Fabulous food place, and nice bar area

Pleasant atmosphere in small pub with bar area and adjoining restaurant room. Open fire in bar area. Excellent food on the pricey side, but great friendly service. Food was fab. Bar menu (sandwiches and pizzas available in the restaurant at lunchtimes in addition to main menu). Good coffee. Plentiful parking.

Remember this is a pub. Now forget your idea of a pub. This place is upmarket with 2 defined areas. Drinking/socialising and dining. We dined. We were thoroughly pampered by the staff. The food was of a superior standard. They offered a selection of pizzas that were cooked outside in a proper pizza oven. Even though I can't stand pizzas, I was impressed. Drink is plentiful with everything on offer from real ale to wine/spirits. All to a decent standard although the Bass was a little disappointing but that's me being an ultra critical real ale expert. This has been added to our list of places to eat.

Food was ok but the portions were small for how much you are paying. Our main issue was how slow the service was. Would we go back? No purely down the the slow service and the small portions.

This was our annual Christmas 🎄 Secret Santa 🎅 dinner table for 6. The service was excellent, as was the food quality, totally delicious. The atmosphere was friendly, welcoming and cosy, the staff were friendly and helpful, nothing was too much trouble. We were delighted and had a wonderful evening. Thank you all very much. We stopped in at 22:35pm after getting stuck in traffic on the M1. The staff were so kind, letting us have a quick pint and bring our husky in. After talking to them about finding a place to park up our camper for the night, they let us use their car park. We didn’t eat so can’t rate the food however the atmosphere was lovely, log burner was on and was very cosy inside. Would definitely go again! Thank you ☺️

Booked over the phone, on arrival they couldn't find our booking. Once seated other people were getting served before us despite them arriving after us. Food was ok, small portion sizes and very expensive. The desserts were absolutely tiny, and for £9 each we thought they were a rip off. Possibly the only time we have ever had 3 courses in a restaurant and left still hungry. We won't be returning.

Lovely accommodation in a good location with plenty of parking. On the main Ashby road, but rooms set back aways so no noise from the road or the pub. The breakfast choices were good and ours was yummy (full english).

THE HORSE IN YOUR GARDEN The Horse provided the food for a family party and all I can say is WOW! The food was amazing and the salads superb! We would definitely consider having them do the food for futures events it was simply amazing to have The Horse at home (or the garden in this case).

We had an absolutely delicious breakfast at the Horse on Saturday. The staff are so professional and friendly, the food was fresh and we all had a different brunch that was different but equally as good. They even offered to do a mini version of the porridge for my baby. Would absolutely visit again.

Our group of six all enjoyed our Sunday lunch, the beef is normally served pink but one person preferred it not pink and this was accommodated, I can recommend the gammon, and the child's fish fingers looked very good too, the Abbot Ale was also very good. WARNING revisited and checked the website before booking and it shows Sunday lunch 2 courses £19.95 when we arrived we were handed menus which stated 2 courses £25.95.

Oh what a charming place with amazing food, all locally sourced. I went with my family the children were well catered for. Staff polite and friendly. Nothing was too much trouble. I suggest making a reservation as the restaurant gets extremely busy. Even at 5pm on a Saturday evening with a reserved table in a packed restaurant our meals arrived quickly. The food was out of this world, top quality my steak cooked to perfection and presented beautifully. Staff clean smart polite and on hand to help at all times. Decor has an oldy worldy theme, but somehow remains modern and appealing. My visit was super. Thank you so much

My wife and I had booked a table for two and were placed in front of the fire escape door. My wife's chair also hid the fire extinguisher 🧯. The service was very slow but the food quite good. We wouldn't go again, if there was a fire the escape door was blocked by a table and the extinguisher was not visible behind a chair. It was potentially dangerous.

The team have done a great job since taking over (a while ago now). Good food IMHO (my mates swear by their Sunday lunch), good local bitters and a nice pint of Guinness (can't comment on the lagers) and always a warm welcome. Love the spicy king prawn starter and Monday Burgers are good. Cheers!

Excellent pub, highly recommended it

We stayed at the hotel when meeting up with friends. Originally looking for a venue that was halfway between both our starting points we were drawn here due to the excellent reviews. Positives - with the exception of the completely burnt (should have been chargrilled) toast that accompanied mussels starters (it was replaced after highlighting it to the waitress - how it was missed I don't know) and whole cloves of garlic in the sauce, dinner was good. Not cheap, but good. The cheeseboard was particularly good. Negatives - breakfast (included in the price of our rooms). We had to pre-order this. Service was lacking. We were not invited to have any juices or cereals (we had to ask, we only got juice). The eggs royale came with fairly hard (rather than soft) boiled eggs. This was highlighted to the waitress who requested more eggs (rather than changing the whole dish). They arrived by the time the rest of the party had just about finished. I had ordered black pudding with this (as an extra on the side). For some reason it came under the salmon and hollandaise. All of which were soggy by the time the eggs arrived. Also, one of the party requested a bloody Mary (they were on holiday after all), it never arrived, perhaps it wasn't possible, we don't know as we never heard back. We were never offered any additional hot drinks. We probably won't return.

Absolute gem of a place stayed here at there private rooms the barn courtyard that is separated from the pub/restaurant it’s self (the horse at shepshed) Can’t fault anything from our stay, the rooms are stunning and clean and the food served in the restaurant is out of this world, compliments to the chefs on the evening service and breakfast service and also the bar staff that are welcoming and helpful 5 big stars from us and if we are ever back in the area we will definitely return

1st visit. Sunday lunch was great. Place really busy. Good bar choice with 3 x cask on including draught bass. We didn't have starters but had main meal and sweet. We both had 3meats.which was chicken. Gammon and beef this was a £3 supplement to having 1 meat. Yorkshire puddings came with sausage which was a toad in hole nice addition. Cauliflower cheese and veg lovely. Dessert we had cheese cake and wife had Pear & 🍐 2 x courses =£25.95 3 x Courses 3195 Good value and friendly service. Will certainly be back.

I went to The Horse today for the first time in around 4 years. Last time I went the food was great, but it was a different level today. Fantastic. I went with my parents for a birthday meal. Very warm welcome and great choice of drinks. We all had a starter and main course, and the food was delicious. I had belly pork with black pudding and my parents both had the panko coated brie. All fantastic. For mains I had the catch of the day which was sea bass with a small haddock in batter served with a prawn and sweet potato katsu curry and samphire. Beautiful. My parents had the pork fillet and fish and chips. Everything was stunning. I can't believe we were the only one's eating in the restaurant as the level of finesse in the cooking is outstanding. Prices are very good for the quality of the service (around £8 for a starter and £23 for mains). Our meal and drinks for 3 was around £32 a head. I can't believe the place wasn't packed as it's a excellent place for business lunches to impress potential clients or for a special lunch. Would highly recommend.

Birthday dinner party. We ordered appetizers, main meals and desserts. The first dish was garlic oil scallops - the price was a bit too high. There were 3 scallops and the rest were only mashed potatoes and an ugly fried cauliflower. To be honest, it's not cooperative at all. Main dish - Seafood meal (price is more expensive) portion is small Fish and chips - fish, chips, pickle sauce all good. The green bean puree alone looked very dry on the outside. It seems like it was heated in the microwave for too long. The steak also added a large shrimp - just cooked. The sauce is a little lacking. Duck breast and vegetable hash browns – 8/10 Lamb gizzard meal - tender meat. But there is very little sauce. It tastes dry. Dessert - Apple Crisp with Custard Sauce and Hot Chocolate Cake + Nut Ice Cream 8/10. Summary 7.5/10

It’s our go to place to eat, food is always top quality. We go to other restaurants and find ourselves saying it’s not as good as our local.

I was part of a large family group that enjoyed the pub/restaurant on Sunday afternoon. Service was faultless, efficient and professional. The girls were an absolute credit to the pub, all orders were taken correctly and everyone received their very well presented food at the same time, despite being such a large group. Food tasted and looked great, drinks reasonably priced, I would definitely return and recommend, thanks again!

We called in for a drink and were so comfortable we ended up staying for dinner. The bar side of The Horse is a proper local pub with a lovely friendly atmosphere. Comfy sofas as well as tables and chairs, a woodburning stove and very dog friendly. There is a bar menu which we were contemplating but having seen how cosy the restaurant looked we decided to eat in there. Bearing in mind this was early on a Wednesday evening the restaurant was really quite busy, which speaks for itself. It's definitely a restaurant rather than pub food but nice and relaxed. We both thoroughly enjoyed our meals, which were high quality and generous. The fish pie was special, the nicest I have ever had. Service was friendly and efficient. Would thoroughly recommend. We noted the accommodation at the rear of the car park and I imagine it would be a lovely place to stay.

Me and my friend visited here tonight for a catch up and our meals were really nice! She had a beef burger and I had the chicken burger. They were both clearly handmade, seasoned well and had a battered gherkin on top! Lovely sweet potato fries and homemade coleslaw too. Good price, service and food. Will definitely be back again!

Absolutely gorgeous meal here last night. I had the fish pie which was delicious, packed with good quality fish and seafood. My partner said his steak was one of the best he’s ever had. Friendly service and lovely atmosphere. We really should come here more often.

I don't normally review anywhere but feel its only right to put across how disappointed we were with our meal on Saturday 7th. We was really looking forward to our meal it was our 1st visit as we normally eat elsewhere but had heard how great it was. Portion size was dismal. My husband had the bacon burger and was astonished when there was no bacon, no cheese, no salad of any sort although there was a fair amount of fries he was disapointed. I ordered the chicken breast and well I couldn't contain my humour at the fact i thought it was a child size portion. My mum ordered the scampi and whilst i get you possibly ordered the scampi in there was no scampi in most of the peices it was nearly all just breadcrumb, we left very disapointed as we had planned this night for my mums birthday. I know sometimes these things can happen and we didn't want to cause a scene as the place was very busy. We was also shoved in the corner and was pretty much forgotten about the whole time we was there. Never mind the fact we waited nearly 45mins after our table booking time to be seated. I'll be suprised if we ever come back

Great food, lovely staff but service not quite matching these 5 star experience

We make a point of stopping here for pizza every time we do the long drive down south to see family. They are so friendly, even found us a table when it was really busy (which it often is) when other places might have turned us away. Very jealous of the people of Shepshed having such a nice local they can go to!

Booked my 80th b’day celebrations here with a few of my closest friends. A great evening was had by all. All of our needs were catered for, with an excellent service. A few of my friends had never been to the Horse previously, but will definitely put it on there favoured restaurant list. The real ales here are well cared for, and a good selection. Also note that the cost per head of my visit included all courses plus copious bottles of wine.

Has my vote for hardest working owner. Warm and comfortable with good food and drink. Local residents are fortunate to have a great local pub and eatery.

Food was yummy & good value. Very busy just before Christmas &, as they seemed to be short staffed, waiter service was a little slow. Very nice atmosphere but was chilly in restaurant; radiator not on where we were sat &, although lots of people indoors, outside night temperature meant it was cold indoors as well. However been at other times of year and everything 5 star.
