Staff pleasant. Food good value..can take the dog in.. been going there for years

We often come here when we want a relaxing chilled night with great food. Never disappoints.

Dog friendly, food was really nice, very good choice on the menu, and service was fast.

On my doorstep, so a couple of minute drive. Cheapest Sunday roast around, you really do get what you pay for. I hate rating food because someone has spent time in prepping and cooking it. Firstly, plate came with gravy on already on it, it wasn't the thickest of gravy so that was a little disappointing, the option of putting our own gravy on would have been nice. The veg in my opinion were over cooked, no bite to them no firmness which I suppose some people prefer but its down to the individual. The roast pots were again very soft and a little crunch would have been nice. Beef was OK as were Yorkshire puds. My absolute hate is having instant mash which I'm 99% sure this was. Service was fine, food came quickly, but I would genuinely pay more and have the quality a little better.

Excellent portions, relaxed atmosphere.

Had a family meal at the half moon, and we all commented on how good the food was. The staff at the Half moon were very polite and helpful. The restaurant was clean and well presented.

We stood at the bar for a while then 2 young girls appeared and we felt like we was disturbing there fun. We were told we were booked on a table but we had to ask where it was and it seemed to much trouble to show us to our table . We spent around 10 mins to sort what we was having , went to the bar to order and the first thing we wanted wasn’t on the menu so we had to start again then we placed the order, food can was ok but we ordered peppercorn sauce it came but like water. I had a mixed grill but wasn’t the best and the stake was extremely tough . My wife had chilli but only Luke warm. The staff was at the bar laughing and joking and messing about we was not impressed. We decided to leave and no acknowledgement we all felt like we was putting them out . I did see a sign asking for staff and to be honest I’d replace them all and have someone more mature to direct and be front of house. Overall a bad experience and won’t be returning we were all very disappointed to say the least and it’s such a beautiful place and setting .

Had to approach staff when arrived for a seat and the portion sizes are ridiculous the price much nicer places for the price I ordered a sizzler with 2 wraps and the cheese they send wasn't enough for a child avoid at all cost money grabbing cost cutting the onion nest was 1 onion ring it's a joke

I feel for the staff who have to front what once was a place of repute. Minimum wage, minimum standards. They deserve better standards but so do the clientele. Where did the leaves and foliage on the floor come from? How confident on your standards are you when asked "can we set up a table tab" to be told "NO" Why? What is the issue? Will there be a problem with the food, service? Are you that confident patrons will not pay for something they have not received? I booked for a party of eight people. My Family who I had not seen in over six months due to medical issues. The party aged from 5 years old to 65 years old. At any age this dining experience could only be classed as 1* The 2* review is placed because I feel for the staff who have to work in such difficult environment. When I first complained a young chap attended our table and was shaking so much I feared his acne would explode. You do not pay these staff enough to accept complaint for your inadequacies of quality, You are a disgrace to the hospitality industry. I an self employed. Most of my guests tonight are. £170+ bill for food that was of just eat standard, cleanliness that was of student accommodation complaint and above all, a manager who was advised of our complaints stated" I do not know what to say" We asked for an email address to issue our complaints and was told it's on the menu. We were promised a take away menu which would contain the same contact but it did not arrive. My first family gathering following major surgery was totally spoiled by the experience of what used to be a restaurant of standards. Hospital kitchens serve better food and you do not need to wade through a forest to find a table. This was an experience to forget and I hope other similar reviews make the head office, not the venues team who work under their guidance, realise the reason people are choosing other options in which to spend is they have got it wrong. The manager who handled my complaint was 25 years old at best. I wonder if the directors of this hospitability business have daughters who have to front such a totally negative experience of the service the staff are able to provide. Follow my example. The staff can only do their best .

Frozen food with fancy names, burnt and long wait times… Meat Platter was horrific! Boston smoky bbq beans… give it a break, squirting bbq sauce on baked beans doesn’t make them Boston bbq beans… When was the chicken fried? Probably killed of for the last bird flu outbreak in the early 2000’s, Literally could of pulled leftovers out my freezer, thrown them at the air fryer and it would have tasted better…

Went here for Christmas lunch! Very disappointed. Got starters on time but then waited nearly 1.5 hours for main course! I understand that it was busy but then when it arrived it was Luke warm & the lamb was tough, the veg could have done with cooking a bit longer too. We didn’t wait for dessert. We visited the half moon last year and it was far better! Never again for Christmas dinner!!!!

Booking a 12.30 sit down so as to fit in with our busy plans with children and grand children. We arrived at 12.20pm there was no one to great us at the door and show us to a table so had to queue at the bar and wait to be served and be allocated a table. We got a table a sat with our drinks. 1.20pm. Out started of Baked camabert arrived. Warm but not hot so the cheese was no longer runny but none the less still edible. Then we had to wait a further 45 minutes for our mains which when it did arrive was warm. Not hot as you would expect. A few tables around us getting agitated with a similar situation of long delays in getting food. Then for some strange reason we were offered the same meal again when in reality they were meals for another table and they had not realised they had cleared our main plates and we were waiting for desert. Because of our busy day, we opted after waiting a further 30 minutes. To leave and carry on our busy day. There was no atmosphere with no music playing and a lot of miserable people waiting for food around us. The meal really was a flop. And for the money very disappointing.

Wonderful place for an evening meal, cosy and comfortable atmosphere Friendly and welcoming service, One thing makes me smile everything is seeing the pub sign picture..its a crescent moon and not a half moon 😀 🌜

Both enjoyed our food this time and last time. I had chicken and mushroom pie both times because it was excellent. My sister had chicken diane, today she had spicy chicken with salad chips and chilli jam delicious. Then an enormous sundae to share. We will be back.

If you are looking for a pub with more of a calm restaurant vibe then this is the place to go. Closes early, I think it was 9.30. . Food was good and plenty of parking .

The menu has had an upgrade since I last went a year or so ago. Highly recommend the menu now. The slow cooked beef and mix grill are lovely

I had a house mixed grill and it was beautiful yummy yum 😋

It was difficult to judge the atmosphere, because we visited late afternoon and there very few people in. Nothing to write home about on this pub.

Cannot fault the food. But cleanliness is missing. The seats are food stained and filthy. Some seat are far too low for the tables. The toilet cleanliness is by far the worst I have ever ever seen. Absolutely disgusting. Not sure I'll return until I hear it's rectified.

Great food. I had sirloin steak & jkt potatoes. The disabled toilet is in dire need of an upgrade. No mirror.toilet roll dispenser is not in use .soap dispenser broken. Latch on door not working properly. A very rusty looking radiator .not very clean

Absolutely shocking Sunday roast! All ping food microwave veg bag shared between 2 had a premium roast dread to think what a small looked like microwave mash Best thing about it was home made Yorkies!

Lovely place in the middle of a busy through road. We arrived at opening time and suddenly cars were appearing from all directions so we knew it should be ok. It was Mixed grill Monday, fab food, staff friendly and excellent value for money.

Some meals 2 for £16 week days 12 - 18:00. Plus Thursday steak day. Good service. Have been several times before.

Excellent vegan food. Stopped by here with my family after a long day. To say we were all pleasantly impressed is an understatement. We will definitely visit again! Highly recommend!

Had a decent meal Japanese chicken karaage and partner had the pie. Pie full of tender meat with a puff pastry lid. An eclectic mix of decor/ art. Confused. Good experience no issues apart from the table felt sticky.

Worst customer service I've ever had. Wait over an hour and food had not arrived. Went to bar ask about food . Bar staff went to kitchen to return 5 minutes later to say kitchen had no ticket and would I like a refund said yes and I want the 2 soft drinks refunding as well . Her reply was I have to go ask manager . 5 minutes later a women wearing scruffy / dirty chefs clothes told me I had upset her staff what about the upset customer. No apology just bad attitude makeing it out that it was my fault that they had lost the ticket .

Tables could do with a deep clean, sticky and smelly, food was good

Had the Steak club offer of 2 rump steaks, chips & peas + a bottle of wine for £29.99. The food was really good and excellent value for money.

My Husband and I love it here! I'm pretty picky so I always want to change something on my dinner but they are always accommodating and friendly. We like the food too, good value for money! Also they are dog friendly, win in my eyes! 😁

I had large fish & chips, well it said large on the menu. A 6" fish and about 15 chips. It cost them 3 deserts, 3 more drinks and my regular custom as I won't darken their door again!

Nice food and great service. Lady took my wife's allergies very seriously and willing went to check she would be ok to order what she wanted. Food was lovely, 4 mains + a child meal was around £75. I had Japanese Chicken, something a bit different, and it was lovely, very spicy if your wondering. We finished with the chocolate brownie and I can recommend that too. Would we go back, definitely.

Quite a while since we came here after a big so brilliant meal , and a que for refunds but after a dog walk in the woods we decided to give it another go .. We waited for someone to come over so we could ask which area we were allowed to sit with a dog … As I learnt after she was the manager , very rude asking impatiently what our table number was , obviously we didn’t have one as we hadn’t sat at any table .. We looked around , all were reserved , I told her this , she pointed to a high table and said you’l have to sit there then , very rude . We ordered food , which was very mediocre, looking around at the miserable staff , no one asked if our food was ok , quite obvious that they didn’t really care either way … we told the waiter we had ordered sauce , he said ye I know I’ve forgotten it , brought it out , didn’t put it in front of me just put it on the other side of the table and walked away …. The food was only just warm at the best … looking at how rude the manager was serving everyone ordering, I’m amazed anyone goes in , not surprising it was very quite for a Father’s Day when most places are booked up, decided not to stay for dessert as we just wanted to get out …. Unless your very desperate I would advise to avoid this place …

Had the misfortune to visit the Half Moon on Whitwell Common today. This used to be a decent pub with good food. Upon arriving we found it was steak night. Browsed the menu and decided on two half rack of ribs and gammon steak plus drinks. The food came in a reasonable time, but after putting condiments on the food, it was found that the chips and peas which accompanied the meat was cold. A waitress came and asked if everything was ok, we told her that the chips and peas were cold and she said she would tell the kitchen. That was it we never saw her again, and no-one else bothered to sort anything else. Needles to say we will not be visiting or recommending this place. Also noticed that when a waitress cleared and cleaned the table next to us, she sprayed the table with the condiments and a tissue and knife and fork on the table and just wiped around them. Very poor hygiene. Another reason not to go hear again.

Seemed empty for some reason. Maybe because despite being a roadside pub in the middle of nowhere the only alcohol free beer served is Heineken zero (aka p*ss water) really?

First visit and overall a very pleasant experience. Food was good, although the mixed grill had dry peas, no tomatoe and the egg was way over cooked and to be honest should not have been allowed to leave the kitchen (see photo), also the chicken was very dry and tasteless. Dessert was very good, however as it was quiet, (8pm) the staff were keen to get away, no we drank up and left at 8:30. Customer came in at 8:10pm and was told they were closing soon. Overall a descent place but not as good as my expectations. Worth only 4 stars.

Came in for a midweek lunch, the food came promptly but it did not seem rushed at all. The food was lovely, and the service was good. There was a good variety of choice on the menu and it was reasonably priced. There was plenty of parking

The menus looks really good that the best part this was the first and last time we will eat hear we stopped here on sunday after noon for lunch i had fish and chips and was okay the wife had Chicken skewer look really nice but she only had a small amount of the chicken as it was pink and mushy and felt like it was under cooked the waiter was called over and explained the problem ? the girl did offer to try again with the same meal but the wife said no she had been put off and then took the meal away and nothing so we left and called and got a snack at a shop The customer service was not good at all

Very nice food two for £16 menu very good.fast polite staff.very busy on Sundays. Try it.went on the 1/8 had to wait 40 mins for food when the mixed grill arrived the meat was cold sent mine back when it was returned 5 mins later most of the meat was warm except the gammon .my partner ordered steak medium it was cremated sent it back next piece was really tough to cut even with a steak knife .wrapped up all the meat and gave it the dog.will not go again.this was 2.30 and they were not really busy well below standard.

As a family of 8 we all had a lovely meal, the service was great and it had a great play area for the children.

Long trip from dorset this was my first stop, mid afternoon on a Saturday and it was very busy only just managed to get a table glad we did as we had a lovely meal.

Called here on a warm may Sunday at lunch time unplanned, fancied a drink and decided to get lunch at same time. Drinks were nice and we had both ordered the chicken and bacon salad dish. It’s was quite expensive at £13 compared to a lot on the menu so when it arrived was a little disappointed. There was plenty of chicken and bacon but the salad its self had very little content. Little bit of lettuce tomato and onion and that was about it. Very disappointing considering I could have got a decent sized meal at the place for less. Salad is generally quite cheap so wouldn’t have hurt for them To add a Little more so everyone happy. The visit itself was pleasant and no complaints but the meal lacked value for money

It's been a while since we were here as the last meal was awful. But the menu has changed. Staff great and the food 1st class and delicious. worth a visit.

Had fajita came on a skillet they were great husband had chicken and ribs witch was OK but not great had sticky toffee pudding for afters that was delicious strongbow was OK bit flat.

Nice spacious area when you walk in Friendly staff, Larger than expected but didn't know what to expect really. 8 specials on pieces of paper in front of a mirror that you had to get close to read. Offer of 2 meals for £14, on selected times and items, Menu not over sized but with a good selection. I Ordered the mushroom and Stilton topped burger, comes with fries and a battered onion ring thing, Was all tasty and well cooked, Waiter presented food saying what it is then walked away without offering any sauces or anything else, I didn't want anything but would have been to be offered. Wheelchair friendly

Dirty glasses terrible service very limited menu. Won't be dinning here again. Nothing has changed. Fish and chips sent the first one back burnt to a crisp, second fish not burnt but a mash of soggy batter. Burger I think was probably shipped in from Mcdonalds, a tasteless mush. We've tried it this one more time definitely not coming here again.

We live nowhere near, but are now regular visitors. Lovely place.

The Chicken and cheese burger has got to be one of the worst burgers I’ve ever had. Disgusting 🤮 . Over cooked frozen chicken burger was rock hard no sauce just a bit of onion and few bits of lettuce.

Really nice couple of steaks and a reasonable bottle of wine for £24 what more can you ask for, cooked perfectly and really tender with friendly service, we will be back 😀

We recently had our wedding reception dinner here on a Friday afternoon. Stacey looked after us from start to finish. The tables were nicely laid out and we were away from the main area. They set up a special table for our cakes and gifts. The drinks were served quickly. The food (for 19 guests) was nearly all served at the same time! It was hot, excellent and we all had different meals. Stacey checked regularly that all was well and cut and served the cakes and coffee to us. The whole reception lasted about 2 1/2 hours. We were so pleased with how everything went and the prices were very reasonable. There was ample free parking and the pub decor inside was lovely and tasteful and reasonable easy-listening background music. Would definitely recommend and we will go again for meals out.

I went with my good lady for Sunday lunch, The staff were very friendly. We ordered Sunday dinner, it arrived very quickly, Both my wife and myself thought the dinner was excellent. 10/10

I booked a table for 15 of us to celebrate my dad's 80th birthday. We were delighted to have a lovely, quiet area all to ourselves, and the staff were exceptionally friendly and attentive. The food arrived promptly, and every dish was thoroughly enjoyed by all. Plus, the prices were very competitive. We would absolutely love to return in the future!

We have been to this pub several times and always had great food, so much so that we have recommended it to friends.... not any more. We called in last night and the food was terrible. The "Pulled Park" on my Nachos starter was in what I can only describe as a ball and was totally inedible. Although the Nachos were OK, the melted cheese was rubbery and Guacamole non existent. I returned the Pulled Pork to the kitchen when the waitress collected the plates and she said she would pass on my comments as the "owner" was cooking. The mains arrived, my partners Hosin Beef was OK, he said, the chips weren't hot and his "Onion Nest" looked like a soggy mess. My Sizzling Chicken arrived... an over done Chicken Breast thickly sliced over sizzling Peppers and Onions that were so dark in colour it was hard to differentiate what was what. The Wraps arrived afterwards on a plate that was so cold it must have been in the fridge with two very cold, folded Wraps and small containers with Salsa, Guacamole and Sour Cream When the waitress came to collect our plates and asked if our meal was OK, after saying it was not up to the same standard as we had previously had, she half-heartedly offered a free sweet or drink.... we declined but rest assured, we will not be returning. Surely, if the chef/owner was given our poor feedback twice, he/she should have come to see us.... nothing. Our bill was almost £50.00, don't waste your money.

Called in last Saturday after meaning to visit after years of passing the pub. Wish I never bothered. Rude staff under pouring your pints, giving a huge head on cider when it shouldn't have one, then shrugging it off as "it's lively so it always does it", if she was a new starter it could be forgiven with a little more training, but she seems like she's been there for a long while! Came back to bar to politely query how long our food would be after waiting around 50 minutes with no heads up, and the pub didn't seem that busy (especially for a Saturday) and others that ordered at the same time got their food after about 20 minutes, but was blatantly ignored by 2 staff at the bar after they looked at me. Eventually I got their attention after having to say and then shout excuse me twice, one girl started asking whats the matter, then the older lady who served me came back and explained that she was "busy bottling up" in an awful disrespectful tone, and that they were short staffed (again, I get as it does happen, but you explain at point of ordering and advise of a wait on food). After over a decade in the industry, I would never dream of ignoring a customer at the bar, especially after making eye contact, and when you are short staffed, you merely explain and apologise and tell them you'll be with them as soon as you can, not walk off without a word and then return and speak to them like dirt when they are already annoyed after being ignored. Bottling up is always secondary to serving customers unless they request something that you dont have in stock on the bar. This turned what was a mild inconvenience where I would have given the pub another chance into a huge annoyance where I don't see why I should spend another penny in the venue. Eventually, the food came after a polite waitress came over and apologised for the wait, but it was around an hour after we ordered, which we were very close to walking out and demanding a refund. Everything on both meals was barely warm, apart from the steaks which were hot. They also forgot to switch the peas for beans, which is not an issue as its easy done, just added to the whole situation. The steak itself was nice in all fairness, just a shame about everything else on our visit! Never had a check back, and I don't think any tables nearby did either. Doubt I will ever return.
