The Hole In The Wall in York

Feeling peckish just before midday we wondered in on spec. There's plenty to choose from on the menu though mostly fairly traditional pub-type fare. Portions are generous without being massive (this is a good thing; they fill you without leaving you stuffed!) and the food is excellent. By 12:30 or thereabouts it was really pretty busy - so either reserve a table or get there early! We were there on 31 December so in high season probably more so. Service is good and staff really friendly. Many thanks for an excellent meal!

Might not look great from the outside but very good meals served here. The staff were friendly and efficient, and the menu quite extensive. Good choice of vegetarian dishes and some gluten free options. The food was nicely presented and very good; and at a very reasonable price. We’ll definitely be visiting again when in York.

We came to York 10 years ago for our 1st anniversary and this was our cosy pub so 10 years after we came back and is the 3rd visit in 3 days! Environment, food and service amazing as we remember. Thank you

We passed this pub while exploring York an decided to go back in the evening for dinner. We walked in and luckily found a table near the fire. We ordered two fish and chips we waited about 15 mins as they were really busy but it was a nice atmosphere so we did not mind waiting. Our fish and chips arrived we looked at each other we had never seen such big fish it was really fresh and and tasted really good.

Fantastic atmosphere the staff are amazing really friendly and the food is amazing just what you need we loved it so if your in York stop off at the hole in the wall

Lovely cosy pub with great staff.

We had a meal at the Hole in the Wall on Wednesday and it was really lovely - the pub was warm, inviting and busy. We located a table and were able to order quickly. we took advantage of the Wednesday offer and ordered 2 meals from the grill menu and received a bottle of wine - the steaks were lovely and cooked just right and the wine was nice. All in all I don't know how it evening could have been improved - the food was really nice, the staff were really helpful and the fool arrived quickly - Well done to all concerned

York have hundreds of Pubs but "Hole In The Wall" has the most unique name among all of them. But its not only its name what is appealing to locals and visitors. Very well located, close to York Minister and York and Bootham Bar, it offers and extensive menu including British classics like fish & chips, pies and burgers. They also have an interesting variety of of Cask Ales, certain days at a very attractive price. The traditional decoration including a fireplace along with a very friendly staff ensures this welcoming place will be ideal for a casual gathering with your friends. I totally recommend it.

Called in for christmas lunch. The food was excellent and very generous portions were served. There was a warm atmosphere from both the staff and the fire blazing away!! Would highly recommend a visit and will be calling back again soon. Thank you to all the staff for making our visit a pleasant one.

I can not believe that they charged me £5.60 for a single shot of rhubarb Gin . I travel all around the uk this is the most expensive and ridiculous cost for a single shot of Gin . No wonder they Bar service was quick .

Visited today ordered 2 turkey dinners and 2 mulled wines . £13.99 for two the dinners Yet charged 43.99 very expensive but we was cold and very hungry as had been traveling all day and had my baby boy with me who needed feeding The meals wasn't worth 13.99 roasts was hard and dry . Mash tastes powdery . Meat was very tough to cut with the knifes provided broccoli tasted like it hadn't been cooked for very long The mulled wine was very small like half a glass The staff who served us was asked numerous of times not to place the drinks next to my baby in high chair as they was hot but did also placed the box of cutlery next to him (comman sense not to put knifes next to a baby) Was disappointed won't be going again

We visited The hole in the wall when we visited in February which was a lovely and the food was delicious so when we decided to go back to York for a recent visit and couldn't pass up the opportunity to go back there. The first night we went and had another delicious meal however after I ordered I saw the Christmas Menu so we decided to come back the next night. OUTSTANDING is a word that I would use. It was cooked to perfection and the service was excellent. The manager went above and beyond to make sure that we had a perfect evening. Definitely would recommend this establishment for anyone visiting York. Thanks again

Excellent staff 👏 very alert and attentive. Old and traditional atmosphere. Food is typical pub fare, but well prepared and served, they do a very nice yorkshire pudding filled with a selection of meats. Good range of beers🍺.

Came in for a couple of drinks on Remembrance Sunday. Alfie and Fateu were so lovely. Friendly, great atmosphere and lovely pub. We didn’t have food on this occasion but would definitely come back.

What a fantastic place, we had dinner tonight while on holiday. Food is excellent, tasty and well priced. Our server was Fatou..she was pleasant and chatty. Atmosphere great ...just what you would expect from an old York pub. This is a gem of a place to visit.

I chose this pub because it had a good rating and I was wrong. I did enjoyed a wonderful meal here (I tried the Sunday roast for the first time). However, the woman at the counter who took my order wasn’t very friendly—her tone was a bit abrupt. I understand that everyone is busy, and I was simply there to enjoy my meal and pay for what I ordered. Unfortunately, her attitude made me feel uncomfortable about ordering anything further (how would you feel if you were in my position?). I tried to order an extra and she gave me the same tone again, and asked it’s that everything? Like I can’t make any order anymore. Later, while I was still eating and checking my phone, she came over and asked, “Are you finished?” which I found a bit rude, as it was clear I hadn’t finished my meal. With this experience, I’ll have to think twice about coming back. I hope this feedback is taken on board, and that the service can be improved. Cheers! On a positive note, the man was really friendly to me. He deserves a bonus or raise.

Absolutely the best roast we have ever had, very friendly atmosphere coay and warm,staff very polite and friendly with great knowledge of the area, we come from Nottingham and have decided to go back for a day and of course a Sunday roast, excellent.

We were on a one day trip in York and while shopping at aimaginary, one of staff suggeated Hole in the Wall for a nice dinner.. It was a good choice. It was a good abirnce, howevrr a bit conjusted.. Cant complain, as its Hole in thewall... Small chairs and small tables.. Not too many options on drinks, however cheap . We got tomatoe soup and Beef lasagne, the quantities of thr soup was ok, but the lasagne wasnt much filling.. NHS Blue light discounts were incredible.

We were visiting York for Halloween and it was the amazing decorations that initially drew us into the pub, the inside itself was lovely and cosy also. We had come in for a quick bite to eat but i wish we had planned a longer visit to the pub as the food was to die for, it was absolutely gorgeous and we will definitely be coming back for a burger next time. The bartenders on shift where lovely, answered my questions and were very helpful, I will be visiting again tonight for the quiz and to try the special Halloween drink which the bartenders sold me on.

Even though really busy, food and service was excellent. Spoilt for choice as menu very varied. Took no time to get a table as quick turn around. Food didn't take long to arrive. Had the beef Sunday roast. Couldn't fault it. Vegetables were perfect as were the beef and Yorkshire Pudding.

We are from skipton, so we unfortunately don't get to visit too often, however when we do, the service and atmosphere is always the friendliest... lovely down to earth staff and customers 😀

Came across this place as it was around the corner from where we were staying. Gem of a place. Food was excellent as was the decor. Nice cosy place which you can certainly relax in. If I stayed near there, it would certainly be my regular.

This was a lucky find for our evening meals. We had booked a hotel serving breakfast only so we needed to eat out in the evening. We spotted this pub serving meals and thought to give it a try. Not disappointed it was excellent food at a great price. We ate there every evening as the menu was extensive. The landlord and staff friendly and helpful and the place had a welcoming feel. Would highly recommend.

Good pub food at reasonable cost

Visited at 3pm on a Wednesday, so very quiet! Staff were very helpful and welcoming, and the food was excellent. (I personally had the large roast beef Yorkshire pudding)

Great atmosphere , open fire welcomes you in as you enter.. staff are very friendly and welcoming , good choice of ales and lagers with a well stocked spirts shelf . The menu is extensive and will cater for all dietary needs. My only disappointment was that the piece of beef that came with the mix grill was nothing but gristle .

We stayed in York for four nights. We stayed at the Minster Hotel and ate and drank here every night as it was very convenient for us. Good Yorkshire Pudding.

What a beautiful traditional pub, rich with local history! Come sit by the window of an old prison and listen to the ghastly sound of mysterious footsteps, while enjoying one of the enormous and delicious traditional Yorkshire puddings! Lots of options for vegetarians, vegans and food allergies and intolerances too. The orders must be placed directly by the counter but the plates and drinks are brought to your table.

My dad and I were looking for a place to eat toad in the hole, which was incredibly elusive, but the dinner special on the wall showcased a Yorkshire pudding with three sausages inside, which is close enough to the real deal! It was delicious, the staff were friendly and quick to get our orders ready! Overall, a lovely time was had! Thank you for your hard work and kindness!

The veggy burger with bbq "cauliflower wings" was tasty but the fries a bit limp (would have preferred chips which were excellent). Very busy, it felt a bit crowded.

We went here two nights running while staying in York at end of a weeks visit to NE from Midlands, we just wanted a light evening meal Sunday and Monday. We were greated at the bar abd shown a choice of tables we did our usual trick of creating a sharing platter from a few different starters as full main meals are often too Much and we get to enjoy different tastes, we had heard a just single song from a different part of the bar then it stopped but around 9 the background music went off and a young female guitarist and singer took over, we switched table to get a better view and we're treated to some lovely live music some we knew but most were her own, she was still singing when we left.. The Monday night we looked for other places to eat bit ended up Back at the Hole, sadly no.music this night but excellent food and friendly helpful staff and being quieter much faster service Fully recommended, try to catch live music of thats your bag I think its Sunday and wednsdays nights.

Brilliant food, service and atmosphere. If you want proper English pub grub, this is the place for you. They do giant Yorkshire puddings, but get there early for these as they go fast. Fancy a steak - perfectly cooked. Other half had surf and turf with a rare steak. Was cooked perfectly. I had scampi and chips, again absolutely delicious. Hand pulled beer served perfectly as always. Best pub in York for food and real ale!
