We booked too late for an event at The Piece Hall to get a hotel in the centre. Location is fine but you're best off with a car or taxis - it's not far out of the centre but the local roads make it a bit of a challenge to walk there or back. Room was clean and tidy, staff were friendly. Good value for the money.

Went on Thursday evening (mums 85th birthday)went with family. Food was lovely, cooked perfectly. Fish and chips really nice (size of the fish) staff nice and friendly. Would recommend to anyone. Had a lovely evening. Thank you x

Lasagne was tasteless could have been made with a jar of dolmio, beef pie lacked flavour as well, chips not cooked properly tasted like they had been reheated,not worth the money.

I would have given a 4 if it wasn't for the customer service. I'm coeliac so eating out for me is more of a chore, finding food is hard and with the limited choice on the menu as most places I struggled to find something I could eat. Our servers were amazing, one in particular went above and beyond to help me, instead of me having a sandwich whilst everyone else had a meal, she went out of her way and found an alternative before my food was made and came back to offer me a dish which they could put together for me. Made my day! Thanks to Emily!!

Myself and my family chose to go to the Stump Cross for a family meal and I cannot recommend this restaurant enough from our arrival we was meet with the most friendly welcome from all the staff especially Emily and Deborah the rest of the team was equally amazing well done team Stump cross we will definitely be back thank you.

Was on a coach trip to Shibden Hall, called in for lunch. Delicious carvery.

Tom and the team looked after us from start to finish when we organised a funeral tea. Nothing was too much trouble and every member of staff was very accommodating. Fresh food and great quality. He also arranged accommodation for a family member who was super impressed with her room. Would have no hesitation recommending.

Very popular food pub. Good selection of beers available. Great selection of food with both a traditional pub food menu and a more “fancy” a la carte menu. Really enjoyed our food and deserts. Service was great, really friendly and helpful. Thought the drinks were a bit expensive (7 quid a pint).

I recently wrote a review in April detailing a poor experience of a family meal. The owner contacted me regarding this and offered us a voucher for £30 to use on a return visit. We accepted this and went back as a family of 5 adults in May. When booking we didn't mention this as the voucher was on email so it could of been given for any reason as we didn't want this to sway our visit. We all had the carvery with some members of our party having desserts too. The carvery was beautiful and so were the desserts. There was no issue with the food ( as there wasn't in my original review) The only thing that let's the stump cross down now is the slow service. We waited a long time for order to be taken and then we had to ask for someone to come over as after our main meals no one attended to us. We also had to go the bar several times for our own drinks because no one attended to us. Once stump cross have rectified this, the whole experience woule be perfect as the food is cooked to perfection. The service wouldn't stop us from returning as it's not that the service when we did have it was bad, because that isn't the case. It's just incredibly slow Every table Was in use when we visited but only 2 waitresses for all the dining area which results in poor service. I hope stump cross can fix this issue as its the only thing letting them down. I have only just wrote this review because you have to have a month between reviews on trip advisor but I wanted everyone to know that my original bad review had been dealt with promptly by stump cross and they were sorry for how we were treated on our past visit. We will certainly be back and do recommend this pub/restaurant to others for both tbr main menu and the Sunday Carvery.

Stopped for Sunday lunch. Fantastic. Huge plate of food, great value, and for me the steak pie and the gravy were the superstars. Great service, super friendly, and the chef even explained how he makes the yorkshire puddings. Will be back when back in area.

Carvery was the best I’ve ever had. Meat and veg all fresh and delicious. Kids meals are top quality too. Reasonably priced. Will be returning again soon

Booked through air b and b absolutely lovely staff great selection of drinks food was absolutely delicious and reasonably priced too!! Sizzling steak plate fajitas was beautiful! Room with ensuite was great very comfy bed. Warm and friendly atmosphere sat out in the beer garden in the sun. Only thing I’d critique is no lamp at bedside to read in bed. We’re northern we don’t like the big light on! We’ll be back thank you 😊

Was a great Sunday lucky for the 2 of us. Busy place but accommodated us in the bar area which was absolutely fine. Carvery is really good home cooked food, different meats, pie, fresh veg and cracking cauliflower cheese!

Booked to stay for two nights, Had an amazing evening meal and a lovely breakfast, food is definitely a 5**. All the staff where amazing, so friendly and couldn't do enough for us, The boiler had broken but they did everything they could to make sure are rooms where warm and comfortable, would definitely stay again if travelling to the area.

A nice friendly pub other than the changing facilities. There are no baby changing facilities available for men. No disabled toilet where you can change your baby. The only changing station is in the female toilets. Which in my opinion is ridiculous.

Went here once. I ordered a burger which I don't usually do and I'm glad I did. It was very nice. Very meaty and tasty.

I haven't been in the rooms so can't rate them. The location, of course, can't be faulted. It's beautiful around here. Outdoor seating. Plenty of parking. It's a bit squeaky clean for my tastes but that hardly qualifies as a criticism. The staff are friendly and - the best point, for me at least - is that they serve a perfect pint of Timothy Taylor Boltmaker. One of the most satisfying pints I've ever enjoyed. Nice Malty tones and far from being overhopped, which seems to be the fashion now, unfortunately for my pallette and, I suspect, old geezers like myself. (Go Freedom Pass Boys!) So, yes, a quiet pub with good service and a 5 star ale. I shall review the food when I eat something there!

Absolutely wonderful meal, excellent service from the staff who were so good with my toddler as well, the food was excellent, my toddler had the double pizza from the kids menu and my husband and I had fish and chips and the lamb shank as well as starters and dessert and the only complaint is that we couldn't finish it all haha.

On the off chance on a Sunday we rang up looking for some pub grub, and they offered to seat us in the bar area which we were fine with despite me having some sensory issues so bar areas can usually be difficult for me. When we arrived the bar area was so cosy & relaxed that it didn’t make a bit of difference to being in the dining area, In fact I really liked it. We both had the carvery and it was delicious, perfectly cooked meats, pie & comfort sides with great option. Over all we’ve been really impressed and will definitely be back as much as possible.Deserts were lovely too. All the staff were super friendly, helpful & efficient. I think I’ve found my perfect local cosy pub grub spot!

Went with a big group of visually impaired people we were extremely well looked after from start to finish . Definitely will return, food was delicious.

Only stopped off to pay a deposit on a booked event, but decided to stay for a coffee, and it was just excellent, from a local roaster, some of the best I've had of late.

Really nice place. Lots of parking, well laid out inside, and nice size eating area. Everyone was great, really friendly.

Driven past this place on my way to work for years and only just called in today, I overheard that the management is new. The welcome was lovely the service polite and attentive and the food was fantastic at a very reasonable price, will definitely be back.

We were welcomed here for a group pre-Christmas lunch, found all the staff friendly and helpful. As we were having such a good time, with good food and drinks, the clock advanced too quickly. This is such a good place for a meetup, being away from the hustle and bustle of the town centre, with Shibden Park just across the road being the perfect place for an afternoon walk.

Picked Stump Cross Inn to stop off for lunch as was on the route we where taking that day plus looked at the menu online and made it the go to pub that day , so to start good parking , inside we went and fire burning very welcoming as were the staff too , was seated without a problem considering it was busy and was only 1215 on a Thursday , drinks order taken along with the food order as we already knew what we wanted via looking online earlier , i had the slow cooked lamb shoulder with sweet potato mash and asked for a Yorkshire pudding and gravy to come out with it and i must say it looked a warming meal as was apt due to the snow on the ground outside , anyway it was very tasty i thoroughly enjoyed it , my mum had the Carvery which she said was very nice and such big portions she asked for what was left to be boxed to take home , thanks for a no fuss great service and a very tasty meal , if only someone could replicate the The Stump Cross Inn experience in Bristol [ Home ] i would be there at least twice a week ! Thank you for the great service and kindness its a real breath of fresh air these days and when up that way again will deffo be back in . Thanks Matt Smith

Amazing food! Had the carvery and it was all cooked to a high standard, meat was juicy and tender and was the perfect amount of veg, sauces and a good gravy to follow, could tell the chefs knew what they where doing. Staff where all really welcoming and friendly, would advise booking as it filled it rather fast! Kids menu was good and all freshly made and was all reasonably priced, will be back :)

Lovely, welcoming staff, great food and nice atmosphere so it's the full package! Apparently, the pub was once owned by the Lister family so if you're coming to Halifax to get a piece of Lister history, definitely stop by here! It's also just across from Shibden Hall so a perfect stop off for some food and a drink after you've explored Shibden. The pub is dog friendly as well; they have free treats for the dogs and a doggy menu! Bit of a nightmare to get out of the car park as it's on the bend of a busy main road but that's not something that can be helped! If we are back in the area, we'll definitely be visiting again.

I had steak with Yorkshire pudding at the pub. It was delicious and valued for money. Staff was attentive. She noted it was a bit difficult for me to use a butter knife to cut the steak, she asked if I needed a sharper one. Impressed!

Such a wide selection of food, Was so hard to choose from as it all sounded so nice! The food itself was lovely and very well presented! The staff were friendly and attentive. Will definitely be returning to try more off the menu! ☺️

We had a meal here last night 30th September 2023. Would definitely recommend the food it was exceptional. My husband had the fish pie and I had fish, chips and mushy peas. I had treacle sponge and custard for dessert. 5 star***

We were staying nearby and the hotel owners booked us a table here. Extensive menu with many choices including vegetarian. I had the belly pork which was delicious - high quality meat, fat rendered and crackling crisp and delicious. Vegetables perfectly cooked and fresh herbs on the potatoes. Beautiful presentation. The standard and presentation was more in keeping with a high class restaurant than pub food. My partner had steak which was equally good. Home made ginger sponge for pudding with cream, custard and ice cream. Very attentive staff and owner. All Covid 19 regulations adhered to. Would go back in a heart beat.

Absolutely fantastic welcome from John. Made us feel very valued as visitors to the area! Food was great - proper home made good for value money. Get more than your money’s worth and all freshly prepared! Cosy atmosphere and has made sure it’s adapted to Covid regulations for anyone who is concerned about safety precautions. A lovely little pub with great food that we enjoyed so much we went back for seconds! Would definitely recommend and revisit if in the area again! Chicken fajitas were amazing as was the Cajun chicken! Lasagne lovely too and the hand made chips were great!! Jade and Ryan :)

I have become a regular at this beautiful pub and every single time I go, I am never disappointed. Staff are friendly an helpful and cannot do enough to make your visit enjoyable. We were regulars here before the lockdown, this was our first meal after the easing of restrictions. I booked a table at which time they took our contact details in line with the regulations. It was a warm sunny day so we chose to eat outside, drinks and menus were delivered to our table. We both decided to have our favourite meals, Jill had gammon, & I had steak pie. Jill’s gammon was some of the best she ever had, and my steak pie, which now comes with the option of added Stilton, was just unbelievable good, best ever.....Great to see our local open again, with even better food than before

Went for dinner today, 12-08-20, with my family and it was absolutely BEAUTIFUL. I had the Cajun chicken and it was so so tasty, my daughter had jacket potato, which was value for money, crispy and lots of toppings. My other daughter had roast beef baguette, the beef was very tender and delicious. My son had the hamburger, which he loved. Overall all the food was amazing. Very, helpful and friendly staff. Will definitely go again.

Having stayed at the fabulous Shibden Hall View at Hough House, it was a hop skip and a jump to this lovely pub. The food is way better than standard pub fare... And the fish Fryday deal was frankly astounding value at £13.95 for two courses. We all had different starters and main courses, and all of them were excellent, large portions, beautiful flavours, and cooked to perfection. The only problem was that the food was so excellent that we ended up having desert as well... Very unlike us, and lockdown has left us a little fatter than we'd like! Still we justified it with the fact that we'd done an excellent walk in the day (that was our excuse anyway!). Will definitely return next time we are in this neck of the woods.

We’ve been going to the Stump Cross for years because of the service and quality of the food which is second to none especially the peppercorn sauce and the steak which is cooked to perfection, all the food is of excellent quality and cooked fresh to order. Johnny and the team are very friendly and always make you feel welcome. This is the only pub/restaurant I've felt comfortable going to since the start of the pandemic, if you are someone who would prefer not to sit inside they have a large beer garden where you can just have a relaxing drink or enjoy a leisurely lunch. Excellent 5*.

Went again tonight and yet again the food and service was impeccable! I really wanted the hot beef baguette but since it stops early I was considering alternates and thinking of the lamb but was a little hesitant due the fact I’d have to mess about with the bone etc (bit lazy but I wasn’t really in the mood to pick Hahahaa) the lady serving us noted that I was already going for a second option and why I wasn’t sure about the lamb and she asked “do you want me to ask the chef to take meat off the bone for you?” It’s that thought and going that extra mile that makes the stump one of my favourite places to eat can’t recommend highly enough, I’ll certainly be back this month ❤️

Went to Sump cross for a Sandwich and the Steak Melt. The best ever. You should try ne next time you go . You won't be disappointed.

Been shielding for 19 weeks so first visit in a while. Walked 3 miles there and 3 miles back! Worth the walk as food and service brilliant as ever. Best food about.

Took a small group of eight here for lunch after my appointment at the Registry office. Efficient service and quality pub grub that was enjoyed by all. Empty plates all round apart form my mixed grill which was very nice but too much food.

Popped in as an afterthought really, hadn't been here in years and what a good decision, had a fantastic lunch of nachos to start and a hot beef baguette to follow, the beef was simply super with not a bit of fat, the baguette crispy and fresh and the accompanying gravy was delicious. To be honest I could have eaten most of the menu and the prices were very reasonable for the standard of food produced. Well done Stump Cross!! Will be back

Visited this local pub/restaurant for a catch up with my mum and sister on a very busy Wednesday evening & had a great evening. The atmosphere was buzzing with nearly all tables full which was a surprise for a Wednesday evening. We were glad we booked and didn’t just turn up!! The staff are friendly welcoming and attentive without being over powering. The food is home cooked and delicious we would recommend the lamb shank or garlic chicken breast. I can’t wait for my next visit. Well done Stump.

The Stump Cross is a long standing local pub and is located not too far from another , higher profile local pub, sharing the name with the park which houses Anne Listers former home . The Stump is often seen as the blue collar relative of the allegedly higher class establishment . This couldnt be further from the truth. The Stump is run brilliantly . The menu is big enough to satisfy any taste and small enough to remain fresh . The service is exemplary and delivered by people who genuinely care about you and your enjoyment. The food is consistently cooked with love and attention and for the first time in a long time across many so called top restaurants , the veg at the Stump is fresh and tasty and prepared as it should be . The beer is fabulous , but havent yet sampled the wine. The Stump is run the way all pubs should be run, but very few are . Long live this amazing establishment.As for the posh local neighbour we wont ever be going back !!!

Visited for a family lunch on a recent Friday. It was busy during the "office lunch break" time.Service was still great, from very friendly and attentive staff.Food menu was varied, and portion size "generous" to say the least! A mixed grill brought to the adjacent table would have fed a whole family!!We all enjoyed what we had very much and would certainly recommend a visit.Great value for money too.

Visited today with two friends. We all have some mobility issues but they gave us a table which accommodates this. Had to go up a step to access the carvery but in getting there, without being asked, a member of staff appeared to hold my plate and carry it back to my table. Food was good and good value for money.We will definitely be back.

Apparently the oldest pub in Port Fairy which is attached to a hotel. Full of locals with a splattering of tourists.

...good service and a really pleasant atmosphere. The Inn just up the scenic Shibden Valley is likely to be booked up for ages after nationwide reviews, but the Stump Cross is splendid in its own right, for the reasons outlined above.

As a family we eat here fairly regularly. The food, cost and staff are worth the visit. Its very relaxing to eat here.

Went here with friends at Christmas and had the carvery it was very nice and so was the prawn cocktail starter , however the Baileys cheesecake was tasteless otherwise it would have got rated 5

Food was excellent and hot they do a small portion which I like (must leave room for a dessert). Both courses were delicious. Was very busy but service was quick.

Had another wonderful visit to this very welcoming pub/restaurant. Very good starters, quality carvery including an excellent steak pie, fresh veg and really good Yorkshire pudding. The staff including the landlord were very pleasant and welcoming to add to the experience. Great value for money as well, less than £80 for 4 starters, 4 mains and 8 drinks.

Called in here on the way home for a quick pint on a cold Tuesday night. Lovely warm fire and a pleasant girl behind the bar. Bit quite but what can you expect just after Christmas. Nice pint of Timmy Taylor's Bolt-maker.

Living on the east coast I thought I new what good fish and chips was, I was mistaken. This was by far the the tastiest I can remember with the bonus of home made tartar sauce. Great service, great staff and still cheaper than fish and chips on the coast. Xxxx
