We stumbled across this gem at the recommendation of our driver. It ended up being our favorite place. Alex and Angus are not only skilled bartenders and servers, but they genuinely are great ambassadors. My only reservation about writing a great review is the fear that we won’t be able to get a table next time!

Really brilliant Sunday roast, we all had the beef and it was served pink as promised and was so soft a baby could probably have eaten it 10/10. The starters were brilliant too, I loved the mackerel and the spring onion soup was also great. Surely one of the better roasts in York and only £25 for two courses, proper stuff.

My fiancé and I had a fantastic meal here. The service was phenomenal, from just the general demeanour of the staff, right down to the manager going out to grab gluten free crackers so I could have the cheese plate. So disappointed with our Sunday lunch today! We were really looking forward to experiencing an excellent meal based on reviews but sadly that was not to be! Firstly the staff here are lovely and the venue is really quirky. However, if you are expecting a hearty Sunday roast you will be disappointed. The portions are really small, the beef was tough and tasteless and the huge Yorkshire pudding was frankly a waste of space. We left still hungry. This was style over substance! We did get one meal refunded and the service charge removed but if you want a decent Sunday roast look elsewhere!

Our first visit to this hidden gem, just off the beaten track and tucked away near the riverside. It was recommended by some friends and had glowing reviews so we were really pleased with the food and the service. Sunday lunch. The beef was melt in the mouth. The veggies however are what stops this being a 5 star review. All the veggies were under seasoned. I don’t as a habit add salt to my plate today I did. The cauliflower cheese was in parts so hard I struggled to get a knife through it. The roast potatoes had a look of those that are deep fried them finished in the oven. Again some were still a little hard not as soft and yielding in the middle as I prefer. Dessert we plumped for the posset and sticky toffee pudding. Both superb. The service was great and the atmosphere was warm and welcoming with a vibe that suits both young and the not so young. I will happily return we paid over £40 per head but that included wine and a healthy tip Tomorrow we are driving up to the sister pub The Stone Trough Inn @Kirkham Abbey

This place was a very pleasant surprise in York. We came for the meat, and stayed for the wine and gorgeous desert. Their wine selection is very good and we ended up drinking one of their recommendations which was a surprisingly smooth Colombinan “14 hands” red. We started with some pardon peppers and pigs’ cheek, followed with a ribeye and t-bone, with the meat cooked to perfection, and in between tried the Sicilian lemon and Aperol spritz sorbets (sweet and tasty). The final surprise was the Banoffee bread & butter pudding with ice cream, which was one of the best puddings I have ever tasted, with smild flavours of peanut, banana and raisins. Highly recommend

Based on the amazing reviews we booked dinner for our first night in York. Sadly we were very disappointed. The beers we ordered came cloudy and tasted strange. The waitress apologised said it was the end of the barrel, and she would bring some fresh ones. The bottle of wine we had ordered duly arrived but the beers never did. The advertising for the Whippet quotes amazing steaks, which is one reason we booked. On the menu all steaks said ex dairy which we now understand means dairy cows past their milk producing age and put out to grass. Unfortunately both the ribeye and fillet steaks were cooked as requested but tough, and we didn’t finish them. Our experience fell well short of the claims and we would be wary of ordering ex dairy meat in future. To be very fair, when we complained to the Manager he apologised and significantly reduced our bill .

Underwhelmed and overpriced. Starter looked as appetising as cabbage soup and was so salty it was inedible. Was told it was meant to taste like that with it being miso ( I cook with miso and it shouldn’t!) given the fish was the main cost on the dish to take off 50% was laughable… leaving me to pay £7.50 for a few shaved radishes, puffed vermicelli and a few bits of nori. Had steak next which was not brilliant it was in my opinion tough; chips a fraction undercooked as the inside was firm; and a rocket, Parmesan salad with sherry vinegar dressing… I failed to find the dressing the rocket was dry and the bowl was dry so think it was missing. We declined dessert as didn’t want to be disappointed by a third course. To be fair to our young server he was lovely!

We went for sunday roast last week for my husbands birthday after trying to book for a long time due to its popularity. We ordered 4 beef roasts. The food arrived and we couldnt believe the small amount of food that came. 1 yorkshire pud, 3 tiny pieces of beef, 2 little roast potatoes and 1 slither of carrot. A very small dish of red cabbage and cauliflower cheese, between 4 people, with no serving spoons. We asked for 2 spoons and extra gravy for us all. 1 spoon was thrown onto the table and a tiny ladle of gravy for 4 of us. A young female staff member, asked how our food was and we replied it was average. She laughed and walked away. She came back and asked if we wanted desserts, i said we were dissappionted and would rather not, but as this was 2 coarses for a set amount, how much would she reduce this by? she said that wasnt possible. I said i wasnt happy. Eventually, she came back and said she would take off the price of the desserts. Dont waste your money on this place, we walked away hungry and will never go here again. What i thought would be a lovely experience was just another rip off and a birthday treat, that was totally over rated

We had a delicious meal here on Valentine's evening. Everything we ate tasted beautiful; scallops, burger, steak and onion rings. The wine accompanying our food was also delicious. The friendly staff asked if we had any questions about the food and the service was excellent - helpful and attentive but not overbearing. We have been to The Whippet four times now and will continue to eat here. Everything is always to the highest standard.

Absolutely loved our visit to The Whippet Inn. We booked our table as we went on Valentines night. Love the decor and the intimate feel of the room. I had the Ribeye steak which was cooked to perfection - the best steak I have ever had. It jumped into the No1 position after one bite. On the side I had the truffled Parmesan and black pepper fries. My husband had The Dogs burger which he really enjoyed. We shared the onion rings side. All of it was simply perfect - service was fabulous, food was incredible - will definitely return in the future.

We arrived 25mins early to be greeted by Rob with the top knot. He told us he had nowhere to put us as they had no bar area and to go for a drink elsewhere and to come back later. Not the best start !! Food wise the starters were very average. Our sons ordered the burger which I have to say were good. Our wives ordered the fish which was ok. I ordered the £36 signature fillet steak which was 2 thin slices and should not be described as FILLET !! My friend ordered the T-bone which he left after a few mouthfulls as it had a terrible after taste. He asked the waitress to take it back to the chef to taste for himself to be told by Rob with the top knot “it tasted good” sorry to say Rob but your taste in a good steak has to be questioned. Overall a poor start followed by very poor expensive food. Toilets were a disgrace!! Avoid

I recently had a fantastic Sunday lunch at The Whippet Inn in the beautiful city of York. It was a charming pub that felt very warm and welcoming. It’s easy to find and just off the main shopping area in the main city. They run a 2 or 3 course set Sunday menu, which felt well priced considering the quality of the food I had. I chose the pork terrine to start, which was beautifully flavoured and really moreish. For the main I had the roast chicken, which was served with possibly the biggest Yorkshire pudding I have ever seen! The roast was truly fantastic, and every element was very well cooked and flavoured. The chicken was beautifully moist and was the star of the show. The cauliflower cheese was also amazing. The service was very friendly and efficient, and overall I throughly enjoyed the whole experience. If you’re looking for an amazing Sunday roast in York - make sure you give The Whippet Inn a visit!

A little disappointed in the food here. I decided upon the fillet steak as there was no option for sirloin available. It was cooked perfectly but lacked seasoning. I chose triple cooked chips with mine and these were lovely. My wife decided on sea bass and was not blown away by it. Not a great selection of beers to choose from sadly.. the restaurant itself was very nice. The staff were very attentive and helpful. It was a little on the pricey side of things but generally worth it.

Had Sunday lunch here - fantastic beef, amazing Yorkshire puddings and roasts. Completed with delicious sticky toffee pudding. Service friendly and efficient - I really don’t know what prompted the poor reviews - I highly recommend the Whippet Inn!
