The one star review below, is the most ungracious and obnoxious review I have read. So you were ticked off at being (presumably politely) asked to "sit where you like". Most people would find this a quite warm welcome, as was mine when we dined there. Sounds like you were quite determined to complain from that point on. I don't know these people, but I also presume that they have families, and commitments, just like the rest of us. How nasty it is, for you to predict and forecast you would "give them six months". It is a very brave decision to open a restaurant in this out-of-town location, and anyone with hostility like yours, should take a good look a yourself. We had a quite fantastic meal here, the food and the service simply great. Decent minded patrons who love great Indian cuisine, like us, will come back as often as we can. And we also have the good grace, to wish them well, and wish them every success. Give Babursie Castle a visit, I'd recommend !!

I have been eating Indian food since it first appeared in the late fifties early sixties, and I always judge a restaurant on the quality of a chicken Madras, accompanied by Pilau rice, plain Naan and Bombay Aloo.In all those tears I have tried hundreds, how did the Barbursie Castle rate ? Fantastic this must be one of the very best I have ever eaten, service second to non, atmosphere very comfortable price very good, in my opinion if you have tried the rest now try one of the best. I hope the rest of the menu matches that Madras, if it does the Barbursie Castle will do very well.p:s. The Madras was ordered a little hotter than normal and it was delivered spot on.

The Bumper Castle pub is now an Indian restaurant. My boyfriend and I went for a meal on Sunday to try it out as it has only just re-opened a few weeks ago. I had read a slightly unfavourable review so wasn't expecting too much. I was very pleasantly surprised. The restaurant is tastefully decorated and is bright and airy. We were welcomed in and asked where we would prefer to sit.The staff were lovely, friendly and helpful and obviously eager to provide a high standard of service which they accomplished and more. The food was equally good with the same care being taken, plenty of use of fresh herbs and spices. I particularly enjoyed the vegetable samosa I had to start but the Vegetable Rogan Josh was also tasty and full of flavour. They also do takeaway and my boyfriend agreed that we will no doubt take advantage this in the near future as well as returning for another meal.

We visited on the Friday after the “Grand Opening” on 22nd May, on arrival rather than being shown to or offered a seat we were told “Sit where you like” We ordered a dish that specifically didn't have prawns & were served 2 dishes that had prawns & when I complained were made to feel that it was our fault that the Kitchen cocked up. I ended up with a lamb & chicken something that wasn't on the menu - it was just OK. Considering the place had been closed for refurbishment you wouldn't have thought it, the atmosphere was bland, didn't have the feel of an Indian & the staff outnumbered the customers - They could do with taking a leaf out of the book of the new Turkish restaurant in town called Reina, that's how you do a place up & that's quality food & service. Overall the Babursie Castle experience was terrible, they are missing their market by a country mile & immediately need to up their game, attention to detail “IE give me the dish I ordered” & decor as given the isolation of the place they can't afford not to. I will be surprised if the place lasts 6 months, a year at the most.

This is a place with special memories for me so difficult to be objective. It is big, lively, quite an atmosphere and off a busy road. As a pub, it's a weekend social setting place to entertain and meet friends.

Took my Parents on Mothers Day but have been in the past, a couple of years ago. Disappointing that they'd run out of beef for the carvery but it was explained they'd gone through 4 joints. Service was great, lovely staff and food on the whole was good. Would have preferred home made yorkshire puds tho!

The Exhibition is a grand old pub dating from 1702 that is situated on a very busy junction opposite Bootham Bar in York. As you enter up the steep couple of steps you are greeted by dark and atmospheric front room which is split by the central bar, it's a mish mash of Victorian and Art Deco with every single bit of wall space occupied with old photos, paintings, brasses and other Breweriana. There are wood panels, glowing yellow lighting and rich dark red ceiling which envelops you into the cosy space. There's so much to take in, especially the Art Deco stained glass panels and large fireplace, you'd almost be distracted from the offerings behind the bar. Which are not the most exciting but there's at least usually a couple of beers from Brew York, Black Sheep and Timothy Taylors, all priced at the usual City centre prices. Where The Exhibition really excels is it's outside space, if you follow your way around to the back of the bar and down a fairy light lit corridor it opens out first into a large conservator which is used for group bookings and then out into what is clearly the biggest and best Beer Garden in York! A beautifully secluded long yard with mature plants and great vintage wall art throughout. The only slight let down is the rather Victorian toilets which could probably do with a bit of an update but otherwise this is a very much overlooked pub that is superb in Summer and would be nice and welcoming inside any time of the year.

A good back street pub, with some very good real ciders, including the excellent Dudda's Tun Bone Dry. No food except Sunday dinners. Used to be 5 stars from me, down to 4 now they force drinkers to listen to blaring muzac. Perhaps I should take to bringing earplugs

From arrival, to breakfast, to departure all the staff were friendly and very helpful. The only negative was our room was very small and was starting to show signs of age ( loose fitting, wardrobe doors hard to close and lots of paint chips and marks on the walls). The room was however spotless and the bed very comfortable. As others have stated, the room did get very warm even for December but once the radiator was turned down, all was well. Breakfast was lovely with plenty of choice and excellent service. We will stay again but probably avoid summer stays unless air conditioning is installed during a hotel refurb.
