The Hope and Anchor in South Hams

Enjoyed a pleasant lunch with family and friends at the Hope & Anchor on Bank Holiday Monday. Not as busy as expected, which was good (for us!). Very friendly service in a pleasant venue. 'Pub grub-type food off a not-very-extensive menu - met our needs, but no more than that.

An amazing spot to enjoy Sunday Lunch. We visited on Easter Sunday and received a warm welcome by a member of staff in the bar area. The table we were given had lovely sea views and had plenty of space for four people. Service was quick and efficient and staff were attentive. The food was delicious especially the Roast Beef and Yorkshire Pudding. Would highly recommend a visit.

This place has now become our favourite place to get away too. A stunning location, fantastic food and very helpful and attentive staff. And as a bonus, amazing sunsets too. Highly recommended!

Was a busy day but no excuse . Waited a long while for food and when it arrived I had been given my sisters fish and chips , she had been given my vegan fish and chips . Thankfully she started first so discovered the error . Food was definitely not of usual quality and definitely not worth the money. Unhappy vegan

Wonderful roast on Easter Sunday, delicious food and fabulous service from Annabelle! Kids loved being given a little chocolate egg on arrival. Also a lovely old pub with great background tunes playing.

Really nice location and on the whole the food was really great and the waitress was very attentive and friendly. However we ordered 3x pasta with tomato sauce for the children and asked for one to have a slightly bigger portion which they ended up charging us double for….. so we ended up paying £32 for some penne pasta with tomato sauce on… which to me sounds a huge amount of money for such a basic meal and even then it did not fill my kids up!

We stayed here for two nights while walking two sections of the South West Coast Path. The communication, ease of booking (and the winter deal of two nights for the price of one, including breakfast) and service was fantastic. The staff were pleasant engaging funny and nothing was too much trouble. The coffees were spot on. Our beef roast was plentiful warm and delicious, and oh my word !!! The sticky toffee pudding was to die for. I had it both nights. They even let me have custard and ice cream. Then after two beautiful days walking and a belly full of great food we retired to a luxurious super king, super comfortable bed over looking hope cove. We stayed at Burgh Island hotel last year. For value, comfort and quality the Hope and Anchor far exceeds our experience across the bay. Thank you. We will definitely be back again in the future.

lovely staff. Crazy money for the meal. At least 5 dishes on the menu were not available and that includes beer. Sunday roast beef,1 slice of beef, Yorkshire pudding that was as big as the plate to make it look like the plate was full.Roast chicken was not piping hot and disappointing and basically everything over priced.what a shame in such a lovely location.

We enjoyed both the food and the service. The atmosphere was great and the evening was thoroughly enjoyable albeit not that easy to get there!

We came for a family Sunday lunch 5 adults and 4 children all with different choices from the menu. All meals arrived hot and together all were superb - staff were friendly and attentive and children were well catered for and entertained with board games provided in the pub. We were all had a great meal and felt well looked after. Thank you so much.

Went for Sunday lunch and it was delicious. They are amazing for gluten free, very informed staff and able to offer a gluten free menu and explain adaptations that can be made with specials where possible. Gorgeous place, great location by the sea and dog friendly!

We stayed for our wedding Anniversary in December. Lovely hotel and restaurant. Room was comfortable and clean and overlooked the sea. Lovely powerful shower. Delighted to find a coffee machine with nespresso pods in the room. Great location next to the sea although I would imagine parking would be a problem in high season. (Free unlimited parking if you can get a space Oct to April). Food was outstanding, we ate twice for dinner and breakfast also. Shout out to Dale who was very hospitable and helpful in telling us about the local area. Would definitely stay again.

We were very fortunate to choose the Hope and Anchor in Hope Cove as a location for a two night break. All we want to say about this hotel/Pub is exceptional. From the moment we arrived at this very very dog friendly hotel/pub the staff were super friendly and nothing was too much trouble. The room we had overlooked the beach in Hope Cove and everything was in the room that we needed including a toybox full of goodies for our Black Labrador. We ate in the restaurant on both evenings and the qulaity of food and service was excellent. The breakfast offering is also worth mentioning that it was of an equal quailty to the evening food and was quite clear that the products used were fresh and locally sourced. The location of the hotel/pub was excellent with excellent coastal walks on the doorstep. A big Thank You to all the staff for making our stay so memorable and we really hope to make a return trip in the future.

I would highly recommend staying here, James, Jess and the staff go the extra mile to make your stay great. We stayed in a family room for a Wedding recently. We struggled to get a taxi, so the staff stepped in to help us. The accommodation is clean and presentable. Location is great! amazing View.

We were a party of six, including two children and were warmly welcomed and shown to a very nice table upstairs. The staff were friendly and efficient and the food, mainly Sunday roast, was really tasty and plentiful. The pub was busy which meant we had to wait a while for our food but all worth it in the end. Thank you.

We always enjoy walking from Thurlestone over to Hope Cove for lunch at the Hope and Anchor. We often go out for Sunday lunch's and we the Hope and Anchor is one of the best for the food quality, friendly and accommodating staff. We highly recommend to anyone looking for a friendly pub with great food and atmosphere.

Disappointing given that this pub is No 1 on trip advisor with so many people rating it so highly. So many of the staff were unhelpful and seemed like they didn’t want to be there. The food was very average nothing to write home about. We wouldn’t recommend it

Had a lovely overnight stay at the Hope and Anchor for our wedding anniversary. Nice room with seaview, lovely friendly staff who could not have been more helpful - homely pub - good food - just an all round really enjoyable stay in a peaceful and unpretentious place. We ate here one evening and it was mediocre to be honest. Portions were a bit on the small size for the price but the beer and wine was nice. The pub has been fully renovated and is well appointed with various areas to sit and relax. I’d recommend a visit but don’t go out of your way.

We had a really lovely couple of days here, even though the weather was not brilliant on the first day we had a long walk and managed to dodge the showers. It is very dog friendly with a doggie box with treats in the room. Crystal loved the ball. We had a wonderful sea view room, which has a dramatic coastal view. Very comfortable bed, and lovely hot shower, a really spacious bathroom. We ate mainly in the bar, disappointed no chicken on the menu, as we had had a wonderful chicken supreme here before. The breakfast is amazing, great continental choices and hot food. The buttermilk pancakes with fruit compote is lovely. The walking, and the friendliness of the local people is exceptional. We enjoyed it so much have booked to return in September.

Discovered the Hope and Anchor and loved it. Really lovely friendly staff. The food was delicious, definitely recommend it. We can't wait to return. It was really sunny so we sat outside but can really imagine that its very cosy in the Winter.

Popped in for a drink on Friday evening to find all seating opposite the bar with reserved signs for locals from 6pm. This was very disappointing . Whilst lots of people don't actually live in Hope Cove they frequent the pub regularly , why is their money any less important than anyone else's ?. This creates a them & us situation & for visitors is very off putting . The staff are superb & always very friendly & efficient .. This scenario has really let the pub down & is hardly supportive of all round customer relations.

Randomly chose the Hope and Anchor for a Sunday lunch with my 92 year old mother, this is something I should have mentioned when booking as we were given an upstairs table which although gives a great view over the cove the stairs are not the easiest for her. The staff immediately gave a great welcome and that continued throughout the service. We both chose the roast beef which was delicious, I'd purposely forgone the starter as I had my eye on the rhubarb and apple crumbled, unfortunately not available so selected the rhubarb fool and o wasn't disappointed. This will be added to restaurants I recommend to friends visiting Devon.

Wonderful roast dinner and welcoming staff. Management seem passionate about building a good name and delivering a top service. Having had the Management reach out personally and take responsibility for a slight error shows that this pub is in very capable hands going forward!

Great location and a lovely hotel. We stayed in room 12, which was spacious, clean and a nice corner view of the beach. Dinner was enjoyable and would stay again. Great breakfast and staff are all professional and friendly. As nice as the dining experience is at the hotel, you can also find a good selection of eateries at Kingsbridge, about 15 minutes drive. Mill street is where there is a nice selection of restaurants and we dined at the Dream Turkish kitchen, which was delicious. Some great walks along the coastal part towards Salcombe, and although it was windy, it was still a lovely experience. We have previously been later in the year and the volume of tourists provides a different experience. If the weather is good and you enjoy walking with little to no encounters with other people, April is a good choice. The main car park beside the pub is NPR controlled so don't overstay; however, we parked from Friday 13:00, through to Sunday 13:00, and it was 16GBP.

We stayed here for the weekend, Its not only a perfect location for walking its a great atmosphere too. we found the staff friendly and couldnt do enough for us. The room was clean and had everything we needed including a really comfortable bed and lovely pillows. The food was great! we will definitely go back soon!

Arrived at a very busy time on Good Friday and stayed 3 nights. The staff couldn’t have been more helpful and patient with minor problems we encountered. Breakfast was magnificent.

Popped in with my husband and grown daughter for a quick evening meal and we all left having enjoyed our food and the atmosphere. The service was really good and the staff were all really friendly - we were greeted by every member of staff that passed our table. The atmosphere is really warm and welcoming and a lovely place to hide away from some of the rough weather that you get in Hope Cove. The only thing that I would say is that I feel that the food is slightly overpriced but really enjoyable,

Staff are really friendly and lovely atmosphere-however I ordered the crabby fries and was very disappointed, 9.50 for a tiny bowl of skinny fries sprinkled with a few flakes of crab (practically none) ,overpriced for what it was . I’m a local and sadly I’m not sure I’ll be returning as there are places which do much better.

Brilliant waiter, great food, fabulous view, overall a really happy experience. I took my sister to Hope Cove for the first time, and the Hope and Anchor helped make this a fabulous memory. (They also forgave us for being an hour late for the booked table!)

9 of us went for a family birthday Sunday roast, one of the tastiest and best roasts we’ve all had in ages. Proper home cooked food, the gravy was made with lots of love. Having been a regular at the Hope & Anchor for 25 years, I’ve seen this place through good times & bad. I’m delighted to see the new manager has turned things around. He was all over everything on Saturday night, the staff were great & the atmosphere happy. We went back for Sunday lunch which was superb. Really tasty & excellent quality. Served by the lovely Jazz, who the last time we went had to contend with a very unhappy table as over 6 of our meals had to go back and the then manager did nothing to support her. So pleased that this new manager is turning things back round and it looks like we will have a superb pub back again. Keep up the good work! A great team effort 👍

Superb meal. Both had fish (delicious fillet of hake) and chips - absolutely fresh, batter light and crisp, best I've had. Equally great - attentive but unobtrusive, checked all OK. We initially selected roasts (it was a Sunday) but by the evening they had sold out - a recommendation in itself. Second choice fish and chips did not disappoint. Thoroughly recommended - support the Hope and Anchor Hope Cove please !!

This was our second visit to the Hope & Anchor. The rooms are cosy and well appointed - with the window open you can hear the waves breaking on the beach. As before the staff are exceptional - breakfast is plentiful and service attentive and charming. Bar staff were also super efficient. Great base for walking or popping into Salcombe. I love visiting in the autumn - so peaceful!

We visited for Sunday lunch and were seated upstairs in The Lookout with a lovely view of the bay. Our dog was also welcome. I had the apricot and chestnut roast and my partner had the roast beef. Both were delicious and we had a lovely selection of vegetables including cauliflower cheese. The staff were lovely and friendly.

Great food. Friendly staff. DONT use the car park next door as lots of people are getting fines even though they have paid for their ticket. They then threaten with excess charges, court and bailiffs. Just google it.

This was our second winter visit and again we enjoyed our stay but not as much as previously. Our room was big and comfortable especially the super size bed made more relaxing by the sound of the surf. Obviously with food costs rising prices had gone up but unfortunately the food was not nearly as nice as previously so we went next door to the Cove for a couple of meals. Once again the staff were friendly and well motivated which makes the pub a pleasure to stay in. I drive an electric car and would love there to be a charger as there is a lack of working/fast ones in South Devon. We did a couple of good walks from the door. We’re looking forward to visiting again maybe when they have their half price offer!

We (couple in 50s and a dog) went on a Wednesday evening half term. Must have been an off night reading some of the other reviews. A shame as clearly they can do better from some people’s comments. Food was ok (not amazing but ok) but service was the let down. Don’t know if just under staffed or poor planning but booked a table ahead and still 25 mins from sitting down to even getting a drink order. Asked for ketchup and was given an empty bottle. Asked 3 times (by same waitress) If we wanted a dessert menu and then when my wife’s turned up we had to ask for a spoon which was plonked at the opposite end of the table. Had to remind twice for a glass of wine. Hopefully just an off night. I’d say maybe we were being fussy but gentlemen on the table next to us was apologising to his wife for picking the venue as well, for the same reason, so maybe not. Food was ok. Enjoyed the burger and the fish and chips although squid starter was a bit disappointing paying £9 for 6 small bits of squid.
