We are here at the moment for one night in room 9 above the beer garden as a birthday treat of my husband. We have called in a few times for a drink over the last few years as we absolutely love york. Room is just perfect, clean, tidy and so quirky and we love it, food was just divine, we had the steak and home made chips, just gorgeous. The service has been impeccable 💯 percent perfect and would like to say how wonderful all of the staff have been on a very busy Sunday. Looking forwards now to having a lovely relaxing evening in our lovely room with a brew and cake.

Awful. Seated with my family inc x2 children at 5pm next to a 15 party of mixed couples absolutely off their faces. Aggressive and swearing, banging into chairs. Requested to be moved and it couldn’t be accommodated. Service was awful, waited 30 minutes for drinks to be taken. 45 mins until they arrived. Ruined our day.

Long wait time for two glasses of wine. Waiter dropped one of the bread rolls for our prawn starter en route. Hugely overcooked steak and ale pie encrusted in rock solid pastry with molten hot insides. Lamb shoulder arrived as a single slice with semi-raw potatoes, very bland. Quality of food is certainly not reflected in the pricing. Clearly a gimmick played up to by Guy Fawkes’ birth in the inn. We complained to the staff, before being met by the kitchen manager who looked ready argue her menu to the death. She huffed and puffed our way through our very diplomatic answer as to why we didn’t want to pay £60+ before saying that they had sold numerous pies that day and that no one else had complained. She kept attempting to imply we wanted 50% off, though we never mentioned anything of the sort, as we merely mentioned over and over that the food didn’t match the pricing. Naturally we hoped she’d use her customer service skills to help find a happy medium as we were starting to feel a little cornered. Manager was very defensive and went on to ask why we didn’t send anything back, but the truth is we didn’t want to waste food, nor were we checked on by waiting staff. Our opinions felt unheard and invalid, as we were made to feel as if we were lying. Disappointing service on my 30th birthday meal and first visit to York.

We arrived in good time for our booking . We were booked in promptly and lead to our table and a drinks order again taken promptly. We placed our food order within 10 minutes of arrival. That is where promptness ends with the waitress coming back to check our order 40 minutes later, no apology and we had to ask why. The answer was they had not processed the order through properly so it had not got through to the kitchen. We asked how long now we would need to wait , we were told within 20 minutes. A table who placed an order which included pies which according to the menu take 30 minutes ,received their order while we were still waiting . One of the meals being something which was on our order. The waitress came to clean the table next to ours , still no update on our order so we advised we were cancellling as an hour had then passed. We paid for the drinks which at that point the waitress offered an apology, however it was too late. We left , our excitement of having a meal in such an historical establishment totally extinguished by the experience received.

Can't understand all the hype about this restuarant. Atmosphere was ok but food average and totally overpriced. Glad we took the cheapest options on the menu. I had a chicken tikka burger which was just a couple of bits of fried chicken on a bun with heaps of mayonnaise and a small amount of salad. Husband had the feta/celeriac burger which had the same on it. Both served with chips. Meal average. I had wondered about the fish pie but so glad I didn't. At £22 it was served in a small metal dish with what I took to be the most minute serving of peas on the side. I was embarrassed for the American couple who ordered it. Totally overpriced. Would certainly not eat here again.

Rather than let the risotto go cold, partner ‘continued’ with the pie - as we had a one hour slot to free up the table. Chips/fries were needed to be asked for. No mid meal enquiry from staff to enquire if food/everything was ‘okay’ / more drinks required. Poor service for such an expensive meal. Won’t return in a hurry.

The menu here is priced a little higher than comparable places, and I did not think the food was overly convincing. I've had a better meal at Eagle & Child up the road for example. In terms of the pub itself, its done out in traditional style but feels somewhat fake compared to the places on, say, High Petergate (any of which I would go to ahead of this one). Perhaps to an overseas visitor they won't detect that, but for me it lacked a bit of authenticity.

The Room had views of York minster next door which was delightful, located on the edge of the centre of York Guy Fawkes Inn is perfectly located, quiet at night and everywhere in walking/staggering distance, the decor is a nod to the buildings history and heritage and full of character with all the rooms named after a conspirator of the gun powder plot. We parked at monks bar car park and was quoted £88 for 2 days, which is extortionate price by York council, top tip is pay daily instead of all in one go we ended up paying £40 that way.

Clever decor which references Guy Fawkes without being twee, a supremely comfortable bed, a bar and restaurant full of atmosphere and friendly service throughout our stay all combined to make our mini break something very special indeed. The inn also links to a walking tour of York with the entertaining and encyclopedic Dave Hawes - which we joined on our first morning and which set our stay in York off to the best possible start.

We stayed for two nights at the Guy Fawkes Inn last week and we absolutely loved our stay, so much so that we're already looking at booking another trip in the future! We booked a deluxe double room and stayed in room 1, Thomas Percy. The room was clean and well looked after as well as being comfortable. The bed was quite squeaky so maybe bear this in mind if you're a light sleeper or move around a lot in the night but this wasn't a problem for us as we fell asleep straight away thanks to the comfy bed. The bathroom was very clean and well looked after as well. The only issue we did encounter is that the morning after our first night, our shower was only running cold water. However, after letting the staff member know this was dealt with promptly and she was very apologetic. These things happen and we only had to wait a little while before we had hot water again so I wouldn't want to mark them down for this especially because of the efficiency in which it was solved. The service we received during our stay was amazing with all the staff we met being so friendly and attentive. Our booking included breakfast as well and I genuinely haven't been able to stop thinking about the breakfast. It was absolutely amazing and the system they have in place works really well. You fill out what you'd like for breakfast the night before as well as the time, so that when you go down for breakfast there is no deciding what you want which also means you get to enjoy the delicious food a lot quicker! The portion size was really good as well so it kept me going until dinner. We also dined in their restaurant on our second night and it definitely lived up to the hype we had seen online! We both had the steak pie and I can definitely understand why they say it is their famous steak pie. It was delicious and we noticed the tables around us that had also had the pie were saying the same thing. The portion was really generous as well so although it may seem expensive, we felt it was definitely worth it. The staff were lovely and helpful as well and couldn't have been more attentive to our table which we really appreciate The location overall was amazing as well, it's right opposite York Minster so you're literally in the middle of everything. All of the places we visited were pretty much within 10 minutes walking distance so it was a prime place to stay. I would really recommend staying here if you're looking for a place to stay in York, and if not I'd definitely recommend eating here! We really enjoyed our stay and cannot thank the team enough for their warm welcome!

If you are planning to stay here, do not let them allocate you to either room 11 (Guy Fawkes) or room 12 (Robert Keyes), unless you like a lot of noise, that is. Both are ground floor rooms opening directly onto the courtyard at the rear where diners and drinkers and loud music will continue until around 11-30pm and, if you are unlucky like we were, staff will then carry on chatting and laughing loudly until about 1am. Arrived on a Friday tired from work, left Sunday afternoon even more tired. Relaxing it wasn't. Real shame because the staff were great, the place is lovely and you absolutely can't get a better location in the heart of the old town, right next to York Minster. Admittedly it's the first time I'd spent as much as £22 on a roast dinner in a pub, but for that price I'd kind of assumed that the best bit might not be the mound of inedible rubbery fat and gristle that I'd painstakingly removed and left on the side of the plate to go in the bin. 1 small carrot on a pile of green beans seemed a bit basic for the veg too at that price.

We visited on Monday 29th January at 4.15pm for a meal after being recommended by a friend, the previous day we had had a look at the menu displayed at the front entrance advertising a 2 course menu for £22 if you dined before 5pm. On entering the restaurant we got welcomed by lovely smartly dressed staff that showed us to a table, we were the only customers in the restaurant apart from a casually dressed woman working on a laptop at a table. When the menu was presented to us it didn’t show the 2 course set menu so I enquired with the waitress and she told me that was an old offer from last year! I explained we had seen it on entering the restaurant and that’s why we had decided to eat there on that day and time. She apologised and said it shouldn’t be displayed at the entrance anymore. She then went to tell the lady working on the laptop that “ we really need to get that menu changed at the front entrance “ to which the laptop women replied “yes yes we are working on a new one” We both ordered the steak pie that was absolutely delicious and all the waiting staff we had contact with were friendly well presented and professional at all times. During the hour we sat in the restaurant the woman on the laptop wearing scruffy high top trainers and a striped t. Shirt dress proceeded to use the restaurant as a staff room speaking to 3 different members of staff about working practices within the establishment. She did not acknowledge our presence at all, I can only presume she was a member of staff maybe even a supervisor? The whole ambiance of the place and our dining experience was ruined by the presence of this woman, I’m sure an office or staff room would be more conducive to carry out staff issues etc? On leaving the Guy Fawkes Inn the out of date menu was still displayed at the entrance! With the importance of her work needing to be done in such a public area she couldn’t manage to either remove the out of date menu or ask a member of staff to do so or apologise to us the customer or just honer the false advertising? This one member of staff is letting the other members of staff down.

Overcooked dry roast beef, roast potatoes that had been kept alive for hours, beans virtually inedible, gravy thin and under-seasoned. Had to ask for horseradish sauce and mustard, then it never came so had to go off and find it. Miserable experience, so disappointing. Shouldn’t have such a high rating on this App, it’s a very low-average Sunday roast for £22, what a waste of money.

We came here for lunch after visiting Yorkminster. It's a short walk. We loved the lovely atmosphere and the historic aspect of being Guy Fawkes' birthplace. Excellent soup and sandwiches for lunch, with drinks. Great service and a thoroughly enjoyable lunch.

As an amateur student of history I loved that this place was Guy Fawkes' birthplace. The pub makes use of that fact without overblowing it. The ambience is rich and fascinating, the service excellent: smiles, fast beers coming quickly, and one of the most delicious...

Very disappointing visit to what we thought was going to be a quality pub grub experience. The pub is atmospheric but the food and service was lacklustre and definitely not value for money. Our starters were pleasant enough but it all went downhill when we...

Unfortunately this premises must have changed hands in the last year, very , very unfortunately as it had been excellent. The food was very ordinary & as such overpriced. The beer was badly pulled, 'flat' in Yorkshire. Disappointing overall. Another case of buying a premises...

Went here for something to eat after visiting the Minster. Would never go here again. Ordered a prawn sandwich with chips. Meal was not great. Ended up leaving most of the sandwich. Could do a lot better.

Booked and attended for Sunday lunch. Croquettes to start, then 1 beef and 1 chicken main plus cauliflower cheese. The food was excellent, really good quality and generous portions at a reasonable price. Staff were very good and all very attentive. Highly recommend

It was a good pie. I’ve had better. And when you have to wait 30 minutes for it you expect a lot more. It was good but not worth £19.95.
