Meli Cafe in Newcastle upon Tyne

One of my favorite places in Newcastle, the staff are lovely, the food is healthy and mostly organic ( which is what I’m looking for) every single dish that I’ve tasted was good,even their drinks! I recommend the soups that they serve they are to die for😍

Wasn't open when I got there, even though everywhere says it's open at 11 on Wed. Wasted trip

Quirky coffee shop with truly amazing cakes. Not the easiest to fine but absolutely worth it. Hot chocolate was also very good.

One of the best secret spots in Newcastle. I've been a few times and never been disappointed. The view is awesome, the space is cozy with a relaxed vibe. The owner is Greek and is lovely, last time I went, I mostly interacted with a Dutch guy who prepared our food and coffee - he gave great recommendations, was so easy to chat to and was so passionate about the food. Plenty of great vegan choices. You can't not love this place. Highly recommend whatever soup they do. The coffee is always 10/10.

All good except lattes were not very hot. Scones were fabulous

I visit this beautiful place again and again. The view is wonderful, the service is excellent and varied. As for those who work in the cafe , they are among the nicest people I have met in Newcastle.

Hidden gem. When we discovered Meli Cafe, it was under refurbishment for several months, but it was totally worth the wait. The owners are really lovely, and the cafe's got a great view. The cake we tried tasted rich and spectacular as well.

A friendly little cafe with good cake including some vegan and gluten free options.

This place offers a good laté (not super strong), great service, and a cute, cozy atmosphere. Don't forget to try their yummy cake fudge – a nice touch to the overall experience.

Really like this café, different, nice, relaxing and with a great view as it's at the top of a building. Excellent coffee and good service.

TL;DR - central location, great views, interesting menu, excellent service, amazing food and drinks, good prices! Meli cafe is a wonderful spot hidden away in a central location. It's located opposite Haymarket, up a few flights of stairs (lift available). Inside there are two seating areas, with one of them being particularly bright and airy, and having lovely views over Northumberland Street below (though it can get a little noisy when the windows are open and the bustle of the high street can be heard). The drinks menu has plenty of choice. In addition to the typical cafe options, there are various specialty teas, unique hot drinks and iced coffees, plus of course the Greek coffee. There are vegetarian paninis and various homemade sweet and savoury baked goods. The owner is very friendly and happy to talk through the menu. The prices are very reasonable too, especially considering the city centre location. They also have a loyalty stamp system where you can get a free drink after a certain number of stamps. The paninis, cakes and coffees are excellent. In particular the cheddar and apple scone is delicious. Also try the orange and semolina cake! Overall, a delightful place to chill and read a book with a coffee, or to hang out with friends, or to spend time with family. Totally recommended!

Great place. It is a little hard to find. There is a sign out the front and it's up the stairs past the antiques. Well worth trying to find!

Great wee cafe hidden away, definitely worth hunting it out. Food was lovely, staff extremely friendly and helpful, accommodated our teens making paninis up not on the menu. Cafe Meli was clean and very welcoming. Coffee was best we've ever had. Prices in line with quality of the food; paninis x 4, coffee x 4 and 2 cakes £40. Highly recommended 👌

Wonderful atmosphere with great music playing. Lovely high time view on the top of a building. Lots of natural light, many window seats as well, also option for high top bar style seating. Very nice coffee, well done latte art and amazing home baked cookies and cakes. Very friendly and great customer service! Thank you for having us

Absolutely love visiting this cafe! The staff are helpful, and encouraging when it comes to making decisions! The atmosphere is lovely, the format is relaxed and safe, while the food is simply superb! Currently visiting twice a week to play card games with friends, very happy with the service.

I found this cafe on the last day of a stay in Newcastle and I wish I had found it sooner - it is such a lovely place inside and the staff we so kind and helpful- explaining all the amazing drinks they have. Thanks for the Greek Coffee - it was delicious and set me on the right course for the rest of the day. I will be back next time I come to Newcastle to check out the amazing range of cakes.

A little gem of an independent cafe in the heart of Newcastle. Located near Haymarket metro, it serves delicious organic food. It's so nice, I went there for lunch on Thursday and went/had to go back on Friday.

Nice place, has great views out over the Northumberland street good for people watching. Lot of tasty drinks and food I'm digging into an Aztec hot chocolate with a huge spiced apple cake. Honestly this place is well worth a visit.

This is by far the best Cafe in Newcastle, forget Brew and Bite (they don't pay their staff), forget Costa (why would you want to bankrupt yourself for a cuppa) go here, to Meli. The service is absolutely incredible , the food tastes smashing and by jove is the tea absolutely stunning. Naturally the owner is a fan of honey (meli being Greek for honey) and if you have the money I highly recommend picking up a jar from him!

Meli is the best cafe in all of Newcastle. It’s like stepping into a Greek Island cafe…. with a lovely view, a distant sea breeze,and the most incredible selections of exotic coffees, teas, hot chocolates… and Cakes! You have to try the Cakes! And the soup! Definitely the soup! I’ve included a pic of the hot chocolate with spices and the oat milk matcha. Can’t say enough good things… just come and try everything!

So glad we found it. It's up on the 3rd floor but does have a lift as is wheelchair accessible. I was looking for somewhere near Haymarket metro station that works ld do vegan food and this cafe came up first. There's a reason most reviews have a 5*. The atmosphere was buzzing when we walked in, the owner gave us a friendly smile and explained what was available and we had a choice to sit in the first part of the cafe or further in where there are plenty of window seats to watch the world go by. In a new place I always try a black coffee first which was perfectly poured, we also got a traditional orchid/nut based drink and homemade soup. There were other vegan options on the menu too. This is defo a place il be visiting again as the food is authentic, delicious and welcoming

Perfect! A small piece of Greece in the center of Newcastle!

I don't do reviews online often, or ever really. However, I'm absolutely enamoured with Meli Cafe. As a fellow Balkan person I find the flavours reminding me of the wonderfully Greek cuisine that I've grown around, with regional twists. The chef de patron does it an absolute justice! I came for the first time today and I saw that he had Greek coffee on the menu, more about that in a minute. I spoke with him and asked if he had spanakopita in, he, sadly didn't, but what he had was arguably even better! He had made a wonderful focaccia with all these wonderful flavours that I was craving, it was as light as a cloud, yet bursting with flavours so expertly and delicately balanced that I dare say he could give some top chefs a run for their money! As for the coffee, it's gorgeous, it's more of a medium body leaning towards a lighter flavour, but that's how I actually prefer my coffee. It was beautiful and well balanced with light notes of fruits, but that's to be expected of a medium-light roast! Simply put if you want to taste an excellent take on an authentic modern Greek cuisine or even a traditional one, whenever the dishes decide to appear as guests, please come and visit, plus you'll be supporting a lovely, home owned business - what's better than that?!

Meli Cafe has become one of our favourite coffee places! It's cozy and quiet - with nice subtle music in the background. The owner and the rest of the stuff are always very friendly and welcoming. There are some spots with a nice view as well. We've tried many of the treats, like the scones and the different cakes and they were always so tasty, fresh and above all homemade. I would really encourage you to try all the different types of food it has to offer and different coffee varieties, like the Greek one. It also offers loyalty cards for drinks. It's a very good choice for vegeterians/vegans!

Lovely food (most of which is freshly made) and drink. Excellent service, with friendly staff. Highly recommended. Cafe has good views of Newcastle. Seating is comfortable. Well worth the climb up the stairs (or you can use the lift).

Excellent customer service. Loved the strong Greek coffee. There were 9 of us so service took a while but it was a busy Saturday lunchtime so understandable. Would definitely return.

Delicious food, fantastic drinks

Such a cozy place with a nice view! It is quite, which makes it suitable for studying/work or reading a book. The staff is so friendly and helpful! The dessert that I ordered, Clementine and Almond cake, reminds me of Portokalopita 🍊 But not that sweet and without that much syrup, which hits the spot! 🥰 Definateltly recommend the place!

Love this place! Just watched the sunset and the view is beautiful (if you have the right table). Bit cold though…they could turn up the heat a bit. And the coffee is delicious! Really good, but pricy, but worth it. Staff also so friendly, he cleaned up every time I changed tables for the best view, which was a lot haha.

Not a huge choice of food but the paninis were freshly made and very tasty. Coffee really good too. Friendly staff. Toilet needs some attention.

Great coffee menu, including varieties of Greek coffee. Lovely food including soup, panini, quiche and cakes all made on the premises. Cafe is on the 3rd floor with great views and there is a lift.

Food and service was excellent and the guy made allowances for my girlfriends order to accommodate her off menu request. A tad slow on the service but apart from that we will be back.

I just love this place. The owner is absolutely amazing and is a wonderful person. The food is amazing and I can't place one fault in it. I never finish the salads but this place I request salads as they are so amazing. The cakes are homemade and delicious. Visit this place for an amazing time.

Hot chocolate was disappointing. Tasted of just milk, and was luke warm at best. And fairly over priced.

Excellent type of food, as this coffee shop supports fully vegans (also gluten free) by creating such products. Not only that, both food and coffee have wonderful flavours. The environment makes you want to relax and enjoy your time. Amazing place, amazing owner.

I stumbled across this place by accident. So pleased I did. Fantastic coffee and abundance and choice of cakes. It is nice to see smaller places are still available in the town centre. Instead of all the soulless large chain coffee shops which blight are town and cities.

Mi compañero había estado en el café cuando era Whistler Cafe y llamamos porque estábamos desesperados por una taza de té. Subí las escaleras, cuatro pisos. Hay un ascensor. Pedimos té, pastel de clementina y bollo de manzana y queso cheddar. El té se sirvió con un poco de batido de leche. Obtienes dos tazas de la tetera. El pastel y el bollo estaban deliciosos. Hicimos lo de siempre y cortamos cada uno en dos. El pastel estaba muy húmedo y el bollo se había calentado y estaba blando. Ambos fueron encantadores y volveremos. Se lo recomendaría a cualquiera que quiera una comida ligera.

Interesting varieties of great coffee and an extremely friendly and accommodative host. He made us all feel very welcomed and our table was cleaned promptly. I loved the vibe of the place, it was very laid back and great for us to work in. I love mochas and theirs was good, however I would have preferred it a little bit warmer. Maybe next time I will let him know. The cake was great too. In summary, it's rare to go to a cafe where you feel so relaxed and simply just enjoy coffee so we will definitely be going there again.

Nice venue but the food was pretty tasteless and over priced. Paid £15 for two teas and two small paninis without any sides.

Conveniently located really close to the university, I sometimes come here when I just want a cup of tea when I'm feeling anxious and don't feel like walking very far. Nice to watch people go by and see some pigeons. Much better than any chain, support local business! At the top of three flights of stairs but there's a lift for people in wheelchairs.

Descubrí esta pequeña joya escondida recientemente, escondida en el tercer piso de un edificio junto a la calle Northumberland. No teníamos comida pero se veía genial y todo casero. Gran selección de bebidas y una delicia para encontrar té griego de montaña. El dueño era extremadamente amable y acogedor, así que volveremos y la próxima vez probaré la comida. Siempre estoy feliz cuando encuentro algo diferente de las cadenas estándar habituales.

Vale la pena buscar este café del segundo piso. No te preocupes: ¡hay un buen ascensor! Hay comida casera, como un pan de espinacas realmente delicioso hecho con queso feta, aceitunas y hierbas y ensalada opcional (4.60 / 6). Tuve una bebida llamada Sahlab que se describió como leche, raíz de orquídea, nueces mixtas y coco. Esto fue increíble y completamente diferente de cualquier otra cosa que había probado. Chef / propietario genuino y amable.

Went for lunch as it's near where I work. Great food, good service and good prices mean that it's one not to be missed.
