Very nice well managed hotel with a very welcoming bar/restaurant. Limited range of draught ciders but compensated for with bottled ciders. Lagers and Ale choice is good. Staff are very friendly and efficient, décor is very pleasing to the eye. Well worth a visit. Did not stay in Hotel, hence no comment on the rooms.

Had a couple of meals here and an excellent pint of Jail Ale. We booked for Sunday lunch which was OK, albeit cooler than I'd expected. Our meal.off the main menu earlier in the week was really good, so this was a little disappointing. Location next to river is great, but watch out for gulls who have learned that they can swoop and snatch...

This friendly pub is worth five stars for the view alone out over the picturesque river ! The food was excellent too, all properly home made, delicious and great quality. We shared a ginormous portion of very moorish nachos to start, which was luxuriously smothered in toppings. I had the Pork Tsatsiki for mains, while my other half went for (the excellent quality) homemade burger. I must say it was lovely to come across a menu with some flair and imagination ! The staff were lovely and friendly, and very efficient. There was a great sound track playing too ! All in all a five star experience. Tip: there is a small car park, and we were luckily enough to find a space. Having now been we know it will be well worth the short walk if you cannot fit your car in !

The Steam Packet Inn in Totnes, UK, is a pub and accommodation in a prime location on the banks of the River Dart, combining traditional charm with a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. With a history dating back centuries, the place has an authentic feel that is reflected in both its architecture and service. The restaurant's menu offers a variety of typical British dishes, with a focus on local and fresh produce. Favorites include fish and chips, and fresh seafood, which is especially recommended. The food is homemade and the portions are generous, all at a reasonable price. The pub also has a wide selection of local beers and wines, ideal to accompany your meal or simply enjoy a drink on its terrace overlooking the river. Accommodation at the Steam Packet Inn is equally welcoming, with well-appointed, clean and comfortable rooms. Most offer views of the river, which adds a special touch to the stay. The staff is very friendly and always happy to make recommendations on local activities or places to visit. In short, the Steam Packet Inn is an excellent choice for both a meal and a weekend getaway, offering a perfect combination of hospitality, good food and picturesque surroundings.

All and all pretty good all round. Staff very friendly and helpful. Quick service at the bar and good selection of drinks. Outside on the quay ample seating for everyone, especially nice when the sun shines. Restaurant is pleasant, soft music in background. Cruise leaves for Dartmouth directly opposite on other side of river, but you have to walk about 10 minutes over road bridge to get there. £18 per single. You can catch a bus there from just past the Seven stars for £2 per single. Likewise to Paignton. 92 bus for Dartmouth and Stagecoach Gold for Paignton. Look out for Bob's Hop on bus, bright yellow, just wave him down. Ideal round town, 50p or make a donation. WARNING. If you are dining outside be "very aware" that the Gulls ***wlill*** swoop and steal your food. The inn will give you a water pistol if you ask for one, but they have limited success. Best eat indoors or come prepared. We stayed in room 5. Nice room. Minor grouse, shower was a bit timid.. Highly recommended. Bit pricey but you get what you pay for.

A few months ago, I wrote a very negative review of the service element of this dining pub - in fact, I didn't eat there in the end, as I felt most unwelcome (when wanting breakfast during a house-hunting trip). I've now moved into the neighbourhood and, fair's fair, I now have cause to write a review at the other end of the scale! Last evening, I stopped by (with some wariness) for an impromptu dinner - and couldn't have had a better experience. Friendly and incredibly helpful, patient bar/serving staff went out of their way to adjust a menu to my specific needs; great food (I had the drippingly-delicious prawn linguine with a specially-created medley if green veg), and the view was as great as ever. Thank you so much for a super meal - I will return and recommend!

Can’t fault the location and it’s not the inn’s fault it was raining. Food was a bit underwhelming although the fish and chips was good. It did feel that we were an inconvenience and it’s really unclear that the restaurant and bar are not separate and there was confusion about entering the restaurant as didn’t think we should walk right in and were told off for being in the way. Lovely place but the food needs more work. Serving on fancy slate doesn’t make things taste better. Such a shame as all the reviews made it seem worth the visit. Would hazard a guess that a lovely sunny day makes a difference and you forget the food.

Quite disappointed, especially after seeing all the great reviews. The venue is beautiful, along side the river Dart. We waited 20 minutes in the restaurant to be served and then a further 50 minutes for our food to be brought out. It's wasn't busy (maybe 7 other people in the restaurant). Food was very average, service dull and the bill expensive. I don't mind paying, or waiting for excellence, unfortunately, we didn't receive anything close!! Previously had a lovely lunch at the Steam Packet Inn, Totnes so, after travelling a few hundred miles from Suffolk, thought I'd have breakfast here. Entered bar area at 9am - no other guests/customers around. Checked they were still doing breakfast (the board outside said they were) and whether I could have it outside at the tables on the terrace (view of R Dart). Fairly miserable-looking woman said I could have it in the bar area (cosyish but dark and no view) as otherwise places were reserved for their residents, who 'took precedence'. I hadn't seen anyone anywhere inside or outside on my way in, so I checked what she'd said was correct in this case, so she went off to 'ask the Manager'. After returning, she took me through to the large indoor restaurant area, overlooking the river, where there was literally no-one else! I thanked her and said it was a shame not to sit here if it was empty, but I really wanted to sit at the outside tables (also having zero customers) - was this possible. She repeated that this inside area is 'for residents in preference' but that I could take my menu etc outside if I ordered and collected my food from inside the bar - there would be no waiting service outside, which is only the other side of the restaurant glass wall. Whilst I can understand all this in high season or at other times when there are myriads of people around, I don't get it under today's conditions. Common sense and a desire to welcome and serve have gone awol. I've been sitting on Vire Island with my take-away breakfast (bought from some lovely local cafes - well done Curator coffee and Food for Thought), facing the Steam Packet, and there is still a dearth of customers. Their 'computer says no' attitude and lack of welcome and service will unfortunately make it unlikely I will revisit or recommend it when I move house to just up the road fairly soon. The dearth of customers, at least this potential local/regular one, is on the cards to continue.

It was a very busy Sunday just before Christmas. We hadn't booked, and there were four of us! We chose our drinks and waited on a comfortable settee by the fire. We didn't want a roast, something tasty to keep us going, and they delivered! We had to wait a few moments for a table to empty and be cleared and cleaned. In no time at all we were sitting choosing our dishes. The pub was very busy with lots of cheery atmosphere. The landlord was attentive and charming. We had squid, it was absolutely delicious, and one of our friends had a cheese dish. Which they shared with the squid, again delicious. We have been here before in the summer, it is always the same quality and service. Definitely 5*

The location is stunning, and on a hot day there is nothing better than having a drink looking over the river. I thought the food was really nice, the pot of crab, the mackeral pate and the hake were lovely. There was a nice selection of ales too. Staff were very accommodating and friendly, especially in the less busier times when they could relax a bit. A minor quibble: We ate lunch in the empty restaurant whilst everyone else were enjoying the sunshine. Another couple was brought through into the restaurant and were seated on the very next table. My partner and I both internally questioned whether this was necessary considering the place was still practically empty. Surely both parties would prefer a bit more space between them but as we're all British we stiffened up our upper lips and bravely soldiered on. I guess it was nice to hear about their travels to the Peak District - as I've always wanted to go.

We ordered our drinks and were going to order lunch too when our drinks arrived. After waiting 20mins, a lady serving checked and chased up our drink orders and said we could order our lunch when the drinks came. Another 15/20 minutes lapsed and still no drinks arrived (MEANWHILE, Several other people had arrived, and were well into their main courses). I'm generously giving two stars for the location and for the appearance of the food, but the lack of service really dampened our day. In a nice way, I let the man running the restaurant (who was also the one who took our drinks order) know that we were leaving and for what reason, and I will say he was very apologetic and admitted the service was just not good enough.

The Steam Packet Inn offers a uniquely warm and welcoming atmosphere. They are both people-friendly and dog-friendly: on Boxing Day we were given a lovely meal at a table next to a cosy fire, and the very first item we were given was a saucer full of little dog-treats for my Border collie, accompanied by a bowl of fresh water. Throughout the meal, we received regular visits from the owner to make sure that we were happy (we were!), and my collie greatly enjoyed the pieces of pork crackling that he slipped her under the table (with my permission, of course). The whole meal had a delightfully festive air, and we will return as often as possible! This is, in my opinion, by far the pleasantest place to eat in Totnes.

As a local I realised that we rarely visit The Steam Packet in Totnes. I felt this may have been because it is little tucked away and is the case of "out of sight, out of mind". After the lockdown I decided that I should try to support as many local businesses as possible so have visited for dinner with friends twice since. Sadly on both occasions we received disappointing customer service. The first time we put it down to the fact that they were fairly busy, although there is still no excuse for being rude! However, our second recent visit was on a very quiet evening, so no excuse there. After a very long wait to be seated at our table, with staff wondering around ignoring us, we were eventually seated. The young blond lady who took our order what particularly lovely and we were hopefully that maybe things had improved since our last visit, but we quickly were proved wrong when next served by two other dark haired waitresses, who were both very curt in their manor and made us feel like unwanted guests. It's such a shame as the venue has quite a nice setting and the food was good, but all six of us have vowed not to return again.I can see from other reviews that we are not alone. What a shame the management doesn't take the hint and train their staff to be more pleasant as they must be losing custom hand over fist.

Where to start. The first time we went in this summer (we are locals) we did manage to get seated after a very long and unnecessary wait. Staff frequently just wandering around ignoring people in the short but very time consuming queue to get in. When we were shown to a table the waiting service was uncoordinated to say the least. Again, a lot of aimless wandering and very little active looking to see if people needed serving. We waiting almost half an hour to have our drinks order taken and order desserts. The food when it arrived was lovely so we vowed to book and return. Putting this down to a one off bad day.I booked a table for the following week while I was still in the pub. I was advised that only inside tables inside were bookable but that if when we arrived there were tables available outside we would be able to have one.Fast forward to a week later and once I had waited to be seated, again an extremely long wait being ignored, I explained that we had booked but would like to sit outside if possible. This older lady host looked me up and down (literally!) and said I should have been told that if I booked I can’t sit outside. I explained what had been said and she said ‘well you have to go back outside and wait’. I clarified she meant to the front of the pub and she snapped ‘yes’ and shooo’d me away!I went out to the front to wait. During the 15 minutes we stood there like complete lemons I could see several parties shown through to the outside area and be given empty tables ( of which there were several). We decided to leave without trying to communicate again. I feel that ‘host’ was actually just enjoying the small amount of power she was able to exert over customers in the current difficult situation. We live around the corner and eat/ drink out several times a week but absolutely never in this place any more. Every other establishment we have visited in Totnes this year has handled the current situation in a far more professional and friendly manner. I’d rather give them my business.

Myself and my girlfriend went here for lunch after a lovely day in Totnes. Things were obviously slower due to covid, a few members of staff apologised about the wait only to get approached by a very rude, arrogant female. I am exempt from a mask as I'm pregnant and also have breathing problems, this was grimaced at. Whilst trying to decide where to sit (inside or outside as the weather was a bit temperamental) this member of staff explained-quite curtly-once we were seated we couldn't move. This was fine as it was obviously under new guidelines. I stated the whole thing was a bit ridiculous... I was implying the vauge rules set out by the government(I said this with a smile). This member of staff was incredibly rude saying she took great offence and tried to argue with us. We decided to go elsewhere, whilst literally walking out of the door past two new customers walking in, she shouted "I think u'll find it's the same anywhere you go!! " We had been to two other establishments in Totnes that day and the staff were lovely, polite and very helpful. Was very disappointing to be 'greeted' by such a rude and unfriendly member of staff and unfortunately won't be returning. We've always had a lovely time here, with friends and family, but this was nothing short of a rather aggressive and obnoxious experience.

Throughout are stay the staff were attentive and always made us feel welcome. I would like to give a special thank you to Becky are server as she was always friendly and made sure our dogs had lots of biscuits . Will be back again soon

My wife and I just visited this pub, we thought we’d have a drink or two sitting outside enjoying the weather, when we arrived we asked to sit outside the lady said there was no tables and said we can sit inside, no problem, we sat down, within one minute another couple came in and asked to sit outside, they hadn’t booked but was shown to a table straight away, then another couple turned up asking to sit outside, again they hadn’t booked but was shown to an outside table straight away, we couldn’t even ask to move tables as it’s made clear when you go in that once seated you cannot move table because of COVID 19, the staff are all like robots just walking around with long faces, there is no atmosphere in this pub, once our glasses were nearly empty we was approached and asked if we wanted another drink, obviously I said no thanks, even if it was on the house I wouldn’t have taken it, I then asked for the bill, I was shocked to see I had been charged £8 for a small 200ml bottle of Prosecco, that’s a joke, I come from South London so am used to paying premium prices for my drink but I don’t pay that much in central London, I wouldn’t recommend this place, or maybe we was just unlucky, maybe they didn’t like the look or sound of us...

My mum has been here before on a number of occasions, so invited me to join her for lunch today. We arrived at 11am and asked to reserve a table outside for midday - we were told they're given on a first come first served basis, so came back at 12.15 & managed to get one.It was in the shade and quite cold, so we asked a waiter if we could move to a table in the sun that we could see was now available. We were promised that we could sit there, but needed to wait for it to be sanitised. We waited for 10 minutes, only for the same waiter to then tell us we couldn't have the table after all because a regular customer had turned up so they would be having the said table (?!) We actually knew of these "regular" customers, and are aware that they live just around the corner - however, this should not be a reason to prioritise over other customers. Needless to say, we left very disappointed, without ordering any food or drinks. I was really looking forward to what would have been my first experience with you after my mum had recommended it. I have worked in the same restaurant for 18 years, and not once promised a customer something they can't have. We do not favour regular customers over any other. It should have been first come first served - as YOU told us.

This evening I stood by your reception where you have Signs saying wait here until seated for a good 5 to 10 minutes with several people working in the pub that didn’t acknowledge me I was invisible eventually I asked did anybody see me and asked if there was a table free in the garden of which I had seen one free before I arrived and was told it would need sanitising and wouldn’t be available for 20 minutes so I don’t understand why it takes 20 minutes to sanitise the table so we asked if we could sit at the table outside the back door which apparently is smoking area and were told no terrible service bad attitude Definitely wouldn’t recommend it

Wanted to have tea and a drink . Got shown to a table given a track and trace a menu and that was it. We filled our track trace in and then after 10 minutes put on it, was ignored as people around us got served ..not happy as we had chosen what we wanted to eat, noone took any notice even though people around us was served. Following the rules we stayed put. Waiting to be served. Got up and left. Noone even notice.

We went to this pub restaurant a couple of times now, once in winter and once in the summer and both times we have been very happy. The pub inside is very pleasant, traditionally decorated with a modern feel at the same time, the ambience is cosy and warm and the food is very good. Sat outside on our last visit this summer and love it: sat by the water front you could see Totnes beautiful buildings, the peaceful green island and the river Dart - it felt like we were on holiday on one of our Scandinavian trips! The menu is also very appealing: the starters or light plates are delicious and quite large in size, my husband had mussels and it was plentiful, I had a halloumi salad which again was very filling. There was a good choice of main courses and looked very good. We will definitely go back.

Turned up on a Monday lunch without booking and despite Eat Out to Help Out was seated outside by friendly staff, we all enjoyed great burgers and drinks and the staff were excellent. A great little pub by the river, don't miss out.

We have just stayed for three nights at the Steam Packet Inn in one of their new family rooms with two of our children. The room was so beautifully appointed and it was so lovely to have a suite where the boys were with us but in their own bedroom off ours! Felt as though we had a lot of space. The bathroom was lovely too and the view across the quay were amazing! We had a few meals at the pub which were very good and we found all the staff to be really friendly and kind. They were really happy to help us in anyway that they could. Would recommend it to any families that need a comfy, friendly, relaxed getaway!

We went on a Friday lunchtime, lucky to get a table inside in the bar as the weather wasn’t great, although it would be nice outside on a good day.3 of us all had plaice main course and they were superb, following crab cake starters.

This pub used to be my local years ago, and with the 'eat out to help out' scheme we wanted to have a nice meal here this week. Looking at their website to see if we needed to reserve a table I tried phoning them a few times but the line was constantly busy. I then sent a facebook message asking if I needed to reserve a table - only to receive an automated response suggesting I email. I then emailed... ironically 3 days later still have had no reply. Phoned them again a few times, eventually getting a recorded message saying to phone after 3pm. Phoned after 3pm, spoke to someone who sounded quite miserable over the phone and he said that outdoor tables were 'first come first served' basis only. Turned up at 6:45pm that evening - couple of families waiting for a table so I approached the bar/lectern and was told that "we are really busy and there will be a long wait for a table outside"... I enquired how long and was told 15-20 minutes. Asked if I needed to put my name on a list or take my surname and was told "no I'll recognise your face". So left the pub to try to find a place to park the car. Admittedly was longer than 15-20 minutes but returned to find another couple in the queue who had booked a table inside but wanted to sit outside - they were shown to a table. The same staff member I saw earlier then came back to the lectern/bar area and asked if she could help. I mentioned about the table and was abruptly told that they were very busy, and no tables would be free for the rest of the evening. Oddly enough nothing was said about the indoor table which the couple in front of me had just vacated when they moved to the outside table. And so much for the "I'll recognise your face" as that staff member didn't appear to be operating any system for allocating tables on a first come first serve basis.Felt very unwelcome and I doubt we will go back, whether as part of the eat out to help out scheme or at any other time of the year - which is a shame because we live just outside Totnes and this is a pub we have eaten at as a family in the past, and I have fond memories of it being my local in my late teens/early twenties. But there are plenty of other places to eat in Totnes and certainly other establishments provide a warmer greeting and appear to be better organised at managing their tables.

On arrival we were concerned that no staff were wearing masks but decided to stay as we had eaten here before and knew it was good.We were asked where we would like to sit and we said that we would like to sit outside but were going to eat later so could we move inside then? We were told that wouldn't be a problem as it was early. We were taken to a sofa by the river and ordered our drinks. They took a while to arrive but no problem. After we had finished these we asked if we could move to a proper table to order food but were told that we were not allowed to move! I explained that we had previously asked but were told that this was incorrect and no way could we move, even to another table outside. As it was our anniversary we didn't fancy eating on our laps so we left. It's their loss as we would have splashed out a bit for our special occasion. The service was very slow and a bit haphazard, one young girl kept saying she was new and didn't know what's what! They talked about sanitising tables when anyone left but it was shown a bit of spray, that's all. The cushions on our sofa were filthy. Won't be returning.

We visited on a Friday evening as a group of five, and the manager was great, really friendly, making you feel relaxed and welcomed. Most of us chose burgers or veggie burgers, while one had a gammon steak. For dessert, we had banoffee pie, morello cherry tart, white chocolate rocky road, and lemon meringue pie. Everything was delicious. Highly recommended!

I agree with alot of the negative reviews. I have gone to the cafe for about 20 years and it has so gone downhill. Staff generally are not customer focussed and friendly and take customers for granted. They are inattentive and slow. They are not doing us a favour attending, we are the customers. There are plenty of other places where people ear and you are loosing custom.

Went for lunch which was overpriced for what it was. Husbands chair was over a significant drain hole which his chair leg fell down and dislocated his finger. The problem is a, the hole pit is not covered. B, after staff notified nothing was done and didn’t seem to care or react in any way. Many older people with aides there and can do some serious damage hence the review.
