The Hightown has been decorated to a high standard. Visited 2nd night of opening. The bar part was very busy and noisy. Seated quickly and presented with the menu. Unfortunately the restaurant was so popular they had sold out of many main dishes. Manager was very apologetic and compensated us generously. Had toast skegen for starters which was delicious. Had the chicken Caesar salad for main and chocolate fondant. I could not fault the food. However, the bar area was very noisy. We did discuss this with the manager when he invited us to give our feedback. He said he had a plan to tackle that and would in the future perhaps suggest larger groups of people drinking to be seated round the corner. I will be back soon.

A bit disappointed in the quality of some of the food for our group, soup and a sandwich, for example, was particularly poor yet the Cumberland sausage and mash was good. This was our first, and last time here.

We were very disappointed with the food which was greasy fish. We had fish and chips. We have in the past had had omelette and chips with the omelette sitting in grease. We wouldn’t like to chance another meal. Sorry, the pub and staff are really nice but the food is better elsewhere. We wouldn’t like to chance being disappointed again. We left it a long time in between going again thinking it was just an off day, but no, not for us!

Four of us Went here with my 87 year old mum. If you have a elderly family member you will know they don’t eat large meals, so, I asked for the children’s menu, so she could chose a smaller meal, I was told she was “NOT ALLOWED” to order from this menu for her as she isn’t a child. We were disgusted with this, we wanted to walk out to go somewhere else but didn’t as she is disabled and takes a long time getting her in and out of places, we will not be back

Went for lunch, first time visit but sadly the last… Entered to an empty pub, waited for a good while until someone attended to us, young lady and very pleasant when she eventually arrived. Halloumi burger and chips consisted of two breaded halloumi pieces, a tiny piece of lettuce and one slice of tomato ~ no sauce or relish, a stack of home made chips and coleslaw. It just felt ‘thrown together’ with no care, very unappetising, and the chips tasted like old fat and greasy. Thought I’d try pudding as I was still hungry having left some of my lunch, hardly anything available on there, with apologies from the staff, I asked for the bill and left. Overpriced, and lacking atmosphere ~ such a shame as previous reviews are generally great, so expectations were probably too high?

A story of 2 halves. The pub is really classy and staff were great overall but the food was awful and was definitely up there with the worst food I have ever eaten. I am a Chef and didn't think you could go wrong with pizza but I was obviously wrong. I would have rather eaten the cheapest frozen Iceland pizza than the murdered version of a pizza I was served, I made the mistake of ordering my kids a pizza also and they only ate one slice each. My wife ordered a lasagne which looked and tasted like a 5 year old had made it. If the food was free I wouldn't touch it with a barge poll. TERRIBLE.

Much improved!! We often stopped off at the end of a walk from Crosby beach but have always felt really underwhelmed by this place. Service was always very hit and miss and food wasn’t all that at all. They have a monopoly in Hightown and it’s not helped this pub! Still got some way to go with several blips and gardens need a lot of attention- could be gorgeous) but so much nicer in decor than it was previously. You can see it’s a well loved and happy family pub - bouncy castle there total for little ones and a mini train. We sat out and enjoyed the live entertainment on the last Bank Hol of the summer with a large bunch of friends and all had a lovely time. Bread with soup and sandwiches needed to be much thinner looked like it was slapped together and needed some salad, but soup was nice and thick with decent flavour (carrot & coriander). Friends had to wait a while for their order which was the curse of the previous incarnation with shoddy service but hoping that was just a small oversight. Coffees still awful though- semi cold straight from the machine - pet hate when you order a warm drink!!

We go the Hightown pub quite often, and have to say it’s by far the best pub I’ve ever been. Food is absolutely gorgeous, and the chunky home made chips are the best you’ve ever tasted! The service is also brilliant they really can’t do enough for you. They have a lovely Beer Garden and always really good entertainment on. It’s just a lovely environment to relax in and the Dog loves it too!

Visited for lunch last week with a friend from Australia who’d last been there in 1970 for his sister’s wedding reception, surprisingly he remarked it’d changed! Superb service once again at the bar, and at the table. Delicious well presented and priced food, and a beautiful sunny garden to top it off. This must be one of the very best pubs in Merseyside if not further afield.

We have family history at The Hightown but this was our first visit for a long time and it was lovely to see it refurbished, busy and buzzy. Ok here we go - 1st visit with my partner. Greeted very well by Clare. Was a Saturday approx 3 weeks ago. Excellent service, lovely omlette meal and good staff. So back again with my friend week later, I'd raved how great the place was! Ok so we ordered I had the omlette again and my friend ordered starter prawn dish. An hour later it arrived. Omlette fine BUT my friends prawn dish - 4 prawns in a watery sauce on a bed of wet lettuce, oh dear! I complained, refund of her dish.Back again day after as we had booked to bring another friend. So 3 of us. We waited 20mins to be asked if we were being seen to. Ordered drinks. Food I asked olives and bread. No we haven't any. Looked again, asked for pizza, no pizza! Ok just had coffee. My friends ordered a toastie between the 2. It arrived 1hr and a quarter later! They refunded as we complained about the wait. So my partner and I gave it another go on the following Saturday. Didn't wait too long and staff very nice. BUT the omlette was not good and the chips were cold and old looking! My partner ordered a chicken n bacon toastie, which said would be on granary bread. Was brought on white cheap bread, no salad and same quality chips. Such a shame because the place COULD be great as lovely surroundings. Unfortunately we will not be returning .A tip to owner - take a Look at the Boathouse Brasserie in Rufford, there menu is impeccable and always dam good. So could The Hightown , Shame .

I've visited here twice in two days. The first time I had the prawn cocktail which allegedly came with toasted ciabatta. So let me tell you about it, five prawns , prawn cocktail sauce and lettuce at £8 give it a miss., there wasn't any toasted ciabatta, just two.stale pieces of brown bread. My friend had omelette , no problems with that. However it did take more than an hour for these two items to come. We wanted pizza, no.pizza, second choice bread and.olives, no bread and.olives. Second visit , it took an hour and a.quarter for a toasted.chicken and bacon sandwich to arrive, it didn't have any salad when it should have, asked what happened, it arrived separately in a bowl. The good bits, a nice place to visit as it has been refurbished to a good standard. There was an amazing member of staff Meg who was trying her very best.to make things right for everybody. It's very clear that the some of the staff need more training. The ladies on the next table asked for their bill, the boy told them I don't do bills. (Wouldn't it be better to say I'll get somebody to sort that for you straight away) I'm rather sad as this is a local place we could have visited most weeks , its off the list already.

Food was nice and staff attentive.Although the website states that the establishment is family run for families - including the dog, there is a segregated dogs area that you cannot book in advance, so when arriving we couldn’t sit at the booked table and were directed to an empty area where dogs are allowed. My mum, sister and I came with my 3 week old son after a long walk and my baby needed his nappy changing, again as a family establishment I’d expect changing facilities to be available, but there isn’t any at all and we had to change my babies nappy on the bench, which is incredibly unhygienic. All that is needed is a table in both the ladies and gents toilets, but there is nothing of the sort.I probably won’t be returning while my little boy is in nappies, which is disappointing as I thoroughly enjoyed coming to the Hightown Pub prior to COVID-19.

We booked online for a family meal due to covid restrictions it was outside table service which is fine. On ordering drinks we were advised to order from the waiter but go up to the bar to pay for them. I queried could we not order drinks and food and pay a final bill and I was told no. So drinks ordered, my partner went to pay in the pub, we then ordered food and were given a receipt by the waitress and advised again we need to pay the bill in the pub before we were to get the meals. I asked the waitress if I could pay her and she said no you have to pay at the bar. I thought the idea of table service was to be served at the table, not go back and forth into the pub to pay for each item we wanted. We visited The Sparrowhawk last week and we were seated and served all drinks and food at the table and the staff took the final bill payments into the pub. The only time you were allowed into the pub was to use the toilets. So to be asked to go back and forth into the Hightown seemed a bit bizarre. The food was well presented but lukewarm and my child’s chicken meal tasted of fish. Not sure if it was fried in the same oil but it wasn’t pleasant. I’m loathe to leave a poor review as we try to support local businesses but unfortunately after really looking forward to trying out the newly refurbed pub, we were all left quite disappointed.

The beer and food are fabulous and the outdoor has a good amount of seating. This pub has worked hard to serve the public and make a lovely area to live even better. Well done We will be back!

We went in a party of x4 on Dec 27th. Lovely clean refurbished place and nice food. However, it must be said that having booked in for a meal at 7pm -we were asked to leave by 9pm. Without warning we were told that our slot of 1.5 hrs had now finished. When I pre-booked this NO ONE had made me aware this was the process. We were presented with the bill and informed we could not have any more drinks. The pub was EMPTY other than maybe one/two others sitting DRINKING without food in the rear of bar by TV area. We found this strange that in times of hospitality sector going through 'rough' times we were discouraged from spending monies. We totally understand all Covid restrictions and that we have to be out of premises by 10/11pm. However we were denied this. It was not a case of people waiting on tables -the dining areas were completely EMPTY. Shame as staff were very polite and helpful. Cant understand why this happened.

We visited 22.12.20 & were made to feel so welcome with our two dogs. The food was super tasty - we had the prawn starter, rarebit & a range of the pizzas. We’d order them all again they were so good. However we’re also keen to try the other options on the menu. Staff really friendly & accommodating, and, the ambience just right. It’s so good to have an awesome pub in the area. Highly recommended!

Well worth a visit. Marvellously refurbished, once restrictions allow for a bigger menu, this pub will rival Sparrowhawk and Pheasant Inn. Very welcoming with fantastic hospitality on offer despite the restrictions. Sunday roast was good, I would say the pick of the bunch is the ham although the roast chicken also looked good. Roast came with honey carrots (ace!), broccoli and parsnips. The halloumi 'fish & chips' was popular with our vegetarians. One constructive criticism would be the beef was probably too well done to get a full 5 star rating but overall for the 6 of us the food was fantastic. We shall be returning frequently.

Easy to book online despite being first Sunday post Covid 19 second lockdown. The quality standards of roasts remained high with fresh produce, hospitality second to none thanks again to Demi, and the desserts still tops with the apple crumble with custard. And this time I had the blue berry cheesecake. Hot flat white and English tea. BTW big portions!

The pub is now absolutely stunning – comfortable, attractive and welcoming; friendly staff. The menu however needs a rethink. It’s just not diverse enough and certainly not enough for vegetarians and/or pescatarians. I struggled to find anything suitable so my husband and I had the fish and chips – for the relatively high price I was expecting perfection! This was not the case – the fish (cod) was absolutely tasteless. The batter and the chips were good but certainly not nearly enough chips and a tiny portion of mushy peas. I would give it another try for food but unless it is of a much better quality then I would only return for a drink, I’m afraid!

The pub looks absolutely gorgeous since the refurbishment, and the new menu is stunning. All the staff are super friendly and chatty, and have all stayed in line with COVID-19 regulations making it safe and enjoyable. Also the dog friendly area is great! Glad it’s my family’s local.

Worth a visit. Beautifully refurbished by the McLouglin family. Thank you Joe and Demi for the fantastic hospitality. Big portions of tender ham and beef with honey carrots, broccoli and parsnips. Lovely apple crumble cheese cake and the most perfect piping hot latte. It's a shame the forthcoming lockdown will prevent us returning as soon as we would like.

Such a lovely visit to our local which has now had a huge revamp and looks amazing. Service was fantastic, Georgia was really helpful and friendly. Food was lovely but would like a little more choice but I’m sure that will happen in time. Great atmosphere and dealt with the government guidelines perfectly. Will definitely return

Visited over the weekend before imminent lockdown and have to agree with the reviewers that have said they were disappointed.Without a doubt, the refurb has improved the look/feel considerably (it couldn't have got much worse to be fair!) However, the service and value for money let it down considerably. Service was painfully slow and disjointed, with multiple staff taking our order, serving drinks etc, which led to it being quite muddled. As our food took so long (over 50 mins just for some basic starters) we ran out of drinks and no one was checking on us (no standing at the bar currently) so that wasnt ideal. The menu is very limited, not a huge amount of choice especially for veggies or for kids. Were told kids could have a kids portion from main menu but many dishes not really kid friendly (and I don't subscribe to kids only eating golden foods!), not many kids like black pudding or pork with mustard mash and red wine jus! A pizza menu did appear but the pizza was pretty poor, thick tomato paste and limited toppings for £6.50 which was steep.Beers were OK, could do with a few more choices. This also applies to the soft drinks. I really want this place to do well. However for it to be a good standard (and justify the higher pricing, similar to the nearby sparrowhawk) then they really need to spend some time training staff and reconsider either their pricing or improve the standard of what is on offer.I'll give it a little while before going back but will go back, hopefully it is just a case of them finding their feet, particularly during a very tricky time for hospitality.

Food and staff good. Pub was overcrowded with extra chairs and tables meaning people couldn’t get into the seats of the empty tables as they were blocked by the people sitting behind them. Wetherspoons Southport looked dirty and unkempt, all 3 coffee machines didn’t work. The staff were polite efficient and pleasant and keep the place ticking over. If it wasn’t for them I wouldn’t go again. The owner makes lots of money and is treating his customers poorly . Outside the tables area was littered with stub ends of cigs why is he allowed to keep tables on the grass verges now covid is over?

Went here for breakfast, the tables where dirty/sticky. The staff member who served me wasn't very pleasant, all stood vaping behind the bar. The food was diabolical, really grim. Wouldn't recommend.

Food was really poor quality, no flavour, all frozen nasty cheap stuff. Left most of mine it was that bad. Shame as this place used to be packed out. On a positive - friendly staff behind the bar, chatty and sincere.
