The Honest John Bar & Coffee Tavern in Calderdale

I absolutely love this place! Its small but packs a mighty meal! Very nice staff and reasonable prices if I ever go back to Todmorden, it's the 1st place I will go. They have fantastic soups, lunch, and dinners plus a full bar in a nice atmosohere!

Great place, been a couple of times now. The place has a great atmosphere with an open fire. Mod-cons with a table button system, very friendly staff and the cheese and onion pie is delicious. I highly recommend 🍻🥧👍

First time there to celebrate our wedding anniversary. Service was excellent, food was outstanding, atmosphere was great and most of all it was value for money. Totally recommend this place.

The tables were dirty had to ask someone to come and wipe it she did and squirted the cleaning solution into my eye . Food warm not hot and chicken kebab had pink bits in the middle and a lovely black curly hair stuck on it. Been up since 3am vomiting and diarrhea . Wrote review yesterday on Google but as I'm still feeling sick I've decided to put it on here . £35 for the two kebabs and 2 coffees which we had to pay upfront so couldn't even refuse to pay. Dreadful food Dreadful cleanliness careless waitress and inattentive staff avoid if you don't want unhygienic food and tables.

Very disappointed. Visited today and had to sit outside as they couldn't fit us in inside apparently. We went outside all tables and chairs not in the gazebo were wet through . So went into gazebo all tables dirty and sticky , asked for it to be cleaned waitress came out and squirted table with.cleaner on jet setting not spray went all over me and in my eyes. She apologised and disappeared my eyes streaming and sore. Food came Luke warm and there was a curly black hair stuck on my chicken , nobody came to ask if everything was OK and we had to pay before food came so couldn't even refuse to pay for mine . I ate few chips husband ate some of the salad and we left . Not a great experience from start to finish .won't return have taken photos but no option to share

Visited for lunch on a weekday. A lovely dining space in a converted former bank. All three of our main courses were delicious. The cheese and onion pied, mushy pea and mash one was memorable. Great service and selection of drinks.

All three of our dishes were great. Loved the pie and mash dish and the salad with mountain of tasty humous. The ploughman's was also excellent. Friendly and helpful service. Very good bar. Interesting building too. Highly recommended.

Whilst in Todmorden on holiday we visited for dinner with friends. We were highly impressed with the venue, atmosphere and food. The list of cocktails was extensive and well priced and the service was excellent. We were so impressed that we went back a second time a few days later and took our son who has coeliac disease. His dietary needs were catered for well and we left having had a great time. If we lived closer we would definitely be regulars!

How have we never noticed this place before? We wanted tasty Greek style food and we weren’t disappointed, bringing back some good memories of past holidays & future ones to come later in the year. Friendly staff, lovely atmosphere & better still the prices are very reasonable. Will definitely be back ! Well done.

The food was bad, cheap ingredients like olives, not real feta. We had k mixed grill and the chicken was dry. The spice was the same on everything . The service was unpleasant, we felt unwelcome . It is disappointing because we went for the first time few months ago and it was lovely. We would not go back

This is a great place to eat. The food was excellent and the staff are very friendly. I had a hanging mixed grill kebab and can highly recommend it. I definitely will be back again next time I'm visiting.

We had a brilliant experience at the Honest John yesterday. We ate here as a group of family and friends on my cousin’s hen do. The food was delicious and the staff were so friendly and accommodating. It was the perfect way to round off our weekend and we would highly recommend this place to anyone.

such a wonderful spot! 😍 the menu is great, something for everyone and a fab mixture of vegan, gluten free and meat. they do matcha which is always a plus from me 🍵 plus cbd option (they were out today but will come back for it!) i got the hummus salad and the portion was extremely generous, and gorgeous hummus too 🧡

Went to Honest Johns for a late lunch, about 3 pm, on Friday, 26th July, and found the place almost empty. We were shown to a small table by a member of staff, close to the bar, but I asked if we could sit by a window. I should like to stress that there were no reserved notices on any of the tables. The person who greeted us said, "no, I'm afraid not!" "Why?" I asked, but he didn't reply! I cannot therefore, review my experience of this place other than to say, we were not served. I have mentioned this to save others from the humiliation of this experience and say, that neither myself or my family will be visiting again.

Nice greek restaurant Came here while staying at Yorkshire and was a lovely place to go with my family! I would recommend as it has some good greek food!

Called in over the weekend. It was our second visit and much like the first visit, it was excellent. Food when it came was delicious, and we didn't wait long. The drinks were spot on. Staff were very friendly. A great place in the town centre food. Will call again in the future.

Visited Honest John's for lunch and wasn't disappointed. All the portions were cooked fresh and were large. My sister had a lovely Greek salad, my brother in law had three dishes from the Meze menu which were garlic mushrooms, stuffed peppers and a prawn dish which he said were all tasty and filling. I had a large gyros sandwich which was too filling. Good value and will be back.

Came for the first time and we’re not disappointed. Thought the place, menu, food and staff were great. Will be returning!

Really friendly staff, very fast service for both food and drink. Being dog friendly is a big bonus. Frozen cocktails are a winner too! Definitely recommend booking as it can get busy. Table service makes the whole experience feel much more relaxed. Best gluten free flatbread I've ever had. Had to double check it was gluten free because it was that good.

Interesting environment in an old bank. The warm welcome was not just for us but the dogs too, complete with a treat for them. Lovely to encounter such a welcome for us all. Good coffee too in a large beaker and hot. So many places you find it's only luke warm. Really enjoyed the whole experience. Thank you.

called yesterday for lunch after a lovely 5mile walk from mytholmroyd along the canal been reccomended by friends seated quickly love the table service buttons we both ordered skepasti so tasty and filling really good great staff

The ploughman's and pie with peas were really delicious and beautifully presented. Great idea to have the bell on the table to get the waiters attention. 🤕 The bad - I ordered a side of lemon potatoes - v small and 5.95. Totally crazy. The menu is on the steeper side. The pie should come with chips included in the price. Lpts to choice from but not much variety...and very little choice for vegetarian and very little for vegans. Service is as non descript as most places these days - waiter/resses can't be bothered, seem entitled, do the minimum, no repartie. Kindness Cafe across the road I MUCH prefer - they're gorgeous and the food is lovely too, good cause. Sorry Honest John - your food is good but do better with everything else!

Never do this but 45 min wait from ordering only to be told the food orders were messed up. Similar on another table .

Great food and great service as always

Very disappointing had to wait nearly an hour for food, if there was a problem they should have told us, they didn’t I had to ask them, when food finally arrived didn’t offer an apology, food over cooked, very poor communication. 8th May 2024.

There was 6 of us so we had a bit of a wait after we ordered, but it was well worth the wait as the food was superb and generous portions, even the child's size Sunday roast.

Excellent atmosphere and great staff, Sally was really approachable and made sure to attend to all needs!! We were a big rowdy group but the atmosphere was fun and there were smiles all around x All of the staff were great which made our night special!! Great decor - Cocktails were yummy - not too sugary -highly recommend

Delicious food and a relaxed atmosphere.

Visited this lovely place for lunch. The decor was welcoming, the place was clean, the staff were friendly and the food was magnificent! Due to the set up, a main dining area and a side room, you have little buzzers that allow you to call for staff when you are ready to order or want to pay. I had a hummus salad with chips and a mint tea with lemon. My friend had a tuna toastie with a side salad. Will certainly come back and definitely recommend this place.

Had scrambled egg on toast with bacon. And it was perfected eggs were done spot on soft and fluffy. Seems very sad I no but best eggs on toast I have ever had lol 😋

One of my favourite spots in Todmorden. Great food, drinks and vibes always. I've been for breakfast, lunch and dinner and have never been disappointed. The staff are really lovely, it's a dog friendly place and they'll always have a treat (or 5) for our dog!

Interesting building. What was it's purpose in the past? Love the menu...all that Greek theme! Such a shame the Italian ethos has overtaken the Greek...both cultures have have made such strong influences on life

Good place to know about in Tod. Coffee was good and the homemade scone excellent. My only dislike is its rather dark and gloomy. I prefer the Old CoOp over road for its lovely bright dining room on the 1st floor.

Went in for a few drinks, staff were great and drinks were spot on. So we decided to go in the day after for food, the staff were just as nice and food was really good. Will definitely be going back

Service was great but I think the hanging kebab could have had more pieces of chicken on. I have been to other places and the hanging kebab was a lot bigger. I lived in Greece for many yearsand know how to make tzatziki. The tzatziki here seemed to have hardly any garlic in. I asked for a slice of feta cheese separately but they said they couldn't do it. So all in all quite disappointed.Also I love animals and the bar allows dogs but unfortunately one dog was barking a lot after about 20 mins the owners left and it was a lot quieter.

It was okay, but I have to be honest. I've had better meze. A couple of dishes were very good, a couple not very tasty, and not hot. We had to wait quite a long time to be served as well, maybe that's why it wasn't hot. In reply, to below, it was last night at 7.30. Big table of us. It really wasn't bad, just I had to give my honest opinion. We didn't eat much of the gyros it wasn't hot, and not very tasty (my opinion). Overall it was okay, and everyone else who had hanging kebabs thought it was great. I will try again and have the kebab. The place itself is a nice atmosphere 👌

Had a fantastic meal today, excellent staff and atmosphere.

Booked a 1 1/5 hour slot at 5:30 Sun but couldn’t have desserts as the kitchen had closed! Food was just ok to be honest but the meat dishes were somewhat over cooked. Pretty disappointing as it was recommended to us. Not sure we would return.

Great spot, met friends for coffee and a snack. I had the scone which was huge, great value for money. Pleasant and helpful staff. Give it a try you won't be disappointed!

Wheelchair accessible only to the outside area

We found this place purely by accident and glad we did. I thought we should check out the menu before sitting down as I wasn't sure from the outside as to what they were offering. You could even be forgiven in thinking it's another Wetherspoon given the nature of the building. I wonder if a menu by the door would be a good idea to advertise their wide ranging choice of meals including Greek dishes and a full bar. In addition you will be able to see if it's within your price range. What we had was very good and reasonably priced, and the service was quick and pleasant. It's an impressive dining room but feel a little "tidy up" would give it a more upmarket vibe.

Seems closer to a cafe than a bar but the service was very good, and I still got what I wanted so what is there really to complain about? Incidentally, you have to leave the establishment, and walk around the side of the building to get to the beer garden or outdoors area that doesn’t have a door to get into it — kinda awkward but is what it is

Good place to eat ,Greek food which was very good tasty and plenty of it. We ate outside had to order by going inside on arrival .would have been nice if staff came to check on you to see if you need more drinks etc. but service was good otherwise.We had the luck of going on a sunny hot day which is rare ! some of tables one half of tables were in bright hot sun which was uncomfortable to sit and eat in and needed option of shade ie parasol .The other half of tables in shade which was better for us to be honest .But how many of those days do we get . Didn’t eat inside so can’t say how that was

What a hidden gem this is. Our first visit we called in for cake and coffee and was amazed at the selection of drinks , cakes and food on offer in a relaxing old bank building. We’ll be back asap to try a breakfast or other meal and the young people working there were very friendly. Give it a go 👍

We just happened upon the Honest John by accident how glad we did.! We sat outside in the small but lovely beer garden, and enjoyed a lovely meal we both enjoyed a delicious meal of pie + peas .The staff were very attentive and polite.Honest John we will be back. Thank you.

Great food and really friendly staff. The seating area outside is lovely and relaxing and the inside is very modern and clean.

Food was tasteless. Chips tasted like baked in water (how would that be even possible). Burgers were same, no flavour what so ever. Staff clearly didn't feel like working either. @Response: guess you are right, we must be used to better quality food... Apologies for the bad review. We will make sure to choose better establishments next time!

Had a mediocre to poor meal and underwhelming service from tired-looking staff who's response to our feedback about one dish being stale and inedible was total lack of care. Shame as it was my birthday supper and we chose to eat here after a previous positive experience. Won't be rushing back again😐 Thanks for your reply. We too were surprised by the difference in service. We were in yesterday evening around 6. Staff accommodated us though we didn't have a booking which was great but would expect a more conciliatory response to a complaint about a dish which we found to be poor other than 'i haven't had it before' and still charging us though we didn't eat it.

Decent food and friendly staff. The food service was extremely slow but we were warned before we ordered. Prices reasonable.

Super personable and wonderful bunch of people with amazing food. The ultimate Todmorden experience. The food was outstanding. The Cypriot breakfast was done with perfection and so was the flatbread. I'd like to also state that the hazelnut oat milk latte and the caramel cappucino is something that I still think about today and I am going to come back for, even as a flying visit. It's not even one of those artisan pretentious coffees, it's just a really amazingly well made inclusively brewed coffee from 2023. Thank you also for accommodating my dog. While my dog is not a Labrador, he looks like one and seemed to have turned up at the same time as four other black labs. What a meetup ❤️ thank you for everything. Will be back again soon!

Had the feta Greek salad and Anthony had triple cheese and ham toastie. Absolutely gorgeous, good portions, tasty and really friendly staff. Love the idea of the call button when you want to order. Would definitely recommend it, and the amount of cocktails and gins!

My food was delicious, I'd definitely have it again (a pork and chicken toasted Greek flatbread thing, fantastic!). Churros for dessert with chocolate sauce, fabulous!

The food here is so good, we chose a selection of Meze dishes to share and everything was delicious. The whipped feta dip was incredible! We were only passing through but wish we lived closer or we’d be there all the time. Staff and atmosphere lovely too.
