The Jolly Sailor in Portsmouth

I really enjoyed celebrating Christmas in this pub. Great live music. I would like to highlight the hotel rooms separately. They are very bright and clean, there is everything you need for a wonderful holiday. Also, the location of the establishment itself is very good. Nearby is the sea, the embankment and parks, various entertainment and shopping. I recommend.

I had a lovely stay in the rooms above the pub, which had a charming vintage vibe. My en suite room was cozy and well-equipped, with tea and coffee facilities and an electric kettle. The room and the laundry were clean and smelled amazing, which was a pleasant surprise. The key box system for accessing the room was a very modern and convenient solution, though finding the entrance for the first time was a bit confusing as there’s no reception. There’s also a communal kitchen with a fridge, which was great for preparing and storing meals. The highlight was the stunning beach view from our window—so relaxing! I also had a chance to meet some staff members, and they were incredibly helpful and kind. While no food was included, the location is perfect—just a short walk to Palmerston Road, where you can find a wide variety of restaurants. Overall, it was a great experience!

Our company is proud to provide opportunities for Ukrainian refugees who fled the war, helping them feel useful and welcome while they’re here in the safety of the UK. Recently, we took them to The Jolly Saylor Christmas party, and it was truly a wonderful experience. The manager went above and beyond to ensure everyone felt happy and could momentarily forget their troubles. The food was fantastic, the atmosphere warm and inviting, and the band was absolutely amazing. It was a memorable evening for all of us, and we’re so grateful to The Jolly Saylor team for making it extra special. We’ll definitely be returning. Thank you for your kindness and hospitality!

We stayed for new years in the Jill Sailor inn. Very cosy and clean, Aushra&Igor are doing a great job in keeping the inn clean and it was a wonderful experience overall. Thank you

Great location, Christmas meal was nice but the toilets are absolutely disgusting. I complained early in the evening and they just got worse and worse. There is no excuse for sanitary bins with no lids and broken toilet seats. The smell of the sanitary bins was awful and everyone I crossed on the stairs down to them was horrified by the state of them, which is a massive shame as the pub and location are lovely.

Visited for a couple of drinks on the way to Canoe lake. Nice and comfortable well kept too

I emailed JS on Monday with our complaint and have had no response. I am sad to say that I am writing to complain about the service and the food we received on Saturday the 14th. I did ask a member of staff if I could speak to the manager about these issues that night but they didn't come out to see me. Before I begin I would like to say that I have attended 2 Xmas party events here previously with no complaints, although they were quite a few years ago and maybe under different management so had suggested the Jolly Sailor for our works do for this reason. Unfortunately we were all greatly disappointed and feel completely robbed. We paid £449.35 for what I can only describe as appalling food and a very slow service. We were informed through email to arrive before 7pm as that is when the food service would start. But we didn't receive our starters until 8.10. Only 4 people had starters and had the service begun at the time we were told the rest of us wouldn't have had to wait almost 2 hours for the main dishes which started to arrive 8.50pm. By this time we were all extremely hungry but how disappointing when we find that every dish was luke warm, the beef was stringy and visibly unappetising, the potatoes were rubbery, the cauliflower was undercooked, the Yorkshire puddings was flat , the stuffing was dry and hard and everyone only had 1 sprout and 1 pigs in blanket. The turkey was like processed meat and very thin slices. The desserts were equally as bad. The chocolate brownies were hard , I have a video of my friend trying to get her spoon through it. I ordered the apple crumble which arrived drenched in cold custard. I left it uneaten.

Awful food was there for an Xmas do, had the veggie option the food was cold, the cauliflower and broccoli were hard and under cooked the Yorkshire pudding was flat. The dessert was a brownie this was hard and inedible use

Went for Christmas dinner / party night. Roast was not good, flat yorkshires, potatoes not crispy at all, turkey was cold and very thinly sliced, looked like pre sliced warmed in gravy, whole thing was like a bad school dinner. Band were very good for entertainment. Drinks super expensive £7 a pint!

Was here on a work night out. Good food, service was a little slow and timing for bringing food out needs improving. A tip is work the table first not going by meats that way you don't have half the table waiting for food for 10 mins while the other half of the same table has not only got there food but nearly finished. That was a let down and a big put off with professionalism there for me. Great location, if just want to go there for a drink that's the better option, as I said shame as food was great but execution of table standards not good.

We was served very quickly and as we pre booked the table it was ready and clean as soon as we wanted. We are looking to book again and have our Christmas meal.

Have a Saturday party, Very good location with pay parking around. Comfortable place with warm service.

Cozy pub by the sea, mark was a very good waiter for us

So I have been on the hunt for a good roast in Portsmouth, and I have to say this roast was tasty, even more tasty than expensive restaurant's roasts I've tried in Portsmouth. It is 2 for 1, not only on roasts, but other meal options too. And the kid got to eat for free, a whole 3 course kids meal free. Roast was delicious - soft melt in your mouth potatoes, chicken breast that was not dry and good selection of veggies, yorkshire was also good. Tasty gravy. I am happy. Will be going here for roasts

We called in at 9.30 pm and told the place was closing even though the place had about 49 people in!

My partner and I went in on Saturday 20th July to escape the busy food festival happening in southsea . There was one miserable looking women serving so took quite a while to get served. A few draught beers including Guinness wasn’t available so opted for Neck Oil didn’t realise it was £7.20 a pint !! I thought it was a bit steep ! As it had started raining we decided to get another drink no one serving at all at the bar , people were waiting , another couple left and so did we .

Great pub always has been, tend to get some good bands in here too and a good selection of beers and ales and generally a good vibe here.

Only 1 person serving behind the bar, other staff members too busy in conversation. After 20 mins of queuing to order a drink gave up and left

Bar staff struggling to serve the number of customers as they had to go down stairs for draft beers. The staff are clearly stressed as cannot deliver with the issues today. However, the staff are friendly and jovial despite their challenges. Don’t think toilets have been updated for a while. However, it is lovely sat here on a warm May evening looking over Southsea common.

Great evening with a fantastic band

Good location (good to stay outside if the weather is fine) and have the sea view (the coast is not very far away). The afternoon i visited there was a live musical performance. The only issue to me is that i found the price is little bit higher than the others. But if you enjoy live music then it should be a big bargain.

I went here with my three children to buy for drinks. I went to the loo first and when I came back the owner questioned me if these were my children and that they were not allowed to finish their ice lollies inside the premises as they sell their own food! I said they only came inside because it was cold outside but the guy said it was 'my pub, my rules'. I never met such as a'hole as this! I went there to buy drinks, but went to Langtry's instead. Will never go to jolly sailor ever again. The man even made my five year cry and didn't understand why we were kicked out even before having a chance to buy a drink. British hospitality at its best!

Probly the cheapest place in portsmouth to stay rooms are outdated but ok of your on a budget and its in a good location food is decent toilets and tables not the best 3 stars entertainment at night is decent too

I had not been to this place in some time after relocating however I had fond memories and the food had been enjoyable previously. I’d not seen a friend in some time and I recommended we returned to Portsmouth and had a Roast together at this place. Can’t fault the fantastic staff but the food was a massive let down - you do get a load of food a huge amount but the meat was sadly awful chewy and horrible to taste ( we had the Beef) they sadly decided to completely drown the entire meal in a really overpowering salty gravy - it sounded like a great deal 2 for £20 but I went away starving. The staff didn’t return to check how everything was I do know the staff were very busy by that point but I felt so upset and embarrassed as I’d suggested going there based on my previous experience. I think buy better cuts of meat and put the gravy in a side jug not everyone wants gravy on everything and reduce the massive portions. Don’t like giving negative feedback but it was disappointing enough to make me feel I needed too. Staff and location are excellent shame the food standard has slipped or maybe we just got unlucky.

A very nice chicken roast dinner and Sunday afternoon entertainment (Elvis impersonater ) great atmosphere. (Wise to pre book) i did not pre book but bar staff allowed me to eat at the bar.would definitely visit again.many thanks to everyone.

It's a pub. Quiz on a Wednesday night. Welcoming too. A lot of steps mind you and a tricky revolving door. Not one for anyone with mobility difficulties! The team that run it are really helpful though and although it's not busy they are always willing to help me carry drinks downstairs

Came here for drinks on a Saturday night whilst away with friends. There was a DJ. Great night dancing. Came back the next day for Sunday lunch. Which was amazing

Had the sunday roast here..2 4 1 so couldn't complain...

We popped in for a quick drink, service very friendly. Whilst there, a customer started bullying one of the bar staff as they didn’t accept cash. Older male customer was horrendous, I only caught end of his rant, but the member of bar staff was very professional and well mannered, a credit to the job. Members of staff should not have to accept this level of customer harassment, and the male should feel totally ashamed of himself.

Due to the fact I've been going to this pub for years with family and friends AND ABOVE ALL THEY ARE A INDEPENDANT FAMILY RUN BUSINESS which we should all be supporting I decided to do the right thing and give them a good chance to make this right infact 6 weeks to return my emails which they never did , ITS LIKE THEY JUST DONT CARE *just read there recent feedbacks* no response nothing you have just lost 4 regular customers (and 2 families that eat there most sundays),you no longer except cash which if you think about it you lose a market where people may not want other people knowing what they are spending when they go out just please think about that not to mention some people like to pay cash so they know what they are spending (especially in this climate),also you took a card payment and over charged us twice (which I'm now thinking this is why you no longer take cash) real shame as this used to be a great pub you've just got really lazy,however on the plus there are alot of independent pubs in southsea who are just so much better unfortunately this pub is no longer one of them (I will never support a pub who does not except cash) or one that rips there customers off and certainly not one that doesn't even respond to emails

Played the quiz was really good. However, a member of staff (thin woman, brown hair in charge of the quiz) openly bullies and belittles the other members of the bar team and is really hostile when approached for any questions, queries or general chat. Made for a very awkward situation, wouldn’t want to work here in that environment let alone see it, feel bad for members of staff under her.

I was hovering between average and very good for my review. I felt average was too low as I really enjoyed the vegetable Thai curry that was given at half time during the quiz. The entry free is £3 per person which is quite a lot but I felt it was worth it as you did get a decent portion and it was delicious and hot. The quiz was fun although perhaps a little slow for my liking and it didn't have a music round, I go to quite a few quizzes though so perhaps I'm being a bit picky. The drinks were expensive but possibly that's to be expected given the location close to the sea. The thing that really let the evening down though was how cold it was. We were all freezing and had to keep our coats on all night. I know times are hard and heating is a luxury these days but perhaps staff could hand out rugs or hot water bottles! I would like to visit again and try a meal but I'd probably wait until spring or summer.

A family group of 28 had just completed the Cancer Research’s Race for Life in Southsea and we needed a venue to celebrate and reminisce. Many thanks to Ross and his team (Rachel, Emily and Jamie plus chefs) for providing a great space for such a large and diverse group with superb service and really good food. Thank you SO much. We WILL be back - warn Rachel!!

Was ok for a 1-2 night stay. Tbh I would actually rate it 2.5 Basic and with shared facilities (would not usually go for shared bathroom but it was a cheap option) Unfortunately no lock on one bathroom door which resulted in us walking in on a man asleep on toilet. Don’t stay here at weekend if you want peace and quiet as entertainment on in the pub. Sean literally did sing Elvis all night. It was adequate for our needs but nothing special and definitely needs some redecoration.

We stayed for 1 night and found the receptionist very helpful, she even offered to carry bags (we did not take up her offer but really felt pleased to have been asked). The room was clean and tidy, plenty of tea and coffee available. As we were going to music festival opposite this was an ideal place to stay as currently I cannot walk very well. Thank you Jolly Sailor as we even had a sea view room x

Stayed at The Jolly Sailor for a few nights in August (review on the Jolly Sailor 'hotel' tripadvisor page) and naturally we frequented the bar most nights. One night we had food, Beer & Burger for £10 was excellent value; the portions were generous and the burger cooked fresh and possibly homemade. Another night we stayed for the 90s disco and had a very good evening; entertainment was spot on, lots of classics played, plenty of people up dancing, great atmosphere. Would definitely visit TJS again when in the area!

We ate here twice and on both occasions the meal was very good. A good portion and quite tasty. The pub has seen better days and needed a bit of a shake up. We ate early and the staff coped very well with table only service at the time. Toilets were also a bit on the needed a good clean side of things bit then again they did there job. Good location and had seating outside but next to the road. Not everyone's cup of tea but a good English pub.

Service was horrible the band was good but waiting 45 mins minimum for drinks despite asking at least 5 times to different staff, manager didn’t care at all , woman server rude, two men serving rude we literally just wanted to order more drinks. Completely boo go somewhere else

Some of the best food we have ever had, such good quality and plenty of it! Also had a 241 deal in which was great! Lovely waitress and fab service!

We visited this pub today for Sunday lunch. What a great experience. We booked a table which was available when we arrived slightly earlier than planned. The staff were extremely pleasant and the management of social distancing was very comfortable. Now for the food. We have had many Sunday roasts over the years but this was up there with the best. The servings were of a very good size and every item on the plate was cooked well and served hot. It was simply superb and excellent value for money. I would thoroughly recommend this pub.

Very good food at a good price there was 5 adults and we had the summer menu which was £12 each for a main meal and a pint or glass of wine , food was very hot and plenty of it and good presentation staff very friendly and helpful would highly recommend and will be going back

This is a staple for a family friendly Sunday roast - great choice and big portions. Kids menu is fab too.

Nice to stop in for some lunch or even a later afternoon drink and nibbles. the staff are attentive and the service friendly

After a long drive we hoped to find somewhere near our hotel to rest up with a drink in the sunshine. Social distancing was observed by taking details and instructions given. Food looked amazing, plentiful, but sadly we were not looking for food at this stage. Nice place to stop off near seafront and gardens.

We planned to eat at this pub especially as it advertised 2 for 1 throughout February on its website but when we got there around 7pm on Wednesday this week, it was shut.

This is a big pub which had a nice warm welcome but was very quiet (mid week). It was nice inside and I suspect it would be good when music is on, it's well laid out for that.

Fui anoche al día de San Valentín con mi esposa Gabrielle, su hermana Sabrina y mi esposo Ted. Primero la cerveza. Mi pinta de Doom Bar estaba agria y dejé la mitad. Me cambié a Guinness y me cobraron 10. 05 por la pinta y media de sidra. ¡Cuidé mi bebida muy cara durante las siguientes tres horas! En segundo lugar la comida. Si esto hubiera sido Come Dine With Me habría marcado 3 de diez y dos puntos hubieran sido para el budín. Gabrielle tenía salmón en croute. Ella dijo que el salmón estaba bueno, pero dejó el pastel ya que estaba empapado. Su espárrago recocido tenía los tallos duros todavía unidos. El resto de nosotros tenía las chuletas de cordero recubiertas que resultaron ser pequeñas costillas de cordero. Como es la tendencia moderna, los habían cocinado agitándolos cerca de una vela durante un par de minutos. Después de atravesar una capa muy gruesa de grasa poco cocida, llegamos a una pepita de carne rosa brillante. La carne era difícil de cortar, masticable y carecía de sabor. El syllabub fue bueno. En tercer lugar la clientela. La última vez que vi tanto cordero vestido como cordero fue en un mercado de granjeros. Si bailar fuera un piano, ¡necesitaría una gran afinación! Chav Paradise.Finalmente la gracia salvadora fue "Sean canta a Elvis". Tenía una buena voz y no "sobrepasó a Elvis" sus canciones como lo hacen muchos imitadores. Fue un buen acto y es recomendable.

Asi que. Fuimos a una boda, no fue la mejor. Mientras esperábamos, comimos. Demasiado caro para lo que obtienes realmente. No ayudaron con la decoración, así que tuvimos que hacer eso también. El ambiente estaba muerto y era muy pequeño y lleno de gente. No fue limpiado de la noche anterior. Lo bueno fue que el personal era encantador. Pero no iré allí pronto

I booked a table a couple of weeks ago for their 80's disco evening and to have a meal.I arrived 15 min before my table booking table and had to wait 5 mins at the bar to ask where my table was, nothing was ready. I had to ask bar maid a couple of times if table was ready and after 30 minutes of waiting they sat us down, they didn't seem too bothered that we had wait and not very friendly.Ordered food, which was nice. Then noticed that we should have received 2 free drinks with fish and chips that we ordered. Went back to bar and they only gave us one.DJ was really good and played some great music, which was the only reason we stayed.I wouldn't rush to go back there, the staff aren't very friendly and they didn't seem to be organised.

When we arrived the place was empty but for 2 people. We asked if they serve food & they did. No tables were set up but we could sit anywhere, we were asked if we were staying for the quiz? We declined, the food when it came was ok just ordinary pub food but the server was lovely very chatty & welcoming had good banter. The place started to fill up for the quiz & we had a nice chat with a couple of the teams. Very friendly we would go back.

Stayed here October 2019, room was very basic, bedding and towels were clean. Shared shower room and toilet (shower gel not provided but it can be bough on site). Shower holder was falling apart but shower temperature and pressure was good. We booked a table in the restaurant the day before staying, however an hour after they called to say no chef on the night we were staying so no meals. In fact the bar was closed when we returned at 8.30pm too.

First the good point....the jolly sailor has secured the services of one of the best soul and Motown DJs in the land (Tricky Dicky). Never heard of him before but a great listening experience and first time I have danced for years.Now the bad.....the food was nothing short of horrible and the service dreadful.After a thirty minute wait all three meals were cold.The ribs which were not only cold but covered with greasy slime pretending to be barbecue sauce ( the last I heard, sauce moves around the plate), sweet potato chips that got colder as one moved down the pile, burger buns that were drier that the Sahara and having gently reported the unsatisfactory state of affairs to the waitress received a cursory “ok I’ll tell the kitchen” and then heard nothing more.I think the worst thing was that our complaint was just totally ignored even though pretty well full plates were returned to the kitchenA very poor advertisement for Portsmouth

Good location, clean bed clothes. That's the good news. Reception was a table in the bar, the customer entrance was through a door at the side of the pub. It had seen better days. Looked like it had a sheet of tin fixed to it. Once in side 51 steps to our room. See first two lists if steps in the Main Customer entrance. Information on signing in. This is your room, that is the shared bathroom. The room was devoid of any character, no mirror, one fluorescent tube and one bedside lamp without shade. Mattress that was probably older than me, badly stained carpet, dirty marks on wall, hole in door, paint had peeled from the window. Bed rocked as you got onto it. On leaving we had to put keys in a box. There appeared to be no way of entering the pub to complain about the room.

Awful, awful place. Where do you start? Maybe with the stench of damp, or maybe with the staff that are SO rude. Definitely not jolly and certainly don't have any customer service training, the only thing left would be for them to tell you to sod off after they've snatched the money out of your hands. And yeah it's badly overpriced too

Spent last night at the Jolly sailor had a brilliant time and stayed till close! The live band was brilliant and the atmosphere inside was fun and friendly

Was meeting a group of friends over the weekend. Staff very friendly, also nice food and my room was lovely. Comfy bed and sea view was nice. Only gripe was that the shower water temperature continuously switched from hot to cold. But I would definitely stay there again!

My husband and I went to the Jolly Sailor for lunch today as we were visiting Portsmouth. The Jolly Sailor was really clean and a really nice atmosphere. The way the pub/ restaurant is set up is really good as the food part isn’t close to the bar so you can enjoy your food without people climbing over you to get to the bar.

Acabo de pasar una semana trabajando y me alojé en el Jolly Sailor, muy cerca del paseo marítimo y de la calle Southsea, un gran pub debajo, buena comida y un anfitrión acogedor. La habitación 11 en la parte superior era agradable, cómoda cama, el baño compartido era agradable y limpio, toallas limpias durante la estancia ya un precio razonable también teniendo en cuenta la época del año. Tv y cafetera en la habitación también. Una buena base para explorar el área y simplemente bajar la cabeza al final del día.

Estuvimos cerca durante la celebración del día D - 75, así que comimos un par de veces en el hermoso clima del porche / patio. Tenía una buena cerveza y sidra y pescado / patatas fritas y hamburguesas decentes. Los camareros fueron muy útiles para nosotros los novatos de pub de América.

Mi compañero se hospedó en el Jolly Sailor porque al ser el fin de semana del día 75, no pudimos encontrar otro hotel con una vacante.

A pesar de que parecía un poco descarado desde el exterior, descubrimos que tenía un ambiente agradable en el interior con lugareños y visitantes mezclándose, una bonita terraza frente al parque y frente al mar, teníamos pescado y papas fritas que estaban muy calientes y bien presentados y muy buena relación calidad-precio.

Popped in for a drink after a meal The pub smells of old fat and the toilets have toilet roll all over the floor and unclean. Sorry not worth complaining just won’t come back

Came to see an excellent band and to eat. Three of us ordered burgers at £12 each which bore no resemblance to what they offer on their website. No salad or coleslaw accompaniments as stated on the menu - unless you count half an unripe tomato as "salad". No of us could identify the provenance of our buns, which were certainly not the brioche portrayed on their website photography. Burnt on the outside and uncooked on the inside. The only saving grace was the burger itself, which was coarse and tasty.

Can not advise you enough to not visit this establishment!!!!

Nice Sunday lunch, not worth the full price but worth 2 for 1, which you have to book as if you just turn up you pay full price. Better value for money lunches out there.Our table was dirty and condiments dirty. Need someone to just walk round and check. Toilet area was very cold. Overall we would try again to see if improved.

Popped in for an early dinner during a busy week and what a treat. Friendly barman (maybe manger) ordered a lovely Shiraz and husband ordered an Italian lager (reasonable choice I am informed). Good choice on the menu - not too big not too small - we both opted for the fillet steak and we informed that throughout November it was ‘2 for 1’ what a wonderful surprise and what a lovely meal. Best meal we’ve eaten in Southsea for ages (we are local and eat out at least once a week). We will return. 2 large wines, 2 beers, 2 fillet steaks and trimmings circa 42 quid. Jolly Sailor - jolly us.

In my youth used to visit regularly when lived locally with local boyfriend. First impressions would say seen better times. Poorly staffed and rather seedy .

Un montón de opciones para elegir fuera del menú, bastante variado, debería decir. Mis colegas y yo fuimos a almorzar hoy y hemos recibido una gran variedad de pedidos de comida para los 8 de nosotros. Estoy feliz con mi parrilla mixta con gruesas rebanadas de carne mixta y papas fritas. No hay nada malo con mi comida, la porción es hige que he tenido que pedir una bolsa para perros ya que no puedo terminar mi comida. Sin embargo, la hamburguesa no era buena. Recibí un poco de mi colega a quien no le gustaba el sabor de la carne. La empanada de carne no tenía un sabor fresco, y no me gustaba la textura, pero la probé, la comía pero no la volvía a ordenar.

Being here twice now....each time was good atmosphere and very friendly staff...keep it up.Definitely go again next time I come down from London.

Took advantage of the book in advance 241 offer on Sunday meals. We all had Sunday roasts which were really good value. Big portion size and tasted great. Only downside was no crackling on the belly pork which was a bit disappointing, therefore would recommend the roast chicken instead. Thank you for a lovely afternoon- we plan to come back to try the sharing plates.

I found myself at the Jolly Sailor on a Saturday where I was attending a private function. The location of the place is great - (fairly) easy to park (and not too expensive in the grand scheme of parking charges) and has 2 levels of seating (not sure how a disabled person would get on though as I only saw steps for entry into the place but I could have missed a ramp)
