Very nice haddock, chips and fish shop curry. The only negative (no fault of the shop) was the exorbitant price for the public car park. Just under £5 for up to 1 hour and I was there for less than 10 mins. This must affect local trade in the area.

Very friendly staff, great fish and chips. We both had haddock and chips. The tartare sauce was good. We sat in and ate, a great experience all around! We will come back!

Really disappointed. I usually love fish and chips from here but on this occasion the chips had been reheated and was too hard(like bricks). Really upsetting as I’ve been at work all day and not eaten.

Honestly terrible went for a chip butty, and kids meal sat waiting staff are rude, and then the lady was looking through the bread buns for the chip butty and realised they had gone moldy and started throwing them out in front of us then didn't bother to get fresh ones just used one of the ones inside the basket.

Great fish and chips and very welcoming staff - they love dogs 😊👍. The peas tasted a bit sweet but maybe that is what other people prefer.. Will certainly return!

got the haddock and chips. no seriously you open a fish and chips restaurant and NOT THE FISH NOR THE CHIPS ARE EDIBLE. PICK A LANE SOMETHING ATLEAST NEEDS TO WORK OUT FOR YOU. its either you drown the chips in oil, or you drown the fish in oil BOTH DONT WORK. how does one even manage to mess up chips? u deserve a prize for that. i dont want anyone for a second to think this is about the money spent, or the time wasted at the restaurant. the restaurant was truly lovely and the service was great. this review is fueled purely off of how HORRIBLE THE FOOD WAS nothing else is a factor. im genuinely beguiled by how BAD and OILY and genuinely DISAPPOINTING that food was.

After reading mixed reviews was a little wary of what we would get BUT fish was lovely and lightly battered, chips were fresh and hot. Service was friendly and welcoming. Will definitely go back if we visit York again

Excellent food although could have been hotter

Lovely place on the corner and lovely fish but the chips were stone cold curry sauce way too lumpy no cutlery or napkins, service was terrible we were told they don't serve drinks but saw people walking out with drinks they missed a curry sauce off our order but I'm quite glad they did, also it's very expensive for what you get I wouldn't recommend you come here

Went in for a large chips and was so surprised at how awful it was - portion was just enough for one, chips were crunchy, cold and really dried out. No idea how long they’d been there. Was craving soft, freshly fried chips and was so disappointed. Was given the box open, not asked if I wanted salt or vinegar either. Really basic order and so wrong!

We had haddock and chips, mushy peas, curry sauce, tartar sauce. It was so nice that we came back 2 days later and ordered the same. The fish is only lightly battered which tasted terrific and all the sides were delicious! Kelly is a brill cook and the lady who served us was so friendly and helpful - it was the afternoon of Saturday the 25th of January so that should pinpoint who was shifted then. Well done ladies and thank you, we will be back :-)

Working in York this week and stumbled upon this gem. Absolutely delicious. I had scampi with home made tartar sauce. Can’t wait to go back when in York again in February. Thank you.

I've returned to this chippy since my last review and the quality was much better overall. Really tasty and quick service. I had the Sausage Chips and Curry Sauce, and I walked home with it which is about a 15 minute walk. When I got home, the food was still hot, which is a credit to how freshly cooked everything was. Will definitely return!

Nice fish, which was flaky and bright white, not the biggest of pieces but big enough. Chips tasty

Called for fish, chips and peas takeaway around 5.30pm. Very disappointed with the whole meal. Fish was grey looking with soggy batter, the majority of the chips were rock hard, scrag ends and the peas were watery. We have used this establishment before when visiting York, but this visit fell far short of previous experiences.

Served us tasty fish suppers. The cafe section is quite hidden behind the take-away shop, down a side street (Ebor Street). We assumed the menu would be much the same and went in intent upon cod & chips. We nearly turned about when we saw the menu was full of sharing plates and burgers, but on asking we found we could actually get fish & chips, so we did, and very nice it was, and keenly priced at £10 each for substantial dinners.

Most Excellent: Very friendly staff. Perfectly cooked, firm and flaky haddock, non-greasy chips and scraps. Good portion size, prepared to telephone order within the time it took me to cross the road to collected them.

Always visit here whilst staying at the caravan club site and not usually disappointed, however, this time we were. Portion size was more like a kids meal and the Irish curry was weak and watery. Has put us off visiting again.

I do not understand some of the reviews on here. We are visiting in our motorhome and are very fussy. We went here wondering what to expect after reading a few reviews. All I can say is I must be at the wrong chippy because what we had were 2 haddock and chips with gravy and 👌 wow.... I never really enjoy fish and chips but on this occasion I ate all of it and my partner was also well impressed. My advice. Try for yourself. Lovely food

Very disappointing not fresh fish.Returned last week the chips undercooked the fish batter full of grease the peas was ok but ,it’s the most expensive chippy in York and one of the worst,staff don’t know what they are doing ,it’s the last time I go there total let down and a rip off.

Comimos en el café y el pescado con patatas fritas era absolutamente magnífico... ¡El mejor que hemos tenido! Encantadora presentación con ensalada también. Servicio fresco caliente y abundante y encantador del personal amable. Rebozado crujiente y pescado blanco encantador. Café limpio y precio razonable para comer con buenos tamaños de porción.

Esta es la última noche de nuestras vacaciones en caravana y tuvimos una comida encantadora en la esposa de los pescadores. Comimos en la zona de la cafetería, que era encantador y limpio. Nuestras comidas llegaron rápidamente y los dos disfrutamos de nuestro pescado con patatas fritas con ensalada. Mi marido también tenía guisantes tiernos y pan y mantequilla. Este es el mejor pescado con papas fritas que he probado, y recomendaría a cualquiera que visite aquí. El personal es amable y servicial. Sin duda volveremos si venimos a York de nuevo.

Since it changed hands years ago, I’ve not used this fish and chips shop, BUT IVE looked in a good few times and not liked the look of food. (I think in my head I’m a F&C Connoisseur) Well today was the day , I didn’t go inside as I was driving . if I had, I’d have walked away ,if I’d seen the product . Anemic !!! Best distsciption . Fish ok ish. Batter Anemic -1. Chips below average Anemic and soggy.Mushy peas 5💥👍 Hundred percent I’m sure there’s a market for this product but actually it was everything that I feared ever since it was taken over and I’ve been playing Mr. nosy.

I actually stayed in York for a few weeks . And the fisherman's wife just was my place to go .. great staff absolutely amazing food .. and this Irish curry source they do . Omg no words I would actually go just for the source to drink . I can not big this fish and chip shop up anymore . 20/10 any day ..

Nothing bad to say about this place, it seems some people just like to moan. I have used many places and this place is the best place locally for customer service, the staff are lovely and down to earth and the food is spot on 👌❤️

Pedí 3 eglefinos con papas fritas, guisantes tiernos. Costó alrededor de 15 libras por cabeza. El eglefino estaba bien (aunque la 'pasta' era más como pan rallado) pero las patatas fritas. . urrg. Asqueroso sería decirlo suavemente. Eran una extraña mezcla de papas fritas masticables que obviamente habían sido cocinadas días antes y recalentadas, mezcladas con papas fritas más frescas que claramente solo estaban parcialmente cocinadas - goma de hecho. Al estar hambrientos de hambre nos comimos el pescado y yo fui lo suficientemente tonto como para comer algunas de las patatas fritas. He tenido los squits por dos días, guijarros - rompiendo el baño cada pocas horas. La última vez que me pasó algo así era adolescente. Le recomiendo encarecidamente que evite este lugar a toda costa. Por cierto, los «guisantes húmedos» eran negros en lugar de verdes, ni siquiera los probamos, y el servicio era... hosco es la única palabra que se me ocurre. Este error del viernes 16 de 2024 me ha costado mi fin de semana, y nos ha hecho enfermar violentamente a todos. Aparentemente se trata de «los mejores fish and chips del noreste».

Your staff are very rude and very inexperienced. Very rude and wearing false eye lashes and false nails wich can fall into customers food..we complained two weeks ago. And one of your staff saw my partner in cost cutters.and came behind the counter and started to slag her off.not acceptable. Good fish shop ruined by greedy bosses.

Usually a very pleasant experience. Today ran out of mushy peas at 5.00 pm. Chips poor when usually crisp and fresh. Needs to get back up the expected standard. Fish fresh okay.

Absolutely superb fish and chips in the cafe.. I don’t think we’ve eaten better.. I would seriously recommend them and we will certainly eat there again when we’re next in the area.. First class..

Food is absolutely delicious, and the staff are awesome! You can tell they are happy to be there, and such nice people too! They recommended loads of great places for us to visit. Definitely recommend this place!

Popped in on a sunny June afternoon. Ordered fish & chips, scampi & small chips & curry sauce. Food was excellent, fish was flaky & tender with a light crispy batter. Lots of scampi & the chips were crispy on the outside, fluffy in the middle. Curry sauce was really nice & reminded us of old style chip shop curry without raisins which was nice! Staff were excellent, fussed over our dog & brought some water for her & gave her a sausage to take home as a treat. Top chippy, great food & staff. Good portion sizes & value for money….Highly recommended. Thanks

Really good Haddock, chips and mushy peas all washed down with a can of Ben Shaw's Dandelion and Burdock. Good portions and great service. Located just slightly out of the city centre.

Take away meal staff friendly and helpful

The food was really poor. Both the fish and the chips tasted like they’d been sat out for hours. Even my husband who can stomach anything thought they were gross. Unfortunately all ended up in the bin.

Nice clean chippy, pleasant staff & food was bang on. Chips, battered sausage, chicken nuggets and curry sauce.

I don't know what has happened to this place but it's changed massively,was great when the cafe was at the back,ordered small haddock n chips twice and the portion sizes went even enough for a child?! Never mind adult!!! ridiculously small fish looked like it had been cut in half! I mean seriously?? a total rip off!!! I'm fuming and sincerely wish I would of went back into the shop, Complete joke! Got home and now going to cook food, never felt so ripped off in my life,this place has seriously gone down the swanny,never going back, avoid if you expect NORMAL portions! I could of had a Sunday dinner for the price of this!!!! Disgusting,you should be ashamed

Great fish and chips and exceptional customer service

We live in Essex but visit York regularly, staying in this part if the city. They cook with beef dripping - a true northern chipshop with fish caught in Whitby. It is a truly locally run fish'n'chip shop that is reasonably priced.

The shop itself is clean and nicely presented. No sit in, counter only. There isn’t a massive choice of fish…just haddock or scampi that I could see. We were the only customers so our fish and chips was served quickly and freshly done. Nice crispy batter. Rather a smallish fillet but fresh, flaky and sweet. Chips were below par, but adequate and generous portion. Paid an extra £1 for homemade Tatare sauce but really it was simply big chunks of poorly chopped gherkin in mayonnaise and wasn’t worth it (although better than the highly acidic, chemically sachets sold as such). Approved of the compostable packing. Pleasant, efficient and friendly staff.

Picked up some chips to go with a pasty. Looked at reviews and was sceptical BUT it was raining and the closest to walk to. The chips were fresh and tasty! Don’t let the negatives stop you from trying something because you could get a surprise! The only downsize is the portion size but maybe our local is more generous? 🤷🏼‍♀️

Recently had the pleasure of visiting The Fishermans Wife in York - undoubtedly the best chip shop I’ve ever come across. The staff were incredibly friendly and the shop had a great atmosphere, everyone was very friendly and chatty. The food was fantastic, I had Haddock & medium chips. The haddock was flakey, all the fish is delivered fresh from Whitby which makes it extra special. The batter was perfectly crisp. Chips were just to my liking too. Overall can’t recommend it enough. Will be back again x

Haddock was large and flaky, cooked perfectly. Mushy peas were excellent, curry sauce was tasty and home made tartare sauce delicious, chips were plentiful and tasty, zero complaints here, will happily return

This used to be a great chippy when the couple from Bridlington owned it and the local family before that going back to around 1985. BUT they're overpriced compared to other local much better Chippys and mostly cannot get the basics right of how to fry Chips, having no set standards for quality like picking out the burnt chips or shaking the grease off the chips before serving. Their portion sizes are small also and they don't do large portions of Chips or small portions of Peas. I've not had Fish from here for a long time so cannot really comment on that. May benefit from some Staff Training to get back up to a higher standard like some of your other TFW Chippys.

Superb Fish & Chips and a friendly welcome. Had Small Fish, small chips and Mushy Peas for £7. The fish was plenty big enough and with light tasty batter. My friends all had fab food too.

The driest scabbiest chips we have ever had please don’t waist your money medium portion which wouldn’t even be a regular portion at other chips shops and at nearly £4 we feel like we have been robbed

We’ve been a few times - keep coming back in the hope it gets better, but unfortunately keeps getting worse. Fish is hit and miss (usually a miss). But the chips are very poor. Usually undercooked, small, and the portion sizes are pathetic. We only live a 2 minute walk and last couple of times they’re cold by the time we get home. Very unfortunate as it is on a road full of great food places. Bishy Road deserves better.

Really nice fish and chips and very friendly staff. Was just staying over a couple of nights in York and really glad we found this place. The staff serving were very generous and I would definitely recommend the food.

Fish just about OK, but batter was falling apart. Chips really bad. Like warm, soggy and chewy. They looked more grey than yellow. Definitely not worth the £8.50 I paid.

Just been to get some food to take away, my brother and I, and how disappointing it was. Wasn't it's usual good standard, chips were under cooked and a small portion (medium was ordered) fish was ok but nothing to brag about and battered sausage was way over cooked. And to top it off the 3 staff that were on were messing about with their phones, not washing their hands along with inappropriate tunes playing in the shop, this is how places lose stars. Disappointing experience today. Staff need to concentrate and pay attention to what they are doing. 😢

Just had chips , battered sausage , home made fish cake & pease , portion size ok services good with pleasant staff. Chips had a skin(made them a bit tough to chew) home made fish cake was cold inside not cooked , battered sausage batter was very good sausage was fine , peas where very good

I had the fish burger which was absolutely devine. The fish was light and flaky, the brioche bun finished it off perfectly. The fish burger wasn't massive but the perfect size if you don't fancy fish and chips.

Perfect proportioned Haddock, chips & mushy peas which were totally enjoyable & the staff, service etc was great. Highly recommended as a take out.

Had take away fish and chips not great quality great poor batter and fish was not very big. Chips soggy and greasy I will be visiting again soon terrible. Overpriced seems gone are the days off crisp piping hot chips and great batter and tasty fish it seems.

The unhelpful staff need some staff training. Used the Whitby one and it was great. In my top 3 of worst fish and chips ever. No large chips available, a medium chips is really small, not big enough to share. C'mon, £3.25 for one potato worth. Turns out they were cold and barely cooked so they saved on the heating too. Fish was warm & just cooked but hadn't been in long enough so the batter was closer to runny than crispy, not edible anyway. Not a matter of personal taste, just awful.

Had the Salt & Pepper Chicken. It was perfectly fine strips of chicken, and perhaps it was on me for expecting a perfect copy of the Chinese Chippy staple from such a traditional looking chippy, but someone needs to tell them that real Salt & Pepper seasoning isn't just a sprinkle of salt and pepper in the batter.

Not at all as we expected. Chips had been standing for a while. Cold and tasteless. Fish not much better. Had to put in microwave when we got back to caravan, just 5 mins away. Very disappointed and won’t be going back.

World class fish and chips. Fresh and cooked perfectly. Don’t change a thing. Update: based on experience today (29 April) I’ve lowered to one star. Think the normal cook wasn’t doing the frying and it badly impacted the quality. Hoping next time it’s backs to it’s usual best .

What can I say… The shop had some refurbishment works and is looking very smart and clean. The staff were extremely friendly and welcoming, I had Fish and Chips and they gave me a Homemade Tartare Sauce to try which was exceptional The batter was crispy, the fish was flakey and fresh and the chips were lovely. I did appreciate the staffs use of portion control, sometimes being over-faced with a mountain of food is not good and is wasteful. It was the perfect satisfying amount. The seemed to really care about the food and we had a lovely conversation whilst I waited for it to be fryed freshly. 100/10 would highly recommend

On my experience today, I'd happily use this chippy again. A gorgeous piece of perfectly cooked haddock with a reasonable wodge of chips at a decent price.

Used to be excellent. But now very disappointing. We went in. Waited 25 mins for disappointing food. Cold. Peas were hard. Fish was cold and stale. Chips were average. This is Yorkshire… and they never asked if we wanted scraps. This was my GO TO place for fish and chips. Management need to have a work because this place has become far too comfortable. Slow service, poor quality food.

Tonight’s supper was a tiny, lukewarm portion of chips that were barely cooked and swimming in grease. I threw them away. Vile 🤢

Just had two fish and chips with x 2 mussy peas. Not very impressed at all. Peas were cold, not warm but cold. The batter tasted disgusting. It taste like old batter. The whole experience not at all good. Both meals went in the bin.

We holiday in York quite a lot and this chippy is practically on our doorstep. When it's good, it's really good. But you have to check your food order either before you leave or outside as they often make mistakes, as in no fish or a missing chips order. This has happened frequently for us and I have never said anything bad but today was the limit. We bought fish and chips and just chips. The chips were, to be blunt, bloody awful. They were like bones and if the pet shop ran out of cuttle fish bones for people's budgies, then these chips would have been ideal. They should have been chucked in the bin, instead they served them up while frying a new lot at 7.45. (they close at 8pm) on a brighter note, their fish is lovely.

Fantastic food! Fish and chips was the best we had tasted! Visited twice on our 4 day break! All staff so so friendly and Kelly was amazing and so friendly, loved our dog Bella and give her a free sausage:) Thanks again Kelly, you made our stay in York a great one! Looking forward to coming again real soon.

We collected a take away for a family of three. Unfortunately the portions were very small and this them made it very expensive compared to other fish and chip places in the area. Very little batter on the fish and over all very poor quality.

Okay fish and chips, rude staff who hardly can be bothered to look at you or serve you. Try blue fin on hull road as they are much better all round.

A little conflicted. I only live round the corner so maybe go once a week and generally it's pretty good. Today I went and got a medium chips, I got home to find there was maybe a total of 20 chips in the box. Normally the portion I get is easily triple the size of not more. Bit of a joke tbh. Consistency is key.

A local to the caravan club site and a proper chippy tea place with them making a decision to do a fish of the day. So cod one day, haddock, pollock or whatever fish is available. There seems to have been a concious decision to make the food affordable too, so portions are good and not ridiculously large. The mushy peas and curry sauce were good and complimented the main course. Opens at 4pm and fresh cooked fish during quieter times.

Great customer service. We had a mistake with our order and Daniel was was quick to apologize and quicker to sort it out. Very impressed with both the food and the service

Small battered sausage, medium chips and a can came to £5.13. Chips portion size seemed very small and they were luke warm. Food however was nice once warmed up a little in micro.
