Previous visits have been fantastic so as we were in Sussex we checked opening hours on TripAdvisor and drove over. Really disappointed to find it shut. On further investigation it’s now an AirBnB.

We planned lunch at The Lamb on a walk in the area on Friday 8 October. We found the out closed and looked like it wasn't trading any more. Massive disappointment as we had checked Internet and found no evidence it was shut. AVOID!

If you're the sort of person who complains about a stray dog hair on the sofa or a bar door that doesn't always shut properly then "The Lamb" is probably not for you; but if you're the sort who prizes cozy atmosphere, tasty food, comfortable beds and a stunning setting then "The Lamb" is undoubtedly what you're looking for. From the moment we stepped through the wonky front door of this ancient inn and were made welcome by the charming owner we knew we were onto a good thing. The warmth of four wood-burners around the building, the comfortable seating and the extremely friendly and helpful staff created an ambience that made Storm Jorge raging outside seem unimportant. Add to that delicious lunches and dinners, the very well-kept pints of Harvey's and the background music from the pleasantly eclectic vinyl collection and we had no doubt that we'd be returning. Our dog also enjoyed his stay, particularly the wood-burners!. There were no awkward rules about where he could or couldn't go; no-one made a fuss about him because they're used to dogs at "The Lamb" and that, compared to some places we've visited, was a considerable relief. In summary, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and fully intend to return.

We have been to this delightful pub numerous times but our last experience as part of the party of 10 celebrationing a friends birthday was worse than disappointing. The owner clearly has no regard that his customers experience is always 100%. No manager in sight a staff of 3 were left to cope with a restaurant at full capacity and were trying their best to keep their heads above water. As stated in the previous review we agree with all that is said and cannot help likening it to fawlty towers but without the humour. We won’t be going back.

Hugely disappointed with our evening in terms of the lack of organisation and service. This was a special occasion for my wife's Birthday and we we were grossly let down by a woeful lack of people to serve what was a completely full restaurant. The barmaid was in tears and kept apologising but credit to her and the two others who tried their best to look after everyone. There was no ice in the place so white wine was served in a cooler with just tap water and we were given no wine glasses as they had run out. We were eventually given three glasses (for 10) which were hot just out of the dishwasher and the rest of us used gin glasses and water tumblers. Two of the red wines on the list that we requested were not available. We experienced long delays in being served with drinks as the poor staff were just completely overwhelmed. On the positive side, the food itself was very nice and no complaints there. We were also grateful to Krystle and the other two staff for trying their best to look after us. What is most disappointing, is the lack of response from the owner James to my expression of concerns in emails. Whilst initially responding and saying he would come back to me after seeing the staff, there has been a resounding silence, despite my further requests for contact. I see this lack of respect is also shown to another recent reviewer. We spent a lot of money on this meal and have had good meals there in the past but sadly we could not recommend anyone to go there after this experience.

4 of us agreed to meet up for Friday lunch.2 of us of course decided to sample the above dish -which stated consisted of cod/crayfish/smoked haddock&scallops.Neither of us(in our 80's) are strangers to this signature dish.Waitress said it was "todays special" as well as being listed in double sided A4 menu-bonkers number of choices to cope with surely?? Neither of the pies had ANY pieces of fish-must have been pureed in with the sauce??? Never been so treated anywhere.Somebody has to get a grip FAST. Then to find on leaving on blackboard listed @£18!!!! Have already sent 2 emails in 24 hours-1st one ignored. Wife settled for sausages&mash with"onion gravy"-when arrived no onions-they are only 20p each.Just load of liquid. To cap it all-doors to both wood burners were open-so not being used correctly surely??-bulk of heat wasted.

We arrived at half past twelve on a week day. It seemed distinctly peculiar that, at that hour, the inn had run out of bread and could not offer any of its range of sandwiches. R had the butternut soup - with an end of bread, instead of the focaccia on the menu - and said it was good. The portion was not generous. A had the mac and cheese (again, no focaccia and no apology/price adjustment), which looked nice, but she didn't wolf it down. T had the sea bass, which he enjoyed. O and I shared the fish and chips, which was disappointing: the fish was pretty tasteless and still we had no problem persuading him to eat the fish before the chips, almost all of which he left uneaten. Service was slow, which I'd have forgiven had the meal been better. We had to repeat our dessert order twice; and a dog kept crawling around our feet and under the table. On the other hand, we had a really delicious cider on the recommendation of the inn.

Booked for lunch and had a wonderful meal. Started with venison carpaccio which was superb, full of flavour with a bit of heat from the crust it had been rolled in. Followed that with the shepherd's pie which was as good as it gets - really flavoursome with good seasonal vegetables. We also had a couple of pints of Harveys best which was excellent - clearly a well kept cellar. Service is extremely friendly and it was nice to spent some time talking to James Braxton who owns this wonderful place... Definitely recommended and one to return to... Thanks!

Visited here for a drink as a couple, after the welcoming ambience and array of eclectic decor giving you the warmth feeling of appreciating a proper country pub with open lit fires & a retro record player for a choice of vinyls,we decided to book a stay for Valentine’s evening. Fantastic stay! Fabulous food! Opting for a sharing starter of baked garlic & rosemary camembert with venison carpaccio, olives & homemade focaccia, followed by a sharing board of whole lobster in thermidor sauce, fillet steak, homemade chips & salad, with homemade sticky toffee pudding, toffee sauce & madagascan vanilla seeded ice cream. In the morning we had a choice of a good muesli with a fruit compote & yoghurt followed by salmon & eggs or a good full english with orange juice, tea or coffee. Quality is clearly a pride for the proprietor James using local produce. Our room was quaint, very clean with the most comfortable bed , great shower & again quality soft furnishings, towels. Staff in all aspects were great, especially a young lady by the name of Crystal who was non stop at pleasing the customers. Thank you to James & his staff for a most pleasant stay! You must be proud for the achievement of a fantastic inn!

We’re just back from a fantastic weekend at the beautiful bohemian Lamb Inn, Wartling. We stayed in one of their rooms, which was clean and comfy. The food was fantastic and the whole team looked after us brilliantly throughout our visit. Plenty in the local area to do; we tramped about the countryside a bit and had a day being blown along the promenade at Bexhill-On-Sea. Great to come back to a hot shower and have a cosy fireside drink. To top it all off, the vinyl collection is amazingly eclectic and they’re pretty relaxed about you rummaging through! Just a lovely place to stay, with bags of character and warmth.

Lovely main meal of fish & chips and sausages, mash & veg, just let down by the starter of Sussex Smokey. We’ve had it before in other local pubs and we’ve obviously been spoilt by it having a lot of fish, but there just seemed so little in this fish, also it was served with a very undercooked doughy bread which wasn’t nice. However the main dishes were very good ( albeit it there’s ironically no Lamb on the menu at the Lamb Inn! ) the menu is small and could benefit from perhaps a pie on it? That aside the pub itself is a lovely pub, great atmosphere with record player which you can chose your own records ( love it!) and open fires and the barman was very friendly and personable and couldn’t do enough for you. Well definitely return here but just won’t have the Sussex Smokey!

Overall the stay here was just OK. On the positive side, the owner and staff were all truly lovely, friendly and helpful. However, we encountered a few issues. Firstly, our room was tiny, which you would expect in an old coaching inn... but there was no room to swing a cat (or weekend bag)! It also looked like our room was cleaned a few weeks ago and left to gather dust. It felt quite unclean - there were lots of hairs behind the sink, dust everywhere and old sticky ring marks from glasses on the bedside tables. Then, we had an early sitting for dinner and they had already run out of several dishes - on New Year’s Eve!!! It wasn’t that big a menu! So bizarre! We were only there for a night but even the next morning, wish that there had been more made of a communal area for staying guests. We also didn’t feel like it was a locals’ pub - there were very few people gathered at the bar and the atmosphere wasn’t hugely inviting either (in a decorative sense). Don’t really feel that the website/reviews were representative of the reality. Needs a bit of an update to compete with the kind of quality gastropubs in Kent/East Sussex. Quite disappointed. Shame, as the team were genuinely very good.

Very disappointed, went on Monday after Christmas, obviously had been busy over Christmas and didn’t really care. Tried to convince me that the soup was squash and lemongrass but was green with celery strands in!! Told the whitebait was breadcrumbed but was paprika floured and fried, smokie had little or no fish in! Cumberland sausage served in a bowl swimming in wine laden gravy. But the steaks were fairly tasty. Waited ages for service and the Barman admitted that the chef was on day off! If you have bookings why wouldn’t you hire even a agency chef. A waste of a evening out.

We visited the Lamb several years ago and thought it was wonderful. Then when we went back a few months later we were disappointed. However, we decided to try once more and were very sorry we did. The staff is very kind, the service good, the ambience lovely but the food was not good. Our guests seemed to enjoy theirs but ours was pretty awful. The worst was a cut of meat that smelled truly dreadful. It should have been questioned at the time but we did not wish to upset our companions therefore did not complain. I don't think we will try again.

Our second stay at The Lamb Inn was lovely. Although our room wasn’t ready, we were settled in the bar with complimentary drinks and before long we were in. We had reserved a table for dinner, with friends who were also staying, and the dining area was full. We thought the menu choices were great; and all 4 of us went for something different. The wine list was interesting too; a good Rioja & Pinot noir. We were not so keen on the house white - possibly a Pinot Grigio? The breakfast, now served in the bar, was a little disappointing - as before we had local yoghurts, and toast - it’s a one course cooked breakfast now. Good coffee though!

Just moved to East Sussex and exploring local pub restaurants. Booked lunch for my wife’s birthday. Arrived 1pm car park full so good sign. Bar looked full with customers eating lunch at window seats but we were shown to a and dingy room on the road side of the pub. The room was unheated and empty. We saw no waiting staff and were shown to our seats by a very pleasant barman who appeared harassed and was being kept busy behind the bar. He did bring us a wine list and we sat for 15 minutes in a cold empty room without being invited to order drinks. He did say that they had other booking for lunch but we didn’t wait to find out. We left at 1.15. Not an experience we will be repeating any time soon.

I've always praised The Lamb in Wartling as one of the best pubs to go to in the local area (Polegate/Pevensey/Eastbourne). The atmosphere, service and food has always been fantastic. They seemed to have a bit of a blip towards the start of the year with problems with staff etc which meant I hadn't visited as often. However, pleased to see it was just a blip, I ate here with my friend on Friday night and we had possibly the best Lasagne I've ever eaten. We got a whole casserole dish worth and both took the leftovers home with us. It was great value for money and we were told it was on the menu to welcome the new Italian manager, who was very nice and chatty. Service was great and I also highly recommend the arancini balls which were absolutely delicious. Look forward to my next meal here!

On arrival the nice waitress was clearly embarrassed to inform us that 3 of the 4 “specials” were sold out. This was at 7.10pm on a Saturday night with the restaurant less than one third full. We went straight to main courses and one meal failed to arrive. Rule No 1: get everyone’s meal out at the same time. Simple. Food was mediocre at best. We then ordered coffees. No decaf available. Seriously?!? “Would we like regular coffee or do without?” We ordered 2 large whiskies. Not enough available for 2 large ones, but we could have 2 singles. Etc etc etc. Sorry guys, but at £40 a head this really was not worth it. If a pub is going to charge these prices, then they need to get their act together and get it right.

This place has bucketfuls of character, the rooms aren’t huge but the bed is!! super king and beautiful linen. This is a 16th century coaching Inn set on the edge of the Pevensey Marshes. Lottie is an absolute joy, bright, bubbly and nothing is too much trouble. James Braxton (Antiques Road Trip) is a wonderful raconteur. Our food was superb, Chiili Beef and Tricolour salad to start, Ribeye and Sausage and Mash as a main (a side of Mac’n’cheese with truffle was a step too far). Once again we were in a large group, however the majority of our group were served a very poor standard of food, some even came with added extras of a variety of hairs, drinks which had been ordered at the bar were over charged and served wrongly. The staff were doing their absolute best however we later discovered that the owner had been aware of the short staffing situation but did nothing to help them out with this on the evening. He was in fact very rude and arrogant after further complaint! A once lovely place which I would have recommended is now definitely off the list! Don’t bother!

We had a dreadful meal at the Lamb Inn sadly. Very poor choices of food for veggies with the special ‘vegan burger’ so dry and bland and the replacement salad being served on a plate hotter than hell. Staff were disorganised and appeared to be around very young and inexperienced. Not enough place settings, chairs, glasses despite pre-ordering. Meals started coming out before they had even served all the drinks. Puddings were a farce, cinnamon icecream was just vanilla with a sprinkle of cinnamon on top. Bowls were chipped and unhygienic looking. Multiple hairs found in food. We couldn’t pay the bill as young staff did not want to make a decision about the discount due to the multiple errors and seemed to scared to call the owner. No manager available. They told the owner we had left without paying which was absolutely not the intention. Owner was rude and aggrogant to those in our party who tried to give polite constructive feedback including shoving a steak in my veggie friend’s face.

Went to this pub for a midweek lunchtime meal with my brothers family, 2 young well behaved children, after checking that the staff could accommodate a family of 6 we sat at a table and waited for over an hour and a half to be served our food. The pub was not very busy, but there was only 1 person serving at the bar, taking orders, delivering meals and apparently only 1 person in the kitchen. The only reason that I have given 2 stars is that they did eventually send out some complimentary garlic bread as the children were starving and they did reduce the bill. I would definitely not use this place again.

We had been to this pub several times and had an absolutely fantastic time- setting is perfect and Sunday Roasts were delicious. Sadly when we had a birthday lunch there recently things went from bad to worse. We sat in the garden at a large table which was excellent but things went downhill from there. Service was non existent - we had to get our own menus, wine glasses, order at the bar and for our effort it took almost two hours to get food. When it arrived the roasts were decent but the tuna Nicoise wasn’t like anything I had seen- hot fried potatoes, not much lettuce, no green beans, egg, anchovy, tomatoes or vinegarette dressing to be seen. The mac and cheese side was pasta floating in cheese water and the chilli beef was as unusual as the rest!

We received an exceptionally warm and friendly welcome. We were permitted to wheel our bikes through the pub into the rear garden so we could ensure their safety.

Pleasant inside, though not much parking on the corner of a busy road. People friendly, hence the two stars. Prices high for mediocre food hiding behind elaborate descriptions. Didn’t see any veggie options. I’m not vegetarian, so had the seared tuna starter as a main course and asked for bread with it. I didn’t realise ‘seared’ means ‘not cooked’. As in actually raw. The bread was dry and hard (unsuccessful attempt at garlic/rosemary bread?) and came on a board not a plate (pet hate), as did my husband’s ordinary looking burger. I wasn’t asked what size drink I wanted, no one came to the table to ask if the meal was ok and there was no toilet roll in one of the cubicles. Maybe we just caught them on a bad day, or the waiter was new? Crossed off our list anyway.

Have passed the lamb a couple of times when we have been on holiday in East Sussex. We very rarely have the opportunity to go out in the evening for a meal so while we were away staying at relatives we had a golden opportunity to go out for an evening meal and not have to take the kids!

My partner and I ate here on our first night’s stay at the Wartling Place Country House on the recommendation of Rowena, the owner. We were not disappointed. The staff were very friendly, our food was delicious and the all-important wine menu offered some interesting wines.

Superb meal in great surroundings, staff was really helpful and friendly. The food was amazing for all of us (we had the BBQ pulled pork, seabass and chicken risotto). I would most definitely go again when we're in the area.

With so many pubs now having the 'benefit' of corporate make-overs it is a real treat to find a pub that is truly authentic in its hospitality, ambience and style.

When we arrived in this delightfully quirky inn at lunch time, the owner was lighting the woodburning stove and his welcome was very warm too. We then proceeded to have a rather interesting meal. My friend chose a starter of filo pastry stuffed with crayfish and crab meat but it was clumsily made and soggy so when asked if it was pleasing she explained why it was not. Mine host accepted the criticism, explained how he would rectify it and then they agreed she would have a dessert instead. The main courses passed off uneventfully and enjoyably. Now came the desserts. Both sounded wonderful. Mine was 'liqueur creme caramel with hazel nut meringue and salted caramel ice cream' - what's not to like? Solid creme caramel with no caramel, that's what! My friend chose treacle tart with toffee sauce and ice cream. It was cold and so was the sauce. We voice our disappointment and were quickly both served warm tart with warm sauce - yummy! The wine was delicious and reasonably priced and so was the coffee. The furniture is a delightful mixture of antique styles. The main dining room is very attractive. We will revisit.

Our second visit to this pub, first being two years ago and on both occasions my wife, I and two small people arrived after 2pm and were welcomed and happily accommodated for lunch. On this occasion I called just after 2pm whilst up the road at Herstmonceux Castle and after a quick check with the landlord who was also manning the kitchen, the friendly front of house confirmed we could still get food if arrived by 2.30pm.

This pub is a real find. The bar staff are warm and friendly, the food is delicious, and the viognier was so good we drank the lot. We will definitely be returning, if for nothing else, for the truffled macaroni cheese and the turntable with a staggeringly eclectic selection of music featuring all of our favourites. We would recommend it highly to anyone visiting this beautiful part of the world, particularly if you are staying overnight - the pub has pristine rooms, and the landlord even volunteered to get up at 7am on a Sunday to make us breakfast at the ridiculously early time of our choosing.

We went for Sunday lunch. The roast beef was £19 so we expected something exceptional but were very disappointed. Thick cold beef, overdone Yorkshire and Luke warm vegetables. We were given extra hot gravy which improved it. My in-laws enjoyed their fish and chips which was a positive. The desserts had to be chased and we waited 20 mins before asking. The pear tart was the size of about a biscuit for £7 but told both tasted nice. I usually only write positive reviews (feel free to look) but this was so disappointing I had to write. 104 pounds for four mains, two desserts and a couple of coffees.

Stopped by for lunch on Sunday with my wife. Although quite busy at the time, we were given a great table. For the lunch, we had the roast beef and didn't know which wine to accompany the dish. Unsure, we asked the young gentleman behind the bar, who recommended a great red wine to pair with my roast beef.

We dined with our coats on, very cold. The pub boasts 4 fires, not lit until we sat down, probably warmed up after we left. 1 hour between starters being collected and mains served. Both mains were not worth the wait. The owners left the pub with one chef on his own and two at the bar on a busy night. Not for me.

This was a dreadful experience. First of all, there was only one young lad attending to the bar, to the orders, serving customers and clearing away, none of which tasks he accomplished with any sense of customer service. The food looked and tasted dreadful as though it had been reheated from a pack. Two of the party found cardboard in their meals and a third one had to leave as he was feeling so ill and later discovered it was food poisoning from the meat pie. This is the worst experience I and my family have ever had when dining out and I would advise anyone to give it a wide berth. I am inclined to contact the Food Safety Standards Agency as with an experience such as we endured the pub should be closed.

Sunday lunch to celebrate my wife’s birthday. Group of 8 adults and two kids. Very nice pub with great service from Luke and his colleagues, and a good menu. Roast beef a little tough, but otherwise everyone was happy with their food. Fair wine list and the Harvey’s on draught was excellent.

This is my second visit here after a great first visit just after the new chef joined. My husband had the chicken shnitzel, aubergine chips and i think it was a tarragon mayonnaise- phenomenal! The chicken had a melting knob of butter on top that made it so moist and succulent! Aubergine chips- genius and soooo good! The mayonnaise brought it all together! I know because I stole half of my hubbys plate! I had the slow cooked beef pie, and the pastry was so flaky crisp, the beef was tender and melt in your mouth and with the silkiest mash potato I've ever had, this was a joy! i saw a few plates of fish and chips go by, and the fish was such a huge, plump piece- I think no expense is spared on quality produce! To top it off, we dined in a cosy corner, bathed in spring sunshine and the decor has a real medieval feel to it which i love. When you consider some parts of the building are 15th/16th century, it just felt so ambient!.This place is oozing character, has fantastic food and a quirky, fun, accommodating staff! the owner James is a truly gracious, wonderful host- and far funnier than he realises! Keep going!! I'll be back :)

We're so lucky in our area (Heathfield) to be within striking distance of some EXCEPTIONAL pubs. I think that maybe, just maybe, The Lamb could be my current favourite of them all. Toad in the Hole game is played here, the bar and decor are brilliant and ditto the food. I've never tried Carrot Cake Ice Cream before...lovely. The barman was a bit scary and didn't have an obvious sense of humour but it doesn't spoil my enjoyment of this marvellous pub. The Harvey's is always in good nick, too.

The Lamb Inn is a lovely cosy pub with rooms. The bars are very comfortable especially if you get a seat near one of the log fires. We were very lucky to have James Braxton himself as the host while we were there. He facilitated a very relaxed and friendly atmosphere where nothing was too much trouble. The evening meal was superb and enhanced by some fruity gin and wine. The bedroom was spacious with a very comfy bed. The bathroom had under floor heating - very welcome on a cold February night . A good selection of toiletries was a nice touch . £95 a night with a splendid breakfast thrown in was great value. Hope to return.

My first visit here, and what a lovely, cosy family-run inn! Very inviting and great service. The food was delicious too- I had the lamb inn smokie- so creamy and more-ish, followed by the chana dhal course. As an avid chef of indian food, i was really surprised at how good this was! I am definitely impressed by The Lamb Inn and will make it a must-stop whenever I am anywhere NEAR the area! I was told the chef is new, and if so, then welcome aboard- what a great addition!

In an old Inn full of character we were served an excellent Sunday lunch. My calves liver with bacon, gravy and mash was expertly cooked. The dessert menu was a bit heavy - some fruit would have been welcome. However my choice of creme caramel with coffee meringue (incorrectly spelt on the menu) and salted caramel ice cream was very good. One star deducted for two chipped glasses, four place settings on a table booked for 5 and late delivery of one drink.

Visited with friends on Saturday evening. Staff were running around with no co-ordination. We were offered drinks by several people onlybto receive none. I note that the bar was available, aside from expecting table service for the price of the food, there was rarely a member of staff there. Clear that whilst the management is away the service goes with them.

Being a bit of a Sunday roast connoisseur I’d heard good things about this pubs Sunday roasts! Booked it up (recommended) and had the three meat roast! Way too much for me BUT oh my god was it delicious. The meat was melt in mouth, Roasted potatoes just right, all homemade and with the biggest Yorkshire pudding I’ve had. The gravy stole the show, it was delicious and I’d love to know how they made it taste sooooo good! 10/10 (my first ever) I’ll be back for sure!

First visit for us to The Wheel Inn. We went there for lunch and we were not disappointed. The burgers were so good. The flavours were great, the beef was perfect and the portion size was just right. My wife had the steak which was cooked perfectly. Staff were super friendly and attentive. Everything was very reasonably priced too. All round great pub with great food and lovely staff.
