Came across this pub while having a walk around The Lane, made to feel very welcome by the staff who were friendly and appreciated you visiting their pub We went to order food, where the bar staff were very apologetic that the kitchen has closed for an hour - never mind one of those things We decided to visit some more pub in the area and oh what a mistake we made, one smelt of wet dogs the other the bar staff really weren’t interested if you visited or not We decided to return to the Hop Poles at which time the kitchen had opened there were different staff on but again they were very friendly. Proper pub. Nice beer. Love it.

Nice pub in the centre of town. I often forget about it as it's a little tucked away. It can get busy on the weekends but overall it's never too bad. The beer selection is decent. It's relatively small in size but does have a good outdoor bit out the back.

Terrible experience with the DJ where he is lucky not being arrested for abuse. Awful evening. Shame on you! Never again

However, I came to this pub on Saturday night, albeit a little late. I was accused of being thrown out the previous weekend (I don’t live in Brighton, I was down for a friends birthday). I know age has nothing to do with it but I have successfully navigated many pubs in my life and frankly the management of this pub should be dismissed but an incredibly heavy handed attitude to ‘faces/Clothes that don’t fit’. Do not go here if you want to have fun

Nice pub but the bloke behind the bar was nasty and rude! Accused my friend of being on drugs because she has a facial condition after having a stroke last year, not that its anyones business and she certainly didnt have to explain herself to him! She was mortified and we had to walk out and leave our mates to finish their drinks which split the group up and tatally killed the rest of the night! We got served in 4 others pubs after that without an issue! Yes we had a few but thats what you do on a night out but we were certainly respectful. Not all disabiities are clear! Your staff need retraining in this area clearly!

I understand that inflation is here and the pre-pandemic world isn't coming back, but £7.15 for a pint of domestic ale (Neck Oil) is laughably egregious. I can't fault anything else about the experience, but the pub itself is by all means average so I'm not sure what warrants the price. I'm shocked that anyone puts up with these prices, must be people with more money than sense.

Really friendly staff and even catered their menu to the diet I'm currently following. Highly recommended.

I've read a number of reviews saying the same thing about this place, that there is an issue with a particular member of the door staff and one of the managers which was entirely my experience too. I've been to the hop poles now and then over the last 25 years. For me it's a fairly average pub, not at the top of the list but not at the bottom either, nothing special inside but nice sitting out on the back terrace in the summer and open late. It's part of the Indigo chain who own around 20 pubs in Brighton so for me an independent pub is always my preference over a chain but nonetheless it can be an okay bar if you want a late drink. On this particular occasion there was a young doorman there who just seemed to want to rub everyone up the wrong way and had got carried away on some sort of power trip working on the door and was already having an argument with 2 other customers when I arrived. I was there around 1am to meet a large mixed group who had been there for a number of hours to celebrate a birthday. This doorman wouldn't let me enter even though I wasn't drunk and was polite and just politely asked to join the group I was there to meet. I asked to speak to the manager but the doorman refused and said that he'd baselessly decided I wasn't coming in so that was that and I couldn't question it in any way or ask for any other opinion because apparently he was God and made all the decisions for the bar. Bear in mind I'm nearly 50, I'd been working that evening so had come out to join the group late, I'm quite a relaxed guy and the only ever time I can recall having any sort of minor falling out with a doorman was about 30 years previously when I was drunk on my 21st birthday so I really wasn't out to cause any problem! If they weren't going to let me in then I was going to wait outside because the entire group I was there to meet had decided they were going to finish their drinks and leave as a result of this doorman. However the doorman and another member of staff who I think was either the manager or assistant manager became quite aggressive when I refused to move away from the street at front of the pub. I pointed out it was a public street which they didn't own and I had just as much right as anyone else to stand there, that I was calm, I wasn't trying to argue, I wasn't causing any obstruction, I wasn't even interested to talk to them, I was quite happy to go to another bar as there were many in the area and I was just standing there minding my own business waiting for my friends so we could all go somewhere else. They became very aggressive, really getting in my face, threatening and intimidating as much as possible insisting they had powers and rights that they absolutely didn't have which I wasn't buying because I knew it wasn't true so wasn't standing for it. As long as you're off their property they can't legally touch you any more than any other member of the public can and if they do using any sort of physical force it's assault and you can call the police and potentially they'll be arrested. Our group would have stayed there until closing time buying drinks if it hadn't been for this doorman and the general aggression level and treatment by him and the other member of staff means we'll take our custom elsewhere in future. Brighton has 300+ pubs there's really no need to come to this one and sadly it does seem to have gone downhill with the recent change of management.

You can then take them to court or they'd have to pay you an out-of-court settlement figure as a result because you can't just attack members of the public because they're standing outside your bar any more than you could attack someone walking past your house. Our group would have stayed there until closing time buying drinks if it hadn't been for this doorman and the general aggression level and treatment by him and the other member of staff means we'll take our custom elsewhere in future. Brighton has 300+ pubs there's really no need to come to this one and sadly it does seem to have gone downhill with the recent change of management, it really hasn't been a good vibe the last few times I've been there. I'd advise anyone in this sort of situation to video the incident, write public reviews detailing your experience, don't let them threaten and bully you for just standing on a public street and if there's any sort of physical element to their attack when you're off their premises then call the police because they've broken the law. These people are employees of a private company, they're not above the law so don't let them get away with it. We won't be back and there are at least 5 other late-opening bars in the immediate area so there's really no need to go to this place

Appalling! The Security member of staff was so high he couldn't string a sentence together. Not a place I would visit again, ever. Security are there to keep you safe and well. Not at this venue. Shocking!

I've been to this place many times over 20 years, so it was disappointing to experience an aggressive, confrontational doorman who seemed to want to fall out with people for no reason. He needs removing if the pub wants to keep its customers.

It's a bit meh expensive and not accessible

They don't do food anymore which was a real disappointment as I used to love the food here. Staff were friendly and the pub was looking a bit smarter however the building site next to the garden isn't the best view.

Great place to share with friends, drink beers and have a chat. There is a place for smokers or for the ones that like to enjoy fresh air once inside.

Small pub with a large garden area in the heart of the south lanes. Plenty of craft beers available as well as your normal array of drinks. The outside area is really great, sheltered with heaters so perfect all year round.

We went to Shuffle after a meal for my birthday. The bar tenders were great and good fun. We managed to go on a night where it was 241 cocktails which was brilliant. The theme of the bar with you being able to pick the music was good but the selection itself was a bit limited but maybe it will expand? We had a few drinks here before heading off and would go back again :)

We had a lovely traditional Sunday roast and all the trimmings at this nice cozy and welcoming pub. The Bloody Mary was also excellent and finely balanced with the right level of spice! 👌

Cozy interior, nice music, low prices for drinks, friendly staff and quick service. Everything you need to start a good night out. A place totally recommended if you find yourself near. Enjoy

We ate here on Sunday and the jazz in the background is a selling point. The staff are also very attentive and welcoming, however, I wasn't overly impressed by the food. Being in brighton I expected the prawns for starter to be plump and large but they were actually tiny with little flavour and seemed to be frozen ones rather than fresh. The beef was nice but I was a little underwhelmed by the veg. The desserts were better but the fruit salad was mostly orange and apple and I would have liked a bit more variety. If you are staying at the hotel this is a good choice if weather isn't great but I wouldn't recommend to travel for the lunch which is a pity as the staff are really great.

Bar staff here are so lovely and the food was unbelievably good. Classic pub food but with really interesting twists and bold flavours. Came for a meal with a big group of friends and the first words out of everyone’s mouth after the first bite was “wow” and then pure silence after that. Highly recommend !

Turned away for having a disability and told my excemption vertificate was not recognised under company policy. I cannot comment on atmosphere, the meal, the drinks, the service, etc, as I did not have the opportunity to experience it. I brought my friend here for a quiet drink and I have an exemption certificate. I have never had any issues in ANY other establishment I have visited and have only ever been met with respect and kindness up to the point I went to the Hope Poles. I was told I could not be a customer as it was company policy not to recognise exemption certificates. I calmly told the manager this was in breach of the Disability Act and the Government advice too. I was told it wasn't his problem as he didn't own the pub. But I am afraid as a manager, he is duty bound, as the Equality Advisory Service inform me, to not breach the Disability Act and as a service provider, ensure ALL can access the service he provides regardless of disability. He cannot turn away people because they are unable to meet the rules that HE or the owner have made up to suit THEM. And that is a fact. If they were taken to court, they would almost certainly lose and have to pay compensation. What about young children? Deaf people who have to lip read? There are so many conditions (including mine) which need understanding. All I had to do was walk 5 steps to a table then I would be allowed to take a mask off anyway. This pub or chain of pubs is breaching section 15 and 19 of the Disability Act 2010 and this is actually very serious. I have started the ball rolling with Brighton and Hove Council who are very concerned and also with the Equality Advisory Service. What these guys are doing is actually not allowed, bordering on the illegal and it is important we stand up to all forms of discrimination.

Had a lovely couple of drinks in this place served by a super friendly bar team. Dog friendly and a nice little space out back to enjoy on a sunny day. We didn’t eat there but a friendly local advised us the food was very good so we will be coming back for sure. Thanks for a great experience. The dogs loved it too! Take care

We went for drinks this afternoon and had a great time.We sat outside and there are heaters so can keep warm.The guy who served us was just brilliant. Really friendly and helpful. As it was not super busy we did not have to wait for a drink.Didn't have food but the menu look good at a reasonable price.

Traveled down for the day from London. Was very disappointed, Poor food met by an arrogant server. Poor service and no manager in sight.

Very disappointed to be blatantly discriminated against for being exempt from wearing a face covering. As the one person in my group not wearing a facemask, and also displaying an exemption badge, I was shocked at the attitude of the manager who refused to allow my family to dine. I explained the law to him regarding this matter and was basically told, it didn't matter and that they did not accept exemptions as it was company policy.Despite feeling humiliated and predudiced against, I offered to pull my fleece over my face till we got the few meters to the table and was told I couldn't as it wasn't a face mask.I have eaten here many times before, but sadly never will again due to the disgraceful way I was treated and I urge people to boycott this companies premises based on their discriminatory policies.You should be ashamed.

Worse service I’ve ever experienced, waited hours for a drink, staff were then very rude, his name was supposedly Joe, he had curly brown hair

Have been here before and although the service was slow the staff were kind and apologetic, but went for a second time and the staff were rude. We were told that someone would come to the table and we waited over an hour and in the meantime tried to kindly attract their attention but got told off about doing so as if we were in a school rather than them being apologetic. Let’s set the scene of a load of bar staff crowded round and chatting, not preoccupied ignoring every table. It’s a real shame because I liked this pub but now the rude staff have put all my friends off the place.

Looking for a pub in Brighton that sells good beers and a tasty light lunch. This really hit the mark. It had lovely beer selection and tasty wraps. We sat in the garden that had heat lamps. Really recommend

Buena comida y buen ambiente en una tranquila noche de miércoles, tuvimos una reunión de cumpleaños muy relajada y, después de unas copas, nos dijeron que no podíamos beber más. Después de varios intentos de tener una conversación razonable con la gerencia, no pudieron justificar por qué no pudimos continuar quedándonos.Situación muy confusa y perturbadora que parecía completamente innecesaria considerando que nos habíamos llevado tan bien con el personal de antemano.Quizás alguien estaba pasando una mala noche, pero esa no fue una experiencia agradable.

Great food and service, really nice people. Nice looking place, with a large outdoor very pleasant area, which also has rain cover mechanism, expands over the whole area. Never seen anything like it.

Nos recibieron en la puerta y nos llevaron a nuestra mesa que estaba afuera. Tuvimos que tomar una foto del menú de comida en nuestro teléfono que era amigable con COVID. Fue el servicio de mesa que era agradable. Ambos pedimos el pollo frito sureño de suero de leche y la envoltura de salsa de tomate casera que venía con papas fritas y guarnición de ensalada, ¡fue sorprendentemente encantador en realidad! Last night we decided to go to this pub for a few drinks. Firstly, the staff were very unwelcoming not even a hello, just demanded for our ID. Secondly, the payment did not go through (not our fault), the women barely even gave me and my friend a chance to check which card didn’t go through. Rudely accused one of us, as “we had the corona”, once again not our fault. Then to my disbelief I see the member of staff walk back the bar, and proceed to bad mouth us and making us so uncomfortable we decided to finish our drink and leave. It was a real shame, as we were very excited to try out this pub as it had such good reviews and looked lovely.

Pedí una hamburguesa y después de esperar 35 minutos y preguntar qué estaba pasando, me dijeron que la cocina no había recibido un boleto y que la comida duraría cinco minutos, después de explicar que tendría que volver al trabajo en los próximos 20 minutos. . Intentamos darle una propina, pero ella se negó diciendo que le pagan y que realmente disfruta su trabajo. . . ¡y eso nos muestra!Sin duda volveremos a comer aquí de nuevo!

We come to the Hop Poles as often as possible on a Sunday for the delicious roast. We used to be loyal to the Lion & Lobster but after a roast here it’s hard to go anywhere else. Since the refurb we’ve noticed it gets a lot busier and the food can take a bit longer however it is worth the wait. I usually go for the Crispy Pork Belly which is gorgeous. The potatoes and cooked perfectly and the Yorkshire is huge. We always get the Truffle Cauliflower Cheese which is unreal. And they’re not tight on gravy like some restaurants. I would definitely recommend a visit.

Had delicious lunch at the Hop Poles. Arrived early as the place was just opening but guy behind the bar gave us a nice welcome.For lunch we chose the Fish and Chips and the Vegetable Wellington and both were excellent.And the lady who brought our meals was truly lovely. Actually chatting with her made our day really special!

I went here to meet family and friends for a birthday lunch on a saturday, the table being pre booked the day or so before.They welcomed a larger group of 8 of us including my children from 12:30 of which we stayed for about 2-3hrs while the venue got busier and busier.The food was awesome! Full of flavour and exactly what we wanted.I ordered the hallumi and chips and the portion was large, perfectly cooked and exactly what i wanted for my birthday! It was soooo tasty!All my birthday guests were pleased with their meals too! We ordered a varied selection of food and all was perfectly cooked and tasty!I know we arrived not long after the venue opened and ive noticed that other reviews have noted that their meals took a while to arrive but i felt that our order took the right amount of time for perfection to be delivered to our larger table! All hot and amazing in flavour and presentation.My girls both ordered a dessert after which was eaqualy amazing!We all left feeling rather stuffed!Well worth the money!Our food was delivered by one of the kitchen workers, she was friendly, funny and an all round lovely lady!The bar staff were very accomadating, especially as i work in the bar trade and my friends are all bar staff!...we all know what a handfull bar staff can be when out and about!??!(They were all very well behaved!)The whole experience was amazing and i had an awesome birthday! Thankyou all at the hop poles!Youre all great!

Found this place when out for a walk called in for just a quick drink didn’t want to leave a very warm and friendly place to go Staff are 100% genuine friendly people. Good choice of drinks would recommend

If you're American and plan on paying for your drinks with a card, don't go here. If you have cash, great, pay them a visit. But if you don't, your American Cards will be denied. I tried to pay with three of my cards, my corporate card, my personal card and my bank card All my cards have more than $10K available at this current moment. All 3 financial establishments have been called in advance to be notified of travel, none of my cards has ever been declined before. AND all 3 cards have been used on this trip already!!! I've used my corporate, personal and taken cash on my ATM card in the past 48 hours. The hop and poles service was fine, nothing against them, but obviously their financial merchant is not accepting american payments, so unless you want to have to run around the neighborhood looking for an ATM while your corporate clients wait in the bar for you get a valid form of payment, I would avoid this place and visit one of Brighton's other fine drinking establishments that I've visited during the past 10 years. Sorry, but they need to talk to their credit card processor or call it "cash only".

On holiday in Brighton and visited this pub on the recommendation of my brother, we just intended to have a drink and then go somewhere for food. There is a lovely outside area at the back with heaters for chilly evenings and we settled down out there for a drink, the menu was on the table and we noticed ‘daily specials’ which sounded very good so we ordered food. Unfortunately they had sold out of seafood risotto so I had halloumi with chips and salad and my friend had slow roasted belly pork with mash and vegetables which were both very tasty and a reasonable price. Would really recommend this place, good atmosphere, lovely food and helpful staff. Would like it if smokers had designated tables so I wasn’t sat next to a smoker when eating but this was solved when they moved off before we ordered.

Super bon pub. Dans la tradition anglaise. On y mange copieusement et on y boit de très bonnes bières. Ambiance sympa. Tout y est!

We were looking for a place for a late afternoon bite when we stumbled and decided upon “The Hop Poles”, after screening so many places to choose from in The Laines. We really enjoyed this establishment; good food and excellent value. It was Monday, and their special was 2 burgers for £15, while “the going rate” for just a burger seemed to be around £9-10 apiece. Were were pleasantly surprised to find our meal included fries, a small “spring mix” salad and a small scoop of coleslaw. The ground beef (gently seasoned with worcestershire, it seemed) was excellent, a very lean cut, and it was dressed with tomato, pickle, lettuce etc. The bun had nice grill marks on it as well. I had a pint of a craft pilsner as well (£4.50).

Another.fab roast.dinner. i had the beef. My.daughter as.always.the.pork. huge.yorshire puddings home cooked roasties. All cooked by a fantastic asian lady. Do not miss oit if you are in brighton. Nice.pub and outside garden now aswell.

Consigliata da un amico che ha vissuto qui a Brighton sono andata in questo pub. L'atmosfera devo dire che è molto bella, il cibo e la birra sono buoni, consigliatissimo!

Nunca he comido allí, pero he estado algunas veces para tomar algunas bebidas y siempre ha habido un gran ambiente. Clientes jóvenes y de mediana edad, buena música, bastante ocupados, pero no demasiado. Siempre hay una manera de encontrar un asiento. También es encantador, supongo, porque no es demasiado grande, lo que lo convierte en un lugar muy encantador. Estaré allí de nuevo pronto.

Ubicado en South Laines (Middle Street) y aunque no es un gran pub, también tiene un ambiente acogedor. La gente que acaba de tomar una bebida se mezcla con los que se aprovechan de la comida. La elección decente de cervezas de barril pero oh mi, la comida. ¡GUAUU! He estado aquí unas cuantas veces con amigos y familiares para un asado y no puedo felicitarlos lo suficiente. Hay algunos establecimientos en Brighton y Hove que dicen que sirven el mejor asado. No, aquí está la gente.

Se aceptan perros pub con gran ambiente comida y bebidas. Visité con un grupo de 4 personas y tuvimos nuestro perro amigos. Tuvimos una comida de sábado por la noche y el menú era excelente. Buena opción para vegetarianos y comedores de carne. Tenía eglefino con puré de papas y verduras y estaba delicioso. Gran ambiente agradable personal de comida y lo recomendaría y volvería

A las 6: 15 pm de un jueves, me sorprendió que me dijeran que solo podríamos tomar una cerveza en un vaso de plástico cuando otros en el pub tenían vasos adecuados. Mi grupo estaba sobrio, más de 60 y nos comportamos. Fuimos a otro lugar y nos trataron como adultos. El personal aquí fue grosero y crítico, así que perdimos nuestra costumbre.
