Rooms are clean and tidy, although they could clearly use some renovation/repair work. My toilet wasn't flushing and the bed side lamp didn't work. It's also a bit loud in the evening, because of the busy street and the pubs below, but that's something you can expect at this location. It's great that it's so centrally located: trains, busses and ferry are just across the street.

The room we stayed in was amazing with beautiful views of the Spinnaker Tower & HMS Warrior & was so clean & comfortable the young girls doing the housekeeping can be very proud. Each morning we went two doors down for breakfast at the Keppel’s Head which was delicious with a good selection & very good service. We also used the bar here & ate in the restaurant on our last night where Liam always provided top notch service he seemed to be everywhere (checking in guests, pouring drinks in the bar & taking orders & waiting on tables in the restaurant) overall a brilliant 3 nights stay & so convenient for visiting the Historic Dockyard.

Once again lovely roast Dinner, i have the Lamb which is cooked to perfection, top roast potatoes & the gravy to die for, my daughter had the Vegan option, which was just as good, in pic hungry so had taken bite out of Yorkshire Pud before taking pic - lol Still one of the best places for Sunday lunch, there is a small car park just across the road out back (meter parking about £2.70ish for 2 hrs), alternative take a bus and have a beer.

This hotel has been improved significantly since the terrible reviews a few years ago, but there is still a lot wrong. They completely fail to explain the parking arrangements in advance. You need to buy an on-street parking permit for £5 per 24 hours from the reception at the Keppels Head, the sister hotel two doors down from the Lady Hamilton that handles breakfast and check-in. Make sure you park in a JA zone residents' bay BEFORE you buy the permits (1st hour requires no permit), as they are usually full, so you could end up buying the permit but find nowhere to use it. Our room had things that needed attention, including a sink plug that did not work, a step in the bathroom with no edge marker that was a serious tripping hazard, no USB ports or shaver socket (so make sure to pack adapters), only two electrical sockets that were accessible, both nowhere near the bed (plus two others inaccessible behind the chest of drawers), no bedside lamps or light switches near the bed. Also, the wifi was flaky, so much so that the TV could not pick it up, so did not provide us with any viewing at all! The fire door at the top of the stairs is the only thing stopping intruders from entering the hotel corridors, as the front door is open during pub hours, but you don't have to go through the pub to get to the stairs. This is a serious security weakness, as the fire door does not lock itself unless pulled shut, so it is often ajar. On our first night, a teenage boy knocked on all the doors on our floor, and when we answered, he came up with a pretext to ask to come in! He was very likely a burglar who would have tried slipping the poorly installed Yale locks if nobody had answered. On the plus side, the room was clean, and breakfast was good. The hotel has potential to be decent if more attention to detail is given.

I would not recommend staying here. The room was meant to be a family room but was not big enough for 2 people never mind 3! The photos on the website are very misleading. Booking in is in the hotel next door but one and there is no customer service other than Booking for the Lady Hamilton. The bed was against the wall and not accessible for use for us both due to mobility issues. When we asked if bed could be moved out a bit there was no one available to help with this. We also needed plug sockets close to bed for medical purposes but was not offered an extension lead and only got one after having to ask. we did ask to speak to a manager or the owner only to be told there is not one on site and there was no way of contacting them. We managed to move bed ourselves only to find under it was dirty and floor covered in bits. The floor at side of bed was dirty and there were no mirrors in the room or desent place to hang clothes and moving round with 2 people in the room was near impossible due to lack of space. The room was at the back of the pub and walking through the bar was intimidating as customers watched your every step. There was a back door but this is where people stood to smoke. The bedding and bathroom were clean and towels were provided however there were no towel rails or shelves to put your personal items. You may ask why we stayed. The reason was because we were unable to get a room anywhere due to it being graduation week and had travelled a long way to visit Portsmouth and its close to the Navel Yards and shops so decided to make the best of it and stayed out all day. On a posative note, Portsmouth is a stunning place and would highly recommend visiting the Navel Dock Yard. To do it all you will need to allow 2-3 days so recommend buying the extreme expensive ticket which give a years access to all the attractions and is well worth it.

Ideal for co-op next door and the harbour, train/, bus station and historic dockyard a stones throw away. Parking straight outside the back door is handy too. £12.50 for 24 hours

This establishment is on the hard by portsmouth harbour. Very close to the portsmouth historic dockyard. It is one of three pubs in this small area. The others are the ship and castle, the ship anson and the lady Hamilton. The reason I have listed them in that order is that is the best first! The lady Hamilton is a narrow pub which is a locals bar, with a loud and coarse customer base! I wouldn't take women or children in this bar.prices are very reasonable but furniture is very dated. Staff friendly enough but fairly slow. I only use this establishment when I can't get into the other bars/pubs nearby. So in conclusion reasonable but not recommended!

This is a budget hotel and you get what you pay for. Double room was small with bed against the wall, 1 stool available. No staff available except a very busy lady at the bar. A great deal of tooing and frowing to the sister hotel, Keppel's Head , for booking in, keys, breakfast. Worst of all, a very dirty toilet in the room, along with sweary locals, means a single star is generous, but I've added one for the Kepple's Head, where the staff, food and decor was excellent. The reception here took note of my complaint about the toilet, but this was a very mixed experience.

If you like a bit of space and modern fittings pay the extra and stay at one of the better known hotel chains, Im not posh but i had to think twice about moving when i saw the room but tiredness ended that thought. Just for the record almost next door is the sister hotel to this one, its called Keppels Head Hotel, we stayed at this place the night after and was actually a bit cheaper but a lot better.

Not a massive menu choice but food was excellent quality, hot and plentiful. Staff were friendly and efficient, pub itself was quiet and comfortable.

Old, long slim bar catering mainly to tourists for food. Decent ales on tap but we were told to move, though we were sat at an unreserved table in the bar area. We saw a couple, with no booking, arrive after us asking for a table for food. We were asked to move, telling us that the table 'was' reserved. No apologies. They were given the table. We soon left.

Not too impressed, went to watch World Cup football, only one ale on the bar, was supposed to get 10% discount with ID card, but not all bar staff can understand that! Spent too long waiting at bar to get served as staff were outside having a smoke break, better off at the Invincible just around the corner.

I like the location of the pub as it is near restaurants and the sea. The breakfast was really nice and impressed that they offered a veggie breakfast and even had soya milk. However the breakfast is only served after 8am (which usually would mean I would have missed it everyday although luckily my work hours were changed for one week), so I really think they need to revise the timings! The room was a bit tired and past the kitchen and some old fridges, so that could be improved. Car parking surprisingly wasn't a problem, they give you a parking permit but places you can actually park with it are very limited to just a few bays on either road and you'll have to carry your suitcase to your room.

Called in for evening meal and couple beers on way to show at guildhall (20 min walk ) rather than going to wetherspoons ( next to guildhall ) The food here is fantastic good portions at a decent price. The only let down for me was the beer it was rank, London pride was cloudy and awful, the young barmaid behind the bar can only assume it was her first day as she was out of her depth at a busy time got no help from the other barmaid just left to get on with it. Didn't have any idea on pulling a pint. Will return fir the food but maybe soft drinks or spirits?

My husband and I called in to this pub for a quick drink after visiting the Historic Dockyard. When we arrived it was quiet but it did get much noisier when a group of men came to check in to the hotel. The pub has a feel of a cafe and there is a range of food on offer. It was fine for a quick drink.

Visited today with the family as heard good things. Reasonably priced roasts but didn't do pudding as thought it was expensive. Our meals were out within 6 minutes so very efficient. Frozen boiled veg and Yorkshire pudding. Lamb and pork was ok but no crackling and no apple sauce. Chicken was dry and chewy and no stuffing however the roast potatoes were lovely. Crispy on the outside and fluffy in the middle. Staff were good, it was very busy and they were coping well. Overall not to bad.

On what turned out to be a particularly cold, early January day, (and, oh boy, was it icy in a Force-whatever wind!), my fellow-retired pal suggested a long over-due visit down to the D-Day Museum sited on Southsea's long sea-front Promenade. After a 30 year hiatus, our trip was absorbing and well worth it..even freezing to death on the magnificent WW-II Landing Craft-Tank moored on dry-land outside the Museum, it was still a riveting visit, though so blustery was the very strong wind that visitors to the uppers decks of the craft were forbidden..just in case any hapless tourists pitched over the side! Not having felt such a wintery blast as that in this country for many a year, aforesaid mentioned pal & I decided we needed a 'serious' warm-up and so lunch beckoned in Old Portsmouth.. a location just half a mile or so hence as 'the crow flies' that I've been very fond of since my time as a young Royal Naval Petty Officer Cadet Instructor in the CFF at my old grammar school in Winchester in the 1970s, but somewhere that, alas, I've not often returned to in the intervening years. So parking up near the quayside in the old part of the city, (formerly home to Charles Dickens, born amidst these evocative cobbled streets in February 1812), we took a wander past some of the splendid ancient buildings, interspersed between more modern-looking properties that were, to all intents & purposes, built in the gaps of the former bombed-out houses, courtesy of the Luftwaffe visiting this most famous naval port numerous times during WW-II. As we rounded a right-hand bend on the cobbled pavement, and caught the icy blast again, there before us lay the impressive harbour, the Gun Wharf Keys shopping centre, the incredible Spinnaker Tower and just beyond that, our nation's two new, mighty aircraft carriers sitting quietly at their moorings and, standing under an old Victorian street lamp, a half-memory started to form. But keen to get out of the cold, we turned around and found ourselves in front of a gorgeous looking Inn called Spice Island..and happily it now being mid-day and stomachs begging to be filled, we opened the door, immediately revelled in the warmth therein..and headed to the attractive old wooden bar. The Inn itself is literally right on the quayside and the first thing that caught my eyes as I looked about me, were the wonderfully large picture windows overlooking the harbour.. and so the two of us immediately bagged a vacant window seat in front of one of them, grabbed a menu and, as is always our 'test eat', plumped for the battered fish & chips.. and for me, as the non-driver, a pint of my favourite Aspalls Cider..! Sitting on the comfortable bench seats looking out of the window with our pints in front of us, (all served by the lovely Freya), I gazed across at the docks and the, now, shopping centre on the opposite quay-side beyond,..and it suddenly came back to me as I happily sat there on this cold January day as I realised that Gun Wharf Keys was formerly Shore Establishment HMS Vernon back in the 1970s, (sadly closed down and built upon, I later ascertained, in 1995) The echo of the memory I was slowly recalling was because some 50 years ago I found myself sitting on the open bridge of a WW-II Minesweeper moored alongside HMS Vernon, undertaking the 3am watch, as a busy 24-hour a day naval harbour around me busied itself for the sailings due on the dawn tide..and at one point I had actually been looking across the water... at the very pub I was now sitting in..! It was probably called something different back then... but it was amazing to think that all those years on, here I was looking back in the opposite direction, recalling the ghost of HMS Vernon when, as a young naval cadet instructor, I was a temporary member of ship's company aboard the inshore mine-sweeper HMS Isis for a weekend of sea training..wishing back then that I could have popped into this very pub for a pint..! Safe to say the rest of our very enjoyable lunch in this fantastic old Inn, in a very historic part of Old Portsmouth, was a most happy journey down memory lane..allied to the fact the fish & chips were fantastic the cider spot on and the service & friendliness of the staff was most welcoming...and I think that a return trip to Spice Island is very much on... when the weather outside warms up a bit. So thank you for a smashing welcome, a delightful lunch and the rekindling for me of some happy Pompey memories from 50 years ago..😎
