The Highlander Bar in Scarborough

I don’tknow if this place is any good. After 15 minutes waiting at the bar, only 1 person got served - by the 2 staff. The 1 ‘serving’ then left 6 of us waiting and went outside to wipe down tables. Rude, surly, we up and left.

Called in very clean excellent service Had meals next door 4* hotel needs advice from here!! food nice and hot tasty chicken curry and scampi pleasant staff good beer And reasonable price well done

Called in for food and a drink. Yesterday had steak special. Really good well presented and enjoyable meal. Good service. Call again today had liver with onion gravy chips peas ,lovely once again. Good service . Now the pub as turned around and Hopefully locals will support and make it a success once was. Prices were competitive and has nice atmosphere. Will call in again next time I am in Scarborough.

I’m a local here and The Highlander has now been blessed with new management. We have been in a number of times over the last couple of months and Angie, Eugene and their assistant bar manager, Luke, are really welcoming. They are working really hard and from what we can see, are bringing the Highlander up many levels. The food has also greatly improved. Looking forward to coming back in, and we will definitely be recommending to friends.

When we arrived at this hotel for a 3 night stay, we where told we were on the third floor and our friends were on the second floor. We where told the lift was broke. 59 stairs we had to climb, my husband is waiting for a new hip and I have a bulging disc in my back. We were told they were waiting for them to come to repair the lift. The room had a double bed and 2 single beds of which none where comfy. The windows didn't have safety catches. Which wasn't good as we got the impression it was a family room.The bar and food was faultless and staff where brilliant. This hotel really does need updating. Next time we visit Scarborough we will call for a drink but not to stay.

Booked this hotel from recommendation from our hotel.Seated in a make shift working mans club, ordered fish and chips + extra bread and butter.Fish was a Aldi oven fresh one‍♂️Bread never came.I’m not a snob, but really a seaside resort bar serving that, really come on.Won’t be going again, rather go to Iceland and cook my own.

I’m sorry but this place has died! The highlight of this pub was Karen, she knew all of her regulars, treated right, walked through the door and your drinks were on the bar! Had a drink in there today, no atmosphere, poor wine choice, the bar staff could be robots, it’s so sad, what a shame, it’s really lacking in atmosphere and character

The food is really nice, plentiful and at a fair price. We had our evening meal here for 3 nights so sampled a few things on the menu and nothing disappointed. Loved the chips.

A return visit to the Highlander on our recent stay in Scarborough. My husband and I are great fans and were a little bit concerned to learn that since our last visit in October 2019 it had been taken over by new owners. It still has a great, homely atmosphere. We both had the steak to eat which was amazing value - and the chips were fantastic. Lots of cleaning was taking place and the staff were friendly and efficient.

Good food, well cooked and plenty of it. The Highlander was recommended by a member of staff at the Esplanade Hotel.

Great little pub attached to a hotel. Would happily recommend this place, it’s clean friendly, as a great selection of beers. A good choice for a beer or two.

Stopped off at the Highlander Bar for a couples of drinks prior to returning to our hotel. The bar felt safe and the barmaid was very attentive to our needs. Recommended for a drink

My wife booked a room at the hotel for my birthday and we decided to eat in the bar, the food was fantastic, I have the beef pie and my wife had the 10oz gammon steak, both were excellent. The staff are warm and friendly and made time for my kids (16months and 3yr). Would highly recommend

I hate writing negative reviews, but we were pretty disappointed in the Highlander this year - having had a reasonable meal last year.I ordered a Massala Curry which was supposed to be served with a naan. The "Massala" consisted of a lot of chopped onions, a few chopped peppers and some nondescript sauce of some sort. Pretty poor to be honest. I picked out the chicken, ate some of the rice and called it a day. A few minutes into the meal I realised the naan hadn't turned up, and asked about it. A few minutes later still, a lady turned up at the table and told me they didn't have any. Apparently the delivery person had let them down... fair enough, but it would have been nice to know when I placed the order that part of it wouldn't be arriving. She offered to get me a bread roll or something, which kinda missed the point, and by now I'd had enough.Apparently the liver and onions a friend had were quite nice, but the other two meals were also poor.Come on Highlander, pull your socks up.

Excellent for a party or just a meal. We went last night for a colleagues retirement and the landlady was so helpful in helping organising it for us. We had a private room which was beautifully set out and lovely and warm. The food was proper home cooked food no frozen chips in sight. Bar prices and food not stupid money either Would we recommend it for a party yes. Or just a family meal Thankyou to the land lady sorry for got your name and your staff for making it a lovely night.

Visited with a friend today for the Sunday Carvery, and had a drink beforehand in the bar, which had a lovely welcoming fire burning. The meal itself was brilliant, everything cooked to perfection and as much or as little as you wanted. All the staff were really friendly and welcoming. Can thoroughly recommend, will definitely be going back again.

The food was ordered - liver and onions and lasagne and we waited and after payment and 15 mins, we were informed our choices weren’t available. Well ‘can I have the haddock’ - that’s wasn’t available either. We ended up with sausage and mash and cheeseburger and chips! The cheeseburger tasted like it had been cooked the day before!! The veg tasted weird and I love veg. Needless to say there will be no more visits!

Staying up the road and called in for a pint and bite, ordered beer reviewed menu and ordered fish and chips but told not available so ordered rump steak again told not available so drunk pint and left ! Come on this should not happen and will not visit again !

Nice friendly place, recently changed owners.Good selection of reasonably priced drinks and ales. It was quiz night when we called in and the place was full. Needs some TLC to get the decor back up to speed. Food seemed reasonably priced too although limited choice. More a traditional pub setting with seating outside to look out to sea.Friendly enough place but, nothing to want you to stay too long, other than the quiz

nice bar especially when its cold with the open fire the drinks prices are reasonable we didnt eat here but looking at other peoples food it looked good

I was concerned that the change in ownership may lead to a drop in quality at my favourite establishment. I need not have worried. Still a friendly welcome, still a pleasant atmosphere and still very good food.

Enter this establishment and you are greeted with a tired interior in need of some TLC. However we knew the beer was good so opted to eat here. However there was virtually no beer! Unusual for a pub that all the pulled ales were gone. We were aware of a change of management and the big lease sign outside is a clue, however we persisted and drank lager. We ordered before 6.30pm to take advantage of the 2 for £12 offer. The food was actually pretty good. I ate the scampi which was very nice and excellent value. This place certainly has potential and I will visit again once the new owners have got to grips with it.

After reading the reviews for the highlander we decided to go there for our evening meal, it was not as expected, verging on disappointing. It needs a good old clean up, even the tables would benefit from a wipe. The food was bland, the fish and chips that I had were soggy and tasteless, you would at least expect fresh fish being in Scarborough. Would not go again, although the staff were friendly and polite.

Visited for dinner on Thursday 9th May. We arrived before 6.30pm and ordered two meals from the early bird menu for 12 pounds. The meals were good and sufficient for what we paid. Recommend you do the same.

We enjoyed an evening meal here at very reasonable price. Great service even though it was a busy evening we were told there would be a wait of half an hour but our meals arrived before that, so just time for a drink first.

Fantastic food at budget prices. Great service and extremely friendly locals. This establishment is deceiving from the outside, don’t be put off, inside is absolute quality. Highly recommend.

Fantastic weekend away can't fault the place one bit. Food is lovely Brilliant hostess Excellent location I would recommend this place to anyone.

I enjoy calling here as it is a spacious Bar with a good selection of Beers. Nice Guinness on draught, which few hotels keep, in the area seem to have. Barmaid works hard to keep the place clean and service is very good. Top location on the Esplanade and fabulous views.

Popped in here for pre theatre meal, great value early bird special, two meals for £12 before 6.30pm. Friendly efficient service. Food was home cooked. Would definitely call again.

We had drinks here initially and then went back for food the next night. It’s welcoming and warm with a real fire, just what you need to get out of the cold.

Nice pub on the front with great views, drinks were a bit pricey, but lots of choice and a real fire.

My favourite local bar but due to the serving times we rarely have the Sunday Carvery here. Circumstances were different this Sunday so we gave it a go.

a very cold night in March saw us seeking refuge in this pub. A warm welcome and a hint that if we ordered before 6 we would get the special deal ( five minutes to six). We asked if we could have garlic bread for starters, not in the starters menu but staff were happy to oblige, and it was delicious. Food came quickly and was very tasty, good portion size and nice and hot. Didn't have room for pudding. Glass cabinets full of whiskey bottles, could not decide if full or demo, but looked tempting. Would come again.

Have been here several times now, it has a warm, welcoming atmosphere and , although we haven’t even eaten here ourselves, the food coming out looks excellent

My sister who always visits the highlander when in Scarborough introduced us to this little gem .. Friendly staff and lovely home cooked food and Good value for money!

Lovely cosy pub with a beautiful open fire,friendly staff and locals.Its like walking into a pub in the 1970's.Amazing glass cabinets full of old bottles of whiskey.Plenty of seating and food looked nice too although we didn't eat here

Evening meal and drinks visit. Nice décor and surroundings. Interesting collection of whiskies on display. Good drinks selections and we were very happy with the food we got. Staff nice enough, clientele mixed, both locals and tourists.

Went in on Saturday afternoon for a couple of drinks, the pub was quite busy, it also had a real coal fire on the go, we stayed longer than intended, really nice friendly pub

Called in Sunday night for an evening meal, I had the sausage and mash and I can honestly say it was the worse I've ever had, poor quality sausage and the mash was shocking left most of eat to save my internal system the unpleasantness of processing it,not recommended . We also had to ask for the tables to be wiped clean .

When in Scarborough normally take my mum here for lunch. Large choice on lunchtime menu 2 for £10. Fast, friendly service. Food tasty and fair portion size. Eating area cosy and clean. Have tried, Lasagne, Scampi, Pie, Large Yorkshire Pudding, Fish and chips and all have been perfect.

We stayed in Scarborough for a few days and came across the Highlander Bar. What can I say really nice people so helpful and polite. The meals were so good we ended up eating there 3 night 2 of which were 2 meals for £12. the qualiy of the food was excelent and I would recommend anybody to pop in and try the food.

A firm favourite when ever we go to Scarborough, The Highlander Hotel/Bar. Positioned on the Esplanade with stunning view across Scarborough's beautiful bay, reaching far out to the sea, the views are truly breath-taking. The Hotel offers very nice accommodation, clean very presentable. If you get rooms at the front, which are the best for those stunning views, its just the icing on a beautiful place. Karen & Nick are the owners, its a family owned and run. Nothing is to much trouble, you are made at home from arriving to departing. The Bar meals are very nice, serving lunch times and evenings, with early bird menu teatime, very fair priced. As we always stay at the Highlander, going back several years, we enjoy the Bar in the evenings for a nice relaxing few drinks. Thursday is Quiz night, and very popular. The Highlander is very popular with locals and Tourist alike. You wont be disappointed, we see people coming back, like us, year after year.. Thank you Karen & Nick, we stayed with you in June this year, and have just returned home enjoying more time at you place. I say its like going home. And it is. Superb home cooked meals, all cooked from fresh. Very good price and if you eat between 4.30pm and 6.30pn meals are two for £12.

My friend and I called in for a well earned drink one afternoon in July. We were made to feel very welcome and the bar seemed very popular with the locals. We looked at the menu and decided to return later for an evening meal. So glad we did as the food was lovely. We ordered lasagne, it came with a small side salad and garlic bread. The food was piping hot and the lasagne was gorgeous, it certainly tasted homemade and the portion was large that we both struggled to finish it off. Would certainly return again.

We ate here twice during our recent weekend away and loved it. A great bar with plenty of atmosphere and a local feel to it so good if you just want to call in and have a drink or two. The food is good traditional pub grub and great value for money. Plenty of families with kids of all ages so great for everyone.

Ate here several nights while on holiday. Food is always good and hot. Good portions and value for money. Try the lamb shank, delish.

The food is freshly cooked and is excellent value. The staff are friendly and they make both locals and visitors welcome. We had 2 evening meals there during the week and called for coffee one morning - it was fresh filtered coffee again at a very reasonable price. We were able to sit outside with our drinks. The bar is clean and tidy and has some interesting panoramic pictures of Scarborough. My daughter said her vegetable lasagne was the best she's tasted. My sister says it's good for lunch.

Good walk around the town and walk back to Spa Cliff railway brought us to walking past the Highlander Hotel and bar. We popped in for a pint - good range of beers and what looks to be an excellent choice of food for very good prices. Wish we had found this place earlier as our own hoetl's evening fayre was awful.

We popped in for a quick drink at the end of the evening, a nice bar with friendly waitress, everyone in there was enjoying themselves - it was a very comfortable atmosphere

The best Broccoli and Mushroom pasta bake have it every time and my friend usually opts for the Fish and Chips. The menu consists of steaks, scampi, fishcakes, chilli and lots of other pub grub the difference it that its homemade as my pasta bake is slightly different every, on a tea time they do 2 meals for £12

It's one of the best bars we visited in Scarborough in terms of the general ambiance. It's too stuffy though and the food is not great.

We ate here every night while staying at the highlander hotel, great choice of food the lamb shank I had one night was absolutely Devine !!! As we stayed in February and April a totel of 12 nights altogether we tried most of the meals on the menu and we're delighted with every meal, pies chips and curry's all home made fresh veg served also great prices as well.thankyou

We stayed at The Highlander over the Easter weekend. Despite the grey damp weather we really enjoyed our few days here. On arrival the friendly staff quickly arranged a parking permit then showed us to our room on the second floor. Our spacious room overlooked the seafront with views over to the harbour. It was very clean with lots of space. A good extra was a comfy 2 seater settee where we could sit to watch TV or just admire the views. Tea and coffee facilities were also provided. The bed was comfortable and the linen spotlessly clean. The large bathroom with shower over the bath was more than adequate with lovely fluffy white towels provided.

We always pop in here for a drink or two when in Scarborough. A nice, friendly pub where you're always made welcome.

Another excellent meal in what in my opinion is the best pub in Scarborough. Excellent food, good choice of beers, relaxing atmosphere, good background music and friendly staff.

Stopped in on a Saturday night for tea, bit surprised to see the dining room closed - pub was rammed, not a table spare, staff seemed to be confused that it was off-putting for diners to not want to have to huddle over small, low tables to eat their dinner.

Had another excellent meal here on sunday. Would definitely say best carvery ive had in Scarborough and we have had quite a few over the years!!. Lovely staff,delicious,reasonably priced food. Would definitely recommend.
