Loved this pub, amazing food and good people. There are only two pubs here and we felt safe there as we do not go out in Burnham town as it’s too dangerous. So yes we where all sad when they shut down, to only sell it and now are applying to change it into a place of religious practice but there are no locals here that practice religion so it’s a bit odd. Anyways we will miss you Jolly Woodman.

Asked for a ten bird roast but shockingly served a 9 bird roast! Alistair was particularly wounded up but then the host stopped mid way through his speech making such class jives as ‘is this what they teach you in boarding school’ so naturally the chaps got a little riled up and had to redecorate the private room with blood of the owner and smashed crockery. all in all excellent waitress but bad no prozzer policy. Would not recommend for club dinners.

I visited for lunch today with my Mum, having been back in July and had lovely food and a warm welcome. Disappointingly today the menu has changed completely, I had looked at the menu online and it had changed from what it was in July but was still very nice and also had choices of standard portions or a smaller portion which would have been great for my Mum. Unfortunately when we arrived and looked at the menu it was completely different to the menu online and in all honesty not what we were expecting and not really what we were looking for. Not sure if it’s been taken over since we were last there or has a new chef but why they’ve changed the menu to what it is now god only knows. The person showing us the menus explained that they’d just changed them when I said it was different to what they have online and immediately offered us ham, eggs, chips and mushy peas or scampi and chips, we chose the ham, eggs, chips and mushy peas at £13.50 and the portion sizes were very good and the meals were very nice. We did notice that the majority of people were also ordering the same as us or the scampi rather than meals off of the new menu. The customers that the pub attracts are walkers/hikers, people with their dogs, families, workers, locals, groups of friends and I think the new menu is just not what people are expecting or going to the Jolly Woodman for at all. It’s a good old country pub and the menu needs to reflect that. I say this as someone who’s been visiting the pub with friends and family for over 50 years.

I visited the Jolly Woodman early on Saturday evening with my elderly Mum, we used to visit the pub as a family many years ago, I’ve been in there about 4 years ago but my Mum probably hadn’t been for over 35 years so it brought back lovely memories for her. The barmaid was also serving the food and was lovely, making a nice pot of tea for my Mum, we had scampi, chips and peas with tartare sauce and the ploughmans which was really tasty and presented very well on a wooden board. I made the mistake of ordering a side of fries but ended up leaving half of them and half of the bread as the ploughmans was really filling. I’d definitely go back to the pub again when I visit my Mum in the future.

I went in to this lovely pub with my boss for a spot of lunch in between meetings and was met by Eddy the landlord and his daughter Kayleigh the barmaid who welcomed us with open arms. I had a lovely pint of Grolsch and my boss had a glass of wine and I ordered a pizza which was recommended, classed as “Eduardos Pizza”, whilst my boss had a steak. Presentation was superb and service was fantastic, and my god what a pizza! If you want a good fresh pizza, forget going to pizza express. This was absolutely sublime! But for me it wasn’t just the food, it was the service that made it brilliant. Would recommend this lovely quaint pub to anyone. Hopefully we have more meetings in and around the area so we can enjoy some more great food.

I had lunch at this restaurant today with my relatives from London. It is the second time we have had lunch there and because we were so impressed the first time we booked for lunch again today. My relatives traveled from the other side of London to come here because The Jolly Woodman is in such a beautiful setting. But the food is the best I have ever had in a pub or restaurant before. The helpings are huge and the waitress was amazing she could not have been more helpful. I hope the restaurant appreciates her. We were then given a menu with very limited choice, not as voucher details, shown online. Not happy and did complain and was given the correct menu choices. The starters were excellent, especially the scotch egg. Quite enjoyed the main courses and good portions. A cosy looking pub, but a friendlier welcome would have improved our visit. Nice pub, cosy feel to the place. Nice Friendly professional greeting . Food was very poor and had to send my pork belly back as it was so bad, was given another meal of fish and chip, which was bland and underwhelming for £15 , or there about. I think this place is under new management and maybe the new owners are getting to grip with things, but to keep returning customers, the food has to get a lot better, because it really not that great. I did not have to pay for the meal or the replacement meal. I didn’t have the heart to say the second meal was just as bad, because the staff were so friendly.I wish them all the best , it’s a great location, Cosy warm pub with nice staff, just get a decent cook.

We’ve often visited the Jolly Woodman for drinks and meals over the years, being that it’s in such a nice rural location not too far from where we live. We’ve been more recently (since it reopened under new management), and haven’t experienced any real problems. But today was different, and sadly, seemed to highlight the awful decline that other reviewers have mentioned. We arrived just after opening (with another small party of people in front of us), and the pub was almost completely empty. We planned to do a nice walk to Burnham Beeches and back, and this seemed like the perfect place to start with a drink. They were a bit slow to acknowledge our us, but the girl who did eventually serve us was friendly, polite and professional. We noticed that nearly every table was set for lunch, so asked her if there was somewhere we could sit to have our drinks that didn’t impinge on the forthcoming diners. She pointed out a table that was free till 3pm, so we settled down there. But, about 20 mins later, the bar manager rudely told us we had to move as our table was booked by a party who had just arrived! No apology, no ‘please’ - just a very curt bark that we had to move, and right now.So we stood there with our drinks as we made way for these diners, and she marched off! We then had to approach her for ask where we COULD seat, and she waved us to another table - again, with no acknowledgment that we had been inconvenienced and were paying customers, or any form of apology.Well, we finished our drinks quickly (I’m sure she was pleased we were leaving), and left. After we finished our walk, we had another drink at a pub a few minutes’ walk away, where we were treated respectively and had a lovely warm welcome, and customers seemed to be really enjoying themselves and the hospitality.I’ve visited hundreds of pubs and restaurants in my life, but never experienced such a rude and unprofessional ‘manager’ as this. This place is an absolute joke - I doubt very much we will ever visit again, and would urge everyone else to do the same. There are much better (and friendlier) places available nearby, and I really don’t see anyone would waste their time at this depressing hole. The manager needs to learn some basic customer service skills very soon - she really hasn’t got a clue.Very disappointed ex-customers.

Service is excellent as is the decor and ambience. However, we were guided to the Christmas menu with enthusiasm. I had the Camambert and Cranberry Sauce as a starter. This was three large pieces of Camembert which had a deep fried coating and accompanying side salad at £7. The cheese poured out as a watery liquid which was odd. My main was leak and chicken pie. Unfortunately this was virtually all pie and very little filling which is at £ 16 is rather a lot. My wife had a liver pate which she liked. She had a small lamb joint which she liked but at £ 18 seems a bit steep. The vegetables were fine. With two small glasses of Merlot the bill came to £ 51 without service. There is a lot of choice around Beaconsfield and Amersham at these prices in proper restaurants.

Not our first bad experience at this pub. Service is atrocious!! Arrived late afternoon, it was not busy. We waited more than 5 minutes to be seated despite being walked past numerous times by at least 2 staff members. We were seated, but had to wait a long time before receiving any menus. We had a baby with us and had to ask for a high chair 4 times! Even though the assistant manager had seen us struggling. Everything seemed like it was too much trouble. We received our drinks. And ordered food. One of the orders was from the starter menu but we requested for it to be brought out with the other food. The assistant manager took our order. And repeated that we wanted all the food to be brought out together. This did not happen. Soup was brought out on its own. No other food was brought out. They did not even come to check on us or collect the plate. Our baby was getting restless so we decided to settle the bill (without eating anything) as we were so disappointed with the awful service. We were still faced with a full price bill which we quickly disputed with the lady behind the bar, who went to speak to Mandy who is the assistant manager. She stayed behind the scenes and did not apologise. We are highly disappointed by the rubbish service and lack of social skills. We weren't the only ones to comment on the bad service as we spoke to other customers before leaving.

We live local and have visited this pub on several occasions now this year, the location is good and tha car parking is plentiful, the building itself is also very nice and we have enjoyed 3 or 4 lovely summer afternoons drinking and eating what has to be described as very good food on the nice relaxed seating area at the fron of the building, all good then you may thin? and to be honest so did we. That is until we visited for the first time in the evening on Friday night, we parked easily as it was @ 19:00hrs so not a busy time for a foodie pub, but the atmosphere on enetering was dismal, a couple of tables with early diners and just 3 other people drinking at the bar area, when we approcahed the bar there was absolutley zero welcome form the young girl behind the bar and we counted at least 2 other staff members generaly walking back and forth seemingly not doing much behind the bar. So happy to wait a few minutes, no big deal....but the few minutes turned into 15 mins as the extremley slow and completeley dour faced youbg girlk behind the bar pulled 2 pints and a lemonade, and the other guy behind the bar who must have passed us 3 times was equally dis-interested in serving us, maybe the Woodman thinks its a restraunt and that serving drinks is a chore and offers little margin? Suffice to stay we eventually got our drinks and I immediatley paid as we had no intention for staying for another, all due to the bar and waiting staff who all looked like they would rather be anywhere else than there and the effect certainly rubbed off on us as we couldnt wait to get out either, not one smile from any of them, front of house is the key in this business! I know, Iv'e been doiung it for over 30years, and these guys and girls are distincltly lacking any front of house skills. It is such a shame becuase I would love to give this review the full 5 stars beacuse as I say we have had 3 or 4 very nice afternoons in the sun, maybe thats the best suggestion I could give you all........ if you want to visit this place pick a sunny day in the afternond and enjoy lunch outside with a drink or two its great...but be warned, go after dark and its like zombie waiting and servinfg staff...maybe thet need to get out in the sun more...although I have the distinct feeling after seeing them in there on Friday night they would possibly burst into flames if they left the dark and entered the light

We ate steak - cooked perfectly, fish and chips - delicious and chicken balti - spicy, meaty and warming. Just what we all wanted on a Friday night for supper. Then puddings for us each. We sat inside, which has been sectioned so not noisy, but inviting and the decor is tastefully updated but still retaining character of the old place. All the tables had been laid for dinner and it was comfortable, clean and nicely lit. Outside in the garden area, it was still light when we left and this is a nice place to eat too. Sometimes there is live music but tonight it was quiet with people just enjoying a supper where we could hear each other comfortably. The service was perfect, unobtrusive and we didn't have a long wait for our meals. This was our second visit and we will come again. thanks

Really nice patio area out front plus a garden with further tables outside at the back. Dog friendly and plenty of parking, this is an ideal place for locals but also any travellers wanting a more enjoyable pit stop given it’s only 5 minutes from junction 2 of the M40 (Beaconsfield Services) and easy to find. It’s a really good old British country pub in a beautiful rural location (backs onto the famous Burnham Beeches of Harry Potter fame amongst many other films) with excellent Wi Fi for the kids but similarly a great choice for business meetings too.

Just spent a delightful evening at this lovely pub. Being a Tuesday evening it was quiet, but the staff were very attentive, the food beautifully presented and tasted good. The chips in particular were piping hot, crisp on the outside and fluffy in the middle. Will definitely be coming back.

We haven’t visited this pub for quite a few years due to the previous visit and the food being well under par. Thanks to Groupon we decided to give it another go and I’m glad we did. Firstly the lovely young lady who served us was very friendly and informative, a real credit to the place. The food was amazing. We had the black pudding and prawn cocktail for starters, both delicious then lasagne and fish and chips for main. Couldn’t fault it. We almost felt bad for using a Groupon and not paying full price it was so good. The chef came out to check all was ok, which of course it was. We will definitely be back! Thank you!

Having abandoned The Feathers nearby as they only had one chef on, we set off into Burnham Beeches and stumbled across The Jolly Woodman and so decided to give it a try. We were not disappointed - it's a lovely pub with friendly staff, and the food (lasagne; and hunter's chicken Spanish style) was a generous portion and absolutely delicious. The chocolate fudge cake with tea and coffee rounded off a great visit. Would thoroughly recommend this pub for food and will return at a later date.

Have visited several times over recent months as the location is convenient for us. Has the makings of a great pub, large, good food and good garden but find its’ offering to be inconsistent. Staff can be on the grumpy side and they seem to decide to close on a whim and contrary to advertised opening hours. Always feel like they’re waiting for you to leave!

We stopped here as a mid-sized family group of 9 (including 3 children) on a Sunday afternoon. It was sunny so we decided to sit outside, although the tables could've done with a quick wipe over as they weren't clean. The pub is pretty, although you are essentially sitting in a car park outside this pub. The menu was ok, it was not huge so we weren't really spoilt for choice. Several of our party ordered the lasagne, which was very good indeed. One member was disappointed to have ordered a starter, then after paying for it, our waitress came to the table to tell us they had run out - ideally it would be nice to be told this at the time of ordering - disappointing, because it would have changed the main course order, but having already placed our order there wasn't time/opportunity to re-visit the menu. The overall group opinion was that the burgers and lasagne were very nice indeed, the scampi had all the appeal of a child's meal and the menu wasn't mind blowing - there weren't lots of things to tempt us. We won't avoid going here again, but we can probably think of other places to eat instead.

Popped in on the off chance and were lucky to get a table. Great service, all the staff were lovely and the food was fabulous! Hard to find anywhere in Berkshire that does a decent roast these days but this place has nailed it. Being a veggie I was delighted to see the stuffed mushroom option on the roast menu and it was delicious. Complete with a great selection of veggies! My first time here today, had a lovely meal with friends and will definitely be returning soon! Thank you :-)

Visited here for lunch the other week and was so impressed, the food was lovely, the portions are fab. We had a lovely girl ( I think her name was keilee I may be wrong) BEAUTIFUL beautiful face you couldn’t miss her! I’ve never had a nicer waitress, so smiley and friendly, went above and beyond to make our experience great. It’s rare to find that nowadays! She is a real little star, and a credit to the pub.

First time visit but will probably be our last. Arrived recently with four friends for lunch to be told no record of our booking! An omen! We were visiting with Travelzoo vouchers but such a let down with the food. If we had been paying full price for two courses then we would have complained. The food was pretty basic but pricey too. Not at all inspiring and obviously the pub was lacking in staff. An old world pub with character but perhaps playing on this to justify its food prices. Such a shame.

I have been eating at The Jolly Woodman for many years on and off. My last couple of visits have prompted this review. To be completely fair, the food has always been good and the new management have certainly continued with that. It has always been tasty and hot. The new menu is attractive and has good choice. There is one thing letting this 'country pub' down now and that is the cosy warmth of a fire (real or otherwise). When we have visited the last couple of times with snow and ice on the ground, it was chilly inside and I needed to keep my jacket around my shoulders. In the past there has always been a fire in the log burner or the snug. That seems to have stopped with the change of ownership, which is a crying shame for a country pub. There are many pubs in this beautiful area that can light a fire on a freezing cold day. Come on Jolly Woodman!!

Four of us had lunch here on Monday this week. We hadn’t booked, and certainly at 12.30pm there was plenty of room. The place was warm and inviting on a cold day, with pleasant and efficient service. There was a wide range of draft beers, and the two course lunch menu at £12.95 proved to be excellent value in terms of quality and quantity.

Went for lunch today and had booked a table for 1-30pm, we arrived bang on time. The pub was warm and welcoming and there were a number of diners. Ordered drinks that were served in good time and at the same time ordered both our starters and main course. We were told there would be a slight delay with the food but we were ok with that. However, after an hour and having ordered another drink we queried where our food was. Had an effusive apology and told that our starter was on its way. It arrived 10 minutes later. The food on the whole was good, the service dreadful. Will not be returning.

Top place for a carvery. We come here frequently. Staff are really lovely and it's a nice atmosphere, unlimited soft drinks are well worth it. Lots on offer but be careful booking a table late in the evening as there's a higher chance they'll run out of meat. Heartbroken you've taken the dauphinoise potato/hot pot dish off the carvery. Please bring it back! My only complaint is needing to get the drinks on the table a bit quicker. We're often still waiting for them after having already started our meals. Lots of discounts and deals available if you sign up to their mailing list or download the app so that's worth doing too.

We come here quite often, for special occasions, birthdays etc. Today, I had quite literally one of the best steaks, I've ever had. Period. The chef deserves a massive raise! It was cooked perfectly. Starters (calamari, koftas and camebert) and drinks all came out hot, promptly and were all scrumptious! Mains (steaks, chicken supreme tagliatelle, pie and burger) were all fantastic! So stuffed, couldn't manage dessert, but thank you so much! Hats off, Palmers Arms has done it again!!
