The King and Miller in Bassetlaw

There was 16 of us came to celebrate my daughters 18th birthday. All the meals was cooked perfectly the meals came out very quickly. 100% the the cook and the staff.

The website suggests that breakfast is served till noon so when we pulled up at 11.15am and noticed they were still closed was confusing, but we waited regardless till they opened at 11.30am as we were starving. It's been a while since I've visited King and Miller myself, and I used to rate the place quite highly. However, despite the refurb it had years ago - it seems to be doing with another one sometime in the near future. The place hadn't been cleaned from the previous night it would appear with under the tables not being cleaned, coins still on the sides and the tables near the arcade machine. The tables were sticky too and despite one of the reviews on here stating that the table salt and pepper pots were blocked, wet and messy and they got a response stating that sachets would be used as a replacement so that this wouldn't happen again - as you can see this hasn't been implemented. £18 for a bog-standard breakfast, where Heinz beans were apparently used as advertised but unfortunately this wasn't the case and you can tell they're not branded. The bacon was obviously done on an unclean grill, however, the egg was free-range and the hash brown bites were a good shout. The orange juice I had tasted like the carton had been left out in the warmth and then refrigerated also - my partner agreed with me and neither could finish it. The money spent should go to the staff who seemed friendly and helpful enough, but the food just wasn't up the standard, nor was the decor and cleanliness. I don't think we shall be returning unless there was some form of deep clean/refurb.

Second time we have come here. The first was great which is why we returned. Definitely will not come a third time. Ordered the chicken which came black and was very dry with tender stem broccoli that came like elastic bands. Tried to salt the veggies and tried 4 different salt shakers from different tables. Looked inside and they are so clogged up, nothing can come out. The inside is rusty and the salt wet and disgusting. Told a member of staff to be told that's all they have, she didn't care one bit. If they're not keeping the salt fresh and cleaning the shakers I dread to think what they're not cleaning in the kitchen. Absolutely vile. Left my food and walk out never to return.

went for lunch for my dads 82nd birthday. food was lovely, hot, nicely presented and the nicest meal out ive had for a while. staff were polite and friendly. will be back definately

Was really looking forward to a sirloin steak sizzling wife ordered salmon steak was raw I asked for well done she took it back an brought same steak back overcooked and 2 d time mushroom was burnt this steak was supposed to be sirloin so told manager didn't want it and just paid for drink wife got a salmon was microwaved and dried up 2nd time came back like an old shoe why is it that they think its ok to even serve such chap we eat out for 20 years and to be honest it is getting worse to fi d a decent chef that can cook a decent meal no wonder they don't last food is very important and a good chef is worth his weight in gold but these managers think it's alright to put any to. Booked for tea on 20th ordered sharer starters which were disappointing then for mains we ordered 2 signature sizzling skillet meals described as served on a sizzling skillet only to be served this on a normal plate and Luke warm food had we been told they would not be on a sizzling skillet we would have chosen something different so overall very disappointed .with our visit .

My wife and I visited for my birthday, we were pleasantly welcomed and shown to our table with a smile by the lovely Sophie. I had a classic mixed grill which was the best I had eaten in here my wife had the gammon which was also very nice, all in all a very pleasant evening apart from the British weather lol.

Went for a meal yesterday with wife and father-in-law. Had to book a table beforehand as I use a power wheelchair, arrived half an early and was politely if we could sit outside, due to social distancing in place (arrive just before time if you don't want to wait) was shown to our table I had plenty of space at the table. Only problem i did have was the entrance is raised about a couple of inches, making it hard to get over with a power wheelchair, told the they needed a threshold ramp. Meal came in reasonable time and was fresh and piping hot, had plenty of time and was not rushed. A thurally enjoyable meal.

we was greeted at the door with a short blonde women who told us very bluntly the rules and just said follow me and then got to a table and she said this is your table bluntly and walked away . there was none of the waitresses wearing masks and and all the tables where in use no spacing at all . the waitress came plonked knife and fork down and wee made the order . it arrived and just put in on the table with out any politeness . i felt total at risk people walking round and and when one customer left there was no disinfectant used to clean the table etc. disgusting service and will never eat there again .

Have been using this venue for a number of years and never had a bad meal yet. Just been for the first time since lockdown and although limited menu it was excellent. Well done king and miller see you again next week.10 out of 10

Me and my partner called here the evening of 13th march, the pub itself was fairly busy but not rammed, we chose this pub as it was one of a handful in 10miles that accepted a gift voucher we were given. Inside its light and airey and tastefully decorated, we found a table and read the menu, there is a large selection on the menu, we ordered at the bar I was served by on occasion by 2 different members of staff both happy and friendly, I ordered a burger with chesse, bacon and chips, our lass had a chicken dinner with crispy buttermilk chickenFood arrived 20mins later, on crockery 3 times the size needed, portions arnt the biggest average at best, my burger meal lacked presentation, no side salad etc, I eventually found the salad it was coming with on the bottom of the burger 2 bits of mini lettuce 1 bit of tomato and onion, the burger themselves were just cheap like you get went you buy 10 for 2quid from the freezer in the supermarket the chips it came with were much of the same,Our lasses chicken dinner the crispy buttermilk chicken, looked and tastes like breaded chicken the mash tasted like smash, stuffing was packet, same with the yorky pud,Overall clean and tidy, with friendly staff, beer wasn't bad priced, food is just cheap nothing esensialy wrong with it just cheap packet stuff no cooking just warming stuff up

Stopped for a meal. Service was fine. My wife’s steak was over cooked but edible.I had the haddock, well not really. It was a minuscule portion cooked to within an inch of its life and covered with an inch of batter. I reported the meal on the way out and didn’t receive any apologies. I won’t eat there ever again.

How hard is it to drop frozen battered mushrooms and frozen halloumi fries into a deep fat fryer and take out when ready??? Oh how I wish now that I had taken a photo. The mushrooms, all 5 of them, were like rocks and were served on a place with one piece of lettuce. Halloumi fries were as thin as McDonalds fries Main courses were no better. Scampi was that well cooked that it almost bounced off my plate when I tried to cut into it, steak pie was overcooked, couldn’t even cut the pastry with a knife, presentation was non existent and even the chips were nasty.I may as well just have stayed at home and raided my own freezer because the only think not cooked from frozen on our plates was the lettuce!!!!How they can serve food at this standard is beyond me.

Great value for money. Steaks were lovely ! Staff are great ! Glad it’s on our doorstep. Shame we can’t take our doggy with us though ,,,,,,my only gripe. Thanks guys See you again soon. Websters

I rung up 3 weeks to book a table for my little girls 4 th birthday as they was 10 off us and so close to Xmas to be told to just turn up it would be fine at 5 when we got there it was so busy and a 45 min wait so as we had 2 young children we couldn’t wait that long was not happy as we found it hard to get in any were elese if only they let us book as a regular customer I was so disappointed

Call here every December when we come to see a show in Retford. Always book in advance as December, can't fault the food, ample portion served quickly and hot. Staff are friendly, nice clean rooms, what more can you ask

We always go out as a large family gathering end of November / beginning of December and this year decided to try the King and Miller. This booking was for 24 people.Easy to book, helpful and friendly staff, and the option to send in a pre order which made life easier.We arrived, and within 20 minutes the starters were out. The food was hot, tasty and portion sizes were good.The tables were cleared and 20 mins later the mains were out. Again warm, tasty and great portion sizes. Of all our meals, the only complaint was some of the boiled potatoes were hard, but that can be forgiven considering the size of our party and the number of other people also eating at the restaurant. It was the same story with deserts, all served hot and tasting great.The entire meal was priced really well, having chosen the £12.99 Christmas three course special.I can honestly find very little fault with either the food or the service. Thanks for a cracking meal and very friendly and attentive staff. It was a pleasure to eat at your restaurant and we will definitely return.

This is the second time we’re visited for dinner. The staff was very friendly and helpful. There was not long wait for the meal to be served. The meal arrived hot and served with a smile. Will definitely be back.

Excellent customer service and the steaks were amazing would highly recommend a visit on Wednesday will definitely visit again soon.

The quality of the food was unacceptable. The "additional" items were the size of golf balls. The curry was not spicy. The portion size was poor, Parking was a joke. We wont be going here again.

Called at ashley hotel worksop. Run out of steak again which is totally unacceptable. Called at king and miller retford absolutely brill service and food. Well done should have come here first , stuff the ashley

We normally eat here before going shopping but won't be calling again soon. I ordered the big breakfast my partner had fish and chips. When the meals arrived the lemon that was a garnish was discoloured brown the waiter swapped it with a tiny price of lemon I wouldn't have bothered personally. My big breakfast my fried eggs were raw and not cooked I asked for another one in its place and the beans looked has though they've been cooking all day. The man behind the bar that served us never smiled and seemed dither and the smell of him was not nice!! Should train the staff how to smile

We had booked a table which was lucky for us as the pub got really busy ,there was ONE member of staff looking after ALL the restaurant area,serving food and clearing tables.Oh sorry ! there was someone else wearing no badges but wearing a flamboyant Caribbean holiday shirt walking about but he did not help the ONE staff on the floor at any time during our time there.How did I know he was another member of staff ? Because I asked on the way out who he was and I was astonished to find out he was a trainee manager by the name of Damien. Being a past manager myself I could not believe how he blatantly ignored how busy the young man was and carried on doing nothing.How times have changed I thought managers lead by example, seems not anymore..

We had booked a table which was lucky for us as the pub was really busy ,there was one member of staff in uniform looking after ALL the restaurant area,serving food and clearing tables, as we were sat waiting for our meal another member of staff wearing what I will describe as a shirt you would wear on a Caribbean holiday, approach the uniformed member of staff and asked in front of everyone, what are you doing ? Quite obviously you could see what he was doing,as he was rearranging the tables for the people that had just arrived and asked for a table of 12!! , if we could see what he was doing why couldn't he see this ? and more to the point why did he have to do this in front of paying customers ,it was really embarrassing for us and for the people waiting to be seated ,it was as though he was trying to embarrass the staff member.I asked on leaving the pub who he was and to my astonishment I was told he was a trainee manager/manager by the name of Damien .Being a past manager myself I do not understand why a reputable company such as Mitchells and Butler would have someone as him working for them.Not only did he ridicule a member of staff in front of paying guests but he didnt wear a name badge ( and now I know why ) neither did he wear clothing suitable for a work place environment..

We have been frequent visitors to Sizzling pubs for a few years now & was really disappointed with our latest visit. Atmosphere ok, cleanliness ok, but when it came to the meals it went from promising to terrible!!. I ordered all day breakfast on a hot plate, the plate was not hot the waitress carried it without a cloth & the meal was cold, cold bacon, cold beans, cold mushrooms, lukewarm chips. I sent mine back & requested my money back. My wife had Messy mexican chicken on a skillet & even the skillet was not piping hot like they say it should be, chips only just edible but she ate it, should have sent that back as well really .

A family get together for 24 people was most enjoyable by the fact Damian and his team looked after us all exeptionaly well, all the food came out together and was piping hot, and not one single complaint from any of the party, a lovely evening had by all. Thanks Damian and the team.

Staying in a pub with rooms down the road which is expensive it was a relief to see a sizzling pub 2 minutes down the road. Working away 4 nights a week, end of my second day I called in for tea.

Went here last Saturday for my mums birthday I haven’t been here for ages as last time we came it wasn’t very good .this time it was fantastic there was 8of us and the food was fantastic really good value I was surprised when I went to pay the bill how reasonable it was .will certainly be returning

We visited just before 5.00 pm and had quick and efficient service. Half hour later the place was full with queues for service and I suspect a longer wait for food. Great value - good options on the menu

We went out for a family meal at the King and Miller pub at Retford on 4th July.

Food excellent, service good. Had mixed grill, Gammon was some of the best tasting had in a long time. Wife had three chicken roast, very good. Will definitely call again when in area.

Chose this pup as menu looked good Ordered our food. Took over an hour for starters to arrive soup ok vegan samosas came with holondaise. Took another 40 mins for main courses. I had gammon and egg and left most of it as gammon burnt chips undercooked. My sons vegan curry looked and tasted awful. He ate it only because he didn’t want to wait an hour for a replacement. Do not go. It is terrible

Sat on the edge of the main Retford to Bawtry Road you will find this nice presentable Inn serving good fayre and drinks at reasonable prices. The bar area is well laid out and the outside seating area is very spacious. Would recommend.

My family and I visited for breakfast last week and were ‘greeted’ by a very grumpy lady (who turns out to be the manageress). Not a smile or welcome to be seen and weirdly, I felt compelled to ask if she was ok??!! No idea why I did that as I got a snotty ‘yes’ in reply. The chap who served us was ok. The food was not only excellent value for money but very good.

Once again at the king and miller 10 out of 10 brilliant meal. The staff here should go to the cannon sizzler in worksop and show them how it should be done

We stopped here after getting our car fixed close by we had a lovely late lunch I ordered wrong meal for my husband and they were very accommodating and changed for the correct one at no extra cost the staff were very polite and very helpful will definitely go back again

My daughter and I called on speck around 3.30/4pm on a Saturday afternoon. We were surprised at how busy the place was, we thought most of the lunch time diners would have gone by now. Mind you, they did have a reasonable sized party in, each ordering separately. The young lady working there warned me that it is always busy on a Saturday. However, they didn't seem phased, and although there was a bit of a wait for food it was nothing unreasonable. All the staff were polite and helpful and the quality of the food was spot on - my daughter had the breaded halloumi starter which was deep fried but not greasy at all. We both then ordered a burger - mine being a chicken fillet burger (looked and tasted like it was cooked on a BBQ) with chips and my daughter had the southern fried chicken burger. Again, none of the food was greasy which we were very pleased with. I feel the prices are pretty average, nothing to moan about there either! So all in all, a pretty good experience. Maybe the vegetarian menu could be a little more extensive? Especially in this day-and-age.

The staff were very friendly and went out of there way to accommodate a table for us when we needed it. We were very grateful as both of my parents are elderly.

Clean and tidy restaurant area. Quick service. Food hot, but basic pub food. Don’t have high expectations and you won’t be disappointed. Staff seemed friendly but didn’t come across as confident when the waiter couldn’t name the dish on the plate. Maybe a new starter? Aware everyone has to start somewhere.

Stopped in for some dinner. We both had a sizzling plate. The ribeye steak was lovely and tender. The Whitby scampi is also great. Food comes hot , fresh and sizzling. Great value for money and the staff are really friendly. Keep up the good work.

Heard a lot about the King and Miller thought we would try it out, was not disappointed a lovely meal serve promptly with good service, would definitely go again

Food was well served and hot, portions certainly large enough, a good choice, something for everyone. It's certainly not 'haute -cuisine' and the toilets were some of the worst I've ever seen but for a swift meal-break it's fine.

Went for a spot of lunch while out in Retford, nice enough pub inside. Wouldn't of hurt the gentleman who took my order to have cracked a smile. My partner orderd a surf and turf which was good and I got the halloumi fajitas which I was quite disappointed with as the skillet had loads of onions and peppers and only two pieces of halloumi everything just looked chucked together. Puddings were quite nice. Overall it was ok but not fantastic

Booked a family meal for my dads birthday as we were told we could have a table by the television to watch my dads beloved team Man City play their last game of the season..... unfortunately after the 8 of us ordered our meals and waited to watch the the football match we had asked to watch (the main reason we came) the barmaid advised us that and I quote “soz my mates wanna watch the Liverpool game” and gestured towards 2 people sat at the bar with a pint...... absolutely disgusting attitude and service..... and don’t get me started on the food!!! Never ever again

Sorry guy's didn't have a chance to photograph the food we were starving! Drove straight past this pub loads of times. Called in and both had a Mucky Mexican. One with salad & other with curly fries. BEAUTIFUL. Definitely going back there.

The food was deliscious, great value for money and a very friendly service.I managed to cut myself with a steak knife, after being a complete dingbat and trying to use it to open a sauce sachet I could not open the normal ways. The staff were fab and gave me a plaster and did not make a fuss sympathizing with my embarrassment at my stupidness. Will definately be going back on my next visit.

Called in one evening for a family meal, The staff shuffled tables for us and were very helpful. There were special offers on at great prices. The food wasn't a la carte but was good for pub food, the meals came quickly, they were tasty and hot. Four main courses and drinks for £30 provided excellent value. Would go again if in the area.

We came here for a meal to end our day after a visit tip a Sundown Adventureland. The food is average but can't fault the service or value for money. We had 4 adult meals and drinks for £31! The staff were all friendly, helpful asks accommodating as we were a party of 8 and needed tables shuffling. Would visit again if in the area.

Well another weekend and another trip out for Sunday dinner. We decided on the king and miller as it had mixed reviews. I could see why. There were 4 of us in total. 2 of us had a mix grill, one of us had fish chips and peas and the other one had lemon chicken kebabs. The bill came to just over £32 for the 4 meals but I don't think they were value for money. The chips were nearly cold. The 5oz steak was hard to cut with the steak knife. The top part of my mixed grill was warm but the bottom, which was onions and gammon, was really hot. The best part was the taste of the sausages but they were mostly black in colour. I don't think that it was value for money and I wouldn't rush back. The best time to visit this place to feel like you are getting something for your money, is Monday to Friday when they have the 2 meals for £8, offer. Maybe then the food will look better value.

As a family we use this pub restaurant on a regular basis it's not long had a refurbishment which made it look and feel a lot better. There is plenty on the menu and a menu for kids as well. It's also good for vegetarians as my daughter in law is one and as no problems with the choice of food, the prices are really good for the meals and I have never had a bad meal here. They have just put curly Frys back on the menu which is excellent as I love these compered to the normal chips. The drink prices are OK not over priced all in all its a good meal for the price. Depending on the time you want to go it's sometimes a good idea to book a table as it can get very busy as you can expect at good prices and food. The car park has two disabled bays and is quite big but some times very busy. I recommend this place.

The decor in the pub is very nice. The food was terrible , I had a rump steak. It was seriously over cooked. It was inedible.The waiter did apologise and gave me a free drink but I should of had my money back.

First visit since refurbishment. Not over impressed with decor . Food was very nice but we spent the wholemeal batting off loads of flies. Windows were closed so guess they are regulars! Commented to waiter who said theyare only allowed to use swatters! Perhaps each table should be supplied with one then!Come on, surely spraying overnight would solve this health problem.

The fact that the place was covered in flies, we ordered our food, staff chatting between themselves, one staff on her laptop on the best table in there, so the food arrives and my lasagne was burnt and the salad was disgusting to the point where they put a salad root stub in to, my sisters jacket potato was old! And when she asked for a fresh one there was no apology so when she finally got her jacket potato it wasn't even cooked... we complained and the bar man couldn't care less, there was a chap that came over and he was amazing, returned money and apologised and offered us dessert, we declined. But he was the only staff member that made the effort and picking up everyone's slack! All the other staff was rude and didn't care, you can tell this place is badly managed, and it's a place I used to love, wow! I advise people not to go here, if that's the state of the food given then what state is the kitchen I wonder, iv been ill all afternoon and will be taking this even further. I put a review on there Facebook and they kept deleting my comments and messaging me to give them a call. No thanks!Atmosphere was awful.Blah. Staff quickly accommodate us as a very large group turning up. We were served very quickly with hot tasty food.Good for a meal/drink out. Good atmosphere.

We quite often choose to go to the King and Miller and since a recent spruce up, it's even more pleasurable. The menu has also been changed and includes some delicious new dishes. Service is always quick and a very pleasant, relaxed atmosphere.

Was quite surprised with several new items on the menu. Chicken mushroom and Stilton served on a mashed potato bed with peas is very nice. The place has just had a refurbish and looks good. Staff are friendly and knowledgeable about what they serve. Would recommend for a cheap teatime meal.
