We recently visited the Grey Ox after reopening under new management. As regular customers of the Grey Ox for years, we were slightly disappointed in the changes that have been made. Firstly you notice as you walk in, the lovely leather chairs that were previously placed in front of the open fire have been moved to the side, one of our favourite things to do was come and have a glass of wine in front of the fire after a long dog walk on a Sunday, so I really hope they bring these back for the winter months. Secondly, they have re-painted a lot of the restaurant area which definitely gives it a brighter feel, however I think more care needed to go into new chairs as many of them are incredibly uncomfortable and falling apart and the seams. Next was the food, this was a huge disappointment for both my partner and I. We ordered a sirloin steak, myself medium rare and my partner medium. Neither came cooked correctly and the taste was quite bland. The staff were very friendly but when asked for a wine list I was told there was not one, and when asked what red wine was available I had to go to the bar myself to select as the waitress did not know what was to offer. This pub has so much potential and I hope that the feedback they receive is considered and they can turn this around into a huge success.

Booked a table for my father's birthday. Received confirmation and then reminder hours before booking. When we arrived pub was shut up and in darkness. A passersby stopped to let us know that the pub didn't open on a Monday. Another potential patron also arrived, surprised it wasn't open as it is advertised as so on Google. Disappointing!

Been here a few times and always enjoyed the food and atmosphere. Unfortunately on our 4th time going little disappointed. Our onion bhaji starters were a tad bland and stodgy. Too much gram flour and parts not cooked. My sea bass with potatoes was nice but a lot of olive oil with the pesto dressing. Place itself needs a bit of TLC. Outside kerb appeal diminished by flaking paint on pagoda, planters and woodwork. Inside, leather chairs in dining area are shabby, cobwebs in windows and dining tables very sticky. My wine glass kept sticking to table. Staff still lovely and attentive. This is a lovely country area pub and always great for drinks, especially in summer (lgreat outdoor space). Grey Ox has always been a favourite, just needs a bit of tweaking and then this would be a fantastic local to go to and recommend.

Been a long term customer for over 20 years had lunch today, Saturday 11th May. There were very few customers in at lunchtime yet the service was very poor added to that was the fact they didn’t handle a complaint particularly well. My starter of Crispy beef with Asian Coleslaw was very nice as was my beef sandwich however my wife’s beetroot and truffle risotto was very poor, well below standard. There was no beetroot or truffle just coloured rice. When we complained the waitress said that as we had eaten half of it she could only refund half the price! Not impressed and it’s a poor way to handle a complaint.

This place is a joke. Booked via their on line tool and had confirmation back. Arrived @ 5.50pm for 6.15 booking but door was locked. Waited and watched for opening but never happened. No response to doorbell and direct phone to enquire what was happening got only an ansaphone. Looks from outside like it is struggling a bit. Another car with 4 people in from Leeds in car park at same time who also had booked got fed up of waiting and left just before us.

The lights were on, and no one responded to my calls, or the door. Couldn’t leave a message either. There was also another couple who had booked, elderly and and driven 70 miles from Chorley, they couldn’t get inside either. Very very disappointing. Haven’t even had a phone call or explanation why. Have tried calling today to speak to the manager, but once again NO RESPONSE. Unfortunately won’t be going back again, unless the owner can convince me otherwise. My parents are in their 80’s and it was a treat to take them out. Disastrous!!!!!!

Been several times and enjoyed great food and atmosphere. Also been with dogs and were made very welcome. However I recently had 2 meals booked in 2 weeks with different friends, both had booked so I was looking forward to 2 visits. First visit we sat outside wondering why late opening up, only to find a board saying they'd had a burst pipe so were closed. Nobody had bothered to ring and cancel us. Next visit my sister got a call to "confirm cancellation" - they had decided as we were the only booking that night they would cancel us. Very shabby way to treat customers, don't think I will be going again, it's obviously not what it was.

The last couple of times of going to the Gray Ox has been a huge disappointment. We were hoping that the previous time we ate there was just a bad night they were having so gave them benefit of the doubt.. but, last night once again we found the service was appalling! The food is pretty good but is just completely let down by the haphazard service. You get sat down with a menu at your table and then get completely forgotten! After finally getting our starter and finishing it we were asked did we want another drink with our main. We ordered two more glasses of wine which we got just as we were finishing our meals!! The bill however arrived immediately after asking for it! I do hope it sorts itself out as it’s a lovely pub in a lovely place so should be really good!

It was really quite busy upon arrival and throughout the entire time we were there. Wonderful atmosphere from the moment we walked in to the time we left. The staff were absolutely brilliant, extremely attentive and so friendly and polite. Plenty of staff on duty. I have to say that the waiters and waitresses were amazing. They made the whole experience for me. Very polite and cheerful and made us feel very special, almost like we were the only customers there. Anything we asked for was brought to us almost immediately, they could not do enough for us. The only thing I will say is make sure you do not have anything to eat before you go. The meals are fantastic value for money. You cannot complain when it comes to the amount of food you are presented with. The quality of food is exceptional and presentation is great too. We loved it so much we will be going again next week. Thank you so much to all the staff. We thoroughly enjoyed our evening.

We booked to go to the grey ox on the 12th Feb as an early valentines treat. I had bought a groupon voucher in Dec and made the booking on groupon when I purchased the voucher. On arriving at the restaurant we were met at the door by a man asking, abruptly, if he could help us. We told him we had a booking to which he replied that we didn’t. We told him we had booked with groupon and I got my mobile out to show him our booking to clarify. To which he told us that he didn’t care about the email and told us there was no chef and no staff, told us to take care and slammed the door on us. If you are thinking of buying a groupon voucher for the grey ox I would advise against it. Groupon have been unable to get hold of the merchant and have refunded me with groupon credit rather than refunding my money. The groupon offer is still on sale dispute groupon not being able to make contact with the merchant. We have tried to contact the grey ox to resolve to problem but the phone just rings out and then goes onto a message saying the mailbox is full. Won’t be returning to this restaurant.

Told us to go on groupon and book a Monday or Tuesday night so they would get paid. We couldn't book following week so booked week after. When I went to the toilet a man approached my husband and asked why we had booked the 19th. He explained why and then Aiden started on about heating and lighting the pub, giving us food and he will not get paid for 3 weeks. Then mumbled something as he walked away. The food was top notch, table service excellent. Wonder then why there were only 6 people dining. Maybe there is a management issue. Unfortunately we will not return again.

Not conducive to pleasant dining. The beef was very chewy but in general the food was OK. The pub is looking shabby with wallpaper peeling off because of the damp. We recently went back for my birthday, my choice I could have picked anywhere, but I wanted to see if the fish and chips were just as good. They were! My son and I both had the large Haddock and chips and my wife the small haddock and chips. The small Haddock was a decent size, we've had smaller served to us in many chippys. The chips are cooked to perfection, nicely browned but not too crispy and are soft inside. I would have to say after two seperate visits the fish and chips are consistently the best I've ever had.

I've written and submitted two reviews at the request of The Gray Ox, but neither have been published... to my knowledge. Lunch was delicious I can't deny, but the welcome, the ambiance the lack of Christmas decorations was very disappointing. We sat at a table for two next to an amazing fireplace, without the advertised roaring fire! This table was also adjacent to both the kitchens and the toilets, resulting in a very disruptive passing by of both public and staff the whole time. My friend was in a draft throughout with a shaft of cold air each time the kitchen door opened (as obviously a outside door or window was wide open) The staff were barely old enough to work and had clearly had no training as to customer relations ( which was no fault of theirs) after an increasingly uncomfortable time we left before coffee and to add insult to injury we were charged £20.00 more than the £90.00 quoted when I'd originally booked, months before. Never again, the food would have justified a good Sunday lunch, but in no way did it make up for the lack of festive cheer. Good luck to future diners, but it won't be us.

I said we had booked and was told there was no record of our booking. I said it was a Groupon booking and he said ok, you can sit here. This table for 4 was outside the entrance to the toilets and the kitchen. We were on our own apart from passers by. The main rooms of the pub were busy and buzzing, we were sat in a dark area on our own. Not what I paid for really, I expected for the cost we would be in the main areas of the pub. Very disappointing. The service was not too bad but the waiting staff were all young people with not much experience. There was no check back on any of our food until we had finished, no offer of drink refills until asked. The food was very good and would have been better in the right surroundings. Disappointing evening out for the family after we expected an evening to remember. But not for the reasons given. We will not be revisiting or recommending the venue after this experience.

We went to the Grey Ox after a dog walk. There were a few tables in when we arrived (we didn't have a booking) We initially stood at the bar waiting to be served, after a few minutes I asked the waitress if we could have a table and some menus. She showed us to our table and handed us the menus and said she would be back to take our drinks order. After waiting nearly 10 minutes she came over to take our order; at this point we were ready to order food so asked if we could order both to which she said "No" she went on to say that there was a table who sat down before us so she had to take their order first. We ordered our drink (which took around 5 mins to come) We again waited another 10 minutes at which point I went to the bar and said that I would like to order food and if there was an issue. Eventually our order was taken. The food was lovely but the service definitely let it down.

After emailing the restaurant privately I had hoped for some form of apology but have regretfully been ignored. As a family we often visit your restaurant, we all live a distance from each other and find the pub a great location for us all to be able to meet up and enjoy the excellent food offered, we have been many times as a larger party and sometimes a smaller group, but always bringing our dog. On Sunday I came with my partner, dog and met my parents, who made the booking. After us locating my mum and dad in the restaurant and getting sat down and comfortable we were abruptly approached by a member of staff who was quite confrontational in her way of dealing with us in that we hadn't made it known in the booking that we were bringing a dog along "did you tell us you were bringing a dog?" . We were told "you're not allowed to have dogs on the carpeted area and we have no room elsewhere".... After asking what this meant for us, the member of staff asked us to put our dog in the car. As this was obviously the only solution to be offered up to us we decided to leave, and we went elsewhere for our meal with not so much as an apology. we were all actually made to feel really embarrassed, the member of staffs attitude, as mentioned was quite confrontational and made the matter very public as she didn't have the slightest bit of discretion with how she dealt with the matter and was more than happy for other patrons to be privy to the "conversation". We have been numerous times before and have always brought the dog along and this has never been an issue, I remember in our initial booking for the first time we visited we asked if you were dog friendly, which is another reason we booked. No where on your website does it mention there are only certain areas of the pub that dogs are welcome, nor does it mention you have to make it known there is a dog in the party. We presumed a dog friendly restaurant was dog friendly. I personally mange a small staff in an independent business and frankly would be mortified if a member of my team dealt with a paying customer the way we were treated on Sunday. It was embarrassing and we probably won't be returning. Again, it is just something I wanted to highlight and you may wish to address the customer service skills of your staff. My parents had ordered and paid for drinks they didn't even get to finish yesterday as we were turfed out. It is such a shame as we always enjoyed our previous visits.

Compliments to the chef !! The furniture though is tired which was the only thing that let our visit down. Just some chair covers would improve the rooms. Otherwise a fabulous visit .

A very warm welcome and attentive but not intrusive service await. Aidan the owner is clearly passionate about what he does and the experience of his guests is obviously important to him.The food was excellent, well cooked pigeon breast and braised beef cheek for me. The cheek was fantastic, the meat tender and melt in the mouth. We will definitely return.

A very welcoming traditional pub. The roast was outstanding. Met for my Dad's birthday on Sunday, roast potatoes and mash were particularly good. Oh and the gravy, yum! We will be back, it's a good meeting point between Yorkshire and Manchester for us.

We reserved a table for two at the Gray Ox via a Groupon deal. On arrival, we were shown to a 2-person table where: ... one chair protruded into a walkway. ... the table top was sticky, most likely due to it being rundown. We asked for another table, and were informed that, with the exception of worse tables (e.g. near the toilet), they were fully booked. However, while we were dining, couples arrived with no booking and were shown a table. Also tables that would seat 3-4 were given to couples, and there remained unused tables when we left. There was a mix-up on the starters; whereby, due to miscommunication, my partner didn't receive hers, so we opted for a post-meal dessert instead. The food itself looked well-presented (pics attached), but the portions were small for the price. There was only one menu choice for vegetarians, and none for vegans (menu attached). The scallop starter and linguine main came with lemons; however, there was nothing with which to squeeze it. For inclusion only, there is no flexibility in the deal - The Groupon deal included a glass of wine each. My partner was driving, so asked if she could have a (cheaper) J2O instead of wine, but this was denied. Fair enough. The Groupon deal also touted a roaring log fire, but we were not seated near a fire, and couldn't see one lit. I guess it's only lit in winter. In conclusion, we felt like 2nd-class, possibly because we booked through Groupon, and sadly won't be dining there again.

We went to The Grey Ox on a Saturday night. There was a group of ten of us and we were put in the private dining room upstairs. The ambience was nice and the service was good. The food I ate was lovely. I had crab followed by seabass. The addition of a Bluetooth speaker in the room so we could play music was a nice touch. Although I say this there were some major flaws with the evening. They cannot cater for vegetarians with out preordering??!? We were not told this in the booking process. It is not clear on the website that anything not containing fish or meat needs preordering. There are a few items marked as need to be pre-ordered, but it is not clear that the entire vegan menu needs to be a pre-order and there is not a vegetarian menu available. If there is not a vegetarian menu to view online how can you preorder a vegetarian meal? This is mind boggeling to me? In this day and age to expect a vegetarian to pre order and not even let us know this in the booking process is appalling. This meant that my mother in law couldn't have a main meal. No alternative was offered, little apology was given and there seemed to be no effort in rectifying the problem. We were just told she should have pre ordered. She didn't want to make a fuss and start the evening on a bad note so ordered some sides. Disgraceful Four of our party had steaks, these were very fatty. If you are going to discriminate against vegetarians then your meat should be perfect, no lee way on the quality of the food you do serve if you can't cook meals not containing meat or fish. The last issue we had was when the bill came they had charged us £50 for use of the private room! We had not requested the private room or were we told there would be a charge for it. This was put half way down the bill, as if the charge was hidden. We questioned this and it was taken off the bill, but the 10% gratuity on top of that £50 remained on the bill. The fact they tried to charge us for the room in itself left me feeling disgruntled and as if they were trying to rip us off. This was a meal out for my birthday. I have mentioned some positives, but I left feeling angry, ripped off and disappointed. I will not be returning.
