Looking for somewhere for lunch in NW Bristol ? , then look no further. We were looking for a place where we wouldn't be spending £50 for two of us , and so we visited The Lamplighters , as we hadn't been for a while . The new Chef there really excelled themselves , as our Barbequed Chicken we ate was wonderful. We also noticed that the Pub had some refurbishment since our last visit . This is becoming a landmark Pub, as its setting on the banks of the River Avon in its light blue exterior makes it stand out , and has steadily improved over the years, with a good selection of beers , including Bath Gem on tap, and my wife commented favourably on her glass of Chardonnay . The landlady was delightful to talk to , as we discussed several things concerning the local community and what could be done to support it . All in all we were delighted with our visit and will happily return again .

First time in a long time that a small group of friends visited here. I took my 15 month old rescue dog who is nervous and still getting used to the world. Unfortunately there were a couple of dogs with the run of the pub, the owners were oblivious. These little dogs were beautiful and very well behaved but my little girl was nervous which spoiled my experience of going out. Please can people be mindful of others when they take their lovely companions with them. This is a dog friendly pub but owners really should keep their dogs on leads. I don’t think it’s good manners to think that it’s ok for your dog to run around freely around a pub.

Food here used to be great. And the service too. Shocked tonight at the awful customer service. Ordered a butternutsquash and quinoa burger....got a beef burger... apparently fake meat but I'm not convinced. The toppings weren't right either. They refused to replace or refund. Husbands burger was missing it's toppings too. Then to top it off the kids got given chicken nuggets even though I corrected staff. Atleast she was apologetic and replaced these with what was ordered but still shocked that you can order something on the menu and be expected to be happy with being given something different. We won't be returning unless we hear of a change of hands. Really disappointed.

This is an excellent watering hole ,the staff and manager are fantastic. the person who prepares the frozen food is lazy and useless. The food is of average pub food. The menu here used to be great but the new owner is lazy and shouldn’t be running a pub. This would und be a gold mine and we’ll worth a visit .superb location, great garden right by the river . The prices of the drinks are high but it’s the food that lets this gem down. To the owner get someone who knows how to run this type of establishment and listen to your manager she is great .

Booked in for Sunday lunch, have been many times as locals, had to wipe down table as very sticky, ordered the beef option which when ordered previously was slow cooked brisket, arrived as thick slices which were tough & full of fat, made more difficult to eat with the blunt cutlery provided, portion size very small & just about warm, disappointing. As eating out is becoming less affordable in the current climate it more important than ever to serve up something acceptable.I understand the pressures the hospitality section is under with rising costs & we really want to support our local pubs but the food has to be of a decent quality. After spending around £100 ( including drinks) is it worth eating out ? Bring back the slow cooked beef it’s definitely a winner & make the food hot. On a lighter note, the person who served the table was very nice & the gravy was tasty

Booked online on Saturday 22nd Oct 2022 for 5 Sunday lunches for the following day with our daughter & 2 grandaughters together and pre-ordered all 5 meal options required. The Lamplighters confirmed the order & meal pre-orders online later on the same day. We arrived on time the next day but were kept waiting for 1 hour & 30 minutes before our meals arrived. When we noticed everyone else was being served we complained. When the meals eventually arrived the Yorkshire puddings were very over-cooked, the red cabbage inedible, roast potatoes were also overcooked & the table hadn't been wiped properly & was sticky. Very poor all round. Avoid at all costs.

Came here for evening meal with my daughter. Booked in advance for early evening and found we needed to since most tables were taken by people ha I guess an evening drink. The menu is rather limited and basic with a couple of ‘specials’ which were nothing special. There was a good choice of beers and they tasted good. The quality of the food was good and the service very good apart from the fact that you couldn’t have a tab and had to pay for everything each time you ordered, which is frustrating. We had a calamari starter with a chicken burger and sausage and mash with a wine and 2 beers which came to £45 which is pretty good value for money

A year and a half to the day I last visited this pub and things seemed to have changed for the worse. I ordered some food and drink from one of the rudest and worse bar staff I've imagined. She looked like a typical older aged student who wouldn't know how to say the sentances "thank you" or "excuse me" if she'd tried. I ordered fish and chips. What I actually recieved was something resembling fish and chips. Some half burnt shell of what was a fish and chips so tasteless, they might have well not have been peeled and cut. The 'dish' came with a serving of mushy peas which I didnt order in the first place. And all overpriced, to boot. Will not be going back there in a hurry, I can assure you.

We booked for Sunday lunch via the internet, but they had no record of this when we arrived. It wasn't too busy though so no problem - a table was set quickly for us. I ordered two cups of tea, a request which was met with a heavy sigh and much eye-rolling - switching on the kettle and finding a small jug for milk seems to have been an unreasonable task. Apparently it is also unreasonable to order food from the menu that they don't have in the kitchen - the order for the beetroot and lentil bake was met with a passive-aggressive response from the member of bar staff that it wasn't a bake, more of a Wellington. (Things on menus can change, fine, but don't get snotty with us that we don't know this.)We had five Sunday lunches (including the not-bake, which was in the end a filo parcel, complete with the kind of soggy bottom that makes Paul Hollywood wake up in a cold sweat) and a fish and chips. Following these six meals, three of us have felt queasy and had upset stomachs (one of whom has not eaten any other meals in common with the others, so while we can't be certain that it was the food at the Lamplighters that caused this, it seems likely). Nobody's been ill enough to warrant seeing a doctor or anything, but it's not just the filo tart that suffered from a bit of a soggy bottom.Suspicions about hygiene aside, the food was poor. Roast potatoes, carrots and parsnips were not bad, but the meats (beef, chicken) were very underwhelming. The fish was awful - dry, overcooked, and cardboardy (presumably to match the cardboardy chips). The top half of the filo was crisp enough, and the lentil and squash filling was okay, with lentils that were cooked enough without turning mushy (something this sort of dish is often afflicted with, so a plus for the Lamplighters on at least this small point), though the kick of chilli and dried mint would have worked better if tempered with a more generous hand with the squash. I ordered two portions of ice cream for the children in our party and, because I'm a glutton for punishment, another tea (which was as disappointing for the bar staff as the first round). The tea took a while, and the ice cream even longer. The staff member who brought it was presumably having a better day than the poor woman who I kept cruelly forcing to switch on a kettle: she was warm and friendly with her apology for the delay, as she had been throughout the afternoon. We left wishing we had ordered our cups of tea from her and our food from somewhere else entirely.

Visited the Lamps on Xmas eve with friends, to be told they were closing at 9.30pm. This was a big shame as it was busy and we were there for the night, but had to leave at 9.20ish. Visited again after watching Bristol rugby and entered at 10.25 on a Friday night. There were only 4 other customers in there and basically the bar staff had decided to shut for the night, which I can understand except 4 customers had just walked in! Surely they could have served us one round of drinks? It doesn't bode well or encourage you to visit the pub.A lot of effort went into saving this pub after it had been shut down for years, its now been sold to St Austell brewery and not much effort is being made in welcoming the punters if it is slightly inconvenient for the staff. Lets hope you are still there in a year!

My Grandad wanted to visit this pub as he used to visit many years a go whilst the ferry was at Avonmouth. We booked a table for 3 adults and 2 children. It had taken roughly an hour to get through on the phone but a table was booked for Sunday at 1400. We arrived just before our reservation time and no one could find our reservation, it had been booked under a different name. Finally we were seated, no one informed us how we order and when my husband asked for a menu, he was given 1 to share between 5 of us. We settled on 2 beef, 1 pork and 1 child's chicken and some type of vegetable option for the other child. It was about 14.10 when we placed our order. 14.45 came and still no food. One of the waitresses came over to inform us that actually they'd ran out of beef and we could have pork or chicken but they would need to start cooking it as its still not been started yet.We asked for a refund and left. We managed to find a place not too far away and had a carvery for a better price. Dissapointed.

My daughter had sausage and mash which she said was nice, and I had sesame coated chicken 'strips', although they weren't what I'd call strips, more like chunks, but very tasty. They need a sauce of some sort with them though, something like sweet and sour, but that wasn't on the menu;so I asked for chutney ( which was on the menu), but I didn't get it. Also ordered two cappuccinos which the barmaid forgot initially. On the plus side, I accidentally gave her two £20 notes instead of one, and she gave me one back, so that was very honest of her. The lamplighters used to do the BEST Sunday lunch so was looking forward to going recently but was left very disappointed. The quality of food has really gone down hill, it was the worst roast I’ve ever had mainly due to the foods used being poor quality, veg tastes like it was frozen, meat was cheap and also potatoes hard/under cooked.. Only gave 2 stars as the beer gardens been redone and that is lovely. Such a shame they’ve cut corners and cut the quality of the food to save money. Wont be returning for food thats for sure.

The £10 Sunday lunch sounded very appetising but I'd stick to the quality ales and lagers the pub has. It's a shame, it's lovely and peaceful with great garden area but it's let down terribly by the quality of food. Corners have definitely been cut to make money on the Sunday lunch. Glazed gammon was heavily salted, and I appreciate gammon can be salty hence soaking it pre cook but this was shocking. Parsnips were inedible and I could barely get a fork into one to try. Yorkshire pudding was from Iceland and the roast potatoes looked and tasted as if they'd been frozen, certainly not homemade. The kitchen was excellent when the pub opened but under new ownership the food has went rapidly downhill. Really unfortunate for a good pub.

We will definitely go back and I would recommend the Lamplighters to anyone who is looking for something special

Basic menu but enough on there to choose from and was most definately home made ! Had chicken burger and a chicken and bacon salad with chips and side of sweet potatoe fries all was lush.Pleasently suprised to see a good selection of drinks. Yes the decor is old but suits the style of the pub ! I would reccomend for a bite to eat or a quiet drink by the river and will definately go back !

Went here for lunch. Pretty view outside. Barmaid seemed confused with the till. Took ages to be served & the food took even longer. Carpet is filthy. Whole place needs a deep clean. Could be a nice olde worlde pub.

As a group of friends we decided to meet here as it was middle distance for us all to travel. We had a read through the reviews and thought maybe it wasn’t for us, (2 chefs and 2 die hard foodies) but with time going on and unable to think of somewhere suitable we decided we would stick to our original plan and if food wasn’t acceptable we would just complain.

Came here a few times last year and had a great meal every time, but somethings changed, the food is awful! and it's not just that, it seems like the general atmosphere is different, I was told that the pub has been taken on by a Brewery so maybe they have brought in a new chef or have changed suppliers, whatever it is it's not good! also the bar staff seem to have changed, not sure if that's the Brewery or just coincidence but they don't seem as experienced or as happy! will not be back in a hurry!

Been there before and always had a nice meal! We waited over an hour for main including kids meals just for most of it to be burnt! It wasn’t even that busy! Our mains got whisked away if we wanted a refund! So we still paid nearly half the bill for the other bits and feel like we wasted two hours, really ruined the day! We did smell burning on the way in and joked about it- we should have ran then!

. . . decepcionante ?

Really fancied a ploughmans lunch. Looked up on trip advisor and decided to try it. Turned out it was a bad decision. Great big chunks of ham, looked like the end of a ham joint, dry and not nice. Ordinary sliced bread. Chunks of cucumber cut into great big chunks. Just looked like it was thrown on the plate. It was a lot of money for a very poor meal.

Haven’t been here for about six months and I remembered the ploughman’s was absolutely spot on so thought I was on a sure bet this time. I was however a little disappointed. The pork pie was so so, pastry wasn’t crisp and not much meat. The slab of cheese was no where near as thick as before, the bread was four small slices of bulk standard shop bought loaf with just two small prepacked butter portions. The best bitcwas a reasonable piece of ham. All in all not the best andxat £10.95 not cheap! Hopefully a blip?

Went in on my own like I always do and all I could hear was shouting and fowl language coming from upstairs. Must’ve been a bunch of friends just having a good time but I’m not quite sure because I don’t have many friends myself. Either way it was a distasteful experience and that includes all 3 courses which I ended up just looking at and not eating.

Attended this pub around Christmas, possibly the 21st/22nd. Decor and seating arrangements lovely, plenty of space and nice vibes throughout. We had booked the Christmas dinner, with starters and desserts, but all 4 of us were less than impressed with the quality and apparent care of the food. The man serving carried a tea towel that looked like it was there before they knocked the original pub down. Boisterous group of lads upstairs having a lovely time which only added to the festive spirit and excellent feeling of the night. The young staff working were very polite and capable, although the young lady tending to the group upstairs appeared to be doing so alone, concerning when you consider there were over 20 of them, but she managed to keep them in control. As a pub I’m sure it’s lovely for a quick half but, frankly, I wouldn’t feed the dog my dinner.

Popped in here with 6 friends for Xmas work do, planned on eating and drinking as a friend had recommended it, I was told "It's a really nice place for a decent meal and good drinks" we arrived at approx 6:45pm and were met by a group of 5 or 6 lads outside shouting and swearing at each other in jest but not the best start, entered the pub to a horrendous noise coming from the upstairs area, it must have been a football/rugby team on their xmas party which don't get me wrong I understand lads want to mess around and have a good time but this was ridiculous, there was beer being spilt over the balcony, singing (screaming) as loud as they could, stamping on the floor and loud swearing, this may sound as if i'm being a bit boring etc but you literally couldn't hear the person next to you speak as it was so loud! several people left whilst we were there because of it, the trouble in my opinion is that the bar staff were all very young, two young lads probably 18-19, a young girl probably about the same who seemed to be in charge! she thought it was hilarious and openly joked with the lads and revelled in the fact that they sang her name every time she went upstairs, I asked the young man at the bar if someone would have a word with them as the noise was unbearable and he just shrugged, the "Bar supervisor" said others had to understand that the lads were ordering a lot of food and alcohol so the pub had to put up with it! she is clearly to young and naive to be a bar supervisor, anyway the 7 of us promptly left and caught the train to gloucester road where we found some great places to eat/drink.

Called into the Lamplighters for lunch today, our first time of visiting. We both chose from the specials board, red snapper with sauté potatoes & kale and fried hallumi with chunky chips, mushy peas & tartare sauce. Both meals tasted great and were nicely cooked & presented to a restaurant standard. Friendly, attentive staff, great food & good real ale with CAMRA discount... perfect! We had been planning to visit for a while and now wish we hadn’t delayed our trip. Will definitely go back soon to sample the main menu.

We came for lunch on the recommendation if a friend who had visited this pub during a weekday evening: an interesting location we had never been to before and worthy of a visit. Staff were friendly and efficient and our lunch was first class. I had beef (brisket I think) which was tender and full of flavour, so much better than a slice of tough topside. Vegetables were cooked to perfection. My husband had chicken which he said was very good. Portions were very generous and neither is us could finish. Staff checked during our meal that we were happy - and we were ! I think they could easily do smaller portions and keep punters happy but I'm assuming they have done their market research and certainly they had many bookings. The pub could possibly do with a bit of redecoration but it has a nice ambiance, a genuine history and prices very reasonable. Much better than going to a Clifton pub up to its elbows in style, but with poor food and attitude. Recommended will be trying a mid week meal next - well done Lamplighters
