The Black Bull in York

We stayed behind the pub at the travelodge and ate here twice. The food was fantastic both for evening meals and breakfast. An amazing choice and ultra friendly and helpful staff. Will definitely return.

We had a wonderful experience at The Black Bull Hotel in York! The place has a really cozy and welcoming atmosphere, perfect for a relaxing meal. The staff were super friendly and made us feel right at home. I had the sirloin steak, which was cooked perfectly, and my partner enjoyed a chicken salad dish, both were delicious! We liked it so much that we ended up eating there multiple times during our stay. Great food, great service—definitely a spot we’d recommend! 👍🍽️

Food was lovely and reasonably priced, and our server George R was very attentive.

Such a lovely pub environment, we have been coming for 5 years and the service is incredible! The staff are always smiling and always good to chat too even when they are busy! The food is always 5* no matter what we decide to have! Huge shout out to Catie, who always serves us and make sure we are happy and everything is spot on! We will see you again!!

Stopped for an impromptu bite to eat and the food was very good. The pub was clean, tidy and fresh and George who served us was very pleasant and attentive.

Staff were all lovely, friendly and accommodating and we all enjoyed our food.

Good food options and a vast array of drinks on offer. Hadn't been for years and it was still the same friendly atmosphere. They had a pub quiz on which seemed fun and the place was very busy.

The food is absolutely amazing and the staff are so polite, special mention to our server George who accommodated our requests and made us feel very welcome.

Staff: There’s a 1 hour wait for food. Me: why’s that? Staff: Quiz night. Me: Is that every Thursday? Staff: Yes. Me: Anyone thought about putting more staff on so you can deal with the extra demand? Silence. It’s not like the place is even full. And the smallest single piece of chicken you can imagine.

All servers are friendly and attentive, service is fast even on a Saturday night, would recommend booking a table though. Really lovely and cozy place. Food is delicious and menu is impressive.

Came in at just before 9pm, staff everywhere, busy for the quiz, but nobody could do a pudding! Come on it ain’t that hard. Quiz was great though

Whilst dropping our young person off at uni, we called in here for lunch. Very welcoming atmosphere & friendly staff. Lunch menu was very good, reasonable prices (compared to other pub lunches in the city centre) and great choices. Ordered drinks & food which arrived soon after, just in time to watch the football on the big screen. We will be back here again.

While we have visited a number of times on this visit while the food to others in out party of 4 was very good mine was sub-standard. It was cold on arrival at the table. I complained and the waitress agreed it was not to the standard expected. I was given a replacement dish but remarkably this was no better. The slogan 'sizzling plate' was certainly not the case. At this point I asked for a refund. Quite a let down.

Every time we visit here we are welcomed like locals even though we only get to york 4/5 times a year. The pub is in an ideal location and has a big car park and those positives are before we even get inside. The manager Jill has always made us feel so welcome and Assistant manager Gav’s cheeky charm always keeps the Mrs happy too. The new refurb looks incredible. We just wish we lived closer so the black bull could actually be our local!

We arrived at around 18.30 and found our table. I ordered at the bar not having to wait. The food took around 40 minutes but we were told while odering it would be this long so no problems. The food was very nice. We will be back.

There on a pre-conference evening meal, Friday night, absolutely packed, but we got a great table, fast service, super food and reasonable price. Staff really friendly and efficient also. Loved it. Strongly recommend a visit.

The Black Bull Hotel is a sizzlers pub. There is a good variety of food on the menu. There is a wide range of beers lager and cider, but unfortunately, no hand pulled cask conditioned real ales. The staff are friendly and efficient. There is a pool table and a nice outside seating area and covered seating area. Dogs are not allowed in the pub.

Today the 21st October 2024. We visited the Black Bull, we have been customers for many years, always come here when we are visiting York on any special occasion. But today a lovely lady called Sophie served us our food. She was very frendly towards me, since I have autism. Great selection on the menu,great food,great service. Always come here in any occasion. I’m 11 from Helmsley

Bar staff are useless, you can be standing waiting to get served for ages and they just serve someone that just walk up, its not rocket science, you should not work in a pub if you cant manage the basics. never again.

Been here on a number of times over the years , good pub food and good choice of lager , ale and wine . Family and adult areas . Went once with someone in a wheelchair and it was no problem . If you don't like sports the TV's can be a little bit loud....... June and the hanging baskets are looking lovely , jus uset called in for bacon buttys very nice 😋........ January 2024 had a lovely meal staff good and...... helpful, service prompt. Nice atmosphere. The only thing letting this place down are the toilets, clean but definitely need up grading..... another update been in a number of times for a drink over the last couple of months everything good except for the toilets. The actual loo is clean but the door in and the walls and around the edges do need cleaning. Or even a complete overhaul, The radiator under the hand dryer definitely needs replacing

We came for dinner on bank holiday Monday. The pub was really lively and a good busy atmosphere. Staff were professional and friendly, informing us there may be a 50 minute wait for food, which was to be expected judging by the amount of people there. We have visited here a number of times and will keep on returning as you can’t fault the place at all, such good value for money and a wide range of food on the menu to cater for all tastes. We’ll certainly be back! A****

The food was okay and the service good but the kitchen closed around 9 pm (on a Saturday) and it would have been preferable if we had been informed of this. We tried to order dessert and were informed that the kitchen had closed 20 minutes ago. A bit disappointing

Great service at the bar while ordering. The food came quickly. We ordered Tandoori chicken sizzle and gyros sizzler. They were both delicious. We've eaten here many times and its always good but we were impressed today. Our two girls were happy with their kids meals. Always good value. Emily our server was very polite and friendly. A great value family meal.

I just wanted to leave a review after visiting The Black Bull this afternoon with my husband and 3 children. Our eldest daughter has multiple food allergies and recently been told she’s coeliac therefore makes eating out very difficult. The staff at The Black Bull were amazing !! They made her feel so safe and she told them what food she likes and dislikes so they could make her up a meal. She really enjoyed being able to eat out. As parents it’s always nerve racking especially as she carries epi pens. We will definitely be bringing her back. I wish all places were as accommodating as The Black Bull.

Have been here a few times and the food is always excellent. We all had different steak combo's tonight and every one was cooked perfectly. It's one thing to get the same meal right but to get all three meals cooked perfectly and served together is a real testament to the skills of the kitchen team. The rest of the service was equally amazing, friendly quick, checked we were happy with the meals. Would definitely recommend trying the Black Bull, reasonable prices, a good few offers and excellent service from Shell and her team.

Went for food with my family with young children.. we were seated at a booth and greeted in a friendly manor by all staff. Order was taken at the till..good range of drinks and we all wanted burgers.. they were filling and delicious.. reasonable prices and easy parking.good location

The pub is great for good value food and drink. We had the sizzler plates of the salmon and the sirloin streak both were hot and tasty. We were served by George who was lovely and great with dealing with my allergies and intolerances.

Friendly staff. Good food for the price. Only down side was kids in the adult side made a noise when I just wanted a quiet lunch

Was served by Lottie, (I think that was her name) she was very nice and polite. The food was brought to us in good time and was delicious. A member of the team came over to check if we were happy, which we absolutely was. A very pleasant visit. Customer from Sheffield and will be returning when back in the area.
