My friends and I went to riverside farm for lunch a few months ago and the service was quick and efficient and the lasagne and chips were delicious and the staff were very polite despite being short staffed I enjoyed a chilled pint of Guinness too!

Not sure what was going on here today but absolutely terrible service received, firstly till set up for weekend prices so charged too much for our carvery meals, then no ice for drinks, then no cask ales available, then no pigs in blankets available at all and then once we went to get our carvery the Yorkshire puddings had not been made either. eventually they were bought out and you can see from the pic I would have been as embarrassed as the chef was to serve them to customers. The food was good so only one positive thing from this visit. Shame on you Riverside, I had bought my family here to celebrate wish I hadn't !!!

Categorically one of the worse 'dining experiences' I've ever had. We made a decision to pop over from the other side of the city to a) eat and b) allow the children to play in the soft play as a treat. Both of these were far from great life choices on a Sunday. We were greeted by the most disinterested young man in the entrance area, who informed us of "just sit anywhere you want" and "by the way, there's no beef left on the carvery" it was just after 4pm. We asked captain unhelpful if we could eat within the soft play area and he said yes. As we arrived we were met by a young lady on her phone and again had been to the same finishing school as the captain. We said that we would be eating and despite this it was still £11 for the children to gain entry to the soft play. Despite my instant thought of my money for food and drinks should really cover this, how could I let down the apples of my eye. We were given both menus but had to wait as the maitre d' of soft play, scribbled in black pen what food was unavailable, around 75% of le menu! We found a table of which there were many. The children went off to play me and the current wife then selected from the extensive remaining food items. We both selected the carvery and the children the usual unhealthy rubbish which seems to be the norm on pub chain menus. The beige selection. A few moments from ordering and paying I was informed that the carvery had finished as they had run out of food. It was 1630 by this stage. The literature signage boasting the kitchen was open until 8pm, but nowhere did it state the carvery finished at X time. After much of a fuss from her indoors and her dirty protest of now not wanting to eat, I duly approached our friend and explained that the love of my life didn't want anything else on the menu but a refund and I selected a burger as the choice of scampi or fish didn't appeal as it wasn't a Friday. Looking at the menu and despite their not being "any meat left" I cheekily chose the gammon from the Grill area if the menu to try my luck. I ordered both adult meals, gained a part refund and off I trotted feeling I'd had one the meat battle. I awaited anxiously for the tap on the shoulder......but it never came. During the wait, I tried to exit the soft play, our smiler friend was maybe away trying some of the snails chef had produced or she was polishing up on her french but the desk was empty. I couldn't for the life of me work out how to escape to the bar. I looked around and applied some logic that the eject button would be somewhere higher than a child would be able to reach (I make a point of not frequenting these places as not only does it effect my PTSD -went to creepy crawlies once during the school holidays once....but my head just can't cope with the bad parenting and Chelsea or Britney just not being on par with my two little angels) anyway I managed to escape to the bar. I joined the seemingly unnecessary queue and waited my turn to be served by some more disinterested youths. I watched as these two poor souls ran around behind the bar as a couple of ballerinas as other staff watched on in amazement of their talents, not once maybe thinking of helping their brother in arms out. I ordered 4 drinks and stated I was headed to the front line down over yonder. Nothing was said, the good luck grin was given and I headed back to the padded children's play cell. The maitre d had finished her snails and foie gras by this time and stopped me dead in my tracks. "No glasses allowed in here" I did think valid point, but then instantly thought why didn't brains inform me of this as I passed the time of day telling him of my impending doom down at the caged area for children. I lay down my weapons and returned to the bar to collect some less offensive drink ware. After expertly decanting 4 drinks into the lighter more child friendly vessels I went back to the table to be greeted with a smile that I had only seen many a year ago before kids from the trouble and strife. She felt my pain. The children's food arrived, put on the table and the server walked off. Whilst descended from cave man, we have moved on as a species and developed the ability to use knife and forks but maybe this had slipped our maids memory. I went to the desk, again to ask if we could have some of these newly fangled implements and fair play to her, as her phone lay silent she hot footed it to the main bar area and we had delivered 4 sets of cutlery. By magic despite there being no meat left, my wife's gammon meal arrived and was just about edible. My own burger won't win any awards no liked by the French (they do a fantastic medium rare burger in most places) however it was consumed. The children played on after eating theirs and managed to keep it down, made friends and thought they were on cloud 9 which for us at that stage of the day (despite being back to school they clearly were still pushing each others buttons being on one another's company) was a win. We walked away £65 lighter and with higher blood pressure than when we arrived. So in summary, the staff need a rocket, as if this was my place they would be at home facetime Chantel and not earning money. A carvery to run out of food by 4pm is unheard of The general downtrodden attitude and slack service has made me vow never to return again and I'm local and enjoy spending my hard earned money locally. This place has gone to the dogs. I'll await the bot or AI to reply as reading the reviews from months ago, nothing has changed. Greene King just don't care it seems.

Arrived with my parents around 6pm on Saturday evening to a menu that was not as advertised on the website. We were told that there was no pies or steak available so looked to order what we thought was available. On going to place our order, when we tried, we were told that two out of the four meals we were going to order were also not available (so basically we had the option of fish and chips or gammon and chips.) Also there was no hand pulled beer available and no milk for coffee for our allocated driver. The staff member at the bar tutted and rolled his eyes at me every time I had to go back to our table to try and get different orders from my parents due to it not being available. I think on a Saturday tea time this was absolutely disgraceful how can you be an eatery and NOT HAVE anything on the menu? To be honest we will not be returning this is not the first bad experience we have had here. We left and went elsewhere to eat due to the lack of food options and the not so polite staff.

Could tell the roast potatoes cooked from frozen, dry including the meat. Had drown our dinner in gravy just to chew and gravy was lumpy and so salty, Staff are miserable. Called in, and we were told that there was no food! This is the second time that this excuse has been used within a few weeks in 2 differemt places, both owned by Greene King. Last time it was at Berrybrook Farm in Wolverhampton. After the review was passed to Nikki the manager there, I had some flannel given to me about redundancies being announced so they had no staff. I didn't pursue it further, but I can't believe that this has happened again in a totally different part of the country!! At this establishment, I could see from the doorway that there was ample carvery, the girl told me it had to go round all who had booked, but she couldn't know whether that's what they wanted to eat? I told her we would choose something from the menu, but no, not allowed in. Hospitality clearly isn't in crisis if it can keep turning customers away. Unbelievable and poor service.

Went off to do other stuff, then came back and said just to go find any table, but there was only 5 mins to order as kitchen was closing. Loads of tables not cleared and hardly any customers in. Got the menu, and went to see the carvery which looked bone dry do wasn't going to be having that. Ordered from the menu and the food came out. All okay, tasted good. Then noticed about 30 mins later a full new turkey came out . Which was weird to say all the veg was dried up and they said the kitchen was closing 25 mins previously. We arrived and were told there was a limited menu which was fine. We went and ordered 4 meals and waited 45 minutes for the first 3 to come out, the guy who dropped off the burgers said the hunters chicken will be 2 minutes. We started our meals and finished them while waiting for the last one to arrive. After 15 minutes we collared a lady after she dropped off a different tables food. Who said yeah it was ready, she dropped it off and said nothing about the long wait time or the fact everyone else was done. We then ordered puddings 2 apple pies and a chocolate cake and as I'm writing it's been 35 minutes since we ordered this. The lady came over with icecreams for a different table at one point but wandered off. This was a regularly visited resturant however after this we won't be back. If you're prepared to be ignored, have to get your own cutlery, have staff members shout to their family while they're serving you and wait hours for your food then come here. :)

Absolutely appalling!! We are staying on holiday in York, & we were recommended this place, & we particularly wanted to find a carvery so made a booking in the morning for that evening. I got a voicemail message approx 2hrs prior to our booking, to be told there was no carvery, as they "had run out of meat"!!! We decided to cancel, but booked a couple of days later, & 'again', to receive a call approx 2hrs before our booking to now be told "there 'may' be no carvery, as 'this' time there was a 'low' stock of meat, but the carvery may be available!! We decided to still keep the booking, & when we arrived for our 7.30pm booking we were told dinner was not being served anymore!! We had driven especially for this, & we were fuming. I asked to speak to the manager who said he was one of them, & looked extremely young, & got rather flustered, & said there was no carvery as there were no staff, so were we lied to regarding the 'meat' situation?!... He said we could have a meal, but there was no fish, & no pie available!! We walked out absolutely disgusted, & there were other people outside who had also been refused a meal. The signage outside your pub is a glossy billboard stating FRESH CARVERY AVAILABLE EVERYDAY!! We will be taking this further with Greene King Head office, as this is not acceptable, & a large chain such as yourselves should not be allowed to operate in this manner!

Absolutely awful experience! 6.8.24 We visited on our way home as we always do when been up that way. As we pulled in we noticed how overgrown grass verges were and sign wasnt as visible, looked a mess not very inviting! The car park was empty pretty much to, as we walked in it lacked atmosphere it previously had, the young lad stood there and just grunted sit anywhere! he proceeded to just wander about in time we were there trying to make himself look busy! We ordered drinks and 4 carveries, went up to get carvery and stood waiting till someone came out, a young lad came out and filled a bowl with mushy peas and said wont be minute! Awful customer service! He came back out and proceeded to try and carve the meat, he butchered them!! He clearly wasnt a chef, he had long hair which wasnt tied back or a net on, he had joggers on and no apron on! We then asked about rest of carvery as carrots Brussels black, cauliflower cheese had no sauce it had all dried out, gravy dried up, mash yellow and hard, yorkshires were rock solid, other pots empty, roasties looked disgusting aswel! Girl who i assume was in charge came over and said bring fresh out well they all disappeared brought out couple pots then that was it, one being yorkshires that were still as hard as original ones! another lad came out and asked meats wanted and we said well dont as nothing go with it and also re serve mine and my sons as meat had gone cold waiting!!! They couldnt say how long till everything would be out! We got a refund which were told could take up to 10days! We finished our drinks then left! As leaving the rest food still wasnt out and they hadnt moved our plates that had meat on! We were told by a local all chefs had walked out after new management came in! The few staff that were there looked young and untidy! They lacked customer service and didnt look professional at all! Wont be coming back here unless new management come in and turn it around and reviews start to pick up! Very disappointing!

Visited 1.8.24 with my partner and her disabled son. Very quiet in the pub. Poor Bar service. The lad on the bar seemed confused with the till and especially the allergy question. Very poor Guinness - a 2mm head on it. My partner wanted to change her soft drink for a cider but decided against it due to the inability of the staff to use the till. No forks on the table. Food was appalling. I had fish, chips and mushy peas. The fish was so thin im surprised it wasn't transparent and the mushy peas were cold. Chips were .... Chips. My partner opted for the beef and ale pie, mash and peas. The pie was acceptable (bought in and warmed up I'm guessing?) the peas were .... Peas but, omg, the mash!!! Dry, yellow coloured, clearly been sat for ages if not warmed up from yesterday and very peculiarly tasting. No gravy. My partner and if her son's medical dietary did could be warmed up in the microwave for one minute and when they remembered to bring that, it had clearly been microwaved with the lid firmly on as it was disfigured by the heating process. Absolutely awful food. Gone downhill massively since I last went. We will not be returning and I encourage others to exercise caution. Both my partner and I feel quite green afterwards.

Never had any issues here prior but the service on the 20/07/24 was just abhorrent. Our food was taken to the wrong table and left there for 10 minutes before it was brought to us. I asked for mine and a child’s meal to be remade as they were stone cold and just plain inedible. The sever brought back out my onion rings that she had heated for me in the MICROWAVE and scowled at me when I asked for fresh ones! The onion rings still had a bite out of them where I’d tried to eat them and they were cold😂😭. The play area was absolutely filthy I have never seen so much dust in my life. It was also not manned by any staff for any consistent amount of time. I had to go and get somebody from the bar to let us in and pay. We were informed it was cavery only after placing orders on the app but they would make it as we’d already ordered. There were no signs advertising this.

We waited ages to be seated. Several staff appeared to be on a break together outside at the same time! It seems the kitchen was in crisis this day. The manager did come out to apologise for the limited menu, which I appreciated! However!!!!.... despite an extensive menu, only carvery was available on this early Sat evening. What was cooked was hot, with a variety of well cooked veg. Gorgeous mash, but NO roasters! Only choice of two meats! No condiments that you'd expect with a roast dinner. The lad that served us was clearly overworked, but very polite. Clearly doing his best to hold the fort so to speak! Although a waitress did fetch what l wanted later. And we were told the kitchen was closing so we we're not allowed to complete our meal with a pudding!!! My red wine was not the best and despite it being a Saturday evening and us holidaying close by in a hotel, we took our custom elsewhere. I appreciate every pub can have an odd day, but it was father's day the following day. We thought it might not put us off returning, but sadly, on checking the reviews afterwards, they were very negative for the Sunday 16th June too! Sou feel l could not recommend to others.

They were on a reduced menu due to staff shortages. This was made up by the fantastic staff there though. The food that was available was better than expected too.

Arrived at 8pm ordered food on the app and was informed that the kitchen closed at 8pm although the app clearly says 9pm and no signs available saying the kitchen had closed as the carvery area still had food on the counter. Was then informed that a refund would take 7 to 10 days. Hugely disappointed as we had our wedding reception here 25 years ago and just wanted to return for old times sake and staff had seen us sit at a table looking at the food menu and did not say a word which would have been good customer service

Dismal, the place itself is very tired and ready for a refurb, the level of cleanliness was very poor. The food was awful, the children's burger was inedible and the carvery looked and tasted like it had been hanging around for hours. Staff were friendly but under pressure and under trained. The menu was limited due to staff shortages.

Low staffing issue when we visited meaning there was a queue, long delays. Some customers were getting upset at the staff who were working tirelessly to serve - this was wrong and the service issues needed to be addressed to the management not the front line staff!

Absolutely appalling staff and attitude. We were not told there as a wait for gravy and was attacked with abuse from the staff and the manager. Not once was there an apology. We were accused of shouting at staff..which did not happen. After waiting 15 minutes with our dinner going cold we spoke to someone from the kitchen who came out of the kitchen with no apron or kitchen wear on. He said I am not the manager but what do you want. Very clever and cocky. Hope something gets done about this.

3 of us turned up at 4.20 yesterday and followed the procedure of waiting to be seated. Asked if we had a reservation. When we said no we were told it was full. We pointed out the many free tables and less than half full car park and were then told that they were short of kitchen staff so couldn't cope . No please, in any thank you or sorry in any of the reasons given. Eaten here over the years but won

No main menu. Reduced to burger, carvery, steak pie, scampi and 2 other items. Waited 15 minutes at the bar whilst 2 lads passed me 3 times. The other guy who seemd a bit older was pouring water into a jug for gravy or something. Food looked bloody awful, very small portions and only turkey and gammon. We, and several others walked out. Gone to the sidings which was spot on

Attended earlier this evening. Virtually empty restaurant and no wonder ads poor. The service was really poor. Took ages for the food to be brought out and a further 45 minutes for 2 of the 4 puddings to be brought out. 10 minutes later, pudding 3 arrived and a further 15 minutes for pudding 4. The waitress appeared fed up with no apology and didn't say a word when dumping the puddings on the table. No wonder the place was nearly empty with only 3 other families in. Not rushing back.

The staff are lovely, and that's the only positive thing to say about this visit unfortunately. Having visited several times in the past, this has to be our final visit. I fully appreciate that the pub was very understaffed BUT, it took 45 minutes to get some overcooked food from the kitchen. The order was totally incorrect, and the portion of chips was pathetic. The carvery deck was almost empty, and the venue was a lot quieter than it would normally be. The few tables that were present, were, without exception, chuntering negative thoughts, and quite rightly so. Normally I would bring this utter shambles to the attention of the duty manager, but had places to go, and didn't fancy spending another 40+ minutes, waiting a replacement meal. You have been warned - attempt dining at your own risk, you're sure to be disappointed.

We were told several times they were short staffed in the kitchen but the bar staff appeared poorly trained and inattentive. The food was quite tasty but we had to wait over 20 minutes for gravy for the carvery and the vegetarian option arrived after the rest of the party had finished their main course. Very poor service. We won’t be back.

Called for early evening meal. Wish we hadn't bothered. The Meat was ok and the Yorkshire pudds but everything else was was dreadful. Empty dishes with a little dried out veg in the bottom uneatable red cabbage too hard to chew, and can't even start to describe what was supposed to be cauliflower cheese no sauce and looked like solid porridge. Dried out stuffing and when they brought out a new dish was not cooked. I have used many of these carveries this was not good. Needless to say I ended up with a very upset tummy next day. This is definitely one to avoid at all costs.

Went to wacky warehouse with my grandchildren yesterday Saturday 4th may the children loved the warehouse and the staff were fantastic and friendly then we went inside the restaurant for a meal. We waited over an hour for our food to come out. Then waited an extra 10 minutes for one of the meals to come out. The children’s meal was ok but the 2 adults meals were cold the hunters chicken was so tough you couldn’t cut it, so the 2 adults never ate and got refunded leaving 2 hungry adults. We waited so long for our meals the 3 year old had a complete meltdown so never ate his food as he was too upset having waited so long. There only seemed like one member of staff working in a very busy situation . Do not recommend anyone to eat here unless you don’t mind cold food

I said did know that, their response was we didn't know that you didn't know. When I asked why I wasn't informed, it's not there job. Green King pubs in general, serve cold food, get orders wrong or do not complete orders. What a disgrace. I welcome comments from Riverside Farm

On the day we went they seemed to be massively understaffed. Maybe Illness or something but there were not enough. The ones working were friendly and trying their best though. Food was not great, long waits for some of the basics (roast, yorkshires and mash). Meat was ok but not generous portion, veg not great. Bar staff very friendly and servers doing their best under what appeared to be difficult conditions

We've had some good carvery's here over the past 6-12 months but yesterday was a terrible experience. Not sure if there has been a change of management? In the past the staff have been friendly, welcoming and personable. Yesterday the staff seemed more interested in watching the football on TV and talking to their mates in the bar. The carvery had no staff for 15-20 minutes, then when he did appear we kept being told there were no roasts or no Yorkshire puddings or whatever, everything was going to be another 10 minutes for this 5 minutes for that. The food was very average when we did eventually get something. There are too many other decent places in York to risk this again. Very poor all round and won't be going back anytime soon.

Unfortunately I have to give a little very low score. My son in law booked a table for 6 people, it was for my daughters birthday (his wife),he'd phoned the day before to check all was still OK, which it was, and he phoned on the sat morning to make sure it was OK, which it was. When we arrived at 6.30pm,our table wasn't ready and they didn't have one available straight away, my son-in-law told them that he had phoned that very morning and was told all was OK, we waited about 10mins before they managed to get a table for us. My son-in-law and hubby went to order the food and it took nearly an hour before we got our food. My daughters steak was cold, my granddaughter's steak was barely warm and some of my husband chips were uncooked and my mash was a horrible colour. So all in all not a very good experience, which is a shame because I have had meals there before and they were lovely. I don't think I will be going there again.

The Exhibition is a grand old pub dating from 1702 that is situated on a very busy junction opposite Bootham Bar in York. As you enter up the steep couple of steps you are greeted by dark and atmospheric front room which is split by the central bar, it's a mish mash of Victorian and Art Deco with every single bit of wall space occupied with old photos, paintings, brasses and other Breweriana. There are wood panels, glowing yellow lighting and rich dark red ceiling which envelops you into the cosy space. There's so much to take in, especially the Art Deco stained glass panels and large fireplace, you'd almost be distracted from the offerings behind the bar. Which are not the most exciting but there's at least usually a couple of beers from Brew York, Black Sheep and Timothy Taylors, all priced at the usual City centre prices. Where The Exhibition really excels is it's outside space, if you follow your way around to the back of the bar and down a fairy light lit corridor it opens out first into a large conservator which is used for group bookings and then out into what is clearly the biggest and best Beer Garden in York! A beautifully secluded long yard with mature plants and great vintage wall art throughout. The only slight let down is the rather Victorian toilets which could probably do with a bit of an update but otherwise this is a very much overlooked pub that is superb in Summer and would be nice and welcoming inside any time of the year.

It’s a campus canteen so don’t come with expectations that don’t remember that point. That said, food is cooked and presented well beyond any canteen food I’ve ever experienced and the salad bar is by far the freshest, tastiest array of salad you’ll ever be served. Friendly staff too. Enjoy!
