The Hole In The Wall in York

The Hole in the Wall is a nice cosy traditional pub with a real fire and a contemporary feel. There is a good selection of draught beers, including four hand-pulled cask conditioned real ales. The ones i tried were in excellent condition. I haven't tried the food, but the menu looked very tempting.

Had the mixed grill. All very nice, though chicken didn't have a lot of flavour and steak was a little overcooked for 'medium'. Chips great (really crispy), mushrooms great, peas great.

TOP NOTCH!!! Called in for food (Sunday 16th March at approximately 7pm) and the whole experience from start to finish was amazing, the ambience, the atmosphere, the staff and the food were First class. The two guys working the bar and the floor were brilliant, nothing was too much trouble, and they were super efficient and friendly. The food was way above average bar food at a reasonable price, the Sirloin was to die for! Can't find fault with the place and we will FOR SURE be back... keep doing what you're doing guys!!

First Pub on our tour of York.Mondays real ale £2.90 a pint.Bargain.We both had gammon egg n chips .And food was freshly made and presented well.excellent bar service.Would deffo come back.

Was a busy Saturday evening but managed to get a table easy enough. Friendly bar staff. Plentiful menu to suit all. Food came quickly and very tasty burger 😋. Will definitely visit again.

The most fantastic Sunday lunch (turkey). Perfect portions and reasonably priced.. A traditional pub with a cozy and welcoming atmosphere and great service. Will definitely revisit when I am back in York.

Food was great very busy but efficient service

We have been here on our last few visits to York for food and it's never let us down. Food has always been fresh,hot and very enjoyable. The staff are always very happy and very helpful.

Service is really good as is the atmosphere. There's always an eclectic mix of people, young, old etc. Food is good but you're not under pressure to eat if you don't want to. Good range of beers including a draught alcohol free.

Yorkshire pudding with home roast beef is so amazing! Beautiful Live music in Tuesday from 9pm. Just come to enjoy great meal and beer. Also very friendly staff.I did enjoy this lovely night in York. Yorkshire pudding is not a dessert! It is Yorkshire pudding stuffed with meat and vegetables, super sweet gravy, I remember there is no menu, it is on the blackboard to the left of the entrance😊

Food was ok. I had a veggie burger and was expecting something like a Moving Mountain burger, but it was a mushy vegetable thing that fell apart when I tried to eat it

Stopped in a few times while in York. Food sort of ok, drinks great, nice pub. Would stop in again for drinks.

Came in at 11.31 brilliant pint of guiness great staff and the food looks superb would definitely recommend to all will definitely be coming back

Really nice atmosphere. Service was friendly and efficient. The pub was busy, but we found space and stayed longer than planned! Would recommend and would certainly revisit next time I'm in the city.

I've been to lots of pubs for meals over the years but the food here was just beautiful. It was only gammon and chips with a fried egg but it truly was perfect. A beautiful pub warm friendly and excellent service. I will definitely recommend and I most certainly will be back .

I was here on Thursday 16th. I was served by Fatou. She was great, made me laugh whilst being very professional. A sweet lass.

Didn't eat here as had booked elsewhere but what I saw of the Sunday lunch I will definitely be coming back. Enormous Yorkshire puddings and generous portions.

Typical British pub (in a foreigner’s eye). Nice and warm food, fire place and warm welcoming ambiance. We loved to stop here for a dinner and a beer after a visit of York in a cold weather.

Great pub with a cosy country vibe. No better place to be on a cold day than next to a real fire eating comfort food. We had soup for starter & beef in a big yorkshire pudding & vegetables for main, both absolutely delicious 😋 staff were friendly too. We loved this place & will definitely be back ❤️

Feeling peckish just before midday we wondered in on spec. There's plenty to choose from on the menu though mostly fairly traditional pub-type fare. Portions are generous without being massive (this is a good thing; they fill you without leaving you stuffed!) and the food is excellent. By 12:30 or thereabouts it was really pretty busy - so either reserve a table or get there early! We were there on 31 December so in high season probably more so. Service is good and staff really friendly. Many thanks for an excellent meal!

We ordered 2 beef Sunday roast, 1pint beer and rum & coke! when we didn't get our drinks after a while, we asked when is coming and the answer “we will bring it to your table! “ , after we received the food first and we told to the waitress if she can check our drink because it’s take time! The food was very disappointing first the Yorkshire pudding , looked like a burn flipflop! Tasteless boiled vegetables and mush potato!? Maybe the chef had a bad day!

Just 2 people serving on a busy boxing day lunchtime and the service was perfect, as was the food. Really can't fault anything.

Might not look great from the outside but very good meals served here. The staff were friendly and efficient, and the menu quite extensive. Good choice of vegetarian dishes and some gluten free options. The food was nicely presented and very good; and at a very reasonable price. We’ll definitely be visiting again when in York.

Visited at a very busy time. Place would probably benefit from having someone at the door directing customers to tables and showing where to order. It seems that you just pick your own table - and orders aren't taken at the table (as you may expect). This information isn't necessarily clear upon arrival. Very long wait for the mains. A larger table who ordered mains after us was served their mains long before us. Beef seemed tough and chewy. Roasties not very crispy. Rest of it was OK. Fries seemed from frozen. Veggie burger was really good. Atmosphere good. Overall OK, but probably wouldn't visit again.

We passed this pub while exploring York an decided to go back in the evening for dinner. We walked in and luckily found a table near the fire. We ordered two fish and chips we waited about 15 mins as they were really busy but it was a nice atmosphere so we did not mind waiting. Our fish and chips arrived we looked at each other we had never seen such big fish it was really fresh and and tasted really good.

We had a meal at the Hole in the Wall on Wednesday and it was really lovely - the pub was warm, inviting and busy. We located a table and were able to order quickly. we took advantage of the Wednesday offer and ordered 2 meals from the grill menu and received a bottle of wine - the steaks were lovely and cooked just right and the wine was nice. All in all I don't know how it evening could have been improved - the food was really nice, the staff were really helpful and the fool arrived quickly - Well done to all concerned

York have hundreds of Pubs but "Hole In The Wall" has the most unique name among all of them. But its not only its name what is appealing to locals and visitors. Very well located, close to York Minister and York and Bootham Bar, it offers and extensive menu including British classics like fish & chips, pies and burgers. They also have an interesting variety of of Cask Ales, certain days at a very attractive price. The traditional decoration including a fireplace along with a very friendly staff ensures this welcoming place will be ideal for a casual gathering with your friends. I totally recommend it.

Called in for christmas lunch. The food was excellent and very generous portions were served. There was a warm atmosphere from both the staff and the fire blazing away!! Would highly recommend a visit and will be calling back again soon. Thank you to all the staff for making our visit a pleasant one.

I can not believe that they charged me £5.60 for a single shot of rhubarb Gin . I travel all around the uk this is the most expensive and ridiculous cost for a single shot of Gin . No wonder they Bar service was quick .

Enjoyable evening good food a d great atmosphere

Visited today ordered 2 turkey dinners and 2 mulled wines . £13.99 for two the dinners Yet charged 43.99 very expensive but we was cold and very hungry as had been traveling all day and had my baby boy with me who needed feeding The meals wasn't worth 13.99 roasts was hard and dry . Mash tastes powdery . Meat was very tough to cut with the knifes provided broccoli tasted like it hadn't been cooked for very long The mulled wine was very small like half a glass The staff who served us was asked numerous of times not to place the drinks next to my baby in high chair as they was hot but did also placed the box of cutlery next to him (comman sense not to put knifes next to a baby) Was disappointed won't be going again

We visited The hole in the wall when we visited in February which was a lovely and the food was delicious so when we decided to go back to York for a recent visit and couldn't pass up the opportunity to go back there. The first night we went and had another delicious meal however after I ordered I saw the Christmas Menu so we decided to come back the next night. OUTSTANDING is a word that I would use. It was cooked to perfection and the service was excellent. The manager went above and beyond to make sure that we had a perfect evening. Definitely would recommend this establishment for anyone visiting York. Thanks again

Excellent staff 👏 very alert and attentive. Old and traditional atmosphere. Food is typical pub fare, but well prepared and served, they do a very nice yorkshire pudding filled with a selection of meats. Good range of beers🍺.

Came in for a couple of drinks on Remembrance Sunday. Alfie and Fateu were so lovely. Friendly, great atmosphere and lovely pub. We didn’t have food on this occasion but would definitely come back.
