This a very nice village pub, they even talk to strangers here! There is a small selection of real ales. We went for dinner, the wife's Lamb chops were incredible and I went for the Cumberland sausage, food and several drinks came to £55. The service was friendly and attentive. So good we're going back for Sunday lunch.

I ordered a Sunday lunch with the beef. It was delicious and very quick coming out. Would definitely recommend. The reason why it’s not five stars was that there was like an army of flies on the inside. You wouldn’t believe me unless you saw them. Luckily we were sat outside though so it didn’t bother me until I got my drinks.

Just had two fantastic home made roast lamb dinners, followed by sticky toffee pudding with custard. A proper local country pub with a great atmosphere. Highly recommended.

Described as vegetarian friendly however only one option which was vegetable lasagne. When this arrived it was a bowl of rice and a little veg which had been under the grill for a lengthy time. We returned this asking where the pasta was and the food that was then given was 2 sheets of pasta and some sauce. Also had an option of chips or potatoes for some meals and when potatoes were asked for staff said there was none but potatoes were given with other meals. Strange atmosphere and felt pressured to leave even though it was only about 8.30. However most of the food was nice.

Would highly recommend a visit to this pub. The food was amazing good portion size very fresh and all home made. Great value for money

Lovely, characterful pub. We had dinner here on the recommendation of Travelodge staff. Food was home made and delicious. Steak and ale pie recommended. Staff were super friendly and helpful. Outstanding value for money. We will be back if passing this way again.

We had a meal last Wednesday at The Kings Arms and our meals were excellent. Not only was the food gorgeous, it as all served in a lovely pub full of character and by really friendly staff. If we are passing this way again, we will definitely call into The Kings Arms.

Found this place by chance and how glad we were. It was a warm sunny day so we sat outside and had a lovely lunch - my prawn cocktail great and my husband had ham, egg and chips also great - the ham had obviously been home cooked and was carved to perfection - the lovely lady who was serving us even brought us beer mats to put over our wine glasses so the flies could not have a drink! We were on our way up North on holiday but will certainly return if we are ever going that way again.

A great find not far from Penrith with lovely country pub atmosphere. I visited with a walking group so quite a big party of 9 but we weren't squeezed in and both food., staff and ales were excellent. Home pies were amazing as where steaks and Cumberland sausage. We were a bit late which was entirely our fault but the managed to serve us all quickly and cheerfully. We will be back

Food was all fresh, hearty and tasty. When we first arrived and saw the menu I assumed it would be boul in a bag/microwave food as the menus did look a little tacky (sorry). However the food was outstanding and all 5 of us loved our meals. Definitely would recommend for a meal

Booked in for 18 as this was perfectly placed 5 mins from M6 and we had family from Glasgow and manchester. The food was excellent, great value for money and the staff were amazing looking after us all from 7 to76 year olds. Definatley be back thank you

We had a great lunch in this lovely Lakeland pub. It was so nice to experience the traditional atmosphere and warm welcome. The OAP menu was excellent value. The staff were friendly, the food was very enjoyable and we are looking forward to returning soon.

Went for Sunday lunch, which was pretty average. Meat was gristly and much of the food seemed rather tasteless The table was also rather cramped and I kept being nudged every time someone walked behind me.

As a large family group returning from Centre Parcs, we called into here for lunch and what a absolutely great find. A lovely warm welcome, very accommodating, nothing was too much trouble and the food was amazing. Such lovely hosts and food made this the perfect end to our family break. One of two places to eat in Stainton village: namely this village pub and the Brantwood hotel a few metres up the road. We have eaten several times at both and while the hotel has an upmarket feel to it, the pub (imho) provides better value for money. Doombar ale is the regular beer on draught, which is an unremarkable ale, but the additional guest ale is currently Corby Gold and a quaffable session ale it is too, coming from a local brewery near Carlisle. The staff are all friendly with a lovely lady called Theresa managing things professionally out front, worthy of a mention. The food menu is pretty standard pub fayre (nothing wrong with that) with specials available. The 'pie of the Day' was steak when we last called and while my portion wasn't brimming with beef, the man on the next table to me seemed to be a bit luckier with his bit. I have heard good reports on the chicken and leek pie but it was not available on our night or I would have chosen that. The scampi was great and an agreeable portion. The chips were homemade and there was a selection of three or four vegetables on the side. I would grade the portions as 'ample'. We love it when they light the fire inside, but it was unlit on this last occasion and we suspect it was because the tables closest to the fire get too hot and it was as a busy evening.

Called in at lunchtime when staying nearby. We each had a starter fish cakes for me and mozzarella sticks for my wife, lovely with lots of fresh salad and sauce. Ordered steak and ale pie and she had salt and pepper chicken. Absolutely lovely, freshly prepared delicious home cooked food. Generous portions and good value, couldn't fault it and will return.

If your looking for a warm welcome, a decent pint (or glass of wine) and a heart pub meal then this is the place for you. Portions are on the generous side which is always a bonus when the food is so good 👍

Popped in on Christmas Day lunchtime while staying in Stainton over Christmas and having just made an early morning run up High Street. Really warmly welcomed, with the first beer on the house and a tasty selection of snacks. What a great friendly local pub....

Came across the pub on the drive back from Lowther Castle and what a find. Staff were wonderfully friendly, the service was very efficient and the food was to die for... Real home cooked comfort food. We found a real gem of a place for lunch!

Solíamos vivir en Temple Sowerby y este era uno de nuestros pubs favoritos para el almuerzo. Aunque tienen muchos platos en el menú, los pasteles de carne son tan buenos que nunca probamos nada más.Desde que nos mudamos a Chipre hace 4 años, no hemos podido visitarlo, pero hace unas semanas, estaba escoltando a mi madre de regreso a casa en Newcastle y durante los pocos días que estuve en el Reino Unido, fui a Cumbria con mi Mamá y junto con mi hija que aún vive en Cumbria, visitamos Kings Arms.Mamá tenía pastel de pollo, mientras que Vikki y yo comimos bistec. Todo lo que puedo decir es que valió la pena el viaje y que los pasteles fueron tan buenos como recuerdo, de hecho, también pedí dos trozos de pastel que podría llevar a casa a Chipre para que mi esposa también pudiera tener algunos. Tres días y 3500 km después, ese pastel aún estaba delicioso.Gracias chicos y mucho tiempo que sus pasteles continúen (hay otros platos disponibles, pero recomiendo los pasteles)

We came across this little village pub on the way back to our accommodation after a long day of walking. We were greeted with a friendly smile and two menus despite not booking and even though I think they were just about to close the kitchen! The food was amazing and unfortunately the portions were so huge that we didn't have space for pudding - a real shame as I reckon it would have been really yummy. Just what we needed! If we're ever back in the area, we will definitely drop in for another visit.

We booked a table for 3 by email and were assured it was OK. When we arrived they did not have the booking. One girl tried to find us a table but the other 2 couldn't have cared less. Nobody told us whether they could find us a table or not, they just stood and looked at us. Eventually I said 'so you haven't got a table for us' and they just said 'No'. No apologies or anything. I won't be back.

We followed the signs from the A66 to find this pub. The staff were very friendly and found us table even though they were busy.The lamb Sunday lunch was delicious. We also enjoyed the berry crumble for dessert.

Four of us coming back from a long day out decided to have a bite to eat and came across The Kings Arms, We were seated straight away and given menu's, 2 ordered Steak n Ale Pie with veg and Chips, 1 ordered Chicken, bacon and leek (?) with chips and veg and 1 ordered Cumberland sausage with veg and mash, wasn't waiting long before meals were bought out and all I can say was WOW, huge portions and homemade delicious good food and very reasonably priced for what was served. Highly recommend coming here when you want a hearty meal. Staff are lovely and friendly, nothing too much trouble and we will return next time we are in Penrith.

Warm welcome from landlord. Food very good. OAP menu 2 courses £9.95. Mixed grill, chicken curry and ham, egg and chips generous portions. Lemon cheesecake, mixed berry crumble and sorbet delicious. Would highly recommend this place.

found this little pub near where we were staying and it was definitely a gem! Excellent food, large portions and service was excellent too. Definitely worth a visit if you are in the area, very reasonably priced too. Only piece of feedback, we discovered after we had eaten, that you could get half portions and some of our table would have preferred that so maybe be a good idea to advertise it, we didn't see it anywhere. That said, it was excellent! Well done, if in the area, would definitely be back

We called in one evening after seeing other reviews. The pub was reasonably quiet and we got a table easily. The food was fantastic, plentiful, tasty and obviously home cooked. I had the chicken pie which contained masses of chicken in a tasty sauce my husband had the gammon egg and chips and then lemon cheesecake which he thoroughly enjoyed, I had ice cream which was lovely too.

Having found this little quaint pub not far from where we were staying. We didn’t go anywhere else!! Massive portions, lovely homemade food, friendly and welcoming. Definitely recommend.
