We stayed in Room 12 in the courtyard, the first night was horrendous people were stood in our doorway talking and shouting loudly not a great start to a supposedly relaxing break. Paying approx £360 for 2 nights we were very disappointed. I even looked at other hotels to try to find somewhere else to stay it was that bad. We tried putting on the TV but it wasn't working properly so we couldn't even try to drown out the noise from outside. Room was a little tired and bathroom floor had broken tiles which were quite sharp definitely not 4 stars. Food in the restaurant was good we both had the pie which was delicious. Location was excellent just shame about the room we had . Your probably best to stay in the main building and definitely avoid room 12 at all costs.

We didn’t stay at Guy Fawkes Inn, however we did dine there. Firstly, the staff were really polite, but they were rushed off their feet. They tried to take our order within a minute of us sitting down at our table, so we asked for a couple more minutes to choose. Unfortunately we didn’t see another member of staff for around 20 minutes. In the end my wife took it upon herself to find someone. The food was ok, but in my opinion - a little overpriced. I really don’t mind paying premium prices for quality, however the food here is not ‘premium quality’. Nevertheless it was still a fairly enjoyable meal.

When we arrived we thought it was nice and rustic which was what we wanted. We had been put in the garden room which due to the music and beer garden was extremely noisy. We had been given a breakfast menu for the morning, which we didn’t mind but would have been nice to have a pen to fill it in with. Coffee in the room but no milk provided! No remote for the television. Our complaint to the staff on duty couldn’t have been met with less interest. Eventually we were moved to another room at the front. Very noisy from the street noise, ok they can’t help help that so can’t complain at that. But! Every time someone walked on the floor above the chandelier in the room rattled. All! Night. If it’s disinterested staff and no sleep you want then this is the place for you.

On a positive note the bed was very comfortable. The garden room not suitable for couples who want a quiet stay due to noise from the beer garden. No fresh milk or water in the room which would be expected of a 4 star hotel. The bathroom needs updating with a new radiator and hooks need to be provided to hang towels. The breakfast was adequate.

Guy Fawkes Inn is an authentic experience! The room was clean and neat, and the historic charm with crooked floors and exciting nooks and crannies gives the place a very special atmosphere. It is incredibly practical with a short distance from the pub to the bed on the floor above 🙂. The service was good, and the atmosphere was just as pleasant as one could hope for. Highly recommended!

A nice old pub, however disappointing for the price. Location is the best, right opposite the minster and close to most attractions. We found the bed in our room was pretty saggy and not really what you would expect for the price. Other room amenities were good. Breakfast was quite good. It’s almost like it’s a different kitchen crew to the rest of their food. Food quality for dinner and lunches was just not good overall. We went and ate at a different pub for our second night as after the previous nights dinner and then bland sandwiches for lunch we couldn’t stomach any more. We found that the other pub was a fraction of the price and much better quality food!

Absolutely stunning and charming Hotel/Inn/Bar/Restaurant, right in the heart of the Minster quarter of York. The whole place gives off a Stuart-era vibe, in keeping with the idea of it being Guy Fawkes' birthplace. There is barely a flat or straight surface in the entire building, which gives the whole place a wonderful charm. Despite all the natural charm and history, they've done a great job with the modern touches - our room was well equipped and incredibly warm (it was -5 outside!), with a view over the Minster - and the breakfast in the morning was absolutely fantastic and as hot as if everything had just come out of the oven and onto our plates

My husband and I decided to splash out and treat ourselves to a night away in York whilst visiting the Christmas market. We paid £269 for a four poster double room at the Guy Fawkes Inn (including breakfast). On checking in our first disappointment was the view from the room. On the website it describes ‘an unrivalled view of York Minster’. Well, the view from our windows were just of white tarpaulin. Whilst I appreciate the Inn can’t control work being done on the building opposite, this should have been highlighted to us either before booking or before our stay. Part of the reason for choosing the room was because of the described views. Not only that but the room was considerably smaller than that shown on the website. There certainly wasn’t room for a sofa at the end of our bed! We also hardly slept a wink. The noise from the bar below was very disrupting. Whilst I appreciate it is a room in a pub, there were people shouting for over an hour. Then when the pub closed the staff were loudly clearing up, hoovering etc. When that noise had finished at around 11.30pm, the people in the room upstairs came back at 12pm and we could hear everything. Their footsteps were very loud on our ceiling, we could hear them talking and then they put the television on until after 1am. Furthermore, there is something that rattles in the room which kept waking us up (we think this was the mirror on top of the chest of drawers) and the window doesn’t close properly so all of the noise from the street is extremely loud (photo attached). So, overall, what was supposed to be a relaxing night away was an awful experience. We were expecting a lovely room where we could rest but this is far from it. Definitely not worth the money paid.

What a mistake I had fish butty ,my friend opted for the chargrilled chicken option ,both sandwiches were appalling mine was 2 greasy fish goujons sliced between 2 tiny slices of what I can only describe of what tasted like part baked doughy inedible bread my friends was even worse a slither of lettuce and barely any chicken in sight at almost £12 each this is unacceptable we also went for a portion of what was described as proper chips ,there was nothing proper about them they were pale insipid cheap frozen ones ,all together with a bottle of wine the bill was just under £57 ,none of us like to complain but when the waiter asked if it was all OK, we aired our disappointment, he said he would speak to the manager, but nobody came over ,so we just left £57 out of pocket with empty stomachs and feeling a tad robbed by guy fawkes

Big disappointment when our lunch order arrived. One sandwich was battered fish, and one was herb chicken. The two pieces of bread was dry with hard crusts, the chicken pieces were minute on the smallest piece of little gem lettuce with a Caesar dressing. The fish was unexeptional also on hard dry bread. The side dressing with each was a spoonful of wet oily rocket and grated carrot. We also ordered "proper chips". These were frozen. I'm sorry but for a central pub restaurant in York, charging £12 per sandwich and £5.50 for the chips they could have done much better. We also had a nice bottle of Pinot Grigio at £27.00. In total we spent £57.00. I am seriously not impressed. The staff were very nice and the pub has a good atmosphere. What a shame their food lets them down.

Tend to go once or twice a year, the last four years booking a table - some months ahead - for second week of December and asking for one of the two tables tucked in the back of the building by the window overlooking the rear courtyard. Always worked well. Did the same for yesterday but things went off the rails due to bad luck and a bit of staff stubborn jobsworthiness for good measure. Arrived a little early, our preferred/booked table wasn't available but one close by was. OK, we've arrived early, beggars can't be choosers, we'll take the other table. But then it swiftly transpired we were next to a table of about nine loud drunk male pensioners all shouting over each other and not really caring if the whole pub could hear. Unpleasant. Could barely talk amongst ourselves on our table. We were there in the restaurant to eat. Looked they were there just to drink. But then, ta da! The table we thought we booked became free, which would have been just that little bit shielded and more distant from the OAP yobs, but the staff wouldn't let us move saying the other table had a reservation on it. Yeah, ours probably! Could we not swop from the four seater table we were on to the four seater one that we reserved about three months ago and was now free ... then whoever else comes along later could have where we were sat? No. OK mate, tell you what, screw you then ... went to ASK restaurant round the corner instead. Spoilt the day out and left a sour impression of the place.

Long wait time for two glasses of wine. Waiter dropped one of the bread rolls for our prawn starter en route. Hugely overcooked steak and ale pie encrusted in rock solid pastry with molten hot insides. Lamb shoulder arrived as a single slice with semi-raw potatoes, very bland. Quality of food is certainly not reflected in the pricing. Clearly a gimmick played up to by Guy Fawkes’ birth in the inn. We complained to the staff, before being met by the kitchen manager who looked ready argue her menu to the death. She huffed and puffed our way through our very diplomatic answer as to why we didn’t want to pay £60+ before saying that they had sold numerous pies that day and that no one else had complained. She kept attempting to imply we wanted 50% off, though we never mentioned anything of the sort, as we merely mentioned over and over that the food didn’t match the pricing. Naturally we hoped she’d use her customer service skills to help find a happy medium as we were starting to feel a little cornered. Manager was very defensive and went on to ask why we didn’t send anything back, but the truth is we didn’t want to waste food, nor were we checked on by waiting staff. Our opinions felt unheard and invalid, as we were made to feel as if we were lying. Disappointing service on my 30th birthday meal and first visit to York.

We arrived in good time for our booking . We were booked in promptly and lead to our table and a drinks order again taken promptly. We placed our food order within 10 minutes of arrival. That is where promptness ends with the waitress coming back to check our order 40 minutes later, no apology and we had to ask why. The answer was they had not processed the order through properly so it had not got through to the kitchen. We asked how long now we would need to wait , we were told within 20 minutes. A table who placed an order which included pies which according to the menu take 30 minutes ,received their order while we were still waiting . One of the meals being something which was on our order. The waitress came to clean the table next to ours , still no update on our order so we advised we were cancellling as an hour had then passed. We paid for the drinks which at that point the waitress offered an apology, however it was too late. We left , our excitement of having a meal in such an historical establishment totally extinguished by the experience received.

I had a chicken tikka burger which was just a couple of bits of fried chicken on a bun with heaps of mayonnaise and a small amount of salad. Husband had the feta/celeriac burger which had the same on it. Both served with chips. Meal average. I had wondered about the fish pie but so glad I didn't. At £22 it was served in a small metal dish with what I took to be the most minute serving of peas on the side. I was embarrassed for the American couple who ordered it. Totally overpriced. The menu here is priced a little higher than comparable places, and I did not think the food was overly convincing. I've had a better meal at Eagle & Child up the road for example. In terms of the pub itself, its done out in traditional style but feels somewhat fake compared to the places on, say, High Petergate (any of which I would go to ahead of this one). Perhaps to an overseas visitor they won't detect that, but for me it lacked a bit of authenticity.

We parked at monks bar car park and was quoted £88 for 2 days, which is extortionate price by York council, top tip is pay daily instead of all in one go we ended up paying £40 that way.

It's an ancient building so don't expect all the mod cons. Wonky floors, staircases etc. but it's immaculate. Couldn't be better positioned. View from the room is stunning. Staff are all super, food and drinks are all very good. Would definitely come back.

The shower in our room was cold and wouldn’t turn up in the evening, but was warm in the morning.🤷‍♂️ slight noisy in evenings from the courtyard. Room 12.

Location, history and ambience are all five star in this quirky wonder of an inn - and it also served up the best food we had in our four days in York. Clever decor which references Guy Fawkes without being twee, a supremely comfortable bed, a bar and restaurant full of atmosphere and friendly service throughout our stay all combined to make our mini break something very special indeed. The inn also links to a walking tour of York with the entertaining and encyclopedic Dave Hawes - which we joined on our first morning and which set our stay in York off to the best possible start.

Great location and friendly, helpful staff but the rooms need a major update as in our room there were cracked tiles, ill fitting toilet seat and it felt worn out in every way. Also was very noisy after about 5.30am with constant footsteps from above so more sound proofing would be helpful.

Went in for a drink, very fishy smell om entering the building. Had to wait to be served even though no one else was waiting at the bar. Barman poured one drink, noticed a problem with the glass and just tipped it straight into another, resulting in large head on it, my wife then had to wait for it to settle, no offer of a top up, i had found a seat and she said she didn't like to ask. Nearly £14 for 2 pints of lager. Won't t be back in a hurry. No atmosphere, it was like a library with people just sitting in silence. Shame as we had been loking forward to going because of the history.

We stayed for two nights at the Guy Fawkes Inn last week and we absolutely loved our stay, so much so that we're already looking at booking another trip in the future! We booked a deluxe double room and stayed in room 1, Thomas Percy. The room was clean and well looked after as well as being comfortable. The bed was quite squeaky so maybe bear this in mind if you're a light sleeper or move around a lot in the night but this wasn't a problem for us as we fell asleep straight away thanks to the comfy bed. The bathroom was very clean and well looked after as well. The only issue we did encounter is that the morning after our first night, our shower was only running cold water. However, after letting the staff member know this was dealt with promptly and she was very apologetic. These things happen and we only had to wait a little while before we had hot water again so I wouldn't want to mark them down for this especially because of the efficiency in which it was solved. The service we received during our stay was amazing with all the staff we met being so friendly and attentive. Our booking included breakfast as well and I genuinely haven't been able to stop thinking about the breakfast. It was absolutely amazing and the system they have in place works really well. You fill out what you'd like for breakfast the night before as well as the time, so that when you go down for breakfast there is no deciding what you want which also means you get to enjoy the delicious food a lot quicker! The portion size was really good as well so it kept me going until dinner. We also dined in their restaurant on our second night and it definitely lived up to the hype we had seen online! We both had the steak pie and I can definitely understand why they say it is their famous steak pie. It was delicious and we noticed the tables around us that had also had the pie were saying the same thing. The portion was really generous as well so although it may seem expensive, we felt it was definitely worth it. The staff were lovely and helpful as well and couldn't have been more attentive to our table which we really appreciate The location overall was amazing as well, it's right opposite York Minster so you're literally in the middle of everything. All of the places we visited were pretty much within 10 minutes walking distance so it was a prime place to stay. I would really recommend staying here if you're looking for a place to stay in York, and if not I'd definitely recommend eating here! We really enjoyed our stay and cannot thank the team enough for their warm welcome!

If you are planning to stay here, do not let them allocate you to either room 11 (Guy Fawkes) or room 12 (Robert Keyes), unless you like a lot of noise, that is. Both are ground floor rooms opening directly onto the courtyard at the rear where diners and drinkers and loud music will continue until around 11-30pm and, if you are unlucky like we were, staff will then carry on chatting and laughing loudly until about 1am. Arrived on a Friday tired from work, left Sunday afternoon even more tired. Relaxing it wasn't. Real shame because the staff were great, the place is lovely and you absolutely can't get a better location in the heart of the old town, right next to York Minster. I would stay again but definitely not in either of those rooms: be warned!

One of my favourite pubs in York. Is not a cheap choice but the courtyard is lovely and heaters/blankets are available. Proper lovely pub, nice drink selection, menu and location is incomparable. Staff are always lovely and professional.

Went for Sunday roast dinner. When the server asked us how it was? I pointed at the pile of fat that I'd removed from the beef, to which she replied "That's the best bit". Admittedly it's the first time I'd spent as much as £22 on a roast dinner in a pub, but for that price I'd kind of assumed that the best bit might not be the mound of inedible rubbery fat and gristle that I'd painstakingly removed and left on the side of the plate to go in the bin. 1 small carrot on a pile of green beans seemed a bit basic for the veg too at that price.

I really enjoyed my stay at the Guy Fawkes Inn. I love the decor and the atmosphere. The room I had reserved exceeded my expectations and made my weekend extra special. Being right beside the York Minster also makes it an ideal location. The staff were all super nice and helpful as well. Would definitely stay there again if I go back to York and can highly recommend to others.

We had a family lunch in the restaurant and it was fantastic. The staff were freindly and very helpful (we were a group of 10). The food was melt in your mouth delicious and all 10 of us loved what we had. Would highly recommend , but book ahead - it was busy. Location is right next to York Minster, ideal place to stop for lunch on our tour of the city.

If I lived nearer I'd celebrate Guy Fawkes much, much more regularly. The ales exploded my taste beer buds like a rocket, fireworks going off left, right and centre. This pub is a banger. Just needed to meet someone in there called Catherine Wheel to make my day complete.

We enjoyed a delicious pub lunch in this lovely historic building. Food plus a drink for £12 each was excellent value. Crispy bacon in the BLT sandwich, really nice sausage and mash. Great skin on chips too! Pint of ale, glass of wine. Prompt and friendly service too.
