A good pub, clean, well stocked, good quality drinks served well, food on time and to spec and tasty, staff member was great obv been there a while... Still a big smile, greeting and service xxxx gard to find in a chain pub in this city but doesn't have a chain feel xx

Enjoyed another meal in this great family pub. Tasty food and a lot of choice, served quickly by Ben, and the bill was reasonable as well.

Food and service were good. Had the scampi and doubled up, good price and very well done. Drinks were slow to come but the food and service after that, made up for it! Thank you 👍🏻

Been here on a number of times over the years , good pub food and good choice of lager , ale and wine . Family and adult areas . Went once with someone in a wheelchair and it was no problem . If you don't like sports the TV's can be a little bit loud....... June and the hanging baskets are looking lovely , jus uset called in for bacon buttys very nice 😋........ January 2024 had a lovely meal staff good and...... helpful, service prompt. Nice atmosphere. The only thing letting this place down are the toilets, clean but definitely need up grading..... another update been in a number of times for a drink over the last couple of months everything good except for the toilets. The actual loo is clean but the door in and the walls and around the edges do need cleaning. Or even a complete overhaul, The radiator under the hand dryer definitely needs replacing

We came for dinner on bank holiday Monday. The pub was really lively and a good busy atmosphere. Staff were professional and friendly, informing us there may be a 50 minute wait for food, which was to be expected judging by the amount of people there. We have visited here a number of times and will keep on returning as you can’t fault the place at all, such good value for money and a wide range of food on the menu to cater for all tastes. We’ll certainly be back! A****

The food was okay and the service good but the kitchen closed around 9 pm (on a Saturday) and it would have been preferable if we had been informed of this. We tried to order dessert and were informed that the kitchen had closed 20 minutes ago. A bit disappointing

Great service at the bar while ordering. The food came quickly. We ordered Tandoori chicken sizzle and gyros sizzler. They were both delicious. We've eaten here many times and its always good but we were impressed today. Our two girls were happy with their kids meals. Always good value. Emily our server was very polite and friendly. A great value family meal.

I just wanted to leave a review after visiting The Black Bull this afternoon with my husband and 3 children. Our eldest daughter has multiple food allergies and recently been told she’s coeliac therefore makes eating out very difficult. The staff at The Black Bull were amazing !! They made her feel so safe and she told them what food she likes and dislikes so they could make her up a meal. She really enjoyed being able to eat out. As parents it’s always nerve racking especially as she carries epi pens. We will definitely be bringing her back. I wish all places were as accommodating as The Black Bull.

Have been here a few times and the food is always excellent. We all had different steak combo's tonight and every one was cooked perfectly. It's one thing to get the same meal right but to get all three meals cooked perfectly and served together is a real testament to the skills of the kitchen team. The rest of the service was equally amazing, friendly quick, checked we were happy with the meals. Would definitely recommend trying the Black Bull, reasonable prices, a good few offers and excellent service from Shell and her team.

Went for food with my family with young children.. we were seated at a booth and greeted in a friendly manor by all staff. Order was taken at the till..good range of drinks and we all wanted burgers.. they were filling and delicious.. reasonable prices and easy parking.good location

The pub is great for good value food and drink. We had the sizzler plates of the salmon and the sirloin streak both were hot and tasty. We were served by George who was lovely and great with dealing with my allergies and intolerances.

Visited for a meal with the family and enjoyed a nice meal and drinks, made even better by the great service provided by Kerry.

My experience was great. The ladies serving us were Izzy, Kara and Amy. They were very welcoming and kind.

Was served by Lottie, (I think that was her name) she was very nice and polite. The food was brought to us in good time and was delicious. A member of the team came over to check if we were happy, which we absolutely was. A very pleasant visit. Customer from Sheffield and will be returning when back in the area.

I was there today with a table of 6. The service was excellent, very efficient. The atmosphere was great, even my young children enjoyed their visit. The food was second to none. I ordered the mega mixed grill and with a very particular way of liking my steak the chef James nailed it. I'm known for sending it back but couldn't find anything to complain about. Would definitely recommend and be returning soon. 👍

We go to the York Races every year, and they let us come with 2 bus loads of ppl. They are very friendly and the food is very nice.

A really nice pub with a good atmosphere and excellent service, particularly from Lottie and Kerry! We arrived shortly after 21:00 so unfortunately couldn't get any food but we'll definitely be going back a bit earlier next time! The toilets were nice and clean which is always a bonus for pubs and very reasonable prices, so I'd definitely recommend for anyone in the area who fancies a pint but doesn't want to trek all the way into town. The weather wasn't great so we couldn't use the garden but from a glance it looks in line with the excellent quality of the rest of the pub.

Great food and desert menu, around c£20pp. Good cocktail list and very well priced compared to the city centre with a 2 for £8.25 with some signature cocktails for around £6.00. I’d recommend if you’re in the area.

What to say about this pub🤔🤔🤔 Firstly the staff are awsome they really earn their money there none- stop. The food, ok let's not dance around the 40 minute wait knowone wants to wait 40 minutes but if I'm honest " and I always about food " It was worth the wait ,now I. Gonna bit a bit picky here as I was just a tad let down by the description my fries advertised the fact their dripping in HOT sauce well imagine my surprise when I realised they were not !!!!! Note ( The menu didn't actually advertise "dripping" that's a food critiques artistic flair so to sum up Table 1 had good food served by friendly staff

Just went in for dinner and ordered a medium rare sirloin steak. Came out pretty much well done, was hard and chewy. So only had a couple of bites of it. Nobody even came to check if it wa OK, or even approached me to ask why I hadn't eaten it when I had left it. It's not exactly hard to cook a steak. The other stuff with it was fine.

*Really* impressed I have to say. Absolutely lovely food at very reasonable prices and the cheapest drinks round we've come across in York. Also speedquizzing, which is one of our favourite hobbies, so we'll be back a week on Sunday for our dinner, cheap drinks and the quiz! 👌🏻

Driving home through York and decided being a sizzler pub let's try the black bull . Well the sausage and mash apart from some charing were as white as snow and cold . The sizzling tandoori chicken was sizzling but looked and tasted like a reheated microwave dinner . Sack the cook or retrain him because that was the worst food I have had in ages . If we see ill tomorrow you will get a call

Been here a few occasions came here today at 12 o clock we had finished our meals by 12:35. Both got lasagne 2 for 11.75… what an absolute bargin! It was very tasty and delicious got a side of chips and some drinks. Can’t fault it one but, excellent service too.. Will be back again

All good until the quiz is on and you get lots of jumped up quiz experts. Claiming the earth is flat and vegan's will save the planet! That aside the food is good and the drinks are expensive. Service is average and the staff are ok! Edit - By putting a generic reply i would down grade the service to one star!

Staff were friendly, attentive and very helpful. The service was far more impressive compared to the 4 star Hotel we had previously stayed in. Our server ensured my partners meal was entirely gluten free. He went to extra lengths by checking with kitchen staff. Bar staff were informative and friendly too. A massive thanks to staff members Kerry, Gav and George for a welcoming and friendly visit.

We enjoyed a good meal here on Saturday, pub was busy but we were served promtly, special mention to Lucy, our server, who was friendly, polite and very efficient, would highly recommend this pub for a good value tasty meal.

Phoned up and booked a table on Thursday for the quiz. Was told by the man on the phone that we should book it for 8:15pm to make it in time for the quiz. We arrived at 8:15pm and asked someone about our table reservation as it was quite busy. We were told that we were late and that our table had been given away as they only hold it for 30 mins. We were confused as we were on time. We then got told that we were mistaken and that we’d booked in for 6:45pm which was completely incorrect as we’d explicitly said over the phone that we wanted to book for the quiz. We were then simply told there was nothing they could do. Very disappointing as we’d wasted the time to come here for the quiz and had already bought drinks

Just had a mega mixed grill,steak was so small,I asked why it was half size of sons steak and was told they both went on grill 8 oz. All food was clap cold,left most of it.my wife had a burger and chips and that was cold,out of the 6 of us that ordered on 1 persons food was warm.

Service is absolutely astounding, especially Catie and Kerry really make you feel welcome👍 Keep up the good work 👏

Poor customer service. Free table booked for 1945, staff would not allow us to sit for one drink at 1820. How ridiculous. Won’t visit again

We arrived and was greeted with a friendly face and polite staff, they showed us to our table, the table was in a cold dark area of the venue, we asked to be moved to a more cosy table, they got us one with no argument, we ordered a steak, a loaded surf and turf and an ultimate mixed grill, all the food was cooked perfectly to how we had asked, they came and checked to make sure we were happy with the food, the only thing I didn’t like was they don’t have pouring cream which I like on a cheese cake but that’s not the staffs fault, we are regulars at the black bull as the food is always spot on, it’s very reasonably priced and the staff are very nice, plus I can watch football if I wish, another bonus

Lovely friendly pub with good food and drink at a reasonable price. Staff where extremely accommodating and could not do enough to enhance the experience. We where staying at the Travel Lodge attached and ideal to eat a meal without travelling into York. It was a shame that they were not doing breakfast as would have also eaten there again. However, I can't recommend enough.

We had our Christmas meal here and the service was great and very welcoming (even helping us fix one of the claw machines). We were served by Catie and Kerry with Owen and Josh cooking up a storm in the kitchen 🥶

Service and food always exceptional! We've been coming up from kent for 10 years now as my son was at Uni but now lives in York and whenever we visit him we always visit you! :)

We were staying at the travelodge and went to book dinner after check in to be rudely told we couldn't book. We were told we would have to just come in and see if there was a free table other than that there was a pub down the road or we could do a click and collect and eat in our room. We decided to try and get a table and luckily we got one. The new staff were much more pleasant however the food wasn't fantastic. We also went for breakfast. Again the food wasn't great and the bacon tasted of burnt steak fat, probably from the night before. We wouldn't eat there again I'm afraid.
