The food was very sub par. Waitress needs to get another job as she either was having a bad day or hates her job.

Service incredibly slow...any time we went to the bar to ask for anything we were told to take a seat but the 1 member of staff then took 15 mins to come over each time (there were only 2 tables taken so practically empty). No kids menu and limited main menu. Ordered 3 pizzas at £16 each and couldn't believe our eyes when Chicago Town stuffed crust pizza from the supermarket freezer was put in front of us. Avoid avoid avoid!

If you want to pay £16 for a medium pepperoni Chicago Town pizza then this is the place! Shocking that this is what is served at a restaurant. A warning to other guests to avoid, as we will be doing in the future.

Would never go back, Ordered a pizza £17 (not cheap) The server was polite, she told us the pizza oven needed to warm up which would take a while or the pizza would be cold in the middle. Not a problem we waited. After a very long wait the pizza arrived The cheese had solidified it was that cold, Base was icy cold. Not just cold ice cold. We reported it to the server she apologised and said a new one would be made After a not so long wait a brand new pizza arrived it seemed to be hot but again in the middle it was still frozen. We had waited that long we just ploughed through and ate it. Right at the start the server said we will warm the oven so pizza not cold in the middle. This sounds to me like it happens a lot. The bases are obviously frozen maybe the pizza is as well. Not what you expect for £17 for a 12” pizza. The server reduced the bill for us which we appreciate. But it was an awful experience

This is the restaurant in the Hotel Indigo. As Indigo restaurants go, I would rank this one below Chester and Liverpool, but above Manchester and far, far above Glasgow. Bright and airy premises, this is mainly laid out for dining, so there isn’t a massive amount of bar seating, but what they have works. The bar is well run and sells a couple of draft lagers – nothing too exciting though, just Heineken and Amstel. The food menu is quite limited, mainly a pizza menu – used to do more in the past but I expect suffers a bit due to location – hard to compete with the plethora of offerings on Walmgate. Breakfast in the morning here is excellent – a full slate of cooked offerings are available, alongside a heaving breakfast table of pastries and other items. Operating the juice was complicated, but I got there in the end. The full Yorkshire breakfast was excellent – bonus marks for the big wedge of black pudding. Nice. Might be nicer if the lighting was dimmed a little in the evenings and if there was a bit more soft seating for drinks in the bar, but otherwise a decent venue if you’re staying in the hotel.

The Restaurant is part of the Hotel Indigo, but mainly serves the Hotel breakfast. However we were suprised to learn that we had to book a time slot for breakfast, presumably because the restaurant is small for the number of rooms in the Hotel. I understand this reason as it will minimise the wait time for people, but sometimes when on holiday, you don't know what time you will wake up and want breakfast. The service was managed by 3-4 people who greeted, took food orders (It's a la carte for cooked items), served and cleared tables. As a result there is no continuity as everyone is trying to do everything. This led, on our second morning, to us being seated, given coffee, and had our cereals and had to try and get someones attention as our cooked order hadn't been taken though others arriving after us had. The counter to this is the quality of the food. The cereal and fruit options were more appealing than most hotels as were the breads and pastries. The main difference was in the hot food, the scrambled eggs with salmon, was good as were the Eggs benedict, the poached eggs being cooked perfectly. All in all a good breakfast.

Visited this restaurant as we were staying at the hotel indigo and this restaurant is part of the hotel. When I booked I was under the impression this was a restaurant serving 'warm Yorkshire hospitality with delicious Yorkshire food' (as per the website) I was more than disappointed to find that this had been changed (nobody could actually tell me when!?) to a restaurant serving 7 pre made pizza's and NOTHING ELSE, literally nothing, not even fries! The weekend away was my husbands birthday treat and a lovely meal in the hotel should have been part of that -sadly not, no apologies, just 'sorry we don't serve real food anymore'. So we had pizza, it was nice enough, nothing special, and ordered drinks. I noticed that our bill was considerably more than I thought it should be so asked for an itemised receipt. The young lady looked suitably embarrassed and passed it to me whereby I noticed I had been charged nearly £4 in 'service charges' - I asked what this was and was advised that the till does it automatically????? I have heard of service charge for large groups but this was me and my hubby ordering a drink and pizza AT THE BAR. To say I am unimpressed is an understatement. Poor show from a decent hotel chain.

It pains me to write this review because our issue was not entirely the fault of the hotel but feel we need to warn other customers to avoid an embarrassing situation like we had today, we bought a voucher from groupon which expires end of November this year, the booking was made through the website and confirmed (I assumed with the restaurant) for 1pm today. After booking a day off work and travelling and parking in town we were told there was no record of our booking and they don’t offer afternoon tea anymore. Although perfectly polite no attempt was made to appease the situation I was simply told to complain to groupon. Now at some point this establishment has taken and been paid for groupon vouchers so I feel that a little more should have been done to try and honour the voucher or offer an alternative. As it happens we had no choice but to leave and find an alternative place to eat - (I’m heavily pregnant and without a booking on a busy Friday afternoon this was not easy). I would advise management to talk to groupon about this issue to avoid anyone else turning up before the offer expires!! The restaurant looked lovely but unsurprisingly we won’t be returning!

We’ve eaten here in the past and REALLY enjoyed the food and atmosphere. Unfortunately, due to lockdown, what was inviting is now a shadow. The room has been stripped down to bare essentials. We saw only 2 more people during our 75 minute meal. The waiter was pleasant and chatty; the food he brought was tepid and poorly cooked. As customers of the Indigo Hotel we’ve found this to be a perfect partner..But no more. I must add that the Hotel breakfast served in the same room was completely different - the food good and the service to match. Why is the evening restaurant so poor?

The restaurant looked inviting as we passed by so we called in for dinner, I wish we’d walked on! It was early evening mid week, only a few people in, the menu wasn’t very exciting but we decided to eat there anyway. Very attractive decor, with clean modern toilets, however the service was very slow and the food disappointing. We waited for 30 mins for our starter (soup of the day and deep fried Halloumi cheese and salsa) when it finally arrived, I mentioned how long we had waited and the reply was ‘the chef had to make the soup from scratch’. It was the soup for the day they should have had a big pot of it! The soup was just warm, the other starter was very cool and the salsa (actually a creamy spicy dip) was out of the fridge, not impressed. A further 10 mins after the plates were cleared the mains arrived, mixed grill and gammon. The gammon and meat on the grill were fine, no complaints but the chips were discussing..... big fat chunky wedges, soggy and burnt with the skin on, awful. The bill was £60 including one beer and a g&t.; We certainly won’t be returning

This visit was rather disappointing. The charcuterie board starter was of poor quality. The turkey served instead of the advertised ham was cheap reconstituted sliced meat, with gristle and grey meat. The cheddar cheese served had several sections of mould on one end, clearly the end of the block. When these issues were raised with a member of staff, the comment was made that they had recently had feedback that the board was the best a customer had ever had. The turkey and cheese was replaced, with slightly better turkey and cheese, which had clearly been used as the block cheese which had been used for grating.

Had a 2 night stay in the hotel and after all the other nearby restaurants were full, seams booking is required on those, we decided to eat in the restaurant, which was very empty, I think because of the odd menu. It’s mainly a tapas style so you need to order 2 or more dishes to have enough. The price does reflect that. We went for the more traditional burger and fish&chips.; There was no problem with either dish and can recommend, though the chips were ok to eat don’t be put off by the very dark colour.

Staying in the attached hotel, came here for dinner. Positives: the food quite high quality. Good flavours combined on simple dishes. Negatives: very patchy and slow service. Firstly waitress very keen to take order. Asked for couple min and she disappeared. Another guy appeared 10 min later to take order. Advised by waitress to order 3-4 dishes each from tapas style menu. Bit strange as prices vary massively. We used instinct and ordered 4 dishes between 2 of us. Right decision. The fish and chips is a full meal. Use the prices as a guide. Food took reasonable time to come. Food was very good. Would have had dessert/coffee but again waiting staff disappeared. Eventually went to bar to settle bill. Wasn’t even busy. Was a 3 star bordering 2 with service. Shame has good potential.

We arrived at 8.10 pm and ordered pretty quickly. 45 minutes later we were still waiting for our burgers even if there was only 3 other tables of 2. The waiter did not look annoyed to keep us waiting that long. The burger meat was overcooked so not an amazing meal. The staff is not friendly at all but the best part was the morning after. I received an email from Opentable, the booking system the restaurant uses, telling me that I did not show up the evening before and that was not kind. So at breakfast time I noticed the manager who was there the evening before and was the guy we told about our booking. So I asked him if he remembered me and if he can inform Opentable he made a mistake the day before and that we came to dinner. His answer: Not my problem, deal with Opentable. What a shame....

We enjoyed a Sunday lunch in the restaurant - we didn't stay in the hotel as we live in York. The restaurant was very quiet, which was surprising given our enjoyable meal/experience here. The friendly but professional service provided by the two waiters was absolutely excellent and couldn't be faulted. The food was amazing too. Beautifully presented with a range of colourful options and a great deal of thought and effort had obviously gone into its preparation. The red cabbage was particularly tasty. The retro restaurant, which is beautifully fitted out, sits on Walmgate pavement, so it's a great spot for people watching if that's your thing. Given the density of restaurants on this street this place can really hold its own. The day we visited the sun was streaming in. We will definitely be returning for another meal here. After being turned away from three restaurants that were fully booked, we found ourselves at No. 88. What a delightful surprise. Open and airy, quiet and discreet, we could hear ourselves talk across the table. One of us had the fish special - and special it was: perfectly cooked, garnished with white asparagus, minted pea puree, garlic chives, a bit of crab salad, and tiny, sweet, white potatoes. The other ordered a beautiful rare rib eye steak, garnished with a large portobello mushroom and grilled tomato. A choice of sauces was offered as accompaniment. Wines by the glass were adequate, and dessert choices tempting. Altogether, a delightful surprise.

I had dinner here with 4 friends recently. There was one waitress who was doing everything - giving out menus, taking orders, delivering drinks and meals. This meant that everything was very slow as she was busy doing everything .We waited a long time for our meals and unfortunately 2 of them were cold. They were returned to the kitchen to be heated and fresh vegetables were cooked .However the waitress couldn't remember which meal belonged to which guest.

Second time we have stayed at Indigo and we think that the new version of the restaurant is even better for breakfast than it was before. Efficient and friendly staff. Excellent value with a very good choice including some unusual options. Love the huge orange squeezer. Love the waffle iron even if I was not man enough to try it. Really decent coffee - and I am difficult to please in the coffee department. Generous and well cooked breakfast. What's not to like. No doubt we will be back and we will try you out for dinner next time.

Limited menu but the food is well cooked and presented nicely. My husband really enjoyed the pulled lamb pie and I had a very tasty garlic and herb chicken breast.

Well for most of you reading this the title may seem a bit cryptic, but we think Rhys the Restaurant Manager will understand lol! We have stayed here for 2 nights and eaten here the second night and we laughed from start to finish with the fabulous restaurant staff....however they were extremely professional, knowledgeable and just so warming to be around. The food was exceptional as was breakfast.....drinking at the bar until 11pm exchanging stories of life with Robbie will be a long lasting memory he was a fantastic barman!!! Marcos also at breakfast and dinner telling us of his life and just in general a lovely person who has a great outlook on life. All in all our experience hasn't been a typical hotel stay of just sleeping and checking out but getting to know the staff who make the place a wonderfully environment to be both for customers and its employees....don't want to leave and can't wait to return!! Thank you to all...you are a credit to Hotel Indigo York!!

New place on the ground floor of hotel indigo, clean and quiet place to eat. Stuff are friendly and helpful. Menu is simple but have good choices. I had hamhock for starter, it was pretty good, my risotto was good too but a bit salty for me. We were curious about the wagyu burger, we'd like medium usually, but it was a little bit overcooked. It is not on the cheap side for a place like this, but overall it worth to try

Called in for breakfast. After initially thinking the price was a little high at 12.95, for the full Yorkshire Breakfast, we decided to go in because the place looked busy and inviting on a miserable morning. The Breakfast was actually a bargain. Unlimited drinks, juices, toast, continental breakfast, pretty much everything you can think of, not that you could possibly eat all that because the full Yorkshire was plenty. A good quality selection of bacon, sausage, black pudding, beans, tomato, mushrooms, hash browns and a choice of eggs. The service was also excellent. Welcoming, friendly and efficient. We will call again the next time we are in York!

The restaurant is clean and well presented; the staff very nice and welcoming. I had dinner and tried the roasted bass with some sides... The dishes were average but there isn't much to choose on the menu...

We stayed over Christmas this year. Had a buffet style Christmas dinner. The Christmas pudding was my favourite!

We ate at the restaurant as we were staying in the hotel. The choice of food on the menu was a fairly standard fare, typically British in style. However, I was pleasantly surprised with the portions size and taste of the food. It was great to have hand-cut chips and good quality, well cooked mains. The sides were equally good. Also I enjoyed the ale selection and draft beer that was available from the bar. Service was ok and I would eat there again. We also ate breakfast in the restaurant which was excellent!

The rabbit tureen was an excellent starter, the sea bass was nice and the cheesecake was good. However the slow cooked lamb was not very tender. Staff nice and efficient

Stayed in the hotel and ate here. For one breakfast we ordered "smoked haddock & poached eggs on toast" only to be told we had to prepare the toast ourselves. It might be me but if an item is listed on a menu and its available then we does the customer have to prepare it. I would expect something better from a hotel of this standard.

We booked the restaurant based on the previous reviews and arriving at the restaurant on time we found it fairly quite. However, after booking starters and mains we had to wait nearly an hour for our mains to arrive. The only reason we could see for this was a larger prebooked party had arrived and our meals were held up to serve the larger party. During this time we were not approached once to ask if we needed anything else and were just on the point of leaving when our mains finally arrived. The food we had was excellent but the delays were disappointing as we had one younger daughter with us who did not have a starter and was very hungry by the time the food arrived.

2 dinners and 2 breakfasts would encourage us to return again. An attractive selection of standard meals and very good service, plus an excellent house red. Enjoy.

Restaurant is part of the Hotel Indigo. Prices are probably slightly higher than average but it's convenient. Menu not huge, which is not a bad thing, but there is reasonable choice. The starter sounded interesting and different but was disappointing. Reheated Yorkshire puddings, chopped chorizo and rather glutinous onion gravy which did not seem to be freshly made. The main course on the other hand was very good indeed. All fresh. Portion of vegetables was excellent and ample for two people. Sirloin steak was perfectly cooked to order. The hand cut chips were just that - seriously large chips, which were delicious. The rating reflects the quality of the main course.

We were a big party and had all decided to meet with the kids in York. Finding somewhere suitable for an early dinner with kids (7 of the little ones all aged 4 and under) and my goodness, we were so so impressed!

Food was 10/10. Barman service was a 10/10. He checked on me & my wife to ensure we were enjoying our meals. Always a nice touch in restaurants. Barman was also very happy to substitute items in our meal. Chef was very skilled in cooking - food was extremely delicious & lovely presentation on the plate. Seating area was well laid out & comfy seats. Noticed there was also a pool table in a seperate large area right next to the bar, far enough away from those dining which is perfect. Very good value for money as well. Paid £45 including tip for 2 meals & 2 drinks, one of which meals was a Sirloin steak. So very good price. Only disappointment was the gents toilets. I’m sure the light in the cubicle was not working. Other than that minor inconvenience. Great restaurant, and would definitely return when in the area.

Until you stop adding service charges to bills then you will only get one star. This isn’t America. We pay the menu price and a tip is optional. Service charges are just ridiculous and a cheap way to inflate the bill. The food was mediocre anyway so am not planning on returning.

Lovely place with plenty of room between tables. The menu is great and the food does not disappoint. The pheasant was beautiful and the portions are generous. The staff are attentive and they allow dogs. Well worth a visit. The owners are fairly new and I wish them good luck - they deserve it!
