This place is wonderful. We found it during a Google search and decided to risk it. I couldn't be more pleased with our decision. The staff were very friendly and the food was excellent. My son and I had the brunch bowl and my husband had the dhal. Then we each had a different vegan dessert. How often it is that you get a choice of vegan dessert? Often there's nothing at all. We visited at lunchtime and it was not busy. Don't miss this restaurant. It really is worth it.

what a wonderful, welcoming place. i have come here on so many different occasions - to study with a coffee, to grab a pint after a protest, on dates, community group meet ups etc. And Journey provides the most welcoming, comfortable & homely backdrop for each experience. the coffee/drinks are always good and I’m slowly making my way through the veggie/vegan menu with no disappointments & finding new favourites each time - normally I’m the type to order the same thing over and over rather than branch out, but here I know the quality is consistently high & I actually relish the opportunity to push the boat out every so often. soundtrack is always 10/10 as well, what a PLACE!!

We visited for lunch and had the Hash Bowl and the Grilled Cheese Sandwich! The Hash Bowl was outstanding, with brilliant flavours in every bite. The Grilled Cheese was good, and came with a great salad. Staff were very friendly and helpful. The decor inside was quirky and well put together.

This is now my go to place for everything from work meetings, cocktails on an evening or a special place to surprise a friend who is into trying new food and veggies we have never heard of before! The music is always cool, the owner is super friendly and goes out of his way to look after you. There is outside seating too that is a total sun trap. Literally nothing i can fault. Oh, and they are dog friendly !!

Beauty little vegan friendly independent that I whole hearted recommend. You could miss this place due to the scaffolding, which is why I'll include a rubbish picture for reference! Aim for the Laing Gallery and look out for that, then bypass it and get yourself in, you won't be disappointed! It's a low key kind of homely place, where you feel relaxed and comfortable, with friendly staff and lots of delicious vegan options. I'm really rooting for this place and looking forward to a return when I'm next in the area. The food was absolutely delicious and good value, particularly when you consider the quality, fresh ingredients. They also served us the only Bloody Mary I've actually liked! Although that was just a taste of my dining partners drink, as I had a really well-made Julep... which was in a class of its own - and I'm a picky drinker! While you can just pop in for drinks, I really recommend trying some of the food, from light bites to mains... I read somewhere that the menu was quite limited but I didn't find this to be the case, and I've uploaded a picture of what's available now. (Hope that's ok!) Lots of Vegan/Gluten free options! Super flavoursome and ethical - well worth the visit! Also, just to say, I felt safe and anxiety free in these strange times - so anyone with concerns about that, feel assured that everything is above board and really well considered for everyones wellbeing and safety.

So good to get back into the new, improved Journey. Much more space and bigger kitchen. Currently a reduced menu but still healthy and tasty vegan salads. Lovely welcome from Adam and crew. Outside seating, toilets, great food and lovely people. Just past the Laing Art Gallery. Well worth an escape from Northumberland street

I went to The Journey Cafe for lunch when I was in Newcastle with my son recently. I ordered the beetroot hummus which came on a big piece of lovely toast accompanied by a spot of green salad and coleslaw. The coleslaw was one of the best coleslaws I've ever eaten. The hummus was both colourful and tasty. The coffee was lovingly prepared and very tasty. I have a bugbear about flat whites that taste almost only of milk - at The Journey this was not an issue as my flat white was clearly coffee but not at all bitter. The decor is pleasing to the eye, with chunky pine tables, and I approve of the strategically-located Calvin&Hobbes wallpaper, but the best part of the interior is the cafe dog, who welcomes guests but doesn't hound them, although if a guest would like to play fetch, the cafe dog is certainly happy to join in. Thanks for a lovely timeout during what was otherwise a busy couple of days.

Despite being virtually empty on Christmas Eve lunchtime, they still managed to come up with one of the nicest soups I've ever tasted (sweet potato, parsnip and tarragon) followed by a large and pretty tasty slice of banana bread. With friendly service and very reasonable prices, this is definitely a place I'll be going back to whenever i'm in Newcastle.

Never heard of this place but passed and so ran in here one morning on way to a meeting in town. Super peaceful atmosphere hits you as soon as you walk in. Flat white one of best I’ve ever had and super yummy banana loaf. Highly recommend!

The minimalist, woody/earthy vibe has a pine fresh ambiance that is accented with life in all corners. It may not be as vibrant and well watered as it could be, but it is certainly living and more than surviving. The menu is small and specific, catering for any cultured palate. The interaction is both smooth and to the point, always a joy in my opinion. If your looking for somewhere to make you feel like your welcome beyond just a customer, this isn't the place for you. The banana loaf was sublime, delicately balanced and even after toasting still moist enough to enjoy thoroughly. The music ebbed and flowed with a sense of order and chaos that compliments the light and location the experience affords. Definatley worth checking out. ✌🏼 & ❤️

We dropped in to kill half an hour. Initially for just a tea and coffee but I suddenly decided that it being lunchtime, I might as well give food a go. As we were short for time, I went for "Dahl of the Day " Everything in here was new to us. It is a drop off restaurant as well as a bike shop. So casual with decor in keeping with the attached bike shop. Staff were relaxed, prompt and polite. The food was beautiful and priced very well. Veggy stuff but that's the way we are heading. Almost converted.

This is not far from where I work so I've been here a few times for lunch. The food is okay, good hearty stuff, but very limited choices for vegetarian and gluten-free and all that sort of stuff. But proper sandwiches, reasonable price, and good coffee

This a lovely cafe. Small, but great coffee, friendly staff and lovely dog. I was so pleased to see the alternative milk options and the chilled out vibe was just what I ordered. It looks like they have a good vegan selection and dairy free too. I’d love to see photos of your friendly caring dog on social media, I think I fell in love with him. I may return today before I go back home.

We popped out of the Laing Gallery having decided the cafe there didn't really have what we wanted and found The Journey steps away. I didn't really need a cycling cafe then, but maybe really good for that, but it turned out to be a great place for a wholesome, simple and good value lunch. I had some dal with peppers and leaf spinach and J had a filled wrap, with some good apple juice. They also have interesting things to read and if that was your need you could get bike repairs or loans or hook up with a man who organises tours. Give it a spin!

Absolutely excellent service. I arrived at the Journey shortly before 9am for breakfast. I was recommended the white tea; I've never tried this before - honestly very refreshing. The overnight oats porridge was a first and a winner when I was told about it I was unconvinced.. But with lashings of sultanas banana and honey it was the most fulfilling breakfast I've had for years.

I like a cycling cafe, so I am a little biased. Great Coffee and nice staff. I think it could have a little more cycling related decor but a nice little find in the city centre.

Called in for a coffee, they serve the side milk in a tiny bottle, which looked different, but made it difficult to pour and the rim of the bottle looked like it had just been rinsed not washed as remnants of old milk .

Not many places in Newcastle with coffee as good as this. The coffee is colour he same as Pink Lane coffee, the cakes include Gareth James brownies from Tynemouth and the sandwiches are handmade and toasted on demand. A real quality cafe with an interesting sideline in bike repair and promotion.

I love Magic Hat. Always go when i'm in Newcastle. The food is so creative and always generous. Had to ask for a doggy bag last time which the staff were happy to provide. Go and eat well with a clear conscience.
