I feel that this lovely pub and restaurant is really good value, how else do you think they can provide such excellent cookery?!?. It is not your common or garden experience. I have really high standards and I think it deserves a Michelin star for its perfect food. The staff can never do enough for you and have gone out of their way to make us happy and comfortable. It cheered us up after a hospital appointment and gave my family a fab experience for my sister’s birthday on two separate occasions. I have been to so many average restaurants but I love this one. Their Sunday roast was pretty average. The 2 slices of sirloin were cooked well, but would appreciate more slices. The trimmings and gravy were very underwhelming. The shell of the roast potatoes were hard rather than crispy. Gravy was watery, thin and bland. Service was quite slow. The place itself smelt of dampness, and the smell of dampness hit as soon as I stepped in, hence it wasn't very pleasing.

Met some friends for Sunday roast. Beautiful location & gorgeous building! Mind your head as full of low beams. We asked to move as the table we were offered had very hard high back chairs- no problem or fuss, we moved to a much comfier spot! Although the arms came off the chairs if you touched them! Took about half an hour for the server to take our order- but then the food arrived fairly quickly after that! I had roast beef (£25) & it was 2 slices of medium rare meat- half of which was fat & gristle. Laid over the top of the roast potatoes- to make it look more I guess? Very small portions of vegetables- which were tasty but could have easily had double (veggies aren’t expensive)! Tiny jug of gravy. The roast was £25! So not great value & the puddings were £10 & £12 each!! Big plates but not big portions- we won’t be back.

A real gem! Superb food, very welcoming and attentive staff, in a beautiful historic building. Lots of parking, easy to find - what more could one want! Very strongly recommended.

I can only endorse all the positive comments. The food is wonderful and somewhat original - the choice is good. The front of house is friendly and the whole experience is top class. It’s not for those looking for a massive menu that can only be achieved by using frozen produce. And how refreshing to be asked what one thinks of the dish and be listened to for an answer. So many restaurants, and not just fast food places ask “Is everything alright?” only to see the waiter turn on his/her heel whilst one is answering. We will definitely return.

Having booked a table for 8 PM, at 8:30 we were told that any order would be behind a table for six and a table for four. In other words some time. They had obviously overbooked. We left, disappointed and hungry.

Went one Friday evening. A great atmosphere and ambience. Food and service were excellent. It seems as if they change the menu quite regularly.

Wow ! Just wow! Probably the most delicious meal I’ve had in years ! Starter was incredible but the beef main course was absolutely outstanding beef like butter and the jus was unctuous ( i think my friend was equally impressed with her meal but I wasn’t taking much notice as I was engrossed in mine) and then there was pudding … quite simply amazing . And to top it all the best damn service and front of house ever ! Apologies for the photos I couldn’t stop myself eating it !

Hadn't eaten here for over a year so thought we would give it a go and sit in the lovely garden on a beautiful sunny evening - we weren't disappointed! The staff were very attentive and the food was suburb - highly recommend

We had a lovely time at HSH tonight! The food was elevated and delicious without being pretentious. Loved the barrel chairs and the decor generally. The garden looked lovely but we preferred the cool of the inside. Service was outstanding, especially considering the pub was busy and there were only two staff alternating between bar and floor. Will return!

We've been here a few times before and it has always been really good. This time the experience was a step change. The food was wonderful and as good if not better than anything available at other gastro pubs in the locality. Everything was characterised by attention to detail. It's a hidden gem and hopefully it be well patronised going forward.

Having had a FAB dinner here before I was super excited to bring family here for a snack after a long midday walk. However despite the entire place being mostly empty when we arrived, we were told rather rudely that they wouldn't be able to serve anything other than peanuts in order to maintain the standards of food they adhere to. Come on.. inside was half empty, outside only had one table full, and we weren't even allowed a bowl of chips?? Really a shame as we'd had such a lovely experience but clearly not a place to go for "a bite".

Lovely charming old English pub. We had Sunday lunch here. The quality of the food is very good and well presented. The lady at front of house organising the operation of the kitchen and dining area is excellent, lovely welcoming smile and manner about her. The staff were all very nice. It is owned by a coupe who work in the business and you can tell the difference from the chain restaurants. Really enjoyed the leg of lamb with all the trimmings. Would definitely go there again and would highly recommend.

My husband and I had Sunday lunch here. Beautiful and charming old English pub, low ceilings inside with a lot of character. The staff are lovely, the lady who welcomed us owns it along with her husband the Chef. We had two roast leg of lamb dinners and accompanied with all the trimmings, along with two glasses of Cab.Sauvignon from South Africa and the food was excellent. My husband had a dessert which was presented beautifully, tasted well but not substantial. The owner is very nice, organising the kitchen and restaurant and has a lovely smile and a lovely manner about her. Would recommend as the food was very good.

HSH run by the amazing Lizzy and Dom is one of our favourite restaurants, period! They are such an awesome dynamic duo! Everything is always so on-point. Right from the wonderful warm welcome through to every delicious course. Even my annoying allergies and intolerances are catered so perfectly. I never feel like I miss out nor do I ever feel like I have to worry as they always remember exactly what I can/cant have (and they can accommodate most things). This is such a huge thing for me as I always feel a bit anxious when I eat out but never ever here. So pleased to see they are no1 on TripAdvisor and that they have expanded with Checkers. Long may their culinary empire continue to grow and prosper, they truly deserve it! :)

This restaurant did not disappoint and the reviews are accurate. We enjoyed a a midweek lunch in this unspoiled old pub/restaurant. No problems at all and food was extremely well presented , delivered promptly and the staff were friendly and welcoming. At the time of our visit we were the only two diners and we sat in i the bar area which was very pleasant on a miserable wet day.

Went for the Sunday roast, we had the beef and the lamb with chocolate blackberry marquise and caramel tart. The atmosphere here is always so lovely and warm, plenty of seating, wheelchair accessible paths, and most importantly (for me), gluten free options. I have celiac disease and aside from the caramel tart and Yorkshire pudding, everything else on the menu was either gluten free or with a gluten free alternative. They even said they've been trying to work on making a gluten free Yorkshire pudding. The hostess brought out my meal for me to ensure everything remained free of gluten, and the food itself was amazing. Excellent food, excellent service, excellent price. Definitely find a way to go.

We have just returned from a mini getaway and had the pleasure of visiting Home Sweet Home on the 15th of February for an evening meal. We were greeted warmly by the team and made our way to our table situated in the bar with a lovely open fire place to keep you toasty. We ordered the Scallops to share to start and these were lovely, cooked to perfection. For the main my wife had the sea bream which she described as the best bream she has had. I had the Pork fillet, braised pig cheek, mash and veg, with a delicious sauce. The meal was exceptional. The tastes and presentation were of a very high standard. We are delighted to have dined here and recommend this place. Well done all at Home Sweet Home.

Whew do I start? Warm and friendly welcome. Decor and lighting to my liking, creating the perfect ambiance. We both had The ox cheek. Melt in the mouth, superbly seasoned. For the first time since I can remember, I did not ask for any seasoning. The servers were tentative but not intrusive. Nothings was too much, even went through every cheese options. Some might say, too pricy. You get what you pay for. I rather pay that little extra for perfection rather than settle for mediocre. Quality, not quantity. I will return. Highly recommend. Your tastebuds will have a gastronomic party.

Simply outstanding. The food is excellent, the atmosphere suits every season, and the mixologist is a master of his craft. A small, but carefully considered menu, ensures each dish is of the highest culinary quality and (most importantly) extremely tasty. On top of this, the service is professional, yet warm and friendly. My wife and I went out for our first evening meal, since the birth of our son, and everyone was so welcoming and accommodating. What is more, the ambience of the restaurant made us feel like we had escaped to a Michelin star restaurant for the night. Home Sweet Home is where the (exceptional) food is found.

We have just returned from the most delicious meal at the Home Sweet Home in Roke, Oxfordshire, and felt that something should be said about the experience. Firstly, the customer service from Lizzy and Neil was second to none. They both made us feel as if nothing was too much trouble and they started by serving us delicious home-made flavoured popcorn and home baked bread and butter. This was just an appetiser whilst we waited for our main meal to be freshly cooked and delivered. The batter on the fish was so light and crisp all the way through with no soggy underside which has been my experience in other establishments. The dessert was different and at first looked too fussy but on tasting it was heaven on a spoon. My compliments to Dom and Dan in the kitchen, you are an excellent team producing good, well-cooked food with an exceptional attention to detail. All in all, the complete experience was one that we both wish to repeat and will have no hesitation in booking again after the Christmas rush is over. Thank you also for not rushing us out of the restaurant after the meal was over. Have a Happy Christmas and New Year see you again in 2024. Katy & Jackie

Great place to eat. The welcome was very warm, and the service was excellent. The food was very good and the price, whilst on the higher side, was worth every penny. Thanks to all involved (so sorry I have no names), including the bar manager, the waitress/bossess and the chef/boss. First time visit and very impressed. Welcoming host and the open log fire was great on a dull, cold day. 3 real ales available, I had the Wadsworth IPA which was in excellent condition. We each had a burger and these were excellent too. Altogether, a great destination pub.

A charming pub, run by a charming couple. The lunchtime menu was about eight options (mains - and about the same for starters: we didn’t even look at the desserts) and it was welcomingly varied - veggie, vegan, and some seriously meaty options for us omnivores. My husband had the pork cheeks, and I had a steak - and, oh my word, the food is seriously restaurant quality, but at at pub prices. There was a nice selection of wines, and the couple next to us had a couple of rather high-end looking cocktails. We’ll definitely go again.

I rarely rave like this but having had dinner at HSH last night I can’t help it. The welcome was beyond friendly, the attention perfectly timed….we felt looked after but not over powered. The food was divine….. definite top marks to the chef. But the over arching wow was the attention to detail of the decor, the food and drinks and the little extras that kept arriving especially the homemade chocolates at the end. We cannot wait to go back and enjoy another HSH experience.

Such a lovely pub with an amazing service and passionate people working there. From fish & chips to the most intricate dish on the menu - it’s consistently so good. Drinks menu changes ever so often as well, and their barman is so knowledgeable, accommodating and attentive. This place really feels like home sweet home, and the fact that I never managed to take any photos here only proves it (because it’s so good to even remember to take the phone out for photos).

We love HSW we always have great food with delightful sevice, however their Sunday lunch would be hard to better anywhere. The meats are well cooked and the selection of vegetables top notch. The roast potatoes are delicious Great little pub

This is our 2nd visit and we were very impressed both times! It's lovely inside and the food is amazing, every dish we have tried we have enjoyed. Both visit's the service has been great, all dishes are explained it good detail and staff are so friendly and polite. Highly recommended. Only thing I would say is a bit more background music would be nice to add to the atmosphere.

Having returned once again, six months later from my previous review I’d like to say this is a wonderful experience second time around. I do however, stick by my original feedback that I could’ve done with an extra slice of beef as top end price at £82 for one course and a bottle of wine is steep. I do think the extra slice of beef and a slightly larger portion of vegetables would be welcome, otherwise fabulous.. five stars!

My wife and I were in the area and popped in for lunch. I used to visit the HSH a number of years ago when I had family nearby, and always liked it as a pub. But it's certainly stepped up a gear since then. Having seen the reviews on TA we knew that the food would be good. But it was more than that. We ordered beef cheeks for our mains and I'd say that what we were served wouldn't have looked out of place in a high end restaurant. The deserts were no less impressive - chocolate marquise and sticky toffee. You won't go wrong with either. What also stood out were the staff. They were so open and friendly. Other than the odd rogue place most front-of-house staff are welcoming, but it was something more genuine at the HSH. If it wasn't genuine then they were damn fine actors. Even our whippet was made to feel like an honoured guest. Any negatives? Only one - we live too far away to go there every week.

Friendly, efficient with great ambiance, food and service combine to make this a perfect example of an excellent country pub. The owners are chef and front of house respectively and truly passionate about what they do - highly impressive. They are investing in the infrastructure of their place and long may they thrive! The homemade spicy popcorn was knock out good as were the scallops, burger and the pork. Close to being Michelin Star worthy…….

Had the most delicious and well presented lunch yesterday and the service was a joy to receive. The scallops and sea bass were perfect and so was the delicious dessert. One of the best girls lunches since we went to the Ritz. The presentation was a joy to look at and the taste was excellent. Thank you to the chef and front of house staff who looked after us so well. We are visiting the area and this place was recommended to us for Sunday lunch, looking at other people's dinners coming out it was decided that we wouldn't be able to have 3 courses so we chose mains abs puddings, good choice, we ordered 3 lamb 1 chicken and 1 beef dinner,they all arrived with a Huge Yorkshire pudding, roast potatoes and loads of meat, the vegetables were served separately which were all absoutly delicious, we then went on to order various puddings from stick toffee pudding, cheese platter, and rhubarb Pana cotta, all which were delicious, there was no way we would have managed all . Courses, The service was absoutly amazing. Very attentive but not over the top, there is nothing we could fault with our visit and are planning another Sunday lunch when we are back in the area in September.

Very disappointed that once again we haven't been able to be accommodated here! The first time it was because of a lack of staff, even though there were four kitchen staff smoking out the back. This afternoon, we got there at 1.35pm and asked if it was OK for food. The barman couldn't decide, and the same lady came over and said they couldn't do food as they were let down by their suppliers. Even though there were a few others eating, I find it very hard to believe that they couldn’t have sorted us out with something. They obviously are not keen on making money. Very disappointed and we certainly won't be going there again! In the end, we went to the King Willy at Ipsden, and although they were very busy, managed to squeeze us in.

Front of house has got to be the best in Oxfordshire! Great main courses but starters a bit bland. Bar area can get smokey with the fire lit. Safe parking and good selection of wines. Garden area for families. We love it.
