We called in The Hinchliffe Arms for something to eat after a walk around the nearby dam and reservoir. It's a very nice and warm welcoming pub in a nice setting, with friendly staff. We both had the beef and onion pie with chips and mushy peas. It was ok, but we had to wait 40 minutes for it. We'd happily eat here again but would probably choose something quicker to cook.

I dont write reviews very often but the positive comments elsewhere on this page bear no relationship to the awful meal we had. Perhaps there has been a change of cook or they have lost interest in customers but either way a bad situation for a Friday evening. No point going through all the problems but one meal will suffice: a steak and kidney pie which was small and microwaved - microwaved?? - so the puff pastry was soggy and slimy, a tiny ramekin of "mushy peas" which managed to be yellow, hard and watery [inedible - at the very least just open a tin of Bachelors for heavens sake], and a small handful of chips which had clearly been reheated. Shockingly bad and we were embarrassed to have brought our daughter there. In 2023 this kind of cooking is completely unacceptable. Avoid.

My partner and I have been twice now, the first time with my parents, and it has been a delightful discovery! The staff are so friendly, the food has been delicious and the atmosphere is so cozy! They had decorated it for Halloween the first time we went and we loved all of the decorations (i wasnt expecting the fake blood writing on the men's bathroom mirror. Loved it!) They're dog friendly too, and the staff seem to love dogs so by all means bring your dogs too! Just an FYI if you plan to visit, it's tucked out of the way of the main road and the road to it is quite tight so be careful when getting to it but definitely well worth a visit!

Cosy pub in beautiful surroundings. Really tasty roast dinner and good vegetarian options. Staff are really friendly, and was no problem for them to order us a taxi back. 100% recommend and hope to return!

Organised a group lunch here for 23 people and 27 turned up but the service, food and staff attentiveness was first class, despite menu choice changes. Everyone came to say what a lovely time they'd had so I was very pleased. Big thanks to Keri, Liane, Sean and the team for a memorable time.

Delicious food and attentive friendly staff! We had the special sea bream, perfectly cooked and full of flavour. I highly recommend the caramel brownie for dessert. All dietary requirements catered for, including vegan, vegetarian, gluten free. Non alcoholic beers, hand pulled ales and local beers. A hidden gem 💎

Very pleasant staff , friendly and helpful . The food was delicious ( especially the “special” pork belly with two veg ) and our friends enjoyed their fish dishes ( haddock and chips and a tasty trout dish) . There was a good wine list as well. On the minus side, we had to wait 35 minutes for our main course and since we hadn’t ordered a starter, we were a bit annoyed. Three of us ordered dessert; the winner was the strawberry Eton mess.

Had yet another fantastic meal here today. My fiancé and I love to visit here as it’s such a beautiful place. The girls are doing. A fab job and the food is amazing. Would definitely recommend. 5 stars on all levels.

Never had a bad meal or custom here. Thought I’d go vegetarian today, so tried the chickpea and potato cakes with feta salad. One of the tastiest salads I’ve ever had.

Enjoyed a fantastic meal here today with my fiancé. The service was excellent and we managed to get a table outside with the sun shining. Would definitely recommend a visit as you won’t be disappointed

Couldn’t decide what to eat so had each one of the bar snacks - absolutely lovely - each dish was and individual flavour experience and all at fab prices, like lovely big plates of tapaz! Go well with a bear as a snack too. Good service and plenty of others eating too, nice atmosphere and very accommodating.

We were here for a wake following a funeral at St. John's and the service was excellent. The Hinch has always been a lovely pub with a great pint, but the food was absolutely delicious. Well filled sandwiches and fat sausage rolls were some of the nicest parts of the buffet and everyone was very complimentary. We'll definitely be returning to sample the regular menu

Lovely pub setting in Cragg Vale. Great food options as well. Ordered the steak and ale pie but it was quite rich in flavour. Heavy on the ale, overpowering the rest of the dish. Served with chips and mushy peas, the chips were quite bland. I would also be a bit pedantic and say it’s a pot pie opposed to a pie as it was served in a dish with a pasty lid. I wouldn’t let this one visit put me off ever returning. It’s one occasion, would happily go back to try something else. The service itself was great. Very friendly and quick.

The new management have revitalised “The Hinch” with an excellent menu range, catering for the Vegetarian and Gluten free persuasion. With very generous portions, you certainly won’t leave hungry. The Fish and Chips were very good and the Honey Glazed Pork Belly, smoked in house was exceptional. Pricing is reasonable with a Sunday meal for 4 with starters and a round of drinks at circa £25 a head. Openly catering for Walkers and dogs, making for a lovely enjoyable scenic lunch out.

Arrived at 12.30 Subday lunchtime after a short walk from Hubberton. Sun was so hot decided to eat inside for the shade. I had Steak & Kidney pie . My sister had sea bream and her partner had the chickpea cakes. We were all very pleased with our choices and the prices are reasonable both for the meals and the drinks. Service was excellent. I will definitely be returning. Thanks.

Only called in for a drink which we enjoyed outside in the sun. We will definitely be going back soon to try the food there.

Just had a fabulous meal at the Hinchcliffe. Both the Haddock and steak and Kidney Pie were fantastic and excellent value for money! They had clearly been made on the premesis and to a very high standard. Will definitely be returning. There was a lovely friendly welcome and the whole place was spotless.

Nice friendly pub tucked away in a real rural setting in Cragg Vale with the river on one side and woodland on the other. Large carpark and plenty of room inside and outside, very well staffed excellent food 🍲 and a good selection of beers. Well worth a walk upto the reservoir on the Moors and visit the pub on the way back 🔙 as we did for some lunch.

This is a great pub with friendly hosts, fab pub food and lovely inside and outside spaces. Fab to see it open and busy again.

We went to the hinchcliffe arms last weekend, the food is very reasonably priced and both me and my husband enjoyed our food. We originally sat outside, but started raining so we moved inside. Inside it’s nicely decorated and the staff were pleasant.

Wanted to like this newly opened local pub,unfortunately it lacked atmosphere. Was shown to our booked table that was just that a bare table.It wouldn't need much to dress them a little, a vase of flowers and a candle,some background music would have made a difference. My husband had belly pork which he said was nice,I had seabream which unfortunately was over cooked and dry Far too many capers and too many chilli flakes for a delicate fish.The 2 ladies were very friendly but it doesn't seem to have worked out if it's a pub or restaurant. If I'm paying £18.50 for a main meal I would expect a little restaurant ambience. Also children running around and dogs sat at tables (I am a dog owner and believe paws on floors is where they should be) is not what I want when I eat out.I realise they are still bedding in but unfortunately at this current time I wouldn't visit again sadly. The 2 girls were welcoming and friendly and I wish them every success, its just not for us.

I attended the Hinchcliffe after hearing good reports of the new owners menu.There was a party of 8 and I was pleased with the variety of the menu.Its good old fashioned pub grub food.I opted for the pie which was cooked to perfection and within a whisker of my old grandma's recipe.The food was piping hot and good portions.Good service and nice surroundings mean I will return again for sure.Good luck to the new owners.

Knockout afternoon today on our trip to the Hinchcliffe Arms. The place was packed, but the service and food for our table of ten was never anything but superb. I also don’t think I’ve met a landlady that works so hard and cared about her pub and clients that much.

We had such a great night thanks to the great atmosphere, fab team and clearly a very good chef!! It’s been a long time since I’ve been here it’s on the way up for sure!!!

First visit back to The Hinchcliffe since before lockdown and what a treat. Now under new management with new daily menus. Small plates great for sharing, packed full of flavour and local seasonal produce. The homemade bread is pretty amazing too. We'll be back.

I visited the pub for a fell race and was immediately impressed from the start. Esther, I believe her name was, was very friendly and looked after us from the start. Her customer service skills are second to none! Suggested a lovely chilli after the race and did not dissappoint. Reasonably priced and lovely food and cant say enough about staff but I was very impressed. If you're in the area you MUST visit this place. Amazing, thank you 😊 😜

Very disappointing experience. We asked if we could dine 1h early and told this would be fine. What this actually meant was that we could sit at the table for an hour and not be served until the reservation time. Our orders were taken first, ahead of two other tables. They clearly put in the orders the wrong way around as these two tables were served first. The quality of the food was nice but it was very overpriced for what you got. The service was very stressy and they also added meals to our table which we didn’t have. The toilets were also a bit mouldy and the pub was quite dark. I don’t think the pricing matched the atmosphere. Overall there were multiple issues here which combined to create a disappointing experience.

This was the second time we had visited, we'd booked hoping for a Sunday dinner. But it seems they only do Sunday dinners once a month. But before I get to the negative bits... Staff are friendly and welcoming and were unphased by the mess the 7 month old baby had left on the floor. It's a nice looking rural pub. However. We arrived to be given the menus that consisted of, solely, tacos. No choice at all. They weren't even realistic tacos; chicken on the bone tacos, pea taco, trout taco. No nachos etc to go with, just roasted potatoes. A single dessert on the menu. Really disappointing. We asked if we could have a child size one, no we could not. All we wanted was a single taco rather than the two. We were in two minds as to leave but stayed, no one finished their food. Really disappointing as last time we had enjoyed a good Sunday roast. No I'm not expecting a Sunday roast everywhere, but some choice at least would be a good start. So. We won't be going there again.

Took advantage of the Manchester Confidentials offer and popped into here. Lovely spot, tucked away with great walks around. The food is essentially pub grub done super creatively. Every dish packed powerful flavours and rich, to the point of decadence. The simple scallops were lifted to another level with a mousse like cod roe dish. The mackerel was moreish and crispy, with the miso and tomato as great supporting acts. The humble cheese pie was uber rich but cleverly done! The malt ice cream for a very apt ginger pudd for autumn was a perfect finish. You will be full and sated.

Mixed experiences here, meat dishes are often good if small, fish, veg and deserts can be underwhelming, service variable at best. Now under new management thankfully.

Wow! Just fantastic. A very simple menu, expertly executed, and served by a team of genuinely lovely people. Faultless. Soooooo glad the pandemic is behind us and The Hinchcliffe is able to share its charm again.

Amazing Sunday roast, good drink selection and really friendly staff. Perfect stop after a walk in the lovely Whithen Clough and you can also get to Stoodley Pike from there.👌🏽😊

Great food and service - come hungry!

A slightly disappointing experience this time. My meal was fine (devilled sardines and caper mayo). My husband had roast beef on dripping toast. The beef came pink and tough, he had to send it back. Also they had a dog in the bar area that wanted us to play frisbee with it. Not really what you want when you're eating. Lovely dog by the way. A family came in and left because the boy didn't like the dog barking. Overall they need to think about their customer service.

Crowded, no WiFi, full of screaming kids.

What a great pub, just couldn't fault it, the staff were very friendly and welcoming and the food and beer were delicious.

Trip down memory lane , haven't been for years. Pleased to be back, excellent menu, all 4 of us had something different and we weren't disappointed. Efficient ,friendly service, great food, value for money. Definitely be back.

As this pub has only just reopened and isn't yet serving food, this rating is based solely upon the warm friendly welcome we received, the condition of the lager we drank, the wonderful building itself and its cleanliness. Hoping that translates into the food. Have returned to find the food of excellent quality, as were the two bottles of wine we had with our meals. Just one very minor detail I would like to see modified, the layout of the wine list. One white wine is hidden away on the back under cocktails, and the wines that are not sold by the glass do not have a price next to them at all. Most irritating having to ask the waitress.

Absolutely amazing food. The chef should be congratulated. Not very often i say this either. The prawn starter followed by the sirloin steak was excellent. The whole family was impressed by the food. The service was excellent. Recommended definitely

We were a party of 11 and the staff were brilliant. The food was excellent with loads of veg. The menu may have been a little restricted, but that's no bad thing in my opinion. A little more ventilation to combat covid would be desirable. The pub is in a very nice setting with a decent car park. Would definitely go again.

Heard many good things about the “Hinchliffe Arms” so decided to call in for a meal. It is a hidden gem in a very beautiful setting which is also a bonus. The staff were extremely friendly, attentive and the food was even better! I had the goats cheese crumpet which was extremely delicious and then for main I had the fish & chips, simple but very tasty. The fish was fresh and crispy, the chips were the best pub chips I’ve ever had fluffy and golden. Was not disappointed and will definitely be returning!

Summary: Lovely building and setting, pleasant waiting staff but tiny boring beer selection and very average food verging on poor. The beer was very uninspiring - with so many new micro breweries and new flavours out there and a choice of guest beers available in all the other pubs the ‘Hinch’ stands out for its lack of choice and middle of the road Beers - usually only 2 Bitters = The Hinch (average and after several years now frankly please change) and a guest beer but as before both are frankly dull and even the guest is somehow always just bland ??? with nothing like a hoppy IPA as is popular these days ? The other draught stuff is literally from 1980’s - its not a free house so i guess they sell and we drink what the brewery decide and its not based on popularity , taste or quality...margin is king. I had the Fish and Chips on this occasion and the fish was just bland , tasteless and a bit soggy - tasted cheap and i think frozen as it didn’t have that moistness and fresh full flavour to it that good quality fish does. Literally chip shop fish and chips are at least 10x better - Basically for £12 they could and should do much better on what is bound to be a very popular menu choice all through the year. The mushy peas again under seasoned and bland were served in a tiny tiny ramakin - pointless and gone in 1 mouthful...Just dissapointing...

Had an outside table without a booking. The steak and the burger were excellent. Staff friendly and helpful. Great spot to eat if you are in the area.

Very nice pub well away from the main road

Called today for lunch with my son...the food was delicious...the cheesecake is to die for!, tastes homemade. Beautiful setting in the countryside, a wonderful gem of a find!, ill definitely be returning!

We came here after taking a walk round hardcastle crags.We had booked a table for outside dining but were disappointed to be placed in the shade with no heaters either.We ordered drinks and food fairly quickly although both the starters and mains took a while to arrive.The blue cheese bhajis don’t taste of blue cheese at all, just an average onion bhaji with dandelion and burdock sauce so quite disappointing.The ribs were nice however and fell off the bone.The ploughman’s platter was average.We had to chase up the bread and butter starter which we had ordered for 2 kids who were starving and then had to request knives to butter the bread as they weren’t provided.For mains we shared the Sunday dinner platter between 4 of us which was really really nice but needed more gravy, lots more gravy but unfortunately there wasn’t a waitress in sight to ask.The kids enjoyed 2 plain cheese burgers.For dessert we had the white chocolate and raspberry cheesecake which my boyfriend said was one of the best cheesecakes hes ever eaten.We also ordered the chocolate fudge cake which I am told was yummy.Overall this was a lovely place and we would probably return if we are ever in the area again
