We visited for dinner when staying on the nearby Egton Estate and had a fantastic evening! The pub is beautifully and uniquely decorated. We had mushrooms and goats cheese for starter - the goats cheese is made locally and is the strongest goats cheese we've ever had - very tasty! For mains we had beetroot bourginon and pork belly and just as good as the starters. We met the chef (and owner) and he was lovely, as was the woman on the bar. We also visited the farm shop during the day and got some excellent cheeses, incredible pork pie and scotch egg, as well as some lovely gifts. We will be back and definitely recommend a visit!

One of the best Sunday Lunches in the Whitby area. So pleased Sunday lunches are back on the menu for Autumn . Fabulous roasties and of course Yorkshire pudding. Only disappointment was that we didn’t have room for pudding 🤨

Summer Tuesday lunchtime we were the only customers No lovely food from the smoker We have been here several times and were roundly disappointed today Loud and not especially friendly chat between the owner and the young bar man completely ruined our experience The only lunch options were sandwiches at £8 each Has this beautiful place lost its way?

We enjoyed lovely summer's evening here with drinks and food. The food truck was opening the following day, but we ordered from the menu and enjoyed our meals as the sun set. I opted for the goat curry - give it a try as it was amazing. Husband enjoyed a burgers and skin on fries. A lovely evening in the beer garden before wandering off for our bed!

Awesome Sunday lunch here. Greeted by the owners on arrival and presented with some great draft ales. Lots of choice for lunch. Between us we had lamb, pork and chicken. Unbelievable range of veg, all of it ace, especially the cauliflower cheese and roast potatoes. Not rushed at all, and finished with a nice dessert (plenty of choice). Please visit this place as it’s lovely and remote and I’d hate to see it close because of a lack of custom

This hotel is set in beautiful surroundings, The rooms could be cleaner but not too bad but the strange thing is after having a quiet drink with other guests a gang of young lads came in in about 6 cars and just took over the bar being very loud, The owner seemed to disappear and let the yobs rule the roost, very strange, A very nice breakfast just a shame about the yobs.

Second time we have been here. This time for my birthday weekend away/meal. Slightly different than last time in the summer, with the cooler weather putting some off from enjoying the large beer garden (at one point we had it to ourselves - very nice!). Didn't put us off, and we enjoyed several drinks in the afternoon, changed and then went into the pub, where there were roaring fires, and a friendly welcome. The dining room was lovely, staff were lovely, and the food and wine great. Venison stew for me and belly pork for husband, followed by basque cheesecake and treacle tart for dessert. We will be back again sooner, rather than later. Lovely location and fab food!

Myself and my partner came here for a Sunday Roast and it was the best Roast dinner I've ever had (eating out)! The service was incredible, super friendly waitress and bar man. We had tie scallops and black pudding starter, wow!!! Soooo tasty and cooked to perfection! I had the roast beef & my partner had the lamb. The meat was incredible and melted in your mouth! There was so much food on the plate, all served piping hot and with extra delicious gravy! Our dog was very welcome too. They have a very nice little farm shop too, with lots of dog treats. The whole atmosphere was perfect for us, a traditional Yorkshire pub with great service and food. I will definitely visit here again when we are next in the area! Highly recommend 👌

Arrived on a Monday evening without a booking, with our dog, and were made so welcome, seated in the restaurant. Menu was full of food we would love to eat so we will have to return soon. Chose the Yorkshire Platter to share and every item on there was beautifully crafted. Pickled balsamic onions and home roasted tomatoes, delicious local cheese, Herby butter, home made bread with oil and vinegar dip, delicious charucterie, we are every scrap. We had food envy as other people's food arrived, the chicken leek and ham pie was a proper pie with pastry all around the filling!!!!!! The landlady told us she had made them, we wavered between ordering a pie meal instead of pudding but Bakewell tart and treacle tart, both amazing, won the vote. All staff were delightful and we can't wait to come back as 23 miles distance makes it almost our local. PS not many places in North Yorkshire serve food on Mondays so extra points for this too 👍👍👍👍

My friend and I arrived at The Horseshoe Hotel Farm Shop on Monday 3rd September on the penultimate stage of our Coast to Coast walk. We were to be staying at Grosmont overnight where no pub / restaurant food is available on Mondays. The two lovely people at the Farm Shop made us up a wonderful picnic for supper which was super tasty. Thank you! Note to C2C'ers - the farm shop is a great place to buy a picnic if you are staying in Grosmont on Mondays/Tuesdays (when no pub food options appear to exist in Grosmont).

Booked for an overnight stay with out motorhome, ( quite a large one), met on arrival by the landlord and a member of staff who helped rearrange the car park so I could get to the hook up. Food was brilliant and a very different style of menu. Outside toilets for during the night, an added bonus ! Heartily recommend to motorhome users but always pre book

We shared a duck and hoisin sauce pizza (Were Quackers) with a side of loaded fries (Don't Get Crabby). We were not disappointed with the quality of the food and came back the next day for lunch! I had a crab sandwich from the Farm Shop on site and husband enjoyed the hanging chicken kebab! Absolutely spot on! We stayed on site in our campervan and could not be more welcomed. Visited the farm shop for coffee. Had a decaf cafetiere. Would've had Americanos but they didn't do decaf versions. Felt rushed by the woman serving who seemed anxious to be elsewhere, and she had no interest in engaging with our attempt at conversation. Coffee was very weak and our orange and poppy seed cake which was very dry. The gent's toilet in the pub proper was shocking, made up of rough wooden planking with a metal, bucket-like sink. If there was a light l certainly couldn't find it. Could be a great place if done properly and showing a little appreciation for their customers.

We chose to eat here for Sunday lunch given that it offered everything from sandwiches to pizzas to the full blown Sunday roast. This coupled with the fact that we've drank here several times and always enjoyed the ambience and the revamped interior. So a crab sandwich, a Fun Guy pizza and fries were chosen. The crab sandwich with small salad accompaniment was OK but at £13 your wouldn't expect anything less. The fries were fluffy, light and delicious. The pizza was however a let down. It was baked in the outside kitchen in the gas fired pizza oven but was cool when served and had a base more akin to a chapati than a pizza. Our strong suspicion was that the gas fired oven was fired up only for the duration of the bake and hence the interior of the oven wasn't at the required temperature to properly bake the pizza so that the ingredients bubblebin the heat as we prefer. The base was just thin, floppy and tasteless. Again the pizza wasn't cheap so we expected better. Having relayed our disappointment it was suggested that the pizza could have been reheated but surely this should be obvious as it's taken from the oven? We'll certainly be back for a drink but won't take up the food option again.

We visited for dinner and had an outstanding meal. The menu is short but interesting; we skipped the starters and I had lamb; my husband had the day’s special of grouse. The lamb was beautifully tender and very well-presented with vegetables and jus (perhaps some potatoes would have been nice?). Afterwards I had cheese; my husband said his strawberry millefeuille was one of the best desserts he’d ever had. There was also excellent homemade bread and interesting amuse bouches (eg sous vide oyster). Price about £40pp for 2 courses plus a glass of wine - and well worth it.

We have always liked to go here for the tranquility of the place with running sound of water from the river in the background - used to be a lovely traditional pub inside with friendly bar staff. Not sure what’s going on here now for a few reasons the main one being the music outside from the outside bar is far too loud ! We used to love this pub. However, the new owners are so up themselves and rude we won’t be returning. First impressions are good, there’s a lovely outside eating area and inside is candlelit creating a warm atmosphere. I only wish the same could be said for the owners. Outside is now plastic glasses only, which is a pet hate of mine, so we decided to stay inside. We ordered food at 5.45pm and asked if we could eat in the restaurant, but were firmly told, “no it’s fully booked”. Well maybe it was later I the evening, but at the time of asking it was completely empty. However, we didn’t want to make a fuss so we ate in the bar. To our surprise, a short time later, a customer walked in and asked to be seated in the restaurant. They were told, “certainly, but we need the table back for 7.30pm”. Then no more than ten minutes later exactly the same thing happened with another party, obviously our faces didn’t fit. I had the chicken Kebab, which was ok and my partner had, what turned out to be a very poor lobster dish with chips and a green salad. The dish wasn’t accompanied with a sauce, consequently it lacked imagination and taste. The meals were plonked down in front of us and we were left to sort our own cutlery out. We would have expected that someone would have called back to check on us to see if everything was ok, but no. Halfway though the meal we wanted to order more drinks, we had empty glasses in front of us but again no one came to the table, so I had to get up and go to the bar. We initially wanted to have desserts with the meal, but as the whole experience was going from bad to worse we decided to leave. We were not brought a bill, so again had to go to the bar to pay, we were told how much everything was and I paid, but when I asked for the bill I was told that they didn’t do one. However, as I need a VAT receipt the lady had to reluctantly go off and hand write one. All in all it’s a shame, because it’s a lovely pub, spoilt by amateur management and staff that didn’t have a clue.

We were doing a long walk, so thought we would pop in to the Horseshoe Hotel to get a quick drink. However, having seen the location and the menu, we stayed for a meal. It was fantastic. I had the seafood platter, which really would have served two and had everything on it. The bread served with it was homemade rosemary and sea-salt focaccia - and the whole trip would have been worth it for that alone (we came back in a car the next day and bought some more of it from the farm shop which they also run). Husband had steak and chips - which was also wonderful. They serve cocktails too, and sitting on the lawn drinking strawberry daiquiris, under the shade of tall mature trees, I felt like I was in heaven! Pity I was wearing my walking boots, and not a tea dress, but still! Thoroughly recommend.

Our first meal out for absolutely ages because of COVID-19, so I thought I’d book a table here, I couldn’t get in last time we were up here on holiday. The menu is delightful, the food really really delicious and presented very very well! I had smoked duck croquettes, my husband had lobster for starters, there was a prawn and satay amuse bouche (unexpected!)I had venison for my main which is the nicest I’ve ever had and my husband had the lamb cooked lovely and pink, then a fabulous pre dessert (unexpected again!) of a Black Forest mousse which I would have happily eaten for my dessert choice, I chose the lemon tart with pine nut ice cream, scrumptious! and my husband had hazelnut and chocolate bombe, think Ferraro Roche with malt ice cream, also scrumptious! We had coffee with very rich petit fours (I’ve had to take them home, I couldn’t just leave them!) With 3 glasses of wine,1 Prosecco and 2 pints of beer, the bill came to under £130, now I’ve paid over double that in Birmingham and haven’t been anywhere near impressed. I shall definitely be coming back here to try more of their delicious food, I wasn’t expecting such high quality of ingredients and presentation, keep it up! Oh and the staff were great too!

Our table was never cleared and we would have eaten cake with platters still all over our table but for us moving everything ourselves. We were embarrassed to have suggested meeting here and will not do so again. Don't usually leave reviews for things but feel on this occasion it's warranted. This was our second visit since 2020 when it changed to new owners. The first time last year we came with friends and ordered food which took nearly 2 hours to arrive as they had lost our order. Giving them a second chance we tried the food again, following lockdown. We were with friends who waited 30 minutes for their food to arrive but we had to wait a further 40 minutes for ours. Even though we ordered at the same time. So they had finished their meal before ours had arrived. Seeing their food lowered our expectations as their kebabs were clearly burnt black. Chargrilled/BBQ style food we realise may be slightly charred but their food looked basically very burnt. When our burgers arrived, after a long while waiting, my beef burger meat was even more burnt, tasted burnt and covered with mayonnaise to disguise. Had to scrape half of the burger away to make it edible. Didn't want to send it back as it was already so late and we were famished. Also didn't think much of the burger buns which were purposefully coloured black (which no-one thought was very appetizing!), but understand it was to be original and to be trendy and they tasted ok. But for £28 that we paid for two average burgers with chips, garnish and coleslaw it was pretty disappointing. On a more positive note is the beautiful country setting and beer garden in the sunshine is very popular following lockdown.(See photo)

The ceiling looked as though it had been scraped ( hope it is just a base coat) wall painted in gold, old useful and beautiful furniture mostly gone, weird animal skins on backs of some chairs.Whoever designed this must have used there own wierd personal taste, forgetting you must cater for the many if you want to attract people. All the locals seem to be drinking at the postgate. Local regulars are your bread and butter during bad weather conditions Sorry would not be back. Heart has been ripped out in my opinion.

We walked by the river, crossed at the Stepping Stones and was in the Horseshoe Hotel. There was a lovely bar set outside in the garden and tables scattered across the big lawn. We sat underneath a large tree taking in the beautiful gardens. All other tables were busy with couples and families, some with dogs and some without. There was a lovely relaxed atmosphere and everyone was very friendly... we talked across to some of the other people at the other tables. We ordered the Pork Sharing Platter as we felt a little hungry... it was very tasty and just what we needed. My boyfriend enjoyed the beer and I had a lovely gin and tonic. The restaurant was really covid compliant and the service was fantastic. The seating is lovely and you can really take in the relaxing nature of the moors. There's even an outdoor bar if you don't want to go indoors.

Having reviewed this restaurant as wonderful over the last few years what a sad day to go back. The fact that the superb Sunday roasts have been replaced by a hugely disappointing BBQ was bad enough to warrant a review in its own right. However, having then stated as such to the barmaid, to then be rebuked by the owners in a confrontational manner is completely unacceptable. When pointing out what was wrong the lady owner clearly became irritated by our comments. To finally say go we don’t need your custom. What a shame having visited so many times on a Sunday under the old owners it was packed and always had to book in advance. Speaks volumes we counted only 5 tables at 1.30 on Sunday lunchtime.

We had a wonderful family meal here. Food was top class. We had lobster, steak, scallops, sea bream and couldn't fault it. There is no childrens menu but the staff were so helpful in being flexible with the options available. Wine and beer also great with a good spirit choice.

During a 7 mile round trip from Glaisdale to Grosmont, stopping off at the Horse Shoe was a well needed pit stop. With no hesitation, we decided to sit outdoor in a well spaced out beer garden. With relaxing music and the smell of a hog roast, it was the perfect place to enjoy our first ‘post lockdown’ pint. We always felt safe and at ease with the friendly staff and the well thought out social distancing. The money and effort that has also gone into the toilet facilities and outdoor area is fantastic and is very much acknowledged and appreciated. After several enjoyable drinks we had to motivate ourselves to walk back to Glaisdale. Thank you for a lovely afternoon x

Staying in Egton Bridge for short holiday we decided to visit the Horse Shoe Hotel for dinner this evening. I had the smoked salmon, prawn, horseradish cream, with lime and rocket. A delightful and light starter before my main course of Steak and kidney pie served with mashed potatoes, kale and heritage carrots. Our server recommended wine, which was indeed very good easy drinking. It is a good while since I have enjoyed a meal out as much and I would recommend it to anyone who visits the area. I understand that it has recently been taken under new management and I wish them every success. The service was friendly and helpful, my five years old grandson was welcomed. The ambiance was relaxed and we enjoyed our evening.

The hotel has just been renovated and taken back to its original glory and furnished to suit. Open fire in all three areas. Extremely friendly welcome and we will definitely return. Our lunch was butternut squash soup, steak and kidney pie, chicken skewers, and vegan burger. All delicious and served beautifully. Chocolate brownie and ice cream to finish.Peaceful setting and then a stroll around the village.Perfect way to celebrate a birthday.

We stayed here in our Motorhome over the weekend for 2 nights, owners were very welcoming and friendly and made us feel at home from the minute we phone to make a booking till we left. We ate and drank in the pub which on a cold winter day was perfect to get warm. The beer is well kept and the food was home cooked, on the Sunday both my wife and I have the Lamb which was served with Yorkshire Pud , mash, roasts and 5 different Veg.....Perfect. The area has loads of walks and a train stop to Whitby so there is plenty to enjoy. Great stay, great location and great REAL country pub

We were having a day out around the area and choose this place for our Sunday lunch after checking out Trip Advisor and have to say we weren’t disappointed. From the minute we set foot in the bar and the friendly welcome we received from the staff behind the bar to the minute we left, the visit was very pleasant. We ordered a soup, which was mushroom, and a garlic mushrooms for starters and both were very nice, decent portions and accompanied by fresh bread and butter. For mains my wife chose the chicken and I the beef. Again both were excellent and accompanied by a large Yorkshire pudding, which tasted freshly made, a wide selection of vegetables, again which all tasted freshly prepared, and a large gravy jug.The staff weren’t slow in asking whether everything was okay and also offering additional veg and gravy.Overall a great Sunday lunch and we wouldn’t hesitate to return when in the area.

The place has atmosphere and a fine location; the food (we ate in the bar) is OK but nothing to write home about -- we had scampi and chips and salmon with (too many) vegetables, which were both perfectly edible but rather humdrum.

Hubby & I enjoyed dinner here on our last night in Egton Bridge. We had a wonderful meal and loved the friendly feel of the bar (where we ate). I had the vegetarian goats cheese & caramelised onion tart which was fantastic. Clearly made in house it was light and delicious with a fabulous salad. Hubby had the chicken with a mushroom & tarragon sauce with extra vegetables which he throughly enjoyed.

Old hotel set in a beautiful valley, with river Esk tributary flowing through the back garden. Lovely maintained gardens. Six letting bedrooms. We had no. 3, overlooking the front garden, which I think was probably the best. Bed linen was clean, as was everything in the public rooms, except for the carpet, which was grubby. Not too surprising, since the hotel is a stop off point for walkers doing the coast to coast walking trail. However, this bedroom was very tired and needed a coat of paint, and some attention to the door lock, which is falling apart. That said, the food is excellent, and enough to feed Desperate Dan. Can't fault the staff, who are very friendly and helpful. Good luck to the new landlady.

The Horseshoe Hotel was recommended to us, we decided to have a drive out in the North Yorkshire moors and call for lunch, we were warmly welcomed upon arrival and shown to our seats and ordered out drinks and food, we had starters (garlic mushrooms and tempura prawns) they were gorgeous. Then we had our mains, chicken with wild mushroom and garlic, it was outstanding. Thoroughly enjoyed the experience and will definitely be returning in the future

Went in on a Tuesday night in May without a booking - I was surprised how busy it was. It's clearly popular with locals but actually that gave it a nice atmosphere. The staff were very friendly and we got a table. I ordered the steak and ale pie. I have an issue with pies in bowls with a pastry lid, to me thats a stew. Having said that it gorgeous, rarely have I had so much meat in a 'pie'. They were also happy to chop and change the potato and veg options. Overall I was really really impressed and would recommend - book though to avoid disappointment!

After having a great night out here a few years ago whilst doing the C2C, I returned with my wife for a three-day stay in nearby Keeper’s Cottage, and we ended up dining here on two consecutive nights. The pub is delightfully set off a loop in the road, with the green in the middle forming the pub’s beer garden. The pub itself is a typical low-ceiling Yorkshire hostelry with a really cosy feel, they had three real ales on - all well kept - and the steak and ale pie was perfect. It’s pub grub, but all beautifully home made, including very tasty double-cooked chips. Not a microwaved ready meal in sight.

Stopped by to rest my legs from the local hills. A great selection of food and beer is available. I went for the mozzarella and roasted red pepper panini. Delicious as was the pale ale the same name as the pub. A special thank you goes the bar staff for making me feel very welcome and allowing me to stash my bike round the back. Fabulous.

We stayed for two nights and enjoyed an exceptional evening meal at this very hospitable inn. The food was nothing short of perfect and the staff were very attentive. The friendly welcoming owner deserves recognition for running this establishment. There's not a lot to add other than the breakfast was superb, nothing too much trouble and the relaxing setting watching the free range chickens made the break even more enjoyable. Thank you!

We had pre booked a table for 4 for Sunday lunch in October. We had been told that it gets booked up early as it is so good! Indeed while we were there they were turning people away because they were fully booked. The dining room is old fashioned in decor but matches the rest of this quaint country pub/hotel so don’t let that put you off.

We followed reviews for a great Sunday Lunch place whilst staying near Whitby. Reviews so right we had the best meal with great sized portions. My grandson chose sausage and mash and ate every bit followed by the largest dish of ice cream. We all had various roasts all fantastic followed by a home made dessert. What a great find and reasonably priced. A great place to go but book first to get into the restaurant. Thank you to all wonderful helpful staff. Really enjoyed our visit.

What a find! This has been the loveliest meal we have had this year. The food is beautiful, my husband had haddock and loved it. I had rib of beef and it was just delightful some of the best food I have had. The landlord was super lovely and nothing was too much trouble. The staff were lovely and attentive but not over bearing. The menu gives lots of choice and there is a brilliant gin menu. They are dog friendly too so we all had a wonderful time- thank you. We have booked up for Sunday lunch when we are next on holiday over here. I couldn’t recommend this place enough
