This is the best pub ever! We came on holiday to this area especially to have my husband’s 60th birthday celebrations at this pub. The staff, the front of house chap, waiting staff are just brilliant. Beer and wine excellent. Our food was outstanding. We shared a selection of starters, all great, fave the cuttlefish. The chips are just amazing! The steak is stunning as are the burgers. Mackerel curry is fab. Puddings are also great, best being the sundae. Honestly I can not rate this pub high enough - please go!

My husband & I stayed at the nearby caravan park with our dog & went to the Journeys End for dinner, after my husband saw it was dog-friendly & checked out the reviews. The whole experience was brilliant, from the minute we walked in! It opened at 6 & we arrived just after, behind two other people who, like us, had not booked. The lady behind the bar was so friendly & welcoming, despite being busy having to serve & check with the kitchen she could seat everyone. We were lucky enough to get a table immediately & we decided on the veggie burgers from the ‘bar menu’. OMG, the best veggie burger we’ve ever had-so full of flavour & served with rustic cut chips that were also deliciously crispy but not greasy! I don’t know if they do their own pickles, but even they tasted wonderful! The portions were incredibly generous-I’d say we both have good appetites, but I couldn’t finish the chips! It was so filling. We rarely decided to have dessert & had the hazelnut tiramisu, which was also one of the best we’ve tasted! If you’re in the area, I’d highly recommend a visit. If this place was near us, it would definitely be a regular haunt! All the staff are lovely, the food is to die for (& very good value, considering the portion sizes!)…even the rockin’ playlist was just up our street! Thank you for making our last night so wonderful! Sally & Nige (& Ollie the bulldog, who also loves your chips!:))

Having visited this area many times and when calling up last minute for a table we have not been able to get in to the journeys inn. This time I pre booked via email for Sunday lunch and an evening meal. Sunday lunch we were greeted by Paul who was so very welcoming and gave our dog a treat. Paul was so friendly and accommodating. Sunday roast, exceptional!! Plenty of food that was very tasty and cooked to perfection. We will be returning tomorrow for our evening meal and my only problem is choosing which meal to indulge in!! If you are lucky enough to get a reservation you won’t be disappointed.

Lovely surroundings, nice atmosphere and friendly staff. However, the food which was well cooked was just over facing. The portions were huge which for some would be a positive but for us a negative. The food for one was enough for four people and so much food must be thrown away. For me, being presented with a huge plate of food is a turn off and we won’t be returning.

I have visited the Inn, twice . The Inn did not disappoint and was excellent. I enquired at the door for a table as I did not have a booking and the restaurant went out of their way to seat us. The food was excellent and it was very pleasing to hear the food was locally sourced which was of great importance. I certainly will visit again and recommend this to visitors, family and friends.

We were doing a circular walk from Bigbury-On-Sea and arrived at the Journeys End about 2pm. This was about half way round the walk. I’d read great reviews on TA and we’d worked up an appetite. Imagine our disappointment when we arrived and found you have to book a table, even at lunchtime. However, the staff felt sorry for us and the chef soon rustled up an excellent fish and chips for us. It was lovely. The staff were very pleasant and we were made to feel most welcome. So my recommendation is that you always book a table here, you’ll not be disappointed.

Whilst on a scenic costal walk n the South Hams we came across this amazing pub hidden away in a picture postcard village with thatched stone built cottages. Dating back to 1300 this pub oozed all the charm and character you would expect and more, but the young front of house team were more than up to the challenge of 21st century service expectations with a friendly welcome and attentive service. It was lunch time and the bar menu was more than ample and I went for the sausage and mashed potato with onion gravy - absolutely delicious and probably the best I've ever tasted. With well kept beers, affordable prices and a relaxing atmosphere it would have been very easy to stay longer but the walk beckoned and I had to return to the 21st C but we will be back.

Traditional old pub with a lovely back garden, I really good find after a long walk! Good selection of food which was amazing!! Who knew a simple buttermilk chicken burger could be SO AMAZING?! The only reason for me not scoring the full marks was the service. Everyone was really friendly and very good until you got to the landlady (I think). It all seemed like too much hard work for her and she certainly didn’t make us feel welcome. Shame as her staff were fantastic.

If you are not needing gluten free I would definitely recommend this place. however despite informing upon advance booking that one of us was coeliac they were very unprepared and the waitress did not understand what coeliac disease was - thinking that cornflour and sesame oil is a no go when in fact it is fine and egg noodles would make me ill and I’m fine with rice noodles. This lack of knowledge made me very nervous to eat and not enjoy the experience as I could have done. Shame as what we had was nice and the fear of whether what I was eating was fine or not did put a dampener on my husbands birthday lunch out. I know it can be a pain but it’s much easier for the waitresses to know what meals can be adapted to gf in advance or listed on the board without either a busy kitchen being asked or the customer having to guess the ingredients.

Ricotta fritters, crispy duck pancakes and treacle tart. All delicious. Fritters especially were a delight, light and flavourful with just a hint of lemon. Perfect. This inn is not easy to find. It is the only pub on this section of the Coastal Path so it's full of walkers. Food portions, perhaps as a consequence are huge/hearty. There are copious amounts of mustard with the beef or ham so beware! There's a garden and a conservatory. They are dog-friendly. They are closed on Mondays and only do lunch between 12.00 and 14.00, not all day.

We had recently arrived and at 12.30 pm hoped we would be able to be in time or Sunday lunch. This is a pretty pub in a lovely Devon village and on entering, I asked if it would be possible to eat and if meals were served in the garden. We were told in rather unfriendly terms: "You can if you can find a table, but make sure it is not near the pizza oven as we don't serve there." We found several vacant tables that seemed to be in the right area and went to the bar to order. However, a man behind the bar then announced: "You can't order food because you haven't booked. As you can see we are busy in here." He then rolled his eyes. We left. Well done to the last reviewer who at least got served here. Apparently the food is good, but with this type of 'hospitality' would avoid at all costs.

I had a lime and soda £1 70 eeek my partner had a ginger beer non alcoholic £3 90 we thought the prices were high for soft drinks and were told it was because of the sugar tax ...lime and sodas range usually from 50p to 1 20 at most and ginger beer no more than 2 75 ..noticed there was a query about the price of lager on an earlier post.

My grandmothers best friend recently lost her husband after 32 years of marriage and so our family hosted her on a trip to Devon to revisit where they spent their honeymoon. We arrived at the pub, the door was open but the landlady shouted at us very rudely that the pub was closed and told us to wait outside in the horrible stormy weather for 15 minutes. Having done this, we walked in and my grandmothers friend mentioned that she came to this pub on her honeymoon with her late husband. The landlady scoffed at her and made a comment about 'how long ago that must have been'. Needless to say we left before purchasing any food or drinks. It put a huge downer on the trip. Local friends always warn us to avoid the Journeys Inn at all costs, and now I know why. I would advise the landlady to sell up and start a business where she doesnt need to act hospitably to human beings any more...... Absolutely appalled by her behaviour.

Firstly parking - this is a Devon village, so it was around long before the car was invented so, as you come into the village, opposite the church is the pub car park. Stick it in there, its free, and then follow the signs, walk down hill, its about 200 yds and then you're all sorted...you wont be able to park outside the pub, so dont even try, and there are residents to consider.

A lovely pub in a great little village. Good food, although not a huge choice at lunchtime - sandwiches in particular were really good. Limited real ales available on our visit. Service was prompt and friendly.

Every time I come here I wonder how I could forget how excellent the food is. The atmosphere is that of a pub from yesteryear and how pubs in Devon should be. The nene of the pub is perfect because you wouldn’t want to journey any further having found this place! Connor and Tracey run a gem of a business and have an adventurous menu. Don’t think for a second that you’re visiting an average pub grub boozer.

Always willing to give a pub a second chance, especially since our friends had told us the new chef was great. The last time we came, a few years back, we'd been made unwell by the food and so it was with some trepidation that we returned. We ordered a pair of pints and both chose fish and chips. The food arrived (a bit too) quickly. The two huge mounds of fish were in a batter that I have never seen before: at least 5mm thick, brown and soggy on the outside, undercooked on the inside- more like a dough- so stodgy that it had to be scraped off. The fish inside was questionable- it didn't taste like cod and was undercooked. The huge chips had that 'old potato' taste- a sign of cold leftovers, reheated for convenience. Memories of our last visit came flooding back and we couldn't eat any more. We went to pay up and had to query the bill- £12 for two pints of beer!! £5 for Estrella, £7 for Erdinger!! OK Erdinger is a special beer but at that price, you need to advertise the price so you know not to order another one! We left the pub felling ripped off and disgusted by what we had eaten. Never has a pub made us feel like this before on TWO occasions. We won't be giving it a third chance.

Sunday lunch is my favourite meal of the week. It is often difficult to find great places but not anymore! Lunch was stunning. It could be argued the portion sizes were too big, but I wasn’t complaining! Service was attentive and the food for 5 arrived together and hot. Will we return? You bet! Cannot wait to visit Bigbury again and stop here for Sunday lunch.

We visited the journeys end inn after having fun on bigbury beach. I must admit this was the most enjoyable Sunday lunch I have had for a long time.. why? Firstly the food was delicious, but they do things differently... the Sunday lunch had a skillet of roasted veg, including celeraic, onions, parsnip and carrots. Added to that was great portion size and the final piece was a great journeys inn beer. The pub has a conservatory area which is light and lovely. The landlady is great too.. all in all it is the best place in the area for Sunday lunch. But book up!!!

After a nice walk with the dogs we called in for a spot of lunch and a well deserved drink, we all decided on a steak sandwich served with with some lovely chips. There were some really nice other choices but the steak won!! The dogs were welcomed in and were quite happy to lay on the carpet soaking up the chilled out atmosphere. Lovely little pub give it a try

My wife and I visited this pub 3 days in a row as the food was excellent. This pub gives you a good sized portion of very good food and beer. It was 6pm when we went, it was quiet but getting busy even at this time.

This is a lovely old pub in a picturesque village near the fabulous beach at Bigbury on Sea. Went yesterday for Sunday lunch with group of four. Warm welcome and good food - the mushroom soup was delicious and fragrant with tarragon. Roast beef and pork beautifully cooked, nice roast potatoes and Yorkshire pud with an array of well cooked vegetable side dishes including cauliflower topped with cheese, parsnips carrots and separate peas and greens. Portions enormous so you might forego the starter or make sure you are really hungry when you get there. Would definitely go again.

A lovely old and atmospheric building, with imaginative and tempting food, which is served with a smile and is delicious! It totally deserves the accolade of Best Pub in Devon 2017/18. Best to book, as obviously gets very busy. Recommend the sausage and mash, the prawn noodles, the trifle and the marmalade pudding. Could not be faulted.

Second time we have been there and just as good. Super Creedy duck to make into pancake rolls. Thatcher’s cider was nice and cold and in excellent condition.

This pub won "Best Pub in Devon 2017/2018" and certainly gave us good meals in the evening and the following lunchtime after a coastal path walk. Starters included goats' curd with figs and honey and very popular duck with pancakes. Local lobster followed as well as meat dishes and the variety of beers on offer was appreciated. We had booked a 6.30 meal in order to be fitted in. The following day all the indoor tables were full but we had a good steak sandwich, burger and more goats' curd lunch outside. Children were welcomed and there as a menu for them. Journey's End was voted our best holiday eaterie.

Warm welcome and always good service. Quirky garden area thoughtfully designed. The menu is a little bit different from most. We had a noodle dish,a sandwich and shell on prawns. All very nicely done and presented. Prices are reasonable for such good food. We have only Sat I side before which can be a little gloomy......it is however a very old pub. The additional conservatory area is a bit lacking in character but provides needed space on a busy Sunday. We have never been disappointed with the food having been about 5 times now.

Old fashioned village inn, serving a connoisseur’s selection of ales and ciders. Excellent food, serving foods in season. This year we were too late for the usually sublime squid. Always busy in the holiday season, full of families staying at local holiday houses. Booking essential.

Totallly disregard any previous negative reviews. The Journeys End offers top quality food normally only available in quality restaurants showing distinctive imagination and flair. If you want everyday fast food this will not be for you.

I work locally just a few doors down the road in a local opticians and frequent this lovely little cafe fairly often for lunch. I usually get a sandwich from their deli counter and they keep me coming back. I have tried a number of different options and none of them have disappointed. In the winter I especially like their soup of the day which is very well priced. I love the Mediterranean counter and often purchase a pot of Dolmades. If you're in the area I would recommend going here for lunch, you will be glad you did

We realise that this restaurant cannot provide a large menu especially during the autumn /winter but on our evening the fish choice was not on (replaced with a lazy prawn dish) and out of two desserts the crumble was also not available! Feel this is lazy as there is so much fish available locally and the excuses to not provide an apple crumble is in fact rather lazy from the kitchen. If you only want to offer pizzas and burgers, fine but don’t disappoint people with omissions.

We stayed here for close location to the polar Express train ride, excellent location, excellent staff service, also had a meal which was great food and breakfast, would definitely recommend and would stay again. Thank you.

My family and I had a fantastic and reasonably priced meal at the Imperial on Saturday. The food was tasty, plentiful and well presented - and the young waitress who served us was smiley and friendly. Will definitely return.

Dropped in for a quick lunch. Expensive for what it is. For example a small piece of frittata and a very small salad for nine ounces odd. Went home and had toast to supplement. Disappointing as had heard good things.
