Mekan Charcoal Grill Meze in Brighton and Hove

Great food and great service- have dined here a number of times and always greatly enjoyed my evening. The meat is tender and charcoal grilled and the vegetable dishes interesting and varied.

Went last night, hugely disappointing experience. We were the 4th table seated, so the place was almost empty. 4 staff on duty - 2 front of house, 2 kitchen. Nonetheless, it took about 15 minutes from seating before anyone brought a menu over. (Another guest who arrived after us was given a menu straight away). Then about another 10 minutes for someone to actually take a drinks order. (Come on, guys - the mark up on drinks is HUGE - you NEED to sell this stuff!). But only 1 glass was provided for the bottle of wine... (Guess that made my partner happy, at least). Then about 10 minutes after we'd placed a food order another waiter came to check our order was actually correct. Food was adequate, but nothing to write home about. Portion sizes not great. Dirty plates not cleared away after we finished mains. Nobody offered dessert or coffee, so we just asked for the bill. They didn't add a tip to the bill - which was appropriate, I guess, and I did not ask to add one (I'm usually a generous tipper, but this was very poor). 1 starter, 2 mains and 1 bottle of wine - about £100. I formed the distinct impression that the waiting staff had never done this job before, nor ever looked at the menu as every item seemed to bewilder them. There must be about 100 restaurants on Church Road - unless Mekan raises it's game it will fail. Real shame.

If you are looking for a restaurant that goes over and beyond to make you feel comfortable and valued, this is the one. We had booked for 1pm for our anniversary but had arrived early at 12:30, this was not a problem and we were promptly taken to our seat by our waiter Jeremy. We took a instant warm to him, polite, genuine smile and had attention to detail when it comes to our needs. The decor is outstanding with a ship rustic theme. We got the prawns starter to share which came out sizzling hot and was dripping with flavour, although it is spicy as stated on the menu (hot). We then proceeded to get a mix grill and a dish which consisted of lamb cubes and chicken cubes. Both were succulent, tender and fresh. The fact that they are cooked on a charcoal grill makes them that much more delectable. Very reasonablely priced and would be great for a couples night, family outing or even a solo lunch. Highly recommend.

I recently dined at Mekan restaurant and was thoroughly impressed. The ambiance is cozy and inviting, perfect for a casual meal or a special occasion. My daughter and I ate here for the first time. The food was incredible. It was so tasty and was presented well. The service was great and the staff were fun. We will be returning!

We had high hopes for this place but we left feling very let down. Arrived at 19.30 for dinner and we were promptly seated which is fine. We then waited nearly 25 minutes to be offered a drink, myself and my friend ordered draught beer which arrived 15 minutes later in two bottles but no glasses so i asked for the glasses but was only given one, we then ordered our starter and mains which was about another 20 minutes. After finishing our mains nobody came near us at all to offer more drinks or even a coffee. This such a shame as the food was really nice and a fantastic old building but all let down by terrible service.

We had a wonderful evening at Mekan Restaurant Hove. My third visit to this fantastic restaurant. The warm and inviting atmosphere perfectly complemented the authentic Turkish dishes. The mezes were exceptional, with kısır, aubergine, and charcoal grilled meat combined with Middle Eastern flavoured salad 😍 transporting us straight to Turkey. The raki was a perfect pairing, enhancing the flavors and adding to the authenticity of the experience. Service was quick and attentive. In short, Mekan Restaurant is the ideal spot for experiencing authentic Turkish cuisine. Highly recommended! ---

I organised my group dinner here with 14 other women on the table. We had the most delicious hot and cold starters only meal as a whole group with Turkish Raki. It was exquisite! Friendly family run business, food is worth every penny! I highly recommend it!

It's a restaurant I visit frequently because I live nearby. For those who miss Turkish food, it's a place not to be missed. The design, quality, and food of the place are above the average Turkish restaurants. It has never been disappointing.

It was one of the most hospitable restaurants with very hospitable staff and the food was very delicious and excellent

I had high expectations for this place but was sadly disappointed. Maybe it’s because I’m a vegetarian going to a grill house. I ordered the Mekan Veggie Kebap- but there was so much yogurt and a sickly amount of oil- it gave me an upset stomach straight after even though i had drained as much as i could. The meat dishes looked good though so I guess I should choose wisely next time lol. Service was very polite and friendly but no check back and he took a while to bring our bill even though it was not busy.

Why is this place not busier?! We had an excellent meal with a lovely bottle of Turkish wine. The service was friendly and attentive, and the place itself is gorgeous, with patio heaters inside to warm it up, as it’s a big space. £75.00 for two starters, two mains, a bottle of wine and coffee seems reasonable to me. The only downside for me was intrusive noise from other people (including children) watching things out loud in their mobile phones but I guess that’s how things are nowadays. But overall, a very good experience

It was wonderful experience and tasty as well. This restaurant is the best in the town I can say that. Inside is huge and wide, musics well can be a bit high volume. Foods were delicious and proper cooked. Especially, grilled lamp chops and lamp shish was great taste and well cooked which we were expecting. All staffs were friendly and good behaviour. Starters were another level quality as well. Strongly suggested place. We love it.

You get chartged £4 for the bread. My friend had a yougurt with meat dish which was mainly yougurt We spent £60 between three of us and were awfully underwhelmed and hungry. No drinks I tried to contact the management on website . Their link did not work Sent an email separately . Never got a reply. All other persian grills around here far better ,,,Shayan Gandom , Shiraz, the only good thing about this one I am reviewing is the room. We will never be back.

Best Turkish restaurant in Brighton and Hove

Mekan is the best Turkish restaurant in Brighton and Hove. I recently went there with friends and we had a fantastic meal. We ordered a selection of mezze, including hummus, baba ghanoush, and falafel, all of which were delicious. For our main courses, we had lamb shish, chicken shish, adana kebab, and lamb chops. All of the meat was cooked to perfection and was incredibly flavorful. The service was also excellent, and the staff were very friendly and attentive. I highly recommend Mekan to anyone looking for a delicious Turkish meal in Brighton and Hove.

Really lovely evening. Food was plentiful and delicious. Catered for gf and vegetarian and plenty of meat for the carnivores.

This is the best restaurant in Brighton. The service is excellent: they always go the extra mile to make sure everything is okay and you're happy. It's a family owned business and you can tell: you leave knowing that they truly care and appreciate you, especially after COVID where so many small businesses have been struggling. The food is truly delicious: my favourite is the imam bayildi and the baklava dessert. Honestly, could not recommend enough! Will be coming back

Website says opening hours start at 12.00. We parked up and arrived shortly after then on a Friday as we wanted an early lunch. The door was locked and no one inside. I phoned their number and someone appeared so I waved through the window. They opened the door and said come back in an hour. Why not update the website or stick to the time it says.

My girlfriend had booked here for us to go for my birthday. Apparently it wasn't that easy to book, with the website completely not functioning and people on the phone being quite vague, but she was assured she had a reservation. We turn up on Wednesday the 13th Sept to find it completely shut with no phone call, text or email to let us know. I really wanted to like this place as it looks great, but we won't be trying again. Looking through other reviews, I can see we're not the only ones this has happened to either.

It was my son's 18th birthday yesterday. He chose to go there. I booked online & left my contact details. After an £18 ride we got there to find it closed. We stood outside for about 20 minutes looking online for somewhere else to go. Now, because of disability, walking is hard & painful. I'm annoyed because i wasn't contacted about the cancellation (apparently technical & chef issues.) A courtesy call would've been nice & appreciated. I was however called today with just a "sorry" & excuses. Not even a "come back & we'll give your son a pint on the house for his Birthday" It's unfortunate but i wont risk making another reservation & spending the money to get there for it to be cancelled. I wish you all the best though.

It's the best lamb shish I've had in England and the best soup I've ever had. I would definitely recommend. As a business decoration, they are really high quality and very good employees, very good people.

It's not a big restaurant but really nice service and friendly people. Food was but pricy (~£25 pp with drinks) but overall really good.

MEKAN CHARCOAL GRILL was a restaurant where we chose for lunch yesterday. We were very pleased with both what we ate and also the friendly staff.

Plenty of choice with gluten-free options clearly marked in some parts of the menu but not others. It’s one of those places where if it looks gluten-free it probably is, but check to be sure. Halloumi cheese and falafels were good starters, which we followed up with a selection of grilled meats. Friendly service, although perhaps slightly understaffed as it wasn’t as attentive as it might have been.

My friend's dish had no aubergine and was Yogurth loaded The chilli sauce was some industrial supermarket brand instead of a home-made one. We have tried Gandom, Shayan, Shiraz, and others. We were all seriously disappointed.

Of all the Persian restaurants around here , the best room , but the worst food and service and the most expensive. . Not even the email address on their page works I will favour Gandom Shiraz or Shayan any day ...or the incredibly tasty Constantinople , (more Turkish / Greek). I will not be back .

Not our first time here so we knew how good it was and we werent dissapointed. Friendly prompt but unhurried service, which made such a change after recent experiences at other resturants trying to hurry us through. The food was delicous, lots of healthy, tasty sides to accompany the grilled meat. Gorgeous space too, open and airy but still feeling intimate. There is also a close, friendly feel to the staff team, it makes a big difference.

Polite staff, and nice food, but waited an hour for it. Also the drink bottle came out, then 10 minutes later the glasses for it came, after we started drinking. Similarly with the food, the meat for mixed platter came and then 10 minutes later the side salad came...

Such a nice restaurant, great atmosphere and unique food, even for vegetarians. Definitely will come again

We went in here after a disaterous viait to a restaurant across the road. We just wanted a drink and dessert. Wish we had eaten here in the first place! The service was impeccable, the desserts tasty and of good size and the pricing was extremely reasonable. Wine was reasonably priced and the place was clean and welcoming. We will definitely be back for a full meal very soon.

Terrible service. The waitress was rude and dismissive. The food was dry and overcooked. The chicken was like rubber. A great selection of food if you like overcooked lamb. We ordered a bottle of white wine from the menu that cost £21. We were horrified when they gave us a £6 bottle of "I love" wine which wasn't what we asked for. When we questioned it the waiter explained that the their usual supplier didn't deliver that week. He did not apologise or offer an alternative. He just laughed and walked away. I won't be going back and I would not recommend this to anyone. There are lots of places where you can get a better kebab and better service.

Nice restaurant. It was very quiet when we arrived. The food was tasty. Some service basics like offering water, or providing a knife for the main course, or offering sugar and a spoon to go with a coffee, would have been appreciated (without having to specifically request them when they weren’t provided). I tried to leave a tip on my card, but unfortunately couldn’t, as only cash tips are accepted.

This is the BEST FOOD in all of Hove!!

I liked the high ceilings and open charcoal grill. The service was fast and friendly. I liked the way they brought bread, a small hummus and salad with our meals at no extra cost. The food was all delicious that I tried, an aubergine dip, prawns and chicken kebab and lamb kofta

Beautiful gorgeous place, perfect lightening to make it welcoming and great for a date night. Food is full of flavours, well presented with some courtesy pita bread or salad on the side. Very friendly staff. Overall a great experience that I totally recommend. Definitely going back again to continue exploring the menu!

We were told they had run out of rice, offered chips or bulgar salad instead. Everything on the menu is with rice! Wouldn't let me change my order to one that was not with rice!

went for a group of 6 booking on saturday night. the waiters were great, very friendly , polite and helpful. The food was REALLY GOOD, tasty, portions were good, really liked the mix starter platter . the only downside is the food service was slow - the food is cooked fresh you can see the grill in front of you, but bread and cold starters could come out sooner. would go again.

We made a booking for a Sunday roast. The title says it all really.... the food was lovely but we waited over an hour for it with no apology or explanation-with a booking this was unreasonable in my opinion. In addition, when we ordered, the waitress had a ‘computer says no’ attitude and was really rather rude. Shame as we probably won’t go again because of this.

Took the family here for early dinner as we were staying locally and on recommendation. The burgers are excellent. The veggie options very good. The fish (both fresh plaice and fish and chips) were very good. The only problem was that only three of our four dishes were delivered at the same time due to a kitchen misunderstanding. Fixed by the application of a free pint!
