The kebab I ordered was so tasty that I came back 2 days later for another! What a surprise to find it was cask ale night with a great deal on my drink. I have visited in the past and it is even better than I remember.

1st ever visit to this pub and have to say very impressed, was quite busy but service was excellent, ordered food and drinks at the bar with table number and they insisted on bringing drinks to the table so didn't have to do anything, food was good and once we had finished our starter was asked was it ok to start cooking our main meal. Very nice indeed

Where do I start I have eaten in here many times every time I come to York this is the place, firstly the staff very efficient very pleasant nothing is to much trouble, the food plenty of choice the yorkshire pudding is very filling, the rest of the menu is reasonably priced and plenty to pick from would highly recommend the fish and chips 😘 they also have a kids menu and finely the drink a wide choice of beers ciders and spirits I'm a gin drinker so there was a lovely selection I can't thank the staff for their quick service and pleasant manner we will be back thank you ❤️

We chose this pub for Sunday lunch after reading other reviews. We were not disappointed. I had the turkey dinner which came with a little jug of extra gravy and a Yorkshire pudding that needed to be seen to be believed (it was huge). The Yorkshire was light and fluffy. The dinner was delicious. My child opted for Fish and Chip from the children's menu which also looked lovely. I wish we lived nearer so we could eat hear more often!

Dropped in for lunch and was very pleasantly surprised. Warm friendly welcome from very efficient staff. Food really good, plenty of choice and great value for money. Nice atmosphere, but some of the decor a little tired, but otherwise a great experience. Will definitely visit again.

A very traditional British pub with an amazing Beer, cocktail section and Food. They serve the most traditional and massive Yorkshire Pudding. This was my first time and I'm sure I have eaten it at the right place. Ordered the pudding with trio Cumberland Sausages served with mash, vegetables and gravy. It was massive. Also tried their chips and garlic bread. They had some offers on 2 for 1 cocktails. Tried the Godfather (JD + Pepsi) and Sex on the beach (vodka+some fruit juice). Was made to perfection. The ambience is amazing and so are the servers.

A proper pub !! Really decent Sunday roast but the Tetleys cask ... WOW what a really well kept pint! After 3 visits the wife told me we had to try somewhere else !!!

I really love how their interior vibes, oldies with homey feeling yet beautiful and gorgeous. They let you choose your own table and you can come to the cashier to order. We ordered the Yorkshire Pudding and Fish & Chips. Both are delicious and both are big in portion. Yorkshire Pudding is not a dessert, it's meat with mashed potato and vegetables in a bowl like bread, poured with some brown sauce. It's good. Fish & Chips is really nice. Fish is big, crispy, and really nice. The chips are thick and well seasoned. Really delicious.

We visited several times during our stay in York. We were staying just outside the walls but it was in easy walking distance. It is very good value and the menu is varied with generous portions. We enjoyed every meal we had there. There is a weekly programme of "events" that are worth noting. It can get very busy at times so it can be worth going in a bit early - they don't rush you so you can have a drink while waiting to place your order. There is an interesting historical background to the pub.

Found this lovely pub on our walk into York and we were glad we did! The food was lovely, reasonably priced and service was great. Will definitely returning

The Hole in the Wall is a great spot to find good British pub fare. My family ate here twice while visiting York and we had a great experience both times. Service was friendly and quick and the atmosphere was warm and charming. The location is easy to find, and easily walkable from local B&Bs. I had the cheddar, leek, and potato pie with gravy (vegetarian option) that came with fries and garden peas. The peas were fresh and tasty and the food was warm and filling. I would eat this meal once a week if I could; the flavors were wonderful. We also had dessert of apple crumble. It could have used a few more apple pieces, but it tasted wonderful and the custard on the side was a treat - something I'd never had before! A must stop if you're visiting York!

Popped into this pub after many hours walking in York. Decided to have the Sunday roast beef and so glad we did. Without a doubt the best roast beef and Yorkshire pudding I think I’ve ever had. Absolutely delicious! Washed down with fabulous real ales. Great service and atmosphere also.

I Visited Last Month on a recent visit to York after exploring the City. The Bar Staff and Wait Staff were outstanding offering Suggestions on Local Beers to try while here in York. For those from the States, The Hole in The Wall offers a 2 tiered system. Upon Entering you can go up to the Bar and place your Drinks order and upon Going around the Bar, there is an Ordering Station for food and Drinks , which ensures a smooth process. I throughly enjoyed the Fish And Chips and the Pedigree Ale. Overall a great Pub, Close by to the Cathedral with Excellent Service and Friendly Staff.

Having wandered around the wonderful city of York it was time to find our way back to the carpark but this wonderful pub beckoned us in as we walked past. I couldn’t say no. It was reasonably quiet inside and a table was found and, naturally, a pint of ale. Oddly, from Ringwood, New Forest. A very interesting pub with quite a history as shown throughout by photographs and memorabilia on the walls. Really friendly staff with rapid service. Food looked very good but, unfortunately, we had already eaten. OK, next time. As I said earlier the pub was quiet but, after a pint or two, it filled up with hoards of visitors. Glad we came in earlier. If you are in York, check it out. Well worth a visit.

So we had to go bc our local sports bar right near our house is also called Home in the Wall. Service and atmosphere were excellent. Part of it may have been our fault for not getting traditional English food. Nachos were not good. The wife did not like her kabob. I tried it and it was ok. The bbq chicken bacon and cheese was also just ok. Pretty bland. That being said the drinks were good and again the staff was excellent.

Great food, service good, staff very pleasant.. Will be back to enjoy all three aspects again.

We arrive at this pub, no one welcomes us. We sit down, the waiters pass in front of us several times without taking any orders. After 10 minutes of waiting with nothing, we had to leave. I don't recommend.

Well this was a rare find… last year when we first went to York. So upon our return trip this year during the Easter Monday week we decided to try here again for our evening meals. Absolutely fantastic place! Now it can be busy on a Wednesday after 5pm (due to the free bottle of wine with purchase of two steak meals) but was well worth it for the meals alone. When ordering they ask you for any allergies. There is a QR Code you can scan and search their website and whatever your allergy, once selected it removes all meals from the menu that have that allergy. Most efficient. But the added benefit is the staff have no issues with asking the chef if you wish. Three nights running we came here and was never let down with the quality and quantity. Actually on the Wednesday we got there at 4:45pm and upon giving our order the guy told me to wait until 5pm for the wine bottle offer. He could easily have taken our order and not bothered but the service was excellent. Highly recommend the steak, gammon and lasagne. Overall one of the best places to eat in York that is very reasonable on price without scrimping on quality and quantity.

Meal was lovely I left my glasses and didn’t realize until I was on the train back home I rang them and they were on the floor in the pub the staff were so helpful they sent them back to me and I’ve just received them 2 days later Will be back next time I go to York Thankyou so much Would definately recommend

A bit like Wetherspoons but not as good. Prepaid meals before you eat and average at best. Both myself and my wife were up all night with upset stomachs. Only wish we’d walked a bit further and eaten elsewhere

Spontaneous visit on our first visit to York and what a find . The food was great .My partner finished her plate which rarely happens . They do all your favourite pub meals and goid old fashioned dessrts .I loved the jam sponge and custard. The prices are spot on and nice clean and pleasant environment . The service is spot on ..even table service with your drinks .

Fantastic service, lovely staff, good ambience Only bugbear they have stopped doing the pulled pork baguette which was my All time favourite. Husband had the steak pie very nice but gravy needed to be less watery . I had steak baguette steak nice and tender but not a patch on the pulled pork

We dined at The Hole in the Wall 19/03/24, where Daniel's friendly service brought my wife and I a succulent gammon steak each and our friend a sumptuous steak and ale pie. We would reccomend this warm and welcomming pub to anyone visiting York. Good service, good food at a fair price and good beer. Excellent.

Looks really welcoming and is but the food is mediocre at best none of it is home made and the beer battered onion rings sound lovely but there cheap nasty frozen garbage 3 for £1.50 which made them sound home made ,chips were ok out of a bag and the steak pie was ok but not great, the wife had a blt sandwich which was ok she said ,overall was disappointing but staff were nice

Cosy little pub i dont use enough as its probably more a tourist haunt. Food as a reasonable price and although not exceptional was pretty good. An good selestion of beers with not just poncy pale ales but more traditional beers too. My only complaint would be 2 double gin n lemonades later in the night were £22 , way over priced without warning.

A good little pub for food and drink

Really lovely little pub, we met some lovely people on our visit.

Went in for some drinks with my friend and partner. Had a nice time and the staff were really friendly and approachable. The prices are fair and the atmosphere is 10/10 feels really homely and when the fire is going it’s so warm and cozy. Absolutely love the live music that was on, the person who was singing was so nice and chill to listen to and it matched the vibe of the place really well. I will always recommend this pub to anyone looking for a chill spot to get food or a drink when they’re in york. Really enjoyed my visit.

Standard Marston's pub with standard Marston's mediocre food. Gains an extra star because the staff were nice and I like the interior.

It was raining, we had 3 hungry & grumpy children. I'd been here about 10 years prior so, being close by, headed in. Lovely old pub, I asked the barman if there was space for 5 of us and we were warmly welcomed and were seated without fuss. Plenty of choice for adults and children alike. We all enjoyed a lovely hour here. Food was faultless and service was quick. We all left very satisfied and would highly recommend - burgers were especially good. We'll be back next time.

Lovely cosy pub cask ales only£2,90.on a Monday great deal...the food was excellent I had gammon served and cooked perfectly. Wife had vegetarian chilli and she said it was the best chilli she has ever had..would definitely recommend this pub

Beautiful atmosphere. Went in after the sculpture trail for a couple of drinks and had one of the best sticky toffee puddings in York. Would definitely be visiting again. We were served by Sunni and Dave who were both very accommodating and friendly.

Came here one night when travelling around the UK and the food and service was amazing, since moving to York it quickly became my regular pub and has never been a let down in terms of anything. The staff are always lovely and helpful.

Never been here before. It's a little gem - warm, welcoming and friendly with an open real fire. Standard pub fare, but so well executed and great portions. No filled Yorkshire Puddings on our visit (a sell-out), but plenty of choice. We had Hunter's Chicken and a Classic Chicken Burger. We will definitely be eating here again.

We moved to York almost a year ago and this pub is our favourite, the staff are always so welcoming and lovely, the beer is always good and the atmosphere is exactly what you want no matter your mood. (The food is always great too - the giant yorkie puds are a must have)

A returned visit to The Hole in the Wall, the Yorkshire pudding was delicious & the service was great.

Ordered our drinks and decided to have a Sunday Roast. Wish I'd never bothered it was horrible. No taste to the dinner. Meat couldn't cut it it was that tough (offered it my husband he'll eat anything but he refused it) , roast potatos hard mash must have put that on with a teaspoon gravy like water. Sorry for £13-95 yav got to up your game I'm afraid. Won't be coming back again. Never asked if everything was OK by the staff. Not a happy bunny

We had a cauliflower and pepper curry that was very nice and the price was £11.95. Battered cod and chips the fish was lovely and it was a large fish price £13.85. Minted lamb shank with mash and vegetables price £17.95 which again was very nice. Also a grilled hake with mash and vegetables with a sauce which was lovely and hot £14.50. The staff was nice and friendly the pub was clean. I did not think the price was to dear. And would recommend this place for a meal

Regular visitor as I like the format of their quiz nights. The atmosphere on a Christmas cold winters night is excellent, with the roaring fire that's so realistic (as a gas fire) that I've even seen people throw things on it. The food is consistently good and well priced as are the drinks and there's usually some good guest beers (real ale) on. The wines are also well priced and good quality. Just wish that people wouldn't cheat at the quiz, I like to lose fair and square! A mobile phone out should be an automatic disqualification.
