The Hewlett in Cheltenham

We ocassionally stay in Cheltenham for crat markets and pop into The Hewlett for a pint. We booked a table last night as we also wanted food and it was excellent. A tapas type starter of holumi chips with a chilli jam and, some fried mushrooms with aoli. This was followed by slow cooked brisket with mash - absolutely delicious. Pint of Bath Ales Gem and bottle of rioja. A particularly excellent part of the evening was the service. The two lads behind the bar, taking food orders and serving were exceptional- the place was very busy and they were managing all of it very professionally and with good humour. Well done The H - great team and products.

Had a fantastic Sunday lunch spent with family. Amazing friendly service, they couldn’t do more for us. Food was delicious, so recommended. Wonderful atmosphere. Special thanks to Ellie for being so attentive. Thank you Hewlett 😘

The Hewlett is a friendly family run business that’s takes pride in their pub and lovely relaxing beer garden, they have over head heaters on in the outside dining areas which is very welcome in the winter evenings. The food is of a very high standard and they cater for any occasion , everything is spotlessly clean and tidy, we will definitely be back again soon even if we do have to travel over 200 miles to get there 😁

Went on a Sunday night Person behind the bar was rude Never called last orders so I was sat there with no drink as the bar was closed and who I was with still had 3/4 of a pint left When I asked why he didn't call last orders he said I never do as I should have known they close at 10 which I didn't as never been there before and more than likely won't I said I didn't know and he said o well not my problem and turned his back and walked away And with being a landlady myself it's not a good way to deal with customers

We booked the Hewlett for a family gathering after a funeral held at the local crematorium. It’s literally a stone throw away and easy, free parking either in the road or in their car park. Mei helped us choose a suitable buffet menu and we made all the arrangements with her help. The food was excellent, the staff were very efficient and the area they reserved for us was perfect for our family. We also had lunch here whilst planning for the wake and that was also excellent. Everything was reasonably priced and good quality.

Came here after a busy day at work, served really quickly by a friendly member of staff, who took our drinks and food order. Two friends ordered their burgers with mac and cheese which I thought was odd but when it came out I was jealous 😁 Lots of crispy cheesyness! Love coming here, lush food, friendly staff cannot fault it.

We spend a week in Cheltenham each March during the racing festival. We first discovered this pub about ten years ago when staying close by. Since then ‘being near the Hewlett’ has been our first consideration when renting a house nearby. The food, drink and welcome is exceptional and Emma and Paul and the team have over the years become good friends. They also have 2 x v nice bedrooms above the pub. This is a gem of a pub and always my first port of call when in Cheltenham.

A reasonable distance from the centre of Cheltenham and at the foot of airy Harp Hill is the Hewlett. A warm interior and a nice garden outside, and good drinks too. The Sunday roasts looked excellent and I expect to try these another time. Staff were efficient and friendly.

Excellent place to start our visit to Cheltenham Town football match. Friendly staff, good food and well kept beer. Well worth a visit.

Always a favourite for a Sunday Roast. Huge portion that’s a good price and tastes so good! Staff are helpful and friendly and it’s such a nice vibe. Highly recommend!

Booked in for Sunday roast, very disappointed at the food offering. Rock hard broccoli, carrots (which may or may not have been tinned but we’re definitely too salty), watery gravy, Yorkshire which didn’t seem to be home made and two, yep two, roast potatoes. Miserly portion for the £15/£17 paid. Mentioned politely to the waitress about the rock hard broccoli, said oh ok I will be back and she didn’t come back. Didn’t check if anything else was ok with our meal and started to clear plates whilst one of our party was eating. My friend asked a simple question, was the pie an all round pastry encased pie or a pie in a dish with a puff top? This was met with the response, it’s a pie, eventually she decided to go back to the kitchen to ask but sadly she’d already set the tone with her sarcastic remark. Avoid for Sunday lunch, whilst pleasant staff, they clearly lack basic manners in terms of table waiting and the ability to deal with polite criticism. Clearly this is the reason why they were so quiet and could for us in on a Sunday. We won’t be back.

A really friendly and welcoming pub with great food, ales and wines. We visit every year when we're down for 4 days at the Cheltenham Festival, and Emma, Paul and all the staff make us feel completely at home. Just left after another superb week and we can't wait to come back again. By far the best pub in Cheltenham.

Had a great, relaxing Saturday afternoon pint and food here with our family of 4. Really tasty small plates that everyone could enjoy - along with some cold cider! Staff were friendly and efficient. Couldn’t do enough to make sure we were looked after.

Visited today having seen the pub featured on BBC Points West. + points. Nice interior comfy seating and very impressive beer garden with heated pods. - points. Walked in Landlady was customer side of the bar on her phone made no attempt to speak and make us welcome. Only one other person in pub and given that she was recently complaining that she was facing £8000 a year increase in fuel costs would it not be better if she cut her costs and served behind the bar herself?The barman didn’t know how to pull a pint and our beer was flat. Shame because this pub has potential I would suggest the landlady pops over to Gloucester to the Fountain Inn and observes how the staff/ management treat customers.

The original venue let us down 48 hours before my Mother in laws funeral and Sam at The Hewlett did Everything he could to accommodate us and our needs at the impossibly sad and frustrating time

We had visited the Hewlett previously for a family get together for a Sunday lunch and we were very pleased. We thought we would visit mid week during a Wednesday lunchtime. The opening hours for the kitchen are advertised as 12 until 2pm. We tried to order a light lunch at 1.50 to be told that the kitchen was closed. When checking with the bar staff as it was before the 2pm deadline, we were then told the kitchen closes at 1.45pm to clear the kitchen! Surely the times advertised should be altered to clearly show that last orders are 1.45pm! It was difficult to give an order generally as the barman was constantly on his mobile phone away from the bar, so that no food or drink orders could be taken! Very disappointing!

Whilst staying in Cheltenham we wanted somewhere close to the hotel to eat. It was Saturday night and although very busy we managed to get a booking at the Hewlett. It is what I would describe as a real local pub, lots of regulars and very friendly welcoming staff.. As a previous reviewer stated, the menu was limited with burgers or tapas, but we had the tapas and thoroughly enjoyed what we had. The pub was busy and there was a little wait, but I have to congratulate the staff for the service and their commitment.

The food itself was well cooked and presented but the menu wasn't great - tapas or burgers. We didn't want burgers so it had to be tapas. As I said, they were nicely done but it's an expensive way to eat. Please bring back a proper pub menu, ideally including the lamb ragu, which was ace!

Had a meal for six of us on Saturday night in one of the outside booths. Had burgers and a steak. Everyone loved their meals. Best burgers, freshly cooked. The chocolate brownie went down well with the kids. Lovely to enjoy a great pint with family. Great service. Will be back soon.

Great dog friendly pub with great food. I’d read a previous review as I was looking for a nice place to take my son as I was visiting him in Cheltenham, but I have 3 dogs, so not always easy. The girl behind the bar was extremely helpful and made us feel very at home. The food was very nice. I’ll happily go back when we next visit my son. If you want a lovely pub (and you have dogs), then head here! Many thanks.

Thanks for a fantastic meal when we visited on the 8th September. The fish and chips were amazing and the burger and pork chops equally so. Sitting in the booths outside in the sunshine made social distancing easy too!

Fantastically friendly service, lovely outside seating area and delicious ciabattas. The grilled chicken, gherkin and mustard mayo ciabatta was superb. First visit but will be back again for sure.

Having just moved to the area,I thought I would pop in for lunch. Very friendly welcome at a lovely pub. I had the pulled lamb shepherds pie which was very tasty with great mash and rich gravy. Great place and will definitely return.

15 of us went down for breakfast before the November Meeting. The team are absolutley brilliant, food was great, superb atmosphere. We will be here again in 2020 as it's the best place we have been to in the 5 years of going. Thanks guys.

Hamburguesa casera y no llena de grasa! ! ¡No puedo esperar para volver y decirles a mis amigos lo increíble que fue!

We arranged a reception following a family funeral at Cheltenham Crematorium (it's only a couple of minutes away.) The cost was very reasonable, the staff were very pleasant and helpful and they produced a pleasant, interesting buffet which was nicely presented. All-in-all, a great success. So, thank you, the Hewletts Arms!

We sat in one of the outdoor garden pods in September and chose really nice healthy meal options, good salads really tasty chicken thigh and lentil and bean based meals instead of chips padding them out, great alternative to traditional stodge. The outdoor heaters on timer buttons are a good eco-idea and great to have USB charger points out there too. We were disappointed that there was no food service when we returned in November 2019, due to a private 60th birthday function, but the staff were pleasant in giving us the news, shame the pub doesn't extend upstairs! We'll call by another time and we always recommend it to guests visiting for the races, for a lazy mid morning breakfast

Lovely dog friendly pub that we visit about once a month despite it not being our closest pub. We‘ve even had business meetings here before! Gorgeous food, friendly staff, plenty of tables, good car parking and a nice garden. It’s a Christmas tradition to go for drinks or Christmas Eve at the Hewlett and we all look forward to it. Arrived from Cheltenham crematorium and welcomed by lovely friendly staff. There was a delicious buffet nicely presented on arrival and was glad to have a cold drink. Just had a family reunion in Cheltenham. Looking forward to going back to the Hewlett arms as we held family reunions there in the past. Staff were very friendly and the service was fine. However the food was terrible and expensive. We did complain with no results other than the comment "will let the chef know" As you can imagine we will find elsewhere for further reunions.

Vinimos como un gran grupo familiar de 7 personas. El camarero estuvo atento a nuestras necesidades (un producto lácteo y otro gluten y productos lácteos tolerantes) al verificar dos veces los alérgenos. La comida tardó un poco, pero era un viernes por la noche y bastante concurrida. Un par de cosas estaban en mal estado en el pedido y el camarero fue muy rápido para rectificar esto rápidamente y nos dejó la comida equivocada original para compartir nuestra entre nosotros. Supongo que fue una especie de disculpa y de todos modos disfruté. La hamburguesa de casablanca estaba deliciosa!

Mi familia y yo cenamos aquí a menudo y nunca hemos tenido una mala experiencia y la selección de comida / platos es muy buena. El personal es extremadamente agradable y es un placer tratar con ellos.

Wednesday night is burger night. Burger and a pint for a tenner, can not go wrong. Delicious. Staff are fabulous as well. 100% will return. A must try

It's been quite a while since I have visited this pub even though it's not very far from home, primarily because it only serves a limited range of real ales. It has clearly had a facelift not so long ago, so looks very smart now but perhaps a bit lacking in character

After looking for somewhere to eat and that would also let us take our dog, we found this charming pub a short walk from our apartment.

5th February, disappointed, we have been to the Hewlett, numerous times over the years. Recently the pub/ restaurant has been repainted and to be fair it’s looking very very nice! In the past the food has be varied and exceptionally good but our meal was very poor for us all! The pub/restaurant seems to be concentrating on burgers, those burgers that are 150mm high with wooden skewers keeping the bun and filling together, our food was not freshly made! We understand that it’s pub grub but disappointing and overpriced to our taste. We are not into burgers for special evenings out, or we could have gone to Mc Donald’s

Gran cerveza, personal encantador y grandes mejoras en la última reforma. Uso liberal en alto volumen de las palabras f y c; Principalmente por personas que están aquí con sus hijos! La multitud habitual. Debe renovar a algunos de los clientes, ya que esto matará a cualquier cliente nuevo que venga de nuevo.

The pub itself was pleasant enough and the staff were friendly but the food was only average. The menu was very limited but there was a wide selection of burgers which is fine if you are a fan of burgers.

Haven’t been here for a while and we were greatly impressed with everything - the staff were really friendly and helpful, food was delicious, my husband loved the ale selection....and a fantastic outdoor area with cubby holes to sit in. We will definitely be back here, well worth a visit.

Attended a birthday party for a close friend. Staff could not have been more helpful. Was able to reserve tables inside and booths outside - which have charging points! Food was really good quality burgers chicken and vegetarian option all went down well. Definitely recommended.

The Hewlett has really improved over the last year or so. Now has trendy interior with excellent pub menu. The beer garden is the reason to go and this summer it has been buzzing in the early evening hot weather. Lots of fun evening activities often organised so look out for a treat.

Had been a while ago and decided to meet family members here again. Great selection of drinks and food albeit normal pub fare. Friendly efficient service. Reasonably priced. Portions not large but sufficient. Parking in the car park is limited and snug to say the least if yer car is long / wide i.e. not a mini!. Other parking on the road though. Plenty of seating inside and out. If weather bad then there are a few covered tables with own heaters. Decoration is a bit dated inside but that is being rather picky! Well worth a special trip and we will return when next in Cheltenham.

A huge thank you to all of the guys at the Hewlett for making my wife’s surprise bday bbq a fantastic day despite the rain. I cannot speak highly enough about the staff and the quality of food. From organising to delivery they made my wife’s day , which also means I am in the good books for now. I don’t often write reviews but had to comment. Andy organised a great day and Rosie and the guys were always on hand in the day and were just amazing. My friends have not stopped talking about the quality of the food either so thanks chef! Can not recommend enough!

This is a nice pub with a lovely atmosphere. The meals, although above average in price and the portions are small, are delicious and well presented. If the portion sizes were bigger they'd be perfect, just stop scrimping on the fries!

My husband and I were visiting from Canada; we were staying at a B&B; and wanted someplace within walking distance, so we tried The Hewlett. We loved it! Even though it was sunny, we chose to eat inside, near an open wall. The service was wonderfully friendly, and our fish and chips and burger were both very good. The best thing was the atmosphere—even as strangers we felt very comfortable, and enjoyed a lovely evening meal.

A lovely decorated pub with kind and friendly staff. Ideal place to go and have a few quiet beers with friends. Food is available, but didn't try it on this occasion.

We wanted to sit outside and have a light lunch, sitting outside and with parking nearby.

I'd eaten just a couple of hours earlier so opted for something from the starter menu. Absolute monster starter. Delighted. Good quality food. Looked around at the burgers that were being brought to neighbouring tables and looked quality. Will absolutely be heading back soon to sample one. I genuinely have a large appetite and could not fault the food.

The venue was very busy and noisy with after work drinkers. The staff were friendly and helpful. Not a great choice for vegetarians but what we had was cooked to order and nicely presented.

Recently had a few drinks here and a meal after having had a day at the races. We usually call in here when we travel to Cheltenham as it is near our guest house. Pub was quite busy outside as the weather was lovely. Good choice of drinks and service good despite being busy. Food is good though personally I would like the portions to be a bit bigger (but that is probably me being greedy as my father in law couldn't finish his). Food is very well presented. I had the fish n chips though I did notice others having burgers which looked very nice. We will no doubt visit again when we return to Cheltenham in October.

Over-cooked and bland vegetable curry with very little substance to contrast with the soggy rice!!!!

I booked the Hewlett originally on the 3rd March for my dads 80th Birthday and because of the weather conditions it was unable to happen but the owner Emma was very accommodating in helping me move things around and we eventually made it happen yesterday even though the weather was yet again against us. I would like to give Andy the manager and his team a big thank you for the amazing service and the excellent food they gave us you helped to make the day a roaring success for my Dad. Absolutely brilliant 5 star rating from me.

We had the pleasure of finding this pub due to our accommodation for the Cheltenham festival being over the road from it. What a super pub! We use the pub often - usually when we can't be bothered to cook as it is near to us.

My friend and I went to The Hewlett for a catch up on burger night, what a bargain! I had the New York Deli and my friend the Tennessee Bourbon, both came with chips sweet potato or regular and a pint. £20 for the 2 of us, so we stayed for an extra drink or two it was so popular we had to wait a short while for a seat, so booking is advisable. Service was swift and staff were friendly. Highly recommend.

First the bad stuff ordered a tex mex burger and chips took 50 minutes to come out. That’s sometime for a simple meal. The bottom of the burger was a little wet could be the salad? But the burger was dry. Could possibly be a combination of the lack chuck steak and overlooking if they are hand made. The staff could smile some more which is important to some people! The chips were also decent frozen not skin on fries etc....

Dodgy dude will impose himself upon your group, tell you he is going to give you his opinion on your private conversation, pet and feed your dog without asking and complain that he has to clean the pub. It's a shame because it's a great pub otherwise, but this guy has ruined it for us.

Visited for the first time with some friends recently. Unfortunately the first impression wasn't great as the pub garden is looking quite neglected and doesn't give the best impression.

Tuvimos un maravilloso almuerzo de domingo en la Hewlett. El personal era atento y muy amable, la cerveza era excelente y la comida era excelente. Todos optamos por el asado, dos de nosotros sólo verduras, y todos comentábamos lo bien preparada (No preparado) que era. Sin duda volvería si en la zona.

Parado en el sábado por la tarde después de Hewlett un evento en Cheltenham, primera visita, y pasé un par de horas sentados en una agradable una de las cabinas de madera limpia y agradable a un lado del jardín. Muy buena que tienen conexión USB, tomas de corriente, toque el botón y la iluminación calentadores al aire libre! Así que podía cargar mi teléfono. Tenía un par de entrantes como aperitivos antes de ir a casa - impresionado con el chorizo y queso ensalada de pimiento rojo de presentación. El personal era luminoso y agradable. Buena variedad de cerveza y cervezas. Sin duda nos volveríamos de nuevo pop Es un pub urbano en una zona residencial, otra clientela parecía bonito y luminoso, una mezcla de grupos de familias y parejas, y una vez en el jardín estás en un buen rincón, lejos de la carretera. Aparcamiento para 10 coches o en la calle. Comentario hasta ahora para la atención está en el Ladies loos; muy bien presentado, pero podría haber una ventana de apertura para la ventilación. Poco a humedad - parte integrante de edificios antiguos no descuidado.

Vivimos cerca de la Hewlett y decidimos ir a tomar un almuerzo en familia. Éramos 6 de nosotros. Había muchas mesas por dentro y por fuera. Las bebidas y las comidas eran ordenados y pagado en el bar. Las comidas eran caliente y estaba buenísimo. Los miembros de la familia todos elegimos comidas diferentes y las comidas todos trajeron a la mesa al mismo tiempo. Excelente.

Teníamos dos comidas, un viernes 12 de mayo, y una en sábado 13 de mayo ya estábamos cerca. La comida y el servicio fueron excelentes. Ambos tuvimos las hamburguesas en viernes y sábados, los filetes de las comidas eran bien caliente. El personal era muy amable y el precio era razonable.

I ordered the asparagus arancini. It was very good. Service was a tad slow; the place is busy. Food presentation is excellent!

Its hard to find good pub food at a fair price but The Hewlett delivers. We live a short walk away so have been a few times and love it there. The only problem is their serving times seem to be a bit all over the place. Worth having a look online before making the trip.

Called in for race week breakfast, really good value breakfast, nice staff, great atmosphere with other race goers, busy but not to busy quick service, cracking place before a day's racing!
