The Hide Steakhouse in Wakefield

My experience with The Hide was somewhat of a mixed bag. Let me explain. My partner and I decided to go here for our anniversary - we are both big steak fans and wanted to try something new. Upon arriving, the restaurant was very quiet - for a Tuesday I expect this and it served us well. The lady who served us was nice, if a little clueless about what they did/didn't sell but more on that later. We sat down at a window table and was pleasantly surprised by how lovely the whole restaurant looked from where we were sitting. We decided on a corner-window seat as we didn't know how full the place would get later and didn't want to get in the way. I sat directly in the corner and was slightly dismayed to see that I had sat DIRECTLY under a speaker. It was rather loud and I had to raise my voice higher than normal to be heard by my partner sitting only 3 feet away. The server came to take our drinks order, and this is where things started to sour slightly for me. As a steak fan, I am also a huge fan of a good red wine to go with it. I asked the server "What wines do you have?" her response..."Red, White and Rose" - I couldn't help but chuckle slightly, so I asked what reds she had, she didn't know. The first thing any server should know is what they are serving, what is available and how much it is, she knew none of these things and instead had to go across the restaurant to the till, to check. She came back to me there was a Shiraz, Malbec and Merlot - not exactly a billionaire's banquet as you can see, but I reluctantly got the Shiraz - it was vile. I then got a pint of some-thing or other, and that tasted lovely. Partner got a gin and a cider, and again, no complaints there. Next comes the food. Like so many, we had looked online to see what was available and had chosen our meal, when we arrived, very little of it was available and for a 'steakhouse' the choice was rather lacking. We looked at the "menu" - which was a small piece of white paper with some items on it and appeared to have seen better days. For an establishment as outwardly beautiful as this, it was a big let-down to be handed a flyer - rather ruins the atmosphere in my opinion. We both got a rump with all the trimmings and a calamari starter - no complaints there, food was lovely, steak was cooked to perfection and the trimmings were delicious even if the peppercorn was slightly too peppery for my tastes. We had a great time there listening to the slow atmospheric music which was being played - if rather loudly and paid for our meal. The meal came to around £80, which was more than reasonable for what we had. My last point of contention is with the server's behaviour as we left. We started to make our way over to the door to leave, and she barely looked up from her phone to say goodbye - found this rather rude considering there was no-one else in the restaurant. All in all, a rather mixed experience. I would go again, but I would sit in a different place and lower my expectations going forwards. Special mention to the chef however, as he was lovely and came to see how our food was - you don't see that nowadays and it was a welcome addition to our experience. Probably see you again on Valentine's Day The Hide, even if the experience wasn't an overwhelmingly positive one, I believe you can do better and I look forward to seeing you try.

Charged me £30 for a fillet with nothing with it coz I dont like salad or onion rings and wouldn't swap them for chips for free so at to pay extra £3 for chips with my meal. Told them I dont like salad aswell but still got it on my plate. And my chips come on same plate even tho I ordered them separately they put it on same plate so my fillet was not a show up on its own same with the salad just to make the meal look bigger when it was a joke. Did taste good tho and great service

Consistently excellent food! The halloumi fries were the best we've had. Also had chicken bites to start which were great. Both had the burger and mine was with pulled pork and cheddar! This was so filling and delicious. Eton mess for dessert which was also amazing! Great attentive staff. Just a shame it was so quiet in this restaurant. I don't know why this place doesn't get more custom.

Really disappointed. My partner was served a “bread board” as a starter and after eating a couple of rolls of bread, she was disgusted to find a large amount of mould on all the remaining bread rolls (and by mould I don’t just mean a little bit, the bottom of the rolls were completely covered in mould.) Upon seeing the mould, we called the waitress over and showed her the mould and she apologised immediately and took the food away. However, after this, we didn’t hear anything at all. We had to ask the waitress to speak to the manager about how on earth we could have been served mouldy bread. She did politely say that the manager was in the kitchen and had “sent his apologies”- apologies that we hadn’t received. The manager did then come out before our mains and assure us that all our mains were fresh. He said that the reason for the bread rolls being mouldy was because “they don’t sell many of them”. We were a large party, and most of us were put off our mains from the mould on the starter and meant we really didn’t enjoy our meals. My partner was that put off that she couldn’t eat her main. My girlfriend’s starter and main were not charged for, however no other reimbursement was offered. Since returning home, my partner has been throwing up ever since! I regret that upon seeing the mould we were that shocked we immediately called the waitress over before taking pictures and it was taken away. Our party of 12 were the only people in the restaurant, along with another small table of 3 and I’m really not surprised. I would definitely not recommend.

Sunday Lunch, well worth the visit. Will be going again.

We've has Sunday lunch here a number of times and never been disappointed. Well worth a visit, it's even cheaper on a week night.

Came in for Monday carvery, We was greeted by Zoe who made us feel welcome and is such a asset to catch penny. We ordered the beef dinner and when it came, she asked if everything was OK and if we needed any condiments. Overall on the dinner was satisfactory and definitely would come back again and will also be recommended to friends and family. Overall on the service we received was very delightful and Zoe is friendly and always happy and hardworking.

Could not fault any of the food we had at The Hide this evening, steaks were cooked to perfection and the service was attentive. Coeliac diet was well catered for, plenty of gluten free options from the main menu. Portions were very large, maybe too large and we couldn’t eat everything but felt it represented good value for money, will definitely return.

After waiting 50 mins for our Sunday dinner, it was only aired. Good food ,good variety, but a cold roast not good.

We went for lunch today and had to wait 50 mins for our food. It was presented quite good, plenty of well cooked veg, excellent variety BUT it was just aired. Most people were complaining . The people on the next table waited 1 hour for their food. They knocked us 20% off the bill but we didn't ask for it. When they asked us how the meal was ,we said lovely food but almost cold. They were still admitting people even though the kitchen couldn't cope.

We wanted to stay local but had heard mixed reviews but I’m glad we decided to give it a while and make up our own mind. The sirloin steak was absolutely delicious, the chips were beautiful and the Diane sauce was amazing.

Heard and read different reviews about the place, anyway we booked and went on 4-11-22 , the steaks were to be fair rubbish quality and just warm, paying city prices for poor quality food. The staff on duty and there where more of them than customers were too busy shouting and swearing at each other, all young people, no one in charge? Bar left unattended all the time we were there so had to wait for a break in the swearing to shout and ask for a drink ? We will not be visiting this venue again!

I was hopeful that we had a decent local restaurant but sadly not. The steaks weren’t cooked as we ordered them and they were cold. Everything including the sauce was lukewarm, honestly for £30 for a fillet steak I expect a decent meal - bear in mind the £30 does not include sides - its extra for frozen chips. Sirloin was fatty and the tomahawk was tough as vin diesel in fast and furious part 17. The staff - I’m sure they’re lovely people but when they’re all gathered around the kitchen area effing and jeffing in front of a family with a 12 year old in the party it’s unacceptable. Even if there were no kids in the party, they should be loudly telling each other to eff off. It felt like there was a bunch of teens running a restaurant. We won’t be back - no wonder we were the only customers on a Friday night - I’m sure people have been once never to return.

One of the best meals I've ever had the food was quality, the salmon was amazing my husband had the rump steak and he said the same as me just the best he's ever had, would recommend to everyone

Nice friendly atmosphere the food was excellent the best ive ever had a tad expensive but i dont mind paying for quality staff go above and beyond to make it as pleasant as possible

Wonderful place for a bite to eat or afternoon tipple. Be The restaurant is amazing. Food is always freshly cooked not like typical pub food. So much better.

The service staff were amazing, decor and general first impressions were great. Sadly the food let it down badly. Asked for a bread starter and honestly, Aldi bread is better, husband ordered the tomahawk steak and got pork( mistake by service staff) but the oven baked cod was dry and lacked flavour, seasonal veg was dry poorly prepped carrot, cabbage and broccoli. Sadly a real disappointment on the food front. Other than that service safe were Lovely and very apologetic… still wasted £60!! 🤦‍♀️

Went here yesterday and was very disappointed, only had sirloin steak no other steak on the menu, pub was very dated and food very under par, no disabled facilities, man shouting out his drug test came back clean so could see his kids, food at other side the same but cheaper, had to walk through to other pub for toilets, wouldn't recommend or return.

Had 2 steaks one rump and a sirloin cooked very well and rested nicely. Very tender if not slightly on the rare side but nothing wrong with that it was delicious 😋

A private function for sixty with a buffet and our own private view allowed us to meet in wonderful surroundings with great food and service.

We had such high hopes for this place based on the reviews we had read and the spiele on their website which boasted about specials boards with ostrich, bison and venison. Unfortunately the reviews and promise of specials did not match our experience... The specials.....didn't exist! They had a steak special and that was it?!? Why advertise a South African theme restaurant without the meats you promise?? No explanation, no sorry just that's all we are doing.... The starters We ordered belly pork bites and bread with oil and dips to share....the Bread was so hard and dry it crumbled..the beetroot chilli dip however was devine. The belly pork bites were stuck to the plate in a marinade that I could only describe tasted like Bovril with a crazy level if salt added. The mains I ordered a cheese and bacon burger with fries...I left over half of this meal, the burger meat was tasty although dry, and I never really bothered with the fries. My husband ordered the rump steak. When it came out it was cold...it also looked anaemic, god knows how they cooked it but it definately didn't look like it was cooked on a hot grill. We sent the steal back and rather then cooking a fresh steak, it was 'warmed' up and it was still only like warm. My husband ate it as he was hungry but it was nothing like it should have been...we had seen others steaks and they looked incredible, not ours. The service The young lad that was serving us was new and he was extremely polite, however he asked us 3 times if we were done with our starters while I was still eating.....I gave up. When taking the order for our mains I saw him write down our order in full, however moments before our mains were due he asked my husband if he was sure he didn't want chips with his steak to which we replied he had ordered chips....this lead to the steak being left stood while they rushed to cook chips. It was not a pleasant experience and one I definately won't be willing to undertake again. I do hope they make a success of their business but they have a lot to remedy in my eyes for that to occur.

Browsed TripAdvisor for a local decent restaurant and only realised this place was within the Catchpenny when searching the address on Google maps. Viewed the menu online and booked a table online as well. Upon arrival (Fri 6.30pm) found the place to be fairly quite. Lovely décor and staff were friendly and attentive. Starters inc. Pork Belly, Stuffed Mushrooms were great and the ribs were fantastic and just fell off the bone. Sirloin steaks for mains all cooked to requested perfection. Altogether an excellent meal. Felt sorry that the place was quiet for a Friday evening. Perhaps they need to advertise more locally and at the roadside? What a great place this is! A true hidden gem.

The Sunday lunch is delicious and is to be recommended. Portions offered in small or large with excellent selection of vegetables. Service is good with very pleasant and helpful staff.

Visited a couple of weeks ago. Wasn’t sure what to expect as I’d never heard of it, but the food was exceptional, a good price and will definitely be back.

Lovely ribeye steak. Partner had pork which says was lovely{would of been nice with crackling on} Great hidden gem. Only thing I'd say is the staff welcoming could of been better. Thought we'd walked into wrong place

Lovely meal for 4, steak, burger and belly pork. We couldn't fault the food or the service. This is our 2nd visit here and definitely won't be our last.

Excellent food and a nice decor. There was a lack of ambience as we came for lunch on a Saturday and we were the only people in the place when we arrive and when we left. I will definitely go back as the food is...

Great food, drink and ambiance. Nice to see the chef at work. Good family sized portions. We really enjoyed ourselves.

Browsing trip advisor for local places to eat I came across The Hide. Now, I’ve lived in Hemsworth and Fitzwilliam area for several years and not noticed this place tucked away down the side of the Catchpenny pub. Albeit it’s relatively new I can say...

The restaurant is beautifully decorated with a great vibe to it. The background music was lovely and at a comfortable volume to listen to and enjoy whilst still being able to hear each other. The service was excellent, fast and efficient with a friendly group...

Came to The Hide Steakhouse for the first time tonight ( we have eaten a number of times in the pub) but thought we would try the restaurant. We weren’t disappointed. The staff were great, couldn’t do enough for you. I have coeliac so need gluten free food. We ordered the gf light bites sharing platter to start with and can honestly say that these little dishes were the best we’ve ever had followed with the mains , one of steak and one of moules , absolutely delicious. I will be recommending The Hide to my friends and family. And we will definitely be coming back.

Visited with friends, had some lovely food and a very good and reasonably priced bottle of wine to go with it. Great addition to the area.

Had chefs burger and wife had ribs. Ribs bit dry and chewy but still fell off bone. Burger was amazing. Told staff about ribs (had too do it Happy wife happy life) staff very sincere, offering free drink or pudding. But I was happy with service. Nice place. Thank you

Had a meal for Father's day it was lovely

We were disappointed as we had looked at the menu online and decided what we wanted (and it seems we weren't the only ones) The menu had changed and there wasn't really anything we wanted. 16oz Ribeye is way too much for most people and onion puree isn't bacon mash. Desserts were lovely, wine good but expensive. Won't be returning any time soon, which is sad as we live in the area.

Absolute hidden gem of Wakefield. Had two meals from the steak house, both were absolutely fantastic. I'm still trying to get my head round how it's so empty at the minute. It's attached to the Catch Penny Pub!

Absolutely beautiful food and very accommodating they let me order off the other menu with more vegan options . I had a vegan starter and main and they were both amazing and the presentation was like eating at a very expensive restaurant. My partner and kids had non vegan food and the presentation was just as good and their feedback was that the flavour was top notch. I would 100% recommend for anyone looking to eat out locally and would even encourage people to travel to eat here. I will be returning and thank you for a warm atmosphere and again beautiful food.
