Popped in here for a drink and to have a rest from walking to find a proper pub, this is the place the Americans should visit if they want to see the real Yorkshire, locals drinking in a local pub. Good value beers and on a Saturday they have special offers which were even cheaper. Really enjoyed it.

Generally an ok pub, however they are not dog friendly after 9pm. Got harassed from about 8:30 as friends of ours had a Doberman Pincher sleeping under one of the tables. At 9pm got told to leave the premises!!! Absolutely disgraceful for a pub. Avoid at all cost if you are a dog owner.

A no frills, honest to goodness basic pub full of locals. It knows what it is and has no pretentions, a friendly welcome, meat raffle the works ! Friendly locals love their sport even if your team isn't their team- you can enjoy the match, racing, boxing which you can see on multiple screens. Great atmosphere for sporting events. If you are looking for organic bistro food and gluten free craft beers ....this isn't your place. Beer is in good condition, bar snacks come in packets and covid precautions are clearly adhered to.

Went in Saturday night and got to say it would have been a decent pub if we wasn't in a pandemic ,in my opinion it was a hot bed to spread the virus, people was stood up all around us and groups of more than six were chatting everywhere and mixing freely when I got up to leave I complained to a female member of staff and even she said she didn't feel safe

It’s a pub, handy for a drink if you visit Ripon, no food at lunchtime so we made do with a packet of crisps, sumptuous to be expensive.

No social distancing in place at all groups of young men stood in main floor area (not seated as should have been) shouting and singing. 20 minutes later they were told to sit down, appalling. I left my drink and walked out.

Visited twice on Saturday. Afternoon (about 5pm) sports were shown. Older clientele and mainly couples. Good atmosphere. You could tell straightaway it would be popular on an evening as it had that ‘party vibe’ - DJ booth, large ‘dance floor’ area, drinks promotions (cheapest for lager in Ripon!) and disco lights and sure enough... We popped in for the last drink of the night at 11:30pm. It was busy. Good atmosphere. ‘Cheesy’ pop music but clientele were much younger. If you fancy a dance then this would be the place to go .

Reasonably priced, sports on several different TV's, a good disco on Friday and Saturday nights & of course friendly staff!

Been to Ripon many times, always visit this pub, usually good atmosphere, sport on TV, reasonable prices, but surprised how quiet it was on a Saturday tea time, until I ordered!! When did this pub get so expensive?? A large wine and house vodka and coke £9.50!!! Had the same in neighbouring pubs cheaper all afternoon. Sadly will be my last visit!

WOW ! MUST GO!! the pop world of ripon, if you want cheap and cheerful drinks then the hornblower IS THE PLACE FOR U 💗 . Shout out to the man singing Jackson 5. We were to young to experience the real but it was very similar and I suspect it was something close to this amazing performance . Goodnight ripon . 💙

I didn’t know Ripon that well so I asked my friend who had lived in the area all his life, to take me to a couple of places. Went in there and I think the first warning sign was the lack of tables followed by the fact that they only took cash. Left after taking one sip of the black sheep. If you do come here, take the lager instead.

You know when you watch a horror film and 4 people walk into a bar in an area they are not from and the whole bar stops and stares at you? That’s this place. 8-12 Locals sat about watching darts on tv, and a very un-friendly and not helpful bar man. It’s a shame because it’s a really nice area, there is a whetherspoons 100 metres away with 100 people in of all ages. See where I’m going? Pool table 70p and a Juke Box. 1 pint and left laughing our heads off. We found another pub around the corner which was 100% more welcoming in which we stayed until 12:30am and spent a small fortune.

Went here with a friend while staying in Ripon. Tried this place as a change for the usual pub we sit in and were very surprised. Great range of beer in a traditional pub with a great atmosphere.

more for social and drinking than eating. Food good though and lunch time busy but mainly drinkers and locals in. Night time loud energetic music and good atmosphere.

A great watering hole for all types, lots of sports on the many TV's complimented with a superb selection of traditional ales. We enjoyed a good hour or so in here until it got really noisy so we moved on to the next pub.

Not a bad pint since the poor old Unicorn has to close due to power cuts. Good pumping thumping music and really that is about it ! Working WiFi makes matters slightly more bearable !

The best pub in Ripon by a long way, full of good people, always packed on Friday and Saturday nights. The barman is a character with a strange sense of humour. It is a must when going for a drink in Ripon.

How rude was the man behind the bar, scruffy looking pink shirt dark hair, i ordered a bottle of wine but made a mistake straight away asked if i could change it , not opened the wine may i add the bar person had literally handed me the wine, HE WAS SOOOOO RUDE!! Basiclly gave me abuse over the bar said not his mistake and walked off, £15.50 for a bottle of cheap wine plus 2 vodkas and coke which is watered down vodka, he is the rudest person i ever met!!!! Avoid at allllllll costs

Beer flat, wine only fit for a chip shop, beer 'garden' ankle deep in fag ends... There are so many better alternatives in Ripon.But it was busy and lively - I'm guessing with locals - so all is not bad out would seem.Shame.

We stopped in here for lunch but they weren’t serving hot food. So we stayed for a drink, sitting by ourselves in the beer garden, listening to the good music that was being piped in. This is a great pub if you like sport, btw.

Having been in once before and I was pleased with the wide selection of ales and pool/darts facilities on offer, and so on my second visit expectations were for an enjoyable night.However after visiting again I was disappointed to learn that despite displaying a 'Challenge 25' poster citing PASS cards as appropriate forms of ID, the publican dismissed my Validate card saying "we don't take those here". Following a short protest pointing out the signage he had displayed he then unceremoniously told myself and my friends to "f*** off" - hardly the most professional attitude. Which made us wonder whether he valued our custom at all given the fact there was barely a handful of regulars in and ourselves, from our perspective he wished only to play darts in peace and viewed us as unnecessary inconvenience. Would not recommend to anyone, beyond perhaps regulars who could PASS - ;) - for 40+, as the landlord does not seem interested in welcoming any young people into his establishment. Forced my friends and I to relocate to another pub (The King William IV) and suffice to say I will not be darkening The Hornblower's door again.

Traditional pub with nicely decorated and immaculately clean interior & bar with good selection of ales at good prices. Warm welcome from bar staff and friendly locals. A proper drinking pub and not some trendy themed bar and it's all the better for it. Very good for a relaxing drink as it's not nearly as crowded as the Wetherspoons down the road.

Quite busy with friendly staff and locals. Only in the Tavern for a couple of hours to watch the footy and really enjoyed it

The pub is ideally located in the market square region. Its a proper blokes pub, and main attraction is the live sports. If you want to let the missus roam the shops, this is a good place to crash. The beer is very well priced too at 2.40 a pint of lager.

Great place for sport and often have a great variation of music!! I ate here on a Monday night which was nice and quiet. Staff friendly and food was really tasty!! Great Value for money!! Definatly come again!
