We recently dined at The Whippet Inn, and while the food was the highlight, there were areas that could be improved. We ordered steak and Yorkshire puddings. The steak was cooked to perfection—juicy, flavorful, and satisfying. However, the Yorkshire puddings were a bit of a letdown. They lacked flavor, especially the bottom part where the dough was the thickest and quite bland. The biggest downside was the slow service. It took much longer than expected for a single-course meal, and regardless of whether it was intentional, slow service isn’t ideal. The pacing felt off, and it seemed like the cooks were assuming their own timing preferences without considering the guests. A prompt service would’ve definitely elevated the experience. Overall, the food quality was decent, but the service and some aspects of the meal didn’t live up to expectations.

We've been trying to get to the Whippet in for a long while since my wife had a great experience there on a work function. We finally got a birthday as an excuse and a babysitter to look after our boy, so we made the move surprised to find a vacancy with so little notice. However, I don't think we'll be heading back any time soon after the experience we had for a Sunday lunch. We moved tables because there was an awful stink of toilets/damp in the back room that we simply couldn't ignore. When we were moved, we were told not to worry about the starters as they wouldn't go cold. Unfortunately, the chicken terrine is better on warm toast than stone cold. And it also tends to be better when fresh, but it looked to be days old and properly dried out. The mackarel was thoroughly underwhelming too...just mushy and unexciting. The little caviar (or alternative equivalents) were a nice little touch adding zing to the dish, but otherwise a disappointment. The roast beef was pretty decent to be fair, but we never got a Yorkshire pud even though all our neighbours had some pretty chunky ones on their plate. We also indulged in the dirty roasties that were ok, but really not that brilliant for and extra £6.50. But the gravy...dear god the gravy. Chef had clearly used far too much gelatine in the gravy to prevent spillages on the way down the stairs, but that was ridiculous. It would have stuck to the wall if you'd tried! I'm all go for thick gravy, but that was nasty. We sampled a couple of wines by the glass and they were good, and freshly/recently opened. The prosecco we had to start was pretty poor though - a sweet start with a very bitter, slight anaseed finish. No alternative options except for a £29 half bottle of Nytimber which would have been great, but not at that price. Generally speaking, I felt the wines were pretty heavily overpriced. The Hochar can be bought at £18 retail and is being flogged here for £50 - that's an offensive markup. Decor...I don't usually make comment on this but I thought it was completely disjointed. The dining areas are fairly consistent but then you head to the loos and you've got a varnished OSB and exposed service facing a fairly traditional black and white sink and vanity arrangement - just weird. OSB needs replacing and an interior decorator needs to have words. Staff were friendly enough, no issues there. And they took the table move with grace - absolutely no qualms with that. Then we got the bill, and I'm still sore about it. It came to £52 which was way less than expected...because they'd forgot to put the main courses on. I was honest and suggested they review it before we pay, just about doubling it to £106. But diner be ware: its £4.50 for the olives, and a further £4.50 for the small slice of oily bread! That is just daylight robbery, and completely unclear on the menu. Too many irritating niggly bits that just stacked up to a disappointing experience. I wish we'd just paid £52 and walked away - that would have been good value but unfortunately we'll score that one off our list.

The staff was lovely, and the service was attentive, which initially gave us high hopes for the experience. However, the food turned out to be quite average, leaving us feeling disappointed, especially given how expensive it was for what was offered. The starter soup, for instance, was bland and lacked any real depth of flavor, tasting like something hastily put together. The main course, a standard roast, was nothing special, with flavors more akin to what you’d find at a Toby Carvery than what you would expect from a place that boasts nearly five-star reviews. My partner ordered the mushroom Wellington, which sadly was very dry and lacked the richness and texture you would hope for in a dish like that. To add to the disappointment, we noticed a striking inconsistency in the portion sizes served at different tables. While my roast came with two very small slices of beef, the table beside us had significantly larger portions. Even the sides, particularly the greens, were laughably small—barely enough for a spoonful per person. It felt as though we were being shortchanged while others around us were receiving far more generous servings. The experience left us with the impression that this place is more about its Instagram appeal than delivering on the quality and authenticity one would expect from a well-reviewed pub. It seems like the kind of place catering to wannabe ‘food bloggers’ rather than offering a true culinary experience at a fair price. Ultimately, it wasn’t worth the money, and we left feeling let down. Such a shame, especially considering the potential we initially sensed from the ambiance and service.

One of our favourites from years gone by, returning after a loooong layoff we were pleasantly surprised that the service and beer choices had remained top tier. We moved from the tap room to the restaurant for dinner, and whilst the decor and the service was maintained, food quality was not as we remembered, being, OK. not bad, just not memorable. The three of us ate various meals and all came away, if not disappointed, not exited. Angus was great and we had a good time otherwise. Hmmmm, back again in a couple of weeks so will try again.

We visited for Sunday lunch. We arrived early and were offered to sit at our table before Sunday lunch. We had a pint of Leeds Brewery Lager (like Peroni the helpful staff member mentioned) whilst we decided what to have. We both had beef. It came rare, and the menus noted this. It was absolutely perfect. Just the way we like it. The yorkies were huge, light and delicious. Clearly an elevated Sunday lunch which we completely appreciated. Probably one of the best we’ve ever had. Pudding was gin lemon posset with a raspberry sorbet and meringue pieces. It was absolutely stunning. The perfect palette cleanser after the roast. The atmosphere was as great. It was packed by 1pm, but not uncomfortably so. The waiting staff were all so attentive, and friendly. Honestly, the whole experience was just amazing. Don’t delay. Nice setting and extensive wine list. A little disappointed with the food and based on photos of others, perhaps we just got a little unlucky. The crispy, massive Yorkshire pudding was nice and light but needed more gravy. We asked for some more and were brought a minimal amount for two people. The carrot was well-cooked, as was the meat. We ordered the cauliflower cheese as an extra side which tasted lovely but definitely needed more sauce as the cheese on top had gone very crispy. The brownie with espresso chocolate sauce was delicious but again, needed more sauce/ ice cream. It was a very generous portion but sadly we weren't able to finish as the sauce was lacking. We passed this on to staff who were pleasant and did say they would pass on the feedback for future reference.

I expected so much more from this restaurant. The menu was limited. The food arrived, I had the 7oz fillet steak and my wife had a puy lentil offering. The steak seemed small for 7 oz, the chunky chips were dry and tasted like they were from a budget frozen range and not fresh. We had onion rings which came with barbeque sauce on them - no choice and did not compliment the meals in any way. My wife's puy lentil wellington (pasty) was absolutely bland and tasteless, On a brighter note, the staff were pleasant and the cocktails were ok. The coffee I received at the end however (flat white) was one of the best I have ever had. All in all this is not a cheap night out but the food did not reflect this. Could not recommend it at the wild prices they charge.

I regret we went there to eat. Food was okay, no good no bad, just ordinary. We were quite starving so can’t be very good at judging it. Service was 3 out of ten. People who came later were served first we mostly were ignored by staff and we were waiting for our food which was quite simple for over an hour. In the end we got a bill with tips included what was quite a joke considering the time we spent waiting for a food. I don’t know was it a wrong time or something else but I would not recommend this place to anybody who is starving and wants to eat.

WOW, WOW, WOW! Save up, sell the children, sell a kidney, whatever it takes go get a steak at this restaurant. Incredible menu. Haven't seen Orin Swift in York since I've been here (a year now). A dirty Martini with the owners vodka phenomenal. A glass of Pinotage, so lovely. If you haven't had a Pinotage please don't dismiss South Africa's competitor to a Cabernet. So much more better per cost. Smoked salmon, beautiful presentation but I would have liked a little more creme fresh and pickles. I loved the pickled carrots tho, and the rye bread accutermonts were incredible. Bread is so different in the UK. The sprinkling of cavior was a nice touch. So delightful. The steak... Well my first reaction was "they didn't season it", which may be a Chef's choice. You can always add your own salt and pepper. But I did have an initial reaction of "Ohh...". The char was lacking, clearly cooked in an oven and not grilled. Maybe a broiler. A Texan might turn up their nose. However it was perfectly cooked. And the broccoli side dish was without criticism. Absolutely delicious! Overall one of the finest dining experiences I've had in York. Honestly the next closest experiences has been in Dublin and that's a bit far to go for dinner. So, I cannot overstate the dining pleasure that The Whippet Inn delivers. It's what we all need - dare I say weekly. What else are we working our assess off for if not for an evening being catered to and dining on some of the finestly prepared foods that money can buy. Michelin you missed this one.

On a weekend visit to York I spent about an hour reading reviews and recommendations online for a delicious Sunday roast. I decided on The Whippet Inn after reading lots of reviews/recommendations from visitors and locals. Well.... I cannot recommend enough! Absolutely delicious. We live in Norfolk and always try different places for a great roast dinned in our area and when on holidays/visits, and this was probably the best we've had. For any roast afficionados... The beef was fantastic, just pink, super tender and flavoursome, and no sight of any fat or cartilage etc. A nice lean cut. My partner had the chicken which was equally as good. Perfect yorkshires, all the trimmings. You can order cauliflower cheese (it's an extra you have to order on the side) which I'd highly recommend, the best cauliflower cheese we've ever tasted. The cauliflower was so soft and cheesey it just melted in the mouth (drool). Followed by two fab desserts - sticky toffee pudding and lemon & gin posset. If you enjoy a great Sunday lunch - a must visit! Perfect 👌 thank you

Firstly the staff here are lovely and the venue is really quirky. However, if you are expecting a hearty Sunday roast you will be disappointed. We booked for Sunday lunch , recommended as it’s very popular, rightly so as the food is excellent. Melt in the mouth roast beef and succulent roast chicken. There was a reasonably priced wine list with an excellent Cabernet Sauvignon that complemented the beef perfectly. Icing on the cake was the staff who were attentive, efficient and friendly.

Outstandingly good in all respects: ambience, drinks, service, price, and I challenge you to find a better roast beef Sunday dinner. Top drawer by any standards. Highly recommended.

I booked a table here as I really wanted to try their roast which had good reviews. I was disappointed to learn they stopped serving them at 1630 and my table was booked for 1730. However I quickly found a substitute and it did not disappoint! Ribeye steak with a side of duck fat potatoes and the pea, bacon and baby onion salad 👌🏻 I then followed this up with the banoffee bread and butter pudding. Sensational. Would highly recommend coming here for dinner. I hope to return soon.

Sunday lunch. The beef was melt in the mouth. The veggies however are what stops this being a 5 star review. All the veggies were under seasoned. I don’t as a habit add salt to my plate today I did. The cauliflower cheese was in parts so hard I struggled to get a knife through it. The roast potatoes had a look of those that are deep fried them finished in the oven. Again some were still a little hard not as soft and yielding in the middle as I prefer. Dessert we plumped for the posset and sticky toffee pudding. Both superb. The service was great and the atmosphere was warm and welcoming with a vibe that suits both young and the not so young. I will happily return we paid over £40 per head but that included wine and a healthy tip Tomorrow we are driving up to the sister pub The Stone Trough Inn @Kirkham Abbey

This place was a very pleasant surprise in York. We came for the meat, and stayed for the wine and gorgeous desert. Their wine selection is very good and we ended up drinking one of their recommendations which was a surprisingly smooth Colombinan “14 hands” red. We started with some pardon peppers and pigs’ cheek, followed with a ribeye and t-bone, with the meat cooked to perfection, and in between tried the Sicilian lemon and Aperol spritz sorbets (sweet and tasty). The final surprise was the Banoffee bread & butter pudding with ice cream, which was one of the best puddings I have ever tasted, with smild flavours of peanut, banana and raisins. Highly recommend

Came here again for date night. Always a go to place when thinking of where to go. This time really was the best dining experience I’ve had in York! Our server Alex was knowledgeable, funny and very attentive! I had the prime rib which he suggest cooked medium (usually I’m a rare man but followed his intuition) the best steak I’ve ever had! He also recommended the samurai Shiraz which was a bloody lovely drop! Thanks for having me again! Can’t wait for my next visit! And thanks to Alex! P.s nail varnish remover did work!

Totally delicious Sunday roast. Beef cooked to perfection. Huge Yorkshire puddings. Starters and desserts very good also. Great service too. My only minor feedback is food could have been a little warmer but that may be as the meat was rested. But I would highly recommend

Been back, again and again, no better place! For some reason this place is not on any list of recommendations, quietly hidden away of the beaten track. Been working and eating (!) for 3 months now in York, best meal so far lovely glass of Shiraz....then Focaccia... Followed by pan roast stonebass in berbere butter, creamed celeriac, charred cavolo nero, crispy mussels, and picked chili Had to be done finished off with Black Forest Tart..chocolate, cherries, Chantilly cream with Ximinez Sherry

Had so much fun. Unique place. Great food. Great hosts. Great wait staff. Really loved the casualness of the space but the attention paid to the meal. Couple next to us were a blast. Ended up moving the party to our hotel. Would highly recommend for no attitude great meal type dining.

By far, one of the best Sunday Lunches I've ever had, despite having to wait an hour for it, thankfully it was worth the wait. Thank you.

Really great find in York. We found this place by looking at the reviews and we're glad we did as its a bit tricky to find as its off the beaten track, down by the river front. Obviously very popular with locals though, looking for a great meal out. You definitely have to book (online is easy). Staff were very welcoming and super dog friendly. Dogs are allowed in the bar area (which is steeped in character). We had the steaks as our main meal and for my desert I had the cheese platter, which even came with its own menu. We really enjoyed our meal here and would definitely return.

went for sunday lunch at around 6/7pm however the menu had stopped being served at 4pm! the main menu was okay. caters for vegans which is always lovely. atmosphere was cosy, it was quiet but not empty. not as relaxing as expected for a pub but much better than staying home. vegan cous cous was a little oily. margaritas were great, well catered for as they were off menu.

Awful. Seated with my family inc x2 children at 5pm next to a 15 party of mixed couples absolutely off their faces. Aggressive and swearing, banging into chairs. Requested to be moved and it couldn’t be accommodated. Service was awful, waited 30 minutes for drinks to be taken. 45 mins until they arrived. Ruined our day.
