Exceptional vegan options. Really clear that great care has gone into the quality of the dishes and range of the menu. Brilliantly executed food all complemented by attentive staff with good vibes.

A real friendly local pub. Went on quiz night. BUT it is closing 😪. From what I was told that will be by the end of May...show your support and pop in.

Friendly atmosphere, delicious salads

Ribeye Sunday roast that brings back memories of home cooking. Abundant portions, flavourful vegetables and meat cooked to the point. It's a family-run business: simple and great. Only the ribeye roast came with the Yorkshire pudding, otherwise, I'd have loved to have the lamb. The beer selection is good, nothing fancy. The place and decoration are very simple.

Always fabulous, food and well-kept beers. Friendly family-run local. Getting ever harder to get a table, especially for their excellent Sunday lunch. One year on, we've not changed our minds. Just as fabulous post pandemic. Another year on and the welcome and friendship is just as lovely but now The Lion excels with their Sunday lunch menu and new rice pudding dessert. It's all absolutely delicious. And another year... Just as good 👍 In our opinion, the best pub Sunday lunch in Bristol, but don't tell anyone. 😋

What a little gem, fantastic Sunday roast enjoyed by all, piping hot cooked to perfection and delicious; also must mention the Rice Pudding which was amazing, staff were friendly and helpful and such a reasonable amount charged. Will definately be popping in again on our next visit to Bristol

Recently visited The Lion for Sunday Lunch with a large group - absolutely amazing food and great service- without a doubt the best Sunday lunch I’ve eaten and the vegetarians were well catered for too. Worth booking in advance though as it was very busy.

Good little boozer. Marks off because there was football playing on the TV when we walked in. It’s not the football that was the problem though. A woman by the bar who seemed to be friends with the barman glanced at me and my friends and muttered something, with full disdain, like: “are they all coming in to watch the football?” Maybe because I have a shaved head, I don’t know. I actually came in to taste the ale and get as far away from the football and muttering killjoys as possible. But it wasn’t a great start. Pint was ok but the mood was a bit bad. You might say don’t judge a pub based on the comment of a random punter, but I’d argue that punter and pub seemed inextricably linked, and our feeling was we weren’t exactly welcome. My moral would be: don’t judge people coming into the pub based on what you choose to show on your own screen maybe? Still a quality venue, on balance.

One of the best roasts in Bristol hands down. The staff were very accommodating, great atmosphere. Highly recommend

It is the most fabulous place to eat in, I found this place on the Spanish TV too as THE BEST SUNDAY ROAST IN BRISTOL! I love their Sunday Roast and any other dish that you would see in the menu ,as well as their desserts are all delicious!! The staff is very friendly and kind. You can feel the warmth atmosphere as soon as you get in, you feel like family! I highly recommend you to go and try whatever you like from the menu!!

The food was alright, just not really my thing. However some of the other patrons were pretty rowdy, and it was really loud.

I had been meaning to have a Sunday roast here for quite sometime, having heard good things and read the reviews!! I have to be brutally honest and say it was the worst roast I have ever had! Every element was shocking, my only regret is that I didn't complain. The staff were so lovely (no complaints there) that I didn't have the heart to say how bad it was! I struggled to even eat any of it! It was completely tasteless, no seasoning apparently they said you have to season it yourself. The roast potatoes and Yorkshire's looked and tasted like Aunt Bessie's! There were 2 breaded balls, with a filling that tasted disgusting (it was some sort of cheesy stodgy mess) they were also luke warm inside, there was lots of beef but it was thin poor quality! half a carrot, some cabbage and tasteless gravy. I hate giving bad reviews but I didn't want anyone else to waste there time trying it! I have to say the best thing on the plate was the English mustard, which I smothered the roast with to get me through it!

Came here for Sunday roast. The staff were nice and friendly But the food took tooo long to come. More than 45 minutes We ordered the roast lamb and roast beef. The lamb wasn’t good. The beef was okay not the best tho. The place is nice but a bit small and crowded

Went to the lion for a friend's 50th birthday party and it was brilliant. Lovely range of gins, amazing chicken curry, great little courtyard garden and amazing dancing☺️.

Vi ville gjerne ha middag, men de var egentlig fullbooket pga quiz senere samme dag. Dd skviste oss inn likevel 👌👌. Held familien var i sving og fantastisk hjemmelaget mat. Utrolig god salat ved siden av lasagne med mye forskjellig, bl.a. Granateple og reddik i tillegg til deg mer vanlige. Lasagnen var gjennomvarm og smakte godt 😋

Had the lamb and mushroom pie Sunday roast. Best Sunday roast we have had in a long time (possibly ever). Definitely the best vegetarian Sunday roast I've had. Lovely Staff and a nice vibe.

We were originally treated to The Lion in Cliftonwood by my sister-in-law as being a proud Bristolian for 26years I had moved south I can honestly say this is probably the best thing she has ever done on this occasion I took my parents and grandmother on a trip to visit which may have started by me needing a cauliflower cheese croquet. If you go you'll understand I emailed on Tuesday trying and hoping for a table as we were coming up to Bristol Friday to Sunday and was informed 3 pm would be the best they could do I explained coming to see my parents and now living in Southampton we would sadly have to decline 10mins later I got an email back .. 12.15 will get you in. We entered the bar was meet by the lovely owner and seated our orders taken the owner is very friendly and open for a natter sadly we didn't have much interaction with the rest of his staff but they seemed polite and well presented we order our food came out and silence hit our table from our 2year old to my 87year old grandmother a first in my house I can promise. They made my son a "baby bowl" which to be honest could have fed any normal-sized adult but the silence continued for a good 15mins The food was outstanding from the meat itself to the sides of cabbage roast potatoes and whole roast carrot and cauliflower cheese croquet all cutlery hit the table at the same time and the out and out vote was Best Roast we had ever had while eating out. We finished our meal and had a brief chat with the owner to find his mum was the chef we can only say it makes sense that mum's in the kitchen it had that mums Sunday roast feel it didn't feel overdone and snobby it felt warm and l Homely our 2year did what and we'll feed and tired boy does and has a little melt down over how tired he is and out of nowhere 2 chocolate biscuits from the owner little man happy , parents and grandmother happy you defiantly have return customers. Please go please enjoy but please make sure I can get a booking next time I'm in the city hahaha.

It’s nice, of course. The beer was good. It was pleasant and relaxed, and I’d go again if I were nearby- probably a lot if I lived in the neighbourhood. But there was something missing. It’s like a Chat GPT version of a pub.

Came here on a Sunday with my son and wife, lovely day in March. We wanted a pint for old times sake - we used to live nearby - there was plenty of room at the bar but they refused to serve us a drink and said the garden "was shut up", despite the weather. Rude, embarassing service. Not a pub, as in public house, more just a gastropub.

Really quirky pub in Cliftonwood with probably the best vegan Sunday roast I've ever had! Great atmosphere with a log fire in the back and super friendly staff. I would recommend booking as it gets very busy.

Not happy and rude staff member. I don't know who owns this pub but they need to talk to the staff. I walked 20 minutes under the rain due to good reviews but disappointed. Even though no one in the pub they sat me down at the table almost outside the pub. When you get there, you will see the table which I just mentioned and you will understand me. There was 2 staff and one of them who was in the bar not even looked at my face while speaking with them.

Lovely burger. Attended again for a Sunday roast and it was delish. Great portion size (only ate half).

Best meal of our UK trip so far. This is a very authentic neighborhood pub (don't be put off by the 'gastropub' label) with a charming staff and a superb Sunday roast. Good value to boot - the servings were immense. High marks all round.

I think it is one of the best SundayRoast I have ever tasted. The staff were very friendly and attentive, they came by the table several times to ask if everything was ok. You can also opt for the vegetarian option. I recommend making a reservation as they are very busy.

Love this pub! I had my 50th b'day party there, my cousin had her 40th & a good friend had his 60th there. Fab pub, fab landlady & staff, fab food. Tucked away and definitely worth a visit.

Great local spot with pub quiz on Wednesday nights and the food is definitely much better than your average pub menu.

Awesome pub in a residential area. It’s run by a community who seems to enjoy their work there, thus it has a friendly and familiar vibe. Food is homemade by a lovely lady - we liked the burgers (try their signature garlic mayonnaise!) and thought Sunday roast was absolutely delicious.

Absolutely overrated. Neighborhood pub with ordinary food. Was told to wait 25mins before ordering. Appetizer was fancily named artichoke hearts dumped out of a can and sliced in half. Not sure why I had to wait for that. Stew and burgers were sold out. The next choice of Chilli was plain and 50% rice.

My friend recommended The Lion as she said its the best roast she's ever had and she was right. The food is utterly delightful, every single bit of food on the plate is made with love. Service is just lovely, the gentle who served us the first time we went was so helpful and accommodating. The pub itself is so quaint and cosy. It really has a wonderful homely feel. Can't recommend this place enough.

Beautiful, hidden gem in Clifton, Bristol. Small interior but lovely inside. Family-run. Excellent selection on tap. Always get served with a FREEZING cold glass by the friendly barman. And the food is to die for, even for vegetarians!

My sister and I booked a table last minute and were greeted by very friendly staff and a warm atmosphere. We ordered two vegan roasts and were just about to be served when we had a family emergency and had to leave. All the staff were super helpful and organised for our roasts to be taken away quickly. When we did get around to eating them, we were extremely happy! Absolutely delicious, quality ingredients, massive portions. We will definitely be returning very soon. Thank you very much guys, we appreciate you a lot!

Sunday Roast... interesting twist on traditional roast with addition of potato dauphinoise and cauliflower croquettes on the side of tender beef and all time favourites, such as roast potatoes and Yorkshire pudding, all covered in thick delicious gravy. Divine! Will be back for more without a doubt! Thank you, The Lion. X

The Lion is a sweet, friendly local pub. Great roast dinners, Friday suppers etc to have in or take away. The prices are reasonable and the ambience welcoming. It takes social distancing very seriously so it feels safe. Strongly recommend.

Easily the best roast dinner I've had. My food intolerances were easily catered for and my meal was still as substantial as my partner's who has no dietary requirements. Reasonably priced and with staff who are friendly and know their stuff about allergens. I would highly recommend The Lion.

Fabulous 'takeaway' Sunday Lunch at the weekend. Massive portion. Enough for two of us and a small lunch on the Monday. Definitely worth ordering this even during lockdown!

Delicious food great service and good value. Very filling meal. Caters easily for gluten and dairy free and veggie options. Our second visit. Will definitely go again. A regular venue for our grown children.

The pub is cosy with a real fire too greet you. The food was plentiful, although they were only serving roast dinner as it was Sunday. Two of our chosen options were no longer available. Service was excellent and very friendly staff. My biggest bug bear were the toilets. Very dirty and you had to go outside. I would forgive having to go outside, but there is no excuse for not cleaning them properly. It needs a lot of elbow grease in my opinion. Otherwise, it was a pleasant experience...

Mi hijo y mi novia nos han llevado a varios lugares excelentes para el almuerzo del domingo en Bristol, ¡pero este fue realmente el mejor! Es pequeño, peculiar y familiar, con mamá cocinando. La calidad y cantidad satisfarían a cualquiera y la bienvenida y el servicio fue excelente. Tuve el cerdo asado que era fantástico, con excelentes verduras y mucha salsa. Con una selección de cervezas reales, puede estar seguro de que volveremos. También tiene un excelente menú durante toda la semana.

A real pub !!! Its quirky, its small and the food is damn good. The Sunday roast is amazing and it's huge. I had the pie and that is also highly recommended.It is relatively expensive but very good value as evidenced by the fact that you have to book and they do sittings all day. The staff were very friendly and I am guessing it is family run because it definitely had that feel. I will definitely return.
