The Huntsman Inn in Kirklees

We recently enjoyed a fantastic two-night stay at The Huntsman Inn, beautifully situated in Holmfirth. We were made to feel welcome and comfortable from the moment we arrived. Our experience was made even better by the delicious food on offer. Both our suppers and breakfasts were scrumptious. Between us, we had the steak, burger, the full English and my favourite, the Arnold Bennett omelette. The quality of the ingredients was evident, and the dishes were cooked to perfection. The owners, Katie and Sal, and their entire team were warm, friendly, and incredibly helpful. Nothing was too much trouble, and their genuine hospitality made our stay memorable. In addition to the wonderful food and service, we also had the pleasure of attending an event at the Inn, which was well-organised and great fun. If you're looking for a comfortable and welcoming place to stay in Holmfirth with delicious food, outstanding service, and incredible views, look no further than The Huntsman Inn.

Overall it’s a very nice place in a great location. Food: I had the Steak and ale pie, which was fantastic and a good sized portion. I was with my Father who had the Bacon chop, again it was apparently very tasty and a good portion size. Staff: All were very welcoming and polite, our server was friendly and attentive, listened carefully to our order and was very accommodating to a few requests. Atmosphere: Very comfortable and relaxed, for what we wanted it was perfect, we didn’t want a rushed meal with people fussing over us every 30 seconds - it’s a country pub, not a busy city centre restaurant, so the timing of the service was good for us. There was a couple who sat down just before us who seemed intent on complaining before they started and causing as much disruption as possible. I’ve worked a lot around the hospitality sector so I wasn’t surprised when the person in question started to complain loudly and lay it on thick (it wasn’t an Oscar worthy performance). Now I mean no disrespect to the diner in question, things don’t always go smoothly and misunderstandings can happen, but it is never acceptable to be personally abusive towards a member of staff.

Well how disappointing our visit to the new revamped huntsman. We went lunch today 3 grandmas 3 daughters and 3 grandchildren all very good friends. The place looks lovely after its renovations, however the food was a disappointment. The chips were bitty, the cheese n onion pie looked like it had been in the oven after it had been sliced and dry, the sage chicken was also very dry and over cooked but the fish melody was on a different level, the muscles only had shells with only 2 out of the 5 having a small muscle in, the prawns 🍤 wouldn’t come out of the shells and when asked for a finger bowl the waitress only brought a temped bowl of water, after we explained that a finger bowl usually comes with lemon slice to get rid of the Grease the young lass didn’t know and was told to just take a bowl of warm water out…. We were then asked if we wanted another melody but the prawns will possibly be the same so obviously we said no thanks. The waitress then clearly said the manager will knock that meal off the bill but when the bill came only 20% had been deducted. We then said that they said they would take off the meal and the young waitress argued no I didnt( she did) so I asked to speak to the manager and then she came back with a new bill with the meal knocked off but not the 20% which is what it is but really!!!! The manager never came to speak to us which I find hugely disappointing and very unprofessional. Come on Huntsman, JW Lees you have got a lovely restaurant now all been done up lovely but train your chef and staff a little better. The waitress was pleasant enough but didn’t in my opinion have enough in-house training.

We were holidaying in the region and decided to go here for our last lunch before returning home after a fantastic few days away. First impressions were good, it's a lovely place with good variety of very nice beers on offer. The menu was reasonably priced and had some interesting options, which made a nice change from the usual "pub" fayre. Our order was taken and all seemed well, so we made a start on our drinks and talked about what a lovely end to our holiday this was going to be. Then it started to go wrong . . . We ordered 2 courses each, it took a long while for the first course to arrive (we'd all run out of drinks before they arrived) and one of the orders was completely wrong. The server seemed a bit miffed saying "well this is what was on the ticket", well the ticket must be wrong then, we definitely did not order that. So away it went while the rest of us started our meals. The correct main course did arrive in due course. We then sat with a table full of empty plates (and glasses) for a good 45 minutes. In the end one of our party went to the bar to ask someone to come and clear the table and serve our pre-ordered deserts. About 10 mins later the table was (partly) cleared, finally being completely cleared another 10 minutes after that. We then sat with an empty table for another 30+ minutes waiting for the deserts to arrive. Again, we went to the bar to see where they were and explained that if they were not there within the next 10 minutes we would just pay for the one course we had actually received and leave as we had other things to do with our afternoon. Just as we were getting up to leave, the deserts arrived. Again, the server seemed miffed as we explained that we were just about to leave beause we had been waiting so long "do you want these deserts then or what?" We decided to eat them, then swiftly went to the bar to pay. We'd been there over 2 hours for a simple 2 course lunch and even then had to chase them up twice. There was no offer of any type of goodwill gesture at all and nobody seemed to care that we had such a poor experience. The place was pleasantly busy, but I dread to think how/if they cope with a busy evening or weekend service. It really is a shame as the food was lovely when it did arrive and could have been the perfect end to our holiday.

Visited for Sunday lunch. Possibly the worst roast beef ever, full of fat and sinew & unable to cut it. Cauliflower cheese as an extra at £4.95, 3 florets in an insipid watery sauce which hadn’t even been browned on top. Veg for 2 was ok if you were a 7 yr old, no where near enough for two. Needless to say I sent it back as inedible and didn’t bother ordering anything else. Excuse was they’d changed suppliers and even the chef was disappointed with the beef they said!!! But thought it ok to serve at £18, disgraceful. One of our group had crumble for dessert, 3 mouthfuls served in a ramekin dish for nearly £8. Terrible experience and wouldn’t go back if it was free. No apology was offered by any member of staff, just said ok we’ll knock the beef off the bill.

A really good venue for a 21st birthday party. Attended 9th November. Stayed overnight. Room nice view over the valley and very clean. From Reception to bar staff everything was brilliant. Had a bar snack when we arrived food hot and good. The breakfast was very good what more to say about the Huntsman. Highly recommend a stay or call in and enjoy the food. Definitely be back.

For the second year running, went for a meal on Saturday evening (just before bonfire night) with our dog. Chose the Huntsman because it is "out of the way" and unlikely to be bothered by fireworks. Last year, the meal was excellent. This year, less so. Being celiac, I chose gluten free fish & chips. Last year, it was excellent. This year, when it came, it was just batter - no fish whatsoever. How can this happen? The second piece came, which was Ok, but was quite small. I ordered the "large" fish, priced at £17.45. I dread to think how small the "small" portion would be. A big change on last year. Other meals ordered were no better than OK. We ended with a small dessert with a hot drink. The sticky toffee pudding was very small and very dry. Not sure why things were so different? Change of chef? Cost cutting? Not sure if we'd come again.

Great location and friendly staff. We stayed in a suite to the rear. Quiet and spotlessly clean . We were looking for somewhere to stay on the way back from visiting family in Yorkshire. This was ideal. Had a drink in the bar and then dinner in the restaurant. Cosy atmosphere even though it is quite a big venue. Ben was on duty on both days. Great sense of humour and joined in with the banter. Would definitely stay again.

Called in with my campervan free the stop in the car park. Had an evening with dinner the food was great the staff were very friendly that happy with the service had food had breakfast. I will definitely go back.

The food was excellent in every way. Steak cooked perfectly. Chips gorgeous. The service was efficient and the food was served quickly. We had a lovely corner table as requested. I was a little sceptical as some negative reviews, but for us it was perfect. We will definitely go again, hopefully soon!! 🤩

We went for Sunday roast as it was recommended to us as a good option. The beef was hard and difficult to chew, potatoes cold and some of them old. Gravy was a granules job. Overpriced for what it was. Deserts were not better. I ordered crem brûlée with Baileys ice cream. Got vanilla ice cream with no explanation. So I was eating cold thick custard with same taste ice cream. Very stupid combination. While I like the building and atmosphere food was simply not worth the money I paid. Don’t think we will make that effort again.

Food was absolutly disgusting and the staff are clueless. One waiter very odd looking just minces around with his nose stuck in the air banging utensils on the tables and the chef came out the kitchen he looked like a right scruff

We stop over in Holmfirth and have stopped here on the last 2 occasions. Cosy rooms, nice bar and lovely staff. One of those places I’d love to get snowed in!

My step-son got married at The Huntsman Inn on 08.08.24. I've been honoured to help couple with the venue decoration, which was very exciting but on the other hand really scary. I wanted to make sure their wedding day was unforgettable and venue decor is a big part of the whole picture. I have to say a huge thanks to Katie - Events Manager for helping me with the whole process. She was absolutely amazing! We prepared most of the decor the night before the wedding, but there were few things to complete on the they of the wedding. As you can imagine, hair appointment, makeup etc got in a way. Katie stepped in, asked me what my vision is, took the rest of the decor and absolutely elevated the function room into a beautiful wedding venue! She came up with such a beautiful ideas , little touches, which made a huge difference! And she went beyond the decor, she helped me fix my hair for the evening and she took pictures of the most beautiful moments for us as well, which is absolutely priceless!! I have to say huge thanks to all staff at The Huntsman Inn, they all put so much effort into what they were doing. Salvatore - General Manager - I met him first, he allowed me to come to see the function room on very short notice, was very accommodating, answered all questions I had and passed me on to lovely Katie. Vicky - the girl who dressed the chairs - she's done marvellous job of it and she did it with a smile on her face 🙂 Cat and Charlotte - girls serving us with breakfast, both very kind and friendly. I loved Charlotte's waist coat, she was looking smart, she was funny, took us pictures as well, set me off for the day! Mike - DJ - he absolutely rocked our world on that dance floor! He read the room and put on the music which got everyone of their seats! I loved the screen with videos in the wall as well! Didn't expect that - it felt like I'm in a club house 😁 Thanks to all staff at the bar, in the kitchen, and lets not forget cleaning staff! They all did their part and made my experience the one to remember and I'm pretty sure all family was having a great time at the wedding. I would definitely recommend The Huntsman Inn as a great venue for the wedding.

Deeply disappointed. One hour wait to receive 7 meals, six of which where totally inedible. Manager apologised and we were not charged for them. A family reunion totally ruined

Really good lunch for four of us. Two menus - one full menu and the other a lunch menu - we opted for the lunch menu which included two or three dishes. Main courses were excellent and so were the puds. Really nice staff - particularly the lady in charge. Couldn't ask for more from a lunch experience.

Had my son and daughter-in -law kirtsy and bens wedding on Friday the 14th of June. What can I say it was absolutely fantastic from start to finish katie the events manager was fantastic everything was perfection from Planning and and organising. Everybody had the best day ever and didn't want it to end. Thankyou katy for the perfect day xxx😘 love Anne Marie.

The venue is large and full of character, clean and well maintained including bathrooms. Staff were polite,pleasant if a little run off their feet as there catering for 90 guests. Food came in good time however... The pate was full of flavour and a generous serving. The roast beef was really tender, two large slices... As for the veg.. al dente is not raw. The roast potatoes I had to ask what they were as they were so anemic.. I have never seen half a large carrot sliced length ways served on a plate before , this was also hard as was the broccoli. Yorkshire puddings were fabulous! Large, light and crispy. The chocolate brownie was served warm with ice cream, really tasty. Yes I would go again.

Had a Sunday lunch, 3 very very small roast potatoes that took some finding, no mash, missing the accompaniments that should have been there ,plenty veg, but for the money..... Don't think we will be in a rush to return. Couldn't fault the service or staff.

Arrived early and was quickly shown to our table...our waiter took our drinks order then brought a sunday menu .. we ordered the sharer sunday lunch...waiter came back and asked if we.d like pigs in blankets with our lunch and how many we said 2 portions...(i thought they came with our order but hey) Our food arrived quite quickly and i was right pigs in blankets where included so why ask us if we wanted more... Roast potatoes..not roast.. Savoy cabbage warm but raw. Shed loads of pigs in blankets...needing crisping up.. Tastless gravy Under cooked cauliflower in a thin watery cheese sauce..nicely cooked red cabbage and swede and carrot mash... Nice sized yorkshire..kept warm so dried out.everything needed seasoning..lots of shouting loud tables near us...asked for the bill and charged £9 for extra pigs in blanket we didnt need.... Nice place....lots of food but needs a bit care and seasoning to make it better .. regarding our waiter well the extra £9 for food we didnt need was annoying ... oh and please supply serving spoon/ with your food

great homely pub with a high quality well proportioned traditional dishes which the family of 6 all enjoyed . great local beers and quality reasonably priced wine per bottle. The dining room was busy and had a buzz to it . booking was easy . many thanks

Enjoyed a one night stay here in our campervan with 4 friends also in their vans . It has a really big level carpark with grass area for big vans and is on a fairly quiet road ,pub opens for breakfasts at 8am. We all had an evening meal in the pub, decent size portions ,tasty food and really good service from the very efficient and knowledgeable waiter ,reading previous negative reviews it sounds like they have struggled to get staff which is pretty much the same as all uk hospitality ,not their fault, but last night they had an excellent team and even though they had a large group event in the function room we weren't neglected and have no complaints .Its a great location for visiting Holmfirth or doing local walks ,we were able to do a lovely walk from there down to Digley Reservoir .We don't have a dog but dogs were welcome . We will definitely be back .

An excellent inn for an overnight stay the staff were very friendly offering a good service and a very good breakfast. Room was very comfortable aswell

We arrived and there was a friendly buzz around the pub and we looked forward to pleasant Sunday lunch. Fast forward nearly two hours and we were still waiting for our main meal. The service was disorganised and chaotic. With nobody seemingly occupying a role of any authority or expertise. We eventually asked for the bill and left.

Just had a fantastic stop over at the Huntsman. Having walked around Dovestone we arrived at the Huntsman hungry and thirsty. Our room was clean and very comfortable,with a very powerful shower,bliss! We were on the Wine,Dine and Duvet deal,for details,go to their website. We ordered a couple of roast dinners,they were delicious and plentiful. The drink selection was extensive and reasonably priced. All the staff were friendly and helpful,nothing was too much trouble. After a very comfortable night's sleep,we enjoyed a tasty and freshly cooked full English breakfast. This definitely set us up for the day👍🏻. Check out was smooth and efficient. Would definitely recommend the Huntsman,the overall experience is very enjoyable.

We had the pleasure of staying for 2 nights including breakfast and we did a Sunday meal. All were exceptional. Very welcoming. Rooms were beautiful and very well set out and clean. We had a family room and double for our son and his girlfriend, very impressed and would highly recommend.

Went for lunch - there was 6 of us and two (fairly well behaved) dogs. Food and service were good and we were happy with everything.

We had a great 2 night stay at The Huntsman Inn. We had dinner both nights and were very impressed with the quality and value of the meals.

We have been to The Huntsman many times for meals, with family, friends and for special celebrations. Sadly and very disappointingly the food served has got much poorer over our last 3 or 4 visits. Prices have increased understandably, but cutting corners on the quality, quantity and presentation of meals is unacceptable. Piling high a roast dinner with a huge Yorkshire pudding balanced on the top, on a far too small a plate does not make the meal look a decent or bigger size, it just spoiled the whole meal experience! It was a fight to actually find the meat, veg and roast potatoes under the ridiculously over sized Yorkshire pudding without spilling half the food onto the table! Bottomless gravy?? We had to ask for it, and nothing asked for throughout the evening arrived in a timely fashion. Busy yes we realise that, but maybe you should actually not book as many people in at the same time if you can't cope with providing a decent service? The turkey was nice but the roast beef was virtually uneatable and even had to ask for a steak knife to cut it! Then to top it off the desserts are outrageously priced for the portion received, which arrived just plonked on a large plate with complete disregard to presentation. I'm sorry to say as this now appears to be the normal standard offered there are plenty of alternatives nearby. On the positive side we have always found all staff polite and friendly, and the place is well kept and clean. What should have been a pleasant evening out, ended up being a very disappointing experience.

Was driving past yesterday (Sunday afternoon) and decided to stop for Sunday lunch. What a mistake. The place was really crowded and in fairness they did provide a table without a reservation, on the basis that we would vacate it within 90 minutes. It then took 15 minutes to take the drinks order and a further 15 minutes for them to arrive! My partner and I both chose a roast lunch. Oddly they arrived almost immediately after ordering, though the meals served were barely warm, suggesting that they are plated well in advance and sitting waiting to be sent out. The Yorkshire pudding was like cardboard and the turkey (which was “processed meat” not carved from the frame) was dry and like rubber. Probably the worst meal I have ever had. As somebody has commented the staff are very inexperienced and are evidently not trained to know what to say when a customer answers no to the routine “was everything all right with your meal” question.

Absolutely lovely Sunday dinner. We went for the roast sharer and it did not dissapoint! All the trimmings were included with unlimited gravy and yorkshires! Would have liked the pigs in blankets cooked slightly more if I'm being picky but overall a great roast!

I’m sorry to have to say this but the food was so disappointing, the service was given by inexperienced staff treated everything as a joke. The waiting time for the food was far too long . Will not be eating here again .

We came here to meet friends and enjoy dinner. There was a lovely atmosphere without being too noisy. We met before the time our table was booked for and had a drink in the bar which had a lovely roaring fire. The menu had plenty of choice, my husband chose the steak & ale pie. It was served as a slice of pie and the amount of meat in it was huge. Our table was in a corner and the service wasn't brilliant. We had to ask for a wine list, and when the drivers amongst us needed more drinks we had to find a waitress. The bill was very reasonable, so good value for money. We would be happy to visit again.

Visiting relatives and having lived in the area we were really suprised with this place. Made to feel very welcome, decor is good , seating comfy.The food was really good we had between us soup, black pudding on a crumpet and brewery tower burger. A good, clean hotel, located about twenty minutes outside Huddersfield in Saddleworth Moor. In the middle of winter it can feel very remote and isolated. But with its log fires and efficient central heating it can soon feel very cosy too. It has a very good restaurant serving delicious food. It’s certainly worth staying at if you should find yourself in the area.
