Wish we had read other reviews first! Very disappointed, outside of hotel and views lovely inside tired and dated. Greeted by a sign on the main entrance explaining to go around the back of the building and ringing to be eventually answered by a polite but rather eerie character. There was no bar on offer over the whole weekend and no dinner available as he wasn't sure if his mother had been shopping!! Unfortunately the bathroom wasn't clean and the breakfast average. On the morning of leaving we received an email to say payment had been taken and we saw no one as we left, a very odd way to run a hotel business!

This was billed as a 4* hotel and cost £140 per night. Honestly 1 or at best 2* and £60 per night would have been fairer. My friends and i would never set foot in the place again; the entrance and carpet upstairs was filthy, over flowing ash tray on the bench outside the front door. The room itself was 1960’s, the toilet was filthy and the cistern was broken. The shower in our friends room was broken but at least they had a bath as back up. The breakfast was ok but only filter coffee on offer, packaged marmalade/jams. We came back from the pub (Finnygook Inn) after an excellent dinner looking for a night cap at 9pm and the bar was closed. A terrible experience.

Think bates Motel.! This is quite the oddest place I have ever stayed in. When I arrived there was no one about, Bar was in darkness. Outdoor furniture untidily scattered around and covered in bird lime. Room was cold and no hot water from the sink tap. Electric shower. Wi Fi practically non existent. None in the room. Evening meals were poor and straight form the freezer. Breakfast was adequate.

My wife and I holidayed with our 3 children and their partners, our 4 grandchildren and 3 dogs. From the moment we arrived the owner Fiona and her wonderful sons made us extremely welcome tending to anything we needed. The rooms were very clean and spacious. The hotel is in a cracking location, minutes away from the coast and a challenging golf course. We discovered the hotel last year whilst walking the south west coastal path and thought it would make an ideal family holiday base. We were not wrong. The grounds are gorgeous with a lovely play area which the youngsters loved. Breakfast was amazing and the grandchildren loved the fact they could get what they wanted. The dogs even got a sausage every morning. Fiona and her sons are great hosts. Fiona even waved us off on our final day. We will be back in the near future.

We had a wonderful nights stay here whilst walking the coastal path. We arrived wet and bedraggled after being caught in the rain and were were so well looked after by Fiona and her family. The room was warm and comfortable and the house has a beautiful situation. It was the warmth of the welcome we received that made our stay special. This was real hospitailty of a quality you rarely find these days. . Highly recommended.

Stayed for 4 nights recently. Fiona & her team offered a very warm & friendly reception in a beautiful part of Cornwall we’d never visited before. Our dog friendly accommodation was amazing, private entrance, 4 poster for the adults & an adjoining upstairs, beautifully oak beamed attic room for our 8 yr old daughter, large with 3 single beds - great for a family of 5 plus the Dorma windows made for easy star gazing. Breakfast was lovely, fresh & local full English with good continental selection. Daughter loved the waffles & Fiona reserved a waffle just for her every morning. Our dachshund also spoilt with a sausage every morning for breakfast! The hotel grounds were also beautiful. There’s a lovely garden & large pond, with nesting mallards there at the moment. Within the grounds, there’s a great play area for kids, surrounded by nature & very secure. The Liscawn is a great central base, stunning surroundings & within 25 mins of attractions like Mount Edgecumbe, Looe, Polperro & Cawsand. The Barbican can be reached by foot ferry from Mount Edgecumbe. There’s a small beach close by, easy access. Tregantle’s large sandy Beach is a mile away, beautiful & uncrowded - down the cliff but you could get a pushchair down. A huge plus point was how dog friendly the area is, numerous restaurants & shops all welcoming pooches, our dachshund was spoilt more than the humans! We loved our stay so much we’ve booked to go back. Thank you Fiona, from the grown up’s, Milly & Molly Woofington

Alles bestens gelaufen.

My wife and myself visited this establishment on the 11th August for lunch. The restaurant is situated off the road from Torpoint to Crafthole. The setting is quiet and peaceful and if the weather is good an ideal place to sit outside. The lunchtime menu is rather limited but I easily found something that looked good. One aspect that I did not go much on was that the presentation was rather "cheffie" ie slates with swirls of mayo on them instead of proper plates, but saying that the food was good and it was hot. The crab fritters are spot on. This place is not cheap but you pay for what you get, better than some places in the area. All in all I liked it and will return. P.S. it is also dog friendly

This will be an accurate review of the restaurant and service. The brewery used seems to be Sharps so the choice of lager was limited and three of the party opted for sharps pilsner which was expensive and the strangest ever tasted ( it had a taste similar to fairy liquid ( not that we regularly drink fairy liquid but I think you have the idea. Now on to the dinner. The starters were faultless but the duck main course was over cooked with soggy skin which should of course have been crispy. nothing that it was served with really complimented the dish so poor marks for that. The wine cost £19.95 which was expensive for a cheap Australian shiraz. Now to the dessert. The crème brulee was good but the so called orange chocolate browny clearly was missing the orange flavour as it appeared to be a bought in bog standard desert ( dry and dense ) When this was bought to the attention of the waitress she actually argued that the chef would not have forgotten to add orange to the mixture even though the four of us had tasted it. Though I was not looking for a discount after complaining about the mains and dessert it would have been a nice gesture to have removed the cost of the wine from the bill which would have cost the restaurant a miniscule amount and we would have considered a return visit but that is very unlikely now.

I've deliberated over writing this for a couple of days as I wanted to be as honest as possible. Table for 6 was booked earlier that Sunday morning for 6pm. When we arrive we were greeted and shown to the table. The table wasn't dressed unlike all the others. No cutlery, napkins or menus. It took a while for the menus to arrive to the point where we almost asked for them. Sounds really minor but you'd expect a basic level service. We then had to prompt the staff that we would like to order drinks. Two of us ordered starters and we had to ask for napkins. No service check to see if all was ok while we ate. We then waited just over an hour for the mains. Again no hint from anyone that it would take a while and again we had to call the waitress over to ask for more drinks. With only around 10 other customers you'd expect some kind of check? (They've been looking for staff since June....how long does it take?). It honestly felt we were in some parallel universe as we could see other guests were being looked after in the other part of the restaurant. One of our group complained about how long it took to get the mains and the chap made some comments and got quite defensive "as he'd been up since 6am". Well, it's a cruel world but not the customers problem. There was a service check while we were eating the main course so thumbs up there. The food - pretty good actually and cooked fresh to order and possibly killed to order given the time it took!. It was well-presented and tasty. Some guests had the burgers which looked awesome and pretty substantial. I had the chilli and can I suggest maybe a little more than 4 table spoons worth if you're going to charge £10+ Good to see Gluten free alternatives/optionsIt's a lovely setting and decorated really well. Would I go again. Sadly... probably not as I'm one for giving a place a second chance but when the guy got stroppy about being up all day then unfortunately that blew it. I would suggest to anyone to look at all the comments though and give the place a try as we all have bad days lol. I might go back in a year or so.

Has been modernised significantly since we last visited. I wouldn't visit again. Only very minimal staff who were more interested in chatting at the bar than serving customers. We waited ages for food and drinks and to get the bill so it all felt very drawn out and we won't visit again. It's a shame as it used to be our place to go twice every holiday with large groups of us. This time there were 8 of us and we were not impressed. Food was good but quite limited selection and the slowness made it missable! Lovely location but the new owners need to rethink their organisation and attention to detail to retain loyal customers

After having a really good experience on our initial visit and leaving a very good review to say so, we returned today for Sunday lunch with family. What a different experience! On arrival it was obvious that it was busy and that the staff were pushed. We waited at the bar and were then pointed in the direction of our table. We then waited a long time to be asked if we would like a drink and eventually my Daughter went up and stood at the bar to order, as nobody came to our table. When we got our drinks the two pints of lager shandy were warm so my husband asked if his could be changed, which it was, however it wasn't any colder. The menu choice was roast or al a carte. We were told there was no roast beef but that there was roast pork, which my husband then ordered. On ordering we were questioned as to whom had told us there was roast pork as there wasn't any. My husband went to the bar to look at the menu again, the owner came out at this point and stated that 'there was no roast pork, they never have roast pork'! Cordial customer service would not have gone amis at this point. When our food came, the two stilton and peppered mushroom suet crust puddings were served with veg and frozen chips on the side. There was no gravy or sauce of any kind so the dish was extremely dry. I hoped that when I cut into the pudding there would be enough gravy within it to rectify this, however sadly not. We asked for extra gravy, which we were given. Sadly it didn't end here, the veg was virtually raw, not al dente, raw! The waitress came over and asked if our meals were OK, I deliberately didn't answer as I did not want to cause any more fuss or add to the discomfort that we were already feeling. When we got our bill the same waitress asked if we had enjoyed our meals and asked us to be honest, so I told her the issues with mine. She then said that she had asked us if everything was OK whilst we were eating and I pointed out that I had in fact not answered her. My husband said that his drink was warm and she said that this had been rectified for him, which he explained actually had not, due to the new drink still being warm. She then said that nobody else had complained about anything but that she would call the boss, I said not to bother, we would just pay our bill and leave. We paid and she did leave us whilst the card was going through the machine and then the boss appeared. He stood behind the bar when we left but did not say anything and I'm afraid his persona was apathetic and uninspiring, sadly rather like our experience at the Liscawn today.

We booked this restaurant on bank holiday Monday for a party of 9. Having been told they were busy we had to have an early 530 slot arrived to find only two other people sitting in the restaurant and only another 9 people turned up after us for food!! The meal I had was steak at £16.95 which came on a hot slab so you could continue to cook yourself. The chips were cheap frozen chips not hand cut like you would expect in a place like this and the steak was certainly not the best. However the starters and puddings that came were all good and were enjoyed by everyone who ordered them. Nice setting but take the gimmick away from the steak on a slab and do hand cut chips then it would be perfect

As a genuine local of more than 30 years I felt I had to respond to the review recently written by hector from St John who tried to insinuate that 'the locals, do not visit the Liscawn. I was incensed when I read the comments. When the previous owners had the hotel it was empty most nights of the year with a very limited menu which never changed. Since the current owners have taken over they have strived tirelessly to modernise the whole hotel from individualising each room to creating the now beautiful warm and welcoming bar and lounge area. We are a mature couple who have both travelled extensively and we have eaten in many top restaurants and we consider the food at the Liscawn to be equal to and in some cases better than the majority of these. We have taken numerous friends and family to eat here and they have all been of the same mind - fantastic food beautifully presented, lovely relaxing atmosphere. We visit the hotel on average three times a week and always see lots of 'real locals' enjoying themselves. I can only assume from the tone of Hector's review that he/she has some self interest by writing such a vitriolic account of their visit. As for the children's play area it is true that food is not served in this area but there are plenty of other places to sit in the sun outside the main building where you can enjoy your meal. I have to say it takes some believing to think that anyone would want to remain in an area covered in dog faeces to have their lunch drawing into question once again the truth behind the comments. Please go to the Liscawn and judge for yourself I am confident you will not be disappointed. Please don't accept that this person speaks for many of us who are genuine locals and eat and drink at the Liscawn on a regular basis!

A group of 5 of us enjoyed a lovely meal last evening. We made various meal choices between us and we were well impressed with all of the food - particularly the garlic mushrooms. The owner and waitress were very pleasant and friendly. The only slight downside with the visit was the "smeechy" atmosphere caused by the sizzling meals ordered by other diners. The meals looked superb - and I'm sure they would have tasted great as well - but it's a shame that the low ceilings and apparent lack of extractor fans meant the air was somewhat unpleasant to breathe in. Nevertheless we will definitely go back.

A large group of us booked a table for lunch. We were so cold the kind barman provided us with blankets but we had to sit in our coats as well, although the heating had apparently been on since 7am. It was not a cold day.My Thai prawns were simply battered prawns with a dipping sauce that seemed to have come out of a bottle and were served on tired lettuce that was brown at the edges. My vegetable curry wasn't remotely spicey but the plain rice had been sprinkled with chilli flakes which was a bit odd. Others in the group had very ordinary meals but the ham, egg and chips seemed OK.The barman gave us excellent, kind service and the view down the valley was lovely, but I will not be going back!

The food and service was good. We went on a quiet day and the staff were friendly. The atmosphere and appearance is a little unexpected inside. It seems to look like a corporate venue whereas from the outside it looks like a charming country pub. A bit disappointing considering the location as it could have been in any big city. The food looks home made and the specials were great.

We went to the Liscawn Hotel for our works Xmas Dinner last night. It was absolutely delicious, probably one of the lovliest Christmas Dinners I have had in a long time. The gravy I could have eaten straight from the jug with a spoon! went to the Liscawn tonight for my mothers birthday meal all I can say is what a fantastic evening. I took a cake and candles and asked if they would mind bringing it out after the main course. I was happy to have it served in the carrier but they went above and beyond and put it on a glass cake stand and made my mothers evening. The food cannot be beaten in my opinion, I had the sizzle steak that comes to the table on a hot stone so you have the perfect steak for your own taste fantastic idea. Everyone enjoyed whatever meal they chose it was all fresh perfectly cooked and more then enough. It is a lovely relaxed atmosphere and the hosts and staff are really friendly would recommend to everyone and very reasonable and on our doorstep lucky us.

The service was very good on arrival, welcoming and friendly. However the food, there was a bit of a wait for what we ordered and my dish came 5 minutes before my partners. I had the satay chicken witch was very bland and obviously cold because I didn't want to eat alone. My partners food finally showed up, which mushroom and Stilton pudding with 10% filling and 99% air.

Arrived for lunch on Saturday, very quiet but pleasant, food very good, we were the only people in the bar/restaurant but then a group of six arrived and sat right next to us with a child who proceeded to cry all through the meal, is it too much to ask to just have a quiet meal!!! The food and drink were very good but I'm realizing why I don't eat out much anymore in this area, I know it isn't the pubs fault but people are just so inconsiderate nowadays!

I booked in several members of my family and myself into this hotel as it is close to HMS Raleigh. We stayed for just the Thursday night. The meals were reasonably priced and very good. None of my group of nine had any complaints or issues. Breakfast was also really good with a great selection of continental and full English. One minor - no black pudding. Would definitely return if in the area again.

I am glad the Liscawn has new management - it has definitely improved on the last time I visited.- Food was well presented.. maybe a little over-priced. Larger portions would be nicer please :)- Impressive that there was a really, really local ale - Crafthole Ale on tap...I am sure the restaurant experience is far better when there are more people, but my experience was just a little dreary. There weren't enough people dining or drinking! It was a bit like eating at home, just not having to do it yourself.

Just had a meal at liscawn as staying in area and local was fully booked sadly, as this is excellent ( finnygook inn). Kids had to share a starter, as there was only one portion available. camembert starter had missing camembert! Drinks not refilled between courses by waitress. main meal only had one Salmon portion available, despite the fact i asked prior to ordering if they didnt have any dishes on the menu. Everything was available to order apparently prior to ordering. the waiter commented on how dark our table was but didnt think to light the lovely candles that were on the table. The dishes served on sizzzling platter didnt follow with further plates to eat off the sizzling platter!! All in all it was a complete shambles and the male waiter just blamed the owner who had apparently gone away and left everything to go to pot! wont return sadly but recommend finnygook inn for excellent service and food.

Stayed two nights in the room with a four poster bed as no other rooms available. Friends stayed one night in a room in the barn conversion and enjoyed their stay. I felt it was a bit overpriced as the four poster bed was literally that, no drapes, nothing special. The bed squeaked as you sat on it which interrupted any intention to sleep, and the room itself didn't have any thing special over other hotels/rooms I have stayed at.The breakfast was nicely cooked, but service was a bit slow. There was not a full choice of alternatives if you didn't want a cooked breakfast - toast, cereal, yoghurt - this needs to be expanded to consider croissants/breakfast pastries. On checkout our problem with the bedroom was reflected in the bill and the manager said he would look into our complaint immediately as no one else had raised the query of a squeaking mattress before...maybe out of embarrassment?!As the manager said it was 'work in progress' on getting the property up to the standard he wanted, as he had only had it about 18 months, and we will be visiting our friends again soon, I will go back again to see what has improved.

Our first visit to The Liscawn yesterday for dinner after passing the sign on the main road numerous times and wondering what it would be like. We did a bit of homework on the Internet and it all looked very favourable and affordable, and was the case very much last evening when we spent a couple of hours there. Warm and friendly atmosphere, several people dining and we were made to feel very welcome by the Manager, a very pleasant chap. A little wait for food but would rather that and have it the way it should be as our meals were delicious. Homemade beefburger with amazing onion rings and superbly presented and the bubble and squeak mixed with shredded cabbage and onion with sausages and the most tastiest of gravy made for a pretty special meal out for us. Thank you. Enjoyed reading so many refreshing and complimentary reviews on here and am happy to add ours too now. We will be back very soon and feel it may be a regular stop for us as we pass by often.

I've been to dine at the Liscawn on more than one occasion, and called in on spring and summer days to have a drink outside in their covered seating area. The staff are always very friendly and welcoming, with a smile and exchange of pleasantries. The menu has enough variation to suit most, if not all, palates and I can assure you it's well cooked and very tasty. Plenty on the plate for those with big appetites.Prices are average; on one occasion last summer I paid £110 thereabouts for 3 of the group to have starters and pudding, while all 5 of us had mains, and drinks. In my eyes that's good value. It's clean, not overly fussy, and children are welcome. If you don't want to eat then sitting outside on a warm day with a drink (cold or hot) and watching the abundant wildlife that thrive in the valley, is nothing short of a pleasure. If you're lucky you might see the baby swallows that we saw in the nest in the roof.Give it a try.

Visited The Liscawn Inn with my hubby and little man for dinner on a beautiful sunny evening. The food really was some of the best we have eaten out in quite some time... but... the only seats placed in the sunshine were by the play park and the other outside seats, under the veranda were covered in bird crap so we opted to eat indoors. We were the only people in the place and the only atmosphere was the caterwauling from the kareoke in the other room. My little man got a fit of the giggles at the noise! Thankfully the noise subsided and the barman/landlord put some background music on to create some much needed ambiance. Service was friendly and efficient, food really was lovely... but...

We went to The Liscawn after reading positive reviews and I'm happy to say it was fantastic ! The prawns were very fresh and even the garlic bread which came with them was perfect! My boyfriend had the gourmet burger which is made which a good amount of chorizo which he really enjoyed and I had the pulled bork sandwich which was a special which was also cooked perfectly. The portion sizes are extremely good value for money as both meal only cost around £9 neither of us could finish everything so they kindly wrapped it up for me so I could take it home. My boyfriend also asked if they could make some caramelised onions for his burger which they kindly added with no extra cost. We had a lovely evening and will definitely be visiting again!!

However I have never been to a restaurant as part of a large party where the manager has asked the guests if everything is ok etc. He was very noticeable by his absence this was noticed by other at the event. This was noticed by others at the party and others who have attended previous events have noticed this is normal. The manager and his wife and keen to take the cash but fail on front of house skills. They need to learn that a reputation is based on more than the quality of the food.
