Wonderful, secret village pub, very welcoming to grumpy old men! Best beer ever and great conversation. Do go but don’t tell too many of your friends! Andrew, Camelford.

Great ! Friendly pub….the best freshly cooked Sunday lunch I have had for a very long time. This is what I would call a “Proper Pub”, friendly staff and locals. The food is certainly good value for money….recommend that you book for Sunday lunch…perfectly cooked vegetables, meat…traditional meal, well cooked and presented. I will certainly be returning. Thank you.

Definitely a locals pub, bit of a stiff welcome, but didn't feel uncomfortable there. Food was basic (meal plus chips...) but tasty enough and well priced. Good selection of beers and would go there again if in the area. If you are staying in that area would be ok for a wander to for a couple of beers.

Gentrly tried the door at 10.00am to see if it was open. It wasn't. The door then opened and the landlord (presumably) said "We don't open until 12". I didn't get chance to say we were just wondering if they had a table for later as he'd already slammed the door on us.

Due to our local coastal restaurant being fully booked, we decided to visit this little pub .... Walked through the entrance for all locals inside to stand and stare in complete silence as we quietly took our seats in the corner, several comments where made by outraged locals asking “Who on earth are they” ..... Absolutely appalled at the experience, I made my family quickly eat their food which was surprisingly okay and then proceeded to remove them from such a horrendous situation. Absolutely disgusting, Wouldn’t recommend to my worst enemy.

We planned a long walk to include lunch at the pub. When we arrived it was closed. Fair enough but it would be helpful to find their hours published somewhere. It’s not on their website or even on their front door. We’d like to give it a try but I don’t want to walk five miles only to discover it’s not open.

We were stopping in the area and wanted a pub for dinner. Upon arrival we were greeted with a friendly welcome by the landlord. There was a wide selection of drinks including some nice real ales. We stayed for dinner and were not disappointed. I went for the fish and chips and my wife the lamb shank. Both were excellent. Portions were generous and tasty. Reasonable prices. Please note they only take cash as they don't have a card machine. We were made aware of this when we ordered. A traditional local pub that welcomes visitors with good food and beer.

Food was worse than transport cafe quality, for the prices.£5.95 for a child's meal consisting of 1 sausage, few chips and beans, no drink or even an ice cream. On the night we visited, we were told there had been a mishap with the eggs, so no eggs available! have they heard of supermarkets?? Sausage, egg and chips became sausage and chips. Sausages were of poor frozen quality as were the ribs. For the prices charged, we would have expected butchers sausages. The ribs were tough and not much meat and too much bbq sauce, all in all horrible. As for the staff, not really interested, girl behind the bar, chatting to the regulars or on her mobile phone. Would definitely not return or recommend to anyone else.

The girl behind the bar couldn't pronounce what the wine they had(Cabernet sauvignon). There was a small dusty bottle of Shiraz,( obviously not got any kind if a wine list) The menu looked good with lovely home cooked food plus a specials menu. This was ribs and steak. We were told they ran out on Saturday and our visit was a Tuesday so seemed a bit odd. We though we would still give them a chance, so I ordered a lamb shank and the other half a pork belly which looked scrummy. The girl said no lamb shank do I said ok the pork. Off she went only to return and say only one portion of pork left. I think we had given enough chances so got a refund and left. They didn't take a card. After watching the PBS TV series "Doc Martin", visiting the Horsehoe Inn was on our "to-do" list and believe me it was well worth the trip. We were staying in Boscastle so it was only a 3 1/2 mile drive over to Tresparrett. Words simply can't describe this genuine Cornish pub. The atmosphere, decor and ambiance was right out of the books. We arrived around noon-ish and oddly we were the only "diners" in the pub. Probably due to its out of the way location. Obviously as Americans with cameras around our necks we stood out like sore thumbs. Nonetheless we were greeted to sit anywhere we liked and menus were handed out and drinks were ordered. After sitting a bit whilst waiting for our food and looking at some of the Doc Martin photos and just taking in the interior and observing it's 3 or 4 local men at the bar I made the bold move of simply asking if i could take their picture at the bar...immediately the veil apprehensiveness dropped. The old men chatted with us as I should them pictures of Alaska and shared stories with them. The ceiling beams were covered with "beer mats" and the walls adorned with many horse brasses. I offered to send some beer mats from Alaska if I could get the mailing address. The bar keep gave me a Horseshoe Inn ink pen with the address. They really seemed genuine in their curiosity. The food....absolutely wonderful. The lamb kabobs and pork loin were to die for. The fish and chips...some of the best.Getting to the Horseshoe Inn is a bit challenging as the roads are very narrow. As Americans the driving made us a little uptight, but it was nothing that a good meal and a local ale or cider didn't fix! If ever in the Cornwall region again, we will return.

I can't believe the other reviews refer to the same pub that we visited! From the outside it looked lovely. Just the sort of village pub we like. My husband had a good pint but when I asked for a glass of Pino Grigio or Sauvignon Blanc, I was told they only had Chardonnay or a red! We ordered squid and olives and bread with balsamic vinegar. The squid was lovely but the olives appeared to have been tipped out of a jar. The bread was a roll of the type that you buy in a pack ready to put in the oven. All a bit tasteless. The fish and chips my husband had next was like the value, frozen, battered fish bought in a supermarket. The batter was damp and flat and the fish seemed mashed and pre-formed. Most of the other customers were ordering cheesy chips and I assumed this must be because they had tried the other items on the menu and taken the safer choice! The pub was full of locals which is nice but was hardly relaxing as one of them had his very young son(still in nappies) and a dog with him. The dog was fine and the man seemed to be able to control him unlike his son who kept running outside (once without his father noticing) and then spent some time opening the doors of the wood burner, which thankfully wasn't lit, and playing with the contents. We were really disappointed with our visit - no choice of wine and they don't take credit cards! We like traditional but some things would seem like a sensible commercial choice. One good point - there was a defibrillator in the garden. Every pub should have one!

How we envy the locals to this pub, a landlord with a sense of humour and food to delight the most fussy. We have eaten there twice steaks, tender and tasty, and a Sunday roast. I'm glad I chose a smaller size, compared to my husbands larger size, as they were very generous. The veg were fresh as if they had just been picked ( most probably had been ) and the roast potatoes crisp with fluffy insides ........ yummy !The menu offers a good selection for a pub and if the quality of the other choices matched ours, customer satisfaction is important in this pub.We relaxed at the bar after eating and found the regulars friendly and interesting, a pleasant change from the atmosphere in many pubs, if we could only transport this little gem to where we live we would be very satisfied, they may close at lunchtimes until Friday and the weekend, but its worth the wait, you will not be disappointed.
