Stepping into The Fox & Roman in Dringhouses, York, feels like coming home. With its warm, inviting atmosphere and beautifully considered décor, this pub strikes the perfect balance between comfort and character. It’s the kind of place where you instantly feel at ease, whether you’re stopping in for a casual drink or settling in for a hearty meal. The food is everything you could hope for from a great pub—delicious, satisfying, and full of flavor. This isn’t fine dining; it’s proper pub food done right. Generous portions, high-quality ingredients, and expertly cooked classics make every meal a treat. Whether it’s a perfectly crisp fish and chips, a rich and comforting pie, or a Sunday roast that feels like it’s been made just for you, every dish hits the spot. The drink selection is just as impressive, with a fantastic range of ales, wines, and spirits to complement any meal or simply enjoy by the fire. What truly sets The Fox & Roman apart, however, is the outstanding service. The entire team is friendly, welcoming, and attentive, but special mention must go to Georgie. She is the heartbeat of the place—endlessly kind, professional, and engaging, with a wonderful sense of humour that makes every visit a pleasure. She goes above and beyond to ensure guests have the best experience possible, making each visit feel like a return to a home away from home. If you’re looking for a proper pub with fantastic food, a warm atmosphere, and top-tier service, The Fox & Roman is an absolute must-visit. Five stars all the way!

What a lovely restaurant! All the staff were very friendly and efficient, the service was fantastic, the food and drinks were delicious, and the interior is so lovely, cosy warm and incredibly well kept and clean. It is only slightly more expensive than other pubs/restaurants in the area, and for us this was definitely worth it. We will be back the next time we’re in York and recommending to others who visit!

after looking at the menu online, i chose this pub for a meal. because it was more on the expensive side, i was expecting really high quality food but was unfortunately quite disappointed, especially for the price! we had the signature burger and the chicken burger. the meat in the chicken burger was such poor quality, tasted very highly processed and like it had just come out of the freezer (which i suspect it had done). we were also waiting for more than 40 minutes for our food after ordering, and the pub was not very busy. we did however really enjoy the chips, the waiter was lovely, there was sufficient parking, and the pub had a very nice interior.

We came for Sunday lunch as somewhere different to the chain carvery at the other side of the city but we definitely made the wrong choice. As it is considerably more expensive, I expected the meal to be superior. The meat was (on the most part) dry, parsnips I couldn’t cut through and the crackling was so hard I might as well have had a plastic ruler on the plate. Minimum amounts of gravy as well. Yorkshire pudding was tasty and there was plenty of green veg. Won’t return again for Sunday lunch.

Roasts were nice. Skewers and very expensive £30 steak dreadful. 5 very over cooked, dry and crap prawns on the skewer. Steak full of gristle and had to be chewed for ages… my Dad spat a huge mouthful out and left it in the end after 3 mouthfuls as it was really poor meat.

We were staying at the Holiday Inn opposite and decided to come here for our evening meal as my mum can’t walk very far. From the moment we arrived to the moment we left we had a lovely waitress called Sophie, who couldn’t do enough for us. Our food was all very delicious and the prices were very reasonable for both main meals and my dessert. I loved seeing the Roman relics here but I feel it could do with a little light on in the glass cabinet as it was a difficult to read the information. I highly recommend coming here and downloading the Vintage Inns app as I was treated to £10 off my main meal and also you get a loyalty card to use for future use.

Came here for a meal before our daughter returned to university. Whilst the company and conversation was lovely, sad to say, the food was not. It is our local but it’s also part of a pub chain so you shouldn’t expect much…but even so… Very poor starters, garlic mushrooms on toast were both gelatinous and “stalky” at the same time - a remarkable achievement. I’d only had a light lunch, so hoped to fill up on a “double up” on the house skewers of king prawns and also halloumi & peppers. The halloumi, peppers and onions were all undercooked to the point of being raw, the half dozen prawns that turned up on a foot long skewer (despite not being signposted as such) turned up “full shell on”making it ridiculously admin heavy. When they were eventually shucked there was clear evidence of a dirty intestinal tract in the carcasses. Safe to say I erred on the side of caution and left them. On the plus side our son enjoyed his rib eye and our daughter enjoyed her pizza., the service was also friendly and helpful, but offered no alternative when I pointed out the shortcomings of some of the dishes. My partner was equally as unimpressed I was with their prawn skewer. Verdict would be - visit for a pleasant drink and a bag of crisps but definitely go elsewhere for any type of meal - not cheap and cheerful either, for a basic pub meal - 3 starters, 4 mains and 4 drinks c£145. Avoid.

We had a very warm and friendly welcome and were shown to a table in the dining room near the fire as we had requested. Menus were already on the table and he took our drinks order which he brought back fairly quickly. It took some time for a waitress to come and take our food order and we were not told what the soup or pie of the day was. I over heard another waiter telling an adjacent table of diners so we found out that way. Once we had placed our food order there was a reasonable wait for our food. The portions were very generous, looked appetising and presented nicely. Food was hot, tasty and we thoroughly enjoyed our meals. The waitress did come and check during the meal to make sure everything was ok with our food. We decided not to have a dessert and our bill was brought promptly and paid. We would definitely return especially for the 50% off main courses during January.

My wife and I had a meal at the Fox and Roman. My wife had the beef rib bourguignon and I had the Moroccan spiced chicken breast skewer. We were very disappointed with the size of both portions particularly the beef which was no bigger than the size of a beer mat. It was also rather fatty. The portion of vegetables was also a lot less than we expected. For £24.95 and £18.50 respectively I have had far better meals for a lot less money elsewhere.

We went to this establishment on 25/11/24 at18.15. We went in as a family of 5 and were shown to out table and asked if we wanted drinks and we did. Vintage inns had a black Friday deal where you could get 40% off main meals, which was a bonus but not totally the main reason as we DID use Vintage inns quite regularly. We then waited 20 minutes for an assistant to ask what we would like to eat. We said 4 fillet steaks and a kids beef burger, only to be told there were NO steaks of any kind. We then decided we would have gammon..NO gammon. at this stage we said we will have a starter of calamari while we decided...NO calamari . At this point we had finished our first round of drinks and asked what they DID have, which was pizza, pork bellies and a Thai curry. To cut an already long story short.... food came (after 1 hour 30 mins and again asking for the manager, and having to get another round of drinks). pizzas dry as a bone came. pork bellie (the most tender part was the crackling) and a just passable Thai curry. We complained to the duty manager who agreed to not charge for the inedible meals but would for drinks and barely passable curry (unbelievable). DO NOT USE THIS PUB. I have since complained to headquarters in Birmingham and after three complaints, Manager of pub. Manager of pub again who offered us £30 for the inconvenience (not accepted, would not even buy us a starter each) and then to the area manager WHO HAS NOT HAD THE DECENCY TO GET IN TOUCH AFTER 5 DAYS. As of 17.59 on 16/12/24 i will be taking this to a higher level as a matter of priceable and will encourage ALL of my friends and colleges, ( who are numerous, due to the company i work for) NEVER to use Vintage inns again. This is a shortened version, i could go on about other people leaving and also leaving their drinks because no one was at the door stating they had no food but waited till you had paid for a round of drink. Absolutely disgraceful

The landlord has the most extraordinary pair of jeans. Bright blue with gold stars sewn on and a silver stripe down the side. He always makes sure he’s working on a Friday night so he can show all of the ladies and gentleman. People sing about him in a song they call “Pantalon John”, and slap his perky arse. If the pub makes £1500 on a Friday night, Pantalon John will drive his Range Rover with as many of his adoring public packed in as possible, with a trailer full on the back to boot, to a lovely spot on the Tanner Row in York called “Flares”. First shots on him but you must buy him one back. He loves a chance to show off his trousers in York, once Englands capital, but I digress. This night is Pantalon Johns and no one can stop him. After Flares shuts he likes to get one of the battered sausages from Millers chip shop he keeps in the glove compartment to snack on while he drops his fans off at there homes (yes he’s had a couple of drinks, no we don’t care wokey). But there’s always a last passenger. And that special person gets their own battered sausage, and they just sit and hold each other at the Haxby and Wiggington Cemetary for hours. The sausage is gone, but the sweet kisses linger on the lip. I wonder who’s go it’ll be next week, if the right money come in? All the best!
