realised no, they were the first course. That said, the fish cooking was delicious. Because of our confusion over had we started or not, we were late ordering the wine flight. Looking at the wines, that too comes out a bit mean at £55pp. The service was a bit up and down - sometimes a long wait, and other times not enough of a pause, maybe because they serve each table in the same order every dish round. The room itself is a bit bright. Other reviewers too commented on how bare it all feels. I always wonder why the chef serves - isn’t he needed in the kitchen? It was a treat for a special occasion, but all in all I have to say I wouldn’t shell out that sort of money to visit again.

The slip sole was so tender that it fell away from the bone so cleanly, and it was so incredibly buttery and rich and just divine! We had the cheese course as well which was gorgeous. The wine flight is well worth doing too - who could resist a glass of champagne at the beginning of a special meal!? This restaurant is an expensive hobby, the best part of £300 for two with wine and service. I do sometimes wonder if we are paying to be there to please the chef or the chef is there to please us judging from the rules we should observe on the website. Luckily gone are the days of only taking cash, which sometimes necessitated a visit to the cash point at the end of the evening. However I digress, cards are obviously accepted now. The room is stark and soulless, more canteen than high end restaurant. On leaving, the feeling is more endurance rather than warmth, joy and money well spent. There is one menu, no choice, start time 7.00 p.m., arrive 6.45 p.m. be there or be square! Every one served the same course at the same time. To be honest I am not a massive fan of just warm food, which happens if your table is not first out of the kitchen. For me the big sin, no bread …….. Surely a restaurant like this should be able to present some sort of warm interesting bread. To be honest even just normal French bread would have been nice. Two amuse bouche were good and nicely presented as were the hake, and gilt edged bream dishes. The monkfish, a meaty fish, was rather tough with a green ravioli and green sauce which wasn’t for me. Perhaps a cerviche or grilled langustine as one of the courses would be a suggestion and also a change of texture. There were three puddings all very nice but perhaps a cheese course and two puddings may be preferable. To b honest, not a very relaxing experience!

TLFM is not an experience you want to 'fit in' to your schedule if just visiting Brighton. This is a Destination dinner - block out your evening (and don't have lunch that day) as the entire experience is a delight. NOT pretentious, NO gimmicky decor, just some of the best seafood you'll sample anywhere, Duncan and staff are welcoming and friendly, and IMO the amuse bouche's are actually highlight's rather than being something slipped between courses. Fine Dining for someone that appreciates a Chef's work, rather than the theatre that so often is used to justify an expensive meal. And if they opened for breakfast the Egg and Soldiers would have them queuing up the road. Just saying :)

This review is more about ambiance and noise levels than food. When you are looking forward to an evening catching up with friends you do hope for a little bit of comfort around the edges. The Little Fish Market is as minimal as could possibly be. On a dank Jan evening with a group of friends the restaurant feels sparse and cold. But the biggest problem is the noise level. Not a single piece of fabric or furnishing to help with acoustics meaning that not only could we not hear or understand the waiting staff, we could not talk as a group but only, with difficulty, to the person next to you. It was impossible to have a relaxing conversation and we left at the end of the evening having spent a serious amount of money but feeling like we had an assault on the senses of the most exhausting kind!

When I lived just around the corner from this venue, I never once saw: a menu in the window, dining customers eating a meal, any customers at all, actually open for business. Things did change so someone was doing something on occasion. Apparently, there's no menus because you're not offered a choice. Of anything it seems. Customers all receive the same multi course tasting menu. There is only one dining time slot, 6.30pm. All customers must arrive on time, as all tables are served each freshly prepared course at the same time. I understand the concept, because you're being offered (subjected to) an experience likely to take a couple of hours whether you like it or not. I appreciate the amount of work, knowledge, passion, experience and skill that goes on in higher end kitchens, but any competent kitchen can serve twenty identical plates of food at the same time, it's less of an a la carte menu skillset needed and more a workflow efficient banqueting style of pre-prep, finish, plate, dress, and serve. Enough floor staff for swift service roll outs across the room like a wave - and if the first punter served finishes before the last plate is placed, you've misunderstood the concept of bulk prep, speedy plating and competent hands front and back. Dining as a customer, banqueting is my least favourite style of sevice. I resent being a prisoner to a kitchen's staggered timetable. That course of three bites of smoked salmon three ways with a foam, an emulsion and a spritz fizz was nice and fine but I'm not waiting 25 minutes between esch plate in a six course meal. Not for a hundred pounds a head I'm not.

Our first outing to TLFM and hopefully not the last. We adore fish and have never sampled a fish tasting menu before and to be honest we’re not usually fans of taster menus. In the past they’ve been minuscule, tarted up so much that you can’t actually identify what’s on your plate and on the whole pretty unsatisfactory. This experience was totally different though. Each plate was delicious without fault - perfectly cooked and beautifully presented. It was exciting to see what would be served course after course….and we were wowed throughout. I’d recommend the wine flight as the wines were very good and paired perfectly with what we were eating. The service was excellent and our servers were informative and charming….plus it was a nice touch seeing chef come to out table at meal end. It’s not cheap but for a special night out we LOVED it and would highly recommend for anyone who prizes excellent food.

I'm always a little sceptical about obligatory tasting menus, but that scepticism was completely unfounded in this case as we got course after course of stunning fish and seafood, followed up by delicious puddings. The setting is pleasantly informal, with a nice atmosphere and friendly...

The very best place for fish and service. This is saying something as Brighton has so many wonderful restaurants and I'm also comparing TLFM to Michelin star restaurants I've been too. The chef here is also so humble although superbly talented.
