Very disappointing to see reserved on most tables which were not going to be used till much later, should have a time on them stating when they are reserved from as some people left after thinking there were no seats available.

Great beer and choice - Clearly well looked after as the draught is rich and smooth whilst larger chilled and lively. Speckled Hen is a favourite but Coors Light very clean and pure tasting. Slightly squeaky bar stools but nothing a quick service won't solve. Not had any food but fish Friday always smells amazing and looks good size portion too. Update: no speckled hen any more, sadly, but Rev James stands proud, Coors is still very much worth the purchase and a great draught beer. No more squeaky stools, some lovely upgrades and great atmosphere.

Good service, friendly staff. Veggie option limited to two choices. I went with the pasta which was very average and arrived lukewarm but was soon heated up with an apology. Other members of the party had fish and chips, which they enjoyed and one had pie which was nice but the veg was cold until smothered in gravy. Nice evening but wouldn't hurry back as a veggie.

Went in for a pint with my baby in a pushchaur and dog on a lead. Dog was only allowed on the wooden floor, which only left two tables. One was a normal height table and one was a tall stool type table. I asked where I could sit with the baby (she needed feeding). They bar lady said the tall table as the lower table was reserved (it was 1500 and i was the only person in the pub). I said it wasn't really very convenient, but went over to have a look. Got to the table and the baby started crying so I just grabbed a stool and sat between the two tables in some ridiculous effort to show I wasn't ignoring them, but that I could sit at the higher one. As a song ended and it went quiet the delightful landlady said "I'd have told him to f4ck off, baby or not". When I asked her to repeat what she said she scuttled off and left the other rude barmaid to answer me. Her response, when I asked if she told all of her customers was "that wasn't me. But we do if they have repeatedly done something we have told them not to do". Strange hospitality. Think these two would be better running a 19th century workhouse. They certainly have the lack of compassion required. Other than that the pub is tired and dead. Been once before and I was the only customer, but thought I had the best shot of a stop-off with the dog here today. Regret my decision. I left after two sips of beer and will not return. I expect an aggressive response to this review, rather than the apology they should offer, even though every word in it is true. Thanks for a horrible experience.

Old fashioned local pub in the High Street, but friendly Enough on our first visit. The menu is pretty regular pub grub fare - a pie, fish and chips, gammon, burgers. Most of the mains are around £8 which is pretty good value. We had the pie - packed with meat and pastry top and bottom - a proper pie (not like the stew-with-a-lid that you get at so many pubs!). Cottage pie was smothered in cheese and creamy potatoes. Maybe would have liked a bit more meat and a bit less potato but for the price it was hot and tasty and filling. No complaints at all. Friendly service from the young lady who served the food too. Will return.

We tried to have a beer there yesterday night, but after asking me to write my name for the track and trace (apparently the QR code to scan is too much to print out) and see a foreigner name, suddenly they decided to stop pouring my beers and to ask for an ID. When my partner show them his ID they asked for his nationality and then they pretended the passport. All of it without telling us what they needed it for, but we did not care: arguing with racists that dislike money was not our goal for the night.

We live locally, but, as often happens, had not used the local pubs for a while, as we usually eat out as part of a trip out of area. We only had time to eat locally on Sunday, so booked a table at the Lion. The pub was fairly quiet when we arrived, but filled up steadily after that. We were greeted pleasantly, and our reserved table was pointed out to us. Drinks order came promptly, and our meals quickly after. Portions were pretty generous, with several vegetables plus meat.We had both chosen lamb, which was tender, but looked like pre-sliced portions, rather than off the joint. It tasted fine, however. Yorkshire pudding was a bit well done for our taste, and the cauli in particular was very firm, but I realise these things are a matter of personal taste. Neither of us could manage a dessert, so cannot comment. Service was quick and pleasant, and our bill very reasonable indeed.

The staff were friendly and attentive but not intrusive. We had a very pleasant evening with a few pints and good good and will be visiting again.

We were told there was no chicken and no fish available. We ordered our food, my husband ordered the veg lasagne and I ordered the meat lasagne. While the food was been prepared we heard the microwave pinging several times. When the food arrived it looked ok (it looked homemade), it may have been made previously and then warmed up for us. The food tasted ok. It wasn’t the best food I’ve ever had and it wasn’t the worse I’ve had.

Finally!! An absolutely fabulous, traditional pub that has excellent customer service and excellent tasty food.Visited the red lion during a fairly busy period where the young bar maid was keeping up the demand for service with ease. Had to wait a few minutes to be served our drinks but that really isn't an issue in a pub that is busy, especially when the bar maid acknowledges she knows you are waiting with a big smile. Think her name was teeka or maybe Tina, overheard another member of staff speaking to her! First pub in Haxby to offer us lemon and ice in our drinks, may seem petty for this to please us but it really is a basic that all pubs should be offering without having to be asked for it. This pub also uses fresh lemons and limes, great to see in the age of these things usually coming from a jar nowadays.Husband ordered the jumbo cod and chips and I got the 10oz rump steak (med rare). To say the pub was fairly busy with diners and drinkers we were served our meals pretty quickly and boy were they good. My husbands fish was more like a whale and was served with plenty of freshly cooked hand cut chips, mushy peas and bread and butter. 100%, absolutely, stake my life on it, this fish was fresh and freshly battered to order. My steak was cooked to perfection and came with all the trimmings you would expect. Loved it!As we ate there were other meals going out all around us which due to nosiness we can also say looked gorgeous and home cooked. Steak pies, burgers, what we discovered was chicken New York and quiches. Also looked and confirmed to be home made (confirmed by our lovely waitress Ollie). When hubby went to pay we thought perhaps they had a mistake with our bill and not charged us for something. We also had desserts, a lovely chocolate brownie shared. We were pretty full after our mains but couldn't resist. There was no mistake however and so we can add that not only is the red lion serving great food but also at excellent value for money.Would highly recommend and will DEFINATELY be back. Oh and dogs are welcome in the beer garden :-)

My family and I (5 people) went to the Red lion as we heard good reviews about the pub as a hole. We went at around 2:30 o'clock last week and got seats after a little wait however it is to be accepted for such a lively pub. We ordered the house wine which only cost £6 and my three kids had fruit shoots. After sitting down we order the two large Sunday dinners for my Wife and which included a large bit of pork and ham, Yorkshire puddings, stuffing, roast potatoes mash and lots of different veg. My oldest had the the chilli burger that was well coked and not to spicy and my two youngest has the kids honey sausage and mash which tasted amazing. The portion sizes where very large and no one left hungry and the meal come with plenty of extra like horse radish, gravy and ketchup. The staff where very friendly. The smaller young bar made was very friendly and the young girl and young boy who was waitressing where very friendly and caring. Nothing was a big job as our child kept dropping cutlery the staff was happy to get more. I would recommend this pub to anyone that come to the area. This is pub is very family friendly and family run. It services prober pub food and prober chips. It's nice to a prober pub that is doing well. I can't wait to try more food on the menu.

Great for Sunday lunch - all home cooked food with lovely Yorkshire puddings all the trimmings and lashings of gravy. Much better value and quality than the other pubs in Haxby and Wigginton serve (in my opinion). The house burgers are fantastic also - as is the home made steak pie.And the best thing - the Home Made Chips - Absolutely brilliant.Been round the other pubs in the village but this is will always be my local for eating. The beer is always well kept and the drinks are also reasonably priced.

After a 3 hour walk on Strensall Common, looked for a local pub serving food and found this...Looks lovely outside, beer garden where dogs are welcome, inside can only be described as a pub. Not a problem for us and it was spotlessly clean...Kids meals were huge and tasty, none left by our two. Gammon and rump steak for the adults, cooked to order and great quality at very reasonable prices(wish I'd seen the house wine at £6 a bottle earlier), good selection of beers on tap...Personally I couldn't fault it, not fancy, but that doesn't bother me when the food is this good!Bar staff/serving staff - family affair and it showed...very friendly and attentive, made a fuss of the kids too - home made brownies with cream and ice cream were delivered with 'Good luck', 4 of us couldn't manage 2 servings...!Give it a try, we enjoyed it!

Went for lunch after a business event, we both had fish & chips not bad, but not great. a busy little pub which smelt of cooking fat, as the door to the kitchen was in easy access. Beer was well kept, it's a proper locals pub. Loads more pubs in the village and surrounding areas. Including the ship in strensall which I was told by one of the locals is the best pub for food in the area.

Stopped there for dinner yesterday, very nice staff and good food. Small traditional pub which means it wasn t too noisy and we really enjoyed our visit. Our cider was fruity and excellent.
