Montpellier Wine Bar in Cheltenham

I had the farmhouse chicken dish, was one of the best dishes I’ve had at a restaurant. Amazing service and atmosphere. Really recommend.

I have known the wine bar and drunk in there many many years and in fairness since they re-opened following refurbishment the staff have been excellent. But what have they done with the acoustics in there? Whatever changes that have been made (large section above the bar removed) it is now virtually impossible for me to hear anything my friends are saying, even when they are right beside me. In addition it would seem that the cheapest bottle of wine on the menu now will set you back circa 30 quid. Sorry wine bar, loyal as I have been over some 20 years that relationship is now over until prices change and something is done about the obtrusive echo.

We like the wine bar - our one negative is about the front door, please close it rather than having it propped open. We are always cold when we are in here and it puts us off. People can see you are open!

Great wine bar with a good selection of wines. The Canadian landlady was very knowledgeable in recommending wines and was so lovely and friendly. Spotlessly clean (including toilets) and a good mix of clientele. Downstairs is being gutted to make way for a restaurant which sounds great. We will definitely be back when in Cheltenham.

Went here after years, paid for a small glass of wine, the bar staff spilt some on the counter when decanting it from the measure when challenged she just said that’s a small glass!!! Then when talking to a friend stood beside me chatting about how it has changed a member of staff butted in and said ‘ you don’t have to be here ‘ I am aware of this but really no wonder there wasn’t many people there.

Amazing place. We loved the decor and the layout, the gentle jazz playing and the great service. Now nice to be able to chat while enjoying a very mellow and peaceful environment. Our server even offered us a choice of glasses for our champagne. Never had that before!

Excellent little bar, warm and welcoming. Service was great with upbeat positive happy staff. Smart upmarket crowd. Will certainly visit again when in Cheltenham.

In short very disappointing, not sure where to begin. Inattentive, unprofessional staff, amusing themselves with their phones or the drunks in the bar. A noisy, unpleasant atmosphere, the doorman was required to remove people, suspect this is a regular occurrence. Sadly the mediocre refurbishment has not been extended to the rather grubby toilets. A beer and a glass of wine was over £16 …..

Called in on our way back from a shopping trip. Unfortunately the bore at the bar who was very drunk at 5pm made it a very unpleasant visit. If I want to hear repeated 4 letter words spoken extra loud in a slurred drunken voice I will probably stick to the football not an establishment trying to portray itself as an upmarket wine bar. What was even more unfortunate was it was tolerated and encouraged by the 2 bar staff. Never again and would advise against a visit.

Re-opened after a long shut down and a refurbishment. Looks fantastic, clean and a nice place to go for a couple of drinks. Prices similar to Harry cook and all bar one. Nice pint of madri on tap..thats good enough for me

This place has had a quality refurbishment and is looking stylish. I'm looking forward to the kitchen opening.

The Montpellier wine bar sounds upmarket and classy - it was once but now it’s a dirty hole - I don’t get it. Prime spot, great building - I have no idea what the owners are thinking. I guess it will go bust as it’s always pretty empty now - I went for drinks and there is no way I would consider eating there. Such a shame

It just gets worse, how sad. The owner has no interest other than charging top prices. Sign outside reads "fine dining" NO, no chef and no food for months. "Cocktails" NO haven't done them for ages. Dirty ladies toilet, feet stick to the floor and basins dirty. Outside umbrella broken. Photos attached. I could go on and on. Message to the owner - please either improve or sell it and let someone else do it.

Great place for a coffee or a cocktail.

Our family party of four was threatened by an apparently drunken man. He was particularly rude to the women in the party. The staff did nothing to help.

Oh dear where does one start? Perhaps I had better not except to say what was once a very nice proper wine bar that served lovely food downstairs is now beyond recognition. Staff need full training - place needs fully cleaning and the owners and management need to look at the reasons why this place has no customers Our visit for a pre Christmas get together was disastrous - wrong drinks served - staff couldn’t care less and gents toilet minging

We went for early dinner with our children. Arrived at 6.20pm for a drink in the bar. There was one other couple there, and then one table of very loud, very roudy, very drunk 50/60 odd years middle aged men. The bar was lined with the same again, though they weren't as roudy. The roudy table made us feel uncomfortable staying in the bar - the singing and shouting was so loud that we decided to move to the downstairs restaurant ten minutes early. There were no staff and no customers in the restaurant the 1.5 hours we were there. A waiter eventually arrived to take our orders - he was very polite and did a good job. The food was nice, and the setting is lovely. There were no other diners at all, so no atmosphere. The roudy shouting and singing continued throughout our meal. We had our courses as it was for our son's 20th birthday, but left the moment the last mouthful was eaten. It's a shame as we'd originally planned to go back to the bar for drinks. We did mention to the female partner of the owner/landlord/waiter (her description) as to why we were rushing off. When we were upstairs we saw no attempts for the landlord to quieten down the table, and they certainly continued throughout our stay. Montpellier Wine Bar used to be packed out - now its practically empty, and attracting clientele who'd be asked to leave anywhere else. We won't return. I've given two stars as the waiter was very pleasant and the food was nice.

Why does the owner think keep increasing the prices will attract more customers. Andrew, highest price bar in Cheltenham does not mean you will be the busiest. You have a very competent and experienced manager and chef, build on your local and regular customer trade, rather than get greedy and charge very high prices. Many of your customers do not return. If you want a steady trade and increase the number of people dining look at other bars/restaurants close by. Why are they so busy and you are empty? Sensible prices and value for money. Ripping off your regular customers means they have gone elsewhere.

Can’t praise highly enough -service spot on, gorgeous food cooked with respect and flair, fair price for champagne - host is charming - what more do you want ? Only wish I lived locally - would be a regular.

Stopped here for a coffee and although the setting is lovely, service was good, the coffee was awful. The coffee was replaced but again it was very average.

What a disgrace of a bar. Dirty, bad service and appalling food. The owner has a reputation and that clearly shows. No staff respect him and neither do his customers. Horrible man with a horrible business. No wonder it’s only running on empty. Gordon Ramsey should do a show on this abomination of an establishment.

A group of seven booked for a business dinner and as it was hot, sat outside which as very pleasant. The service was chaotic though starting with an order for four San Miguel beers only for the waitress to reappear 5 mins later to say the tap for San Miguel was broken so we ordered 4 different beers. 2 mins later a different waitress arrived with our 4 San Miguels. We asked to cancel the previous order but of course, 5 mins later they turned up. We then ordered starters and main courses. 20 mins later my main course turned up! We asked where our starters were and half an hour later they turned up, though the waitress did not know what they were so had to go back to find out the names of the starters. The wine we ordered arrived 10 minutes after the starters but no glasses. We had finished our starters by the time the glasses arrived. We had to explain that we needed both red and white glasses for the wine. The main courses arrived, among them were four steaks however the waitress did not know which were medium, rare, well-done etc or which were rump and which were sirloin, etc. I had ordered 3 portions of onion rings but were told " I forgot to say we are out of onion rings" The sauces we ordered with the steaks were also 'out' except for mushroom sauce. We had finished our steaks before the mushroom sauce arrived. The steaks were terrible, mainly from waiting around for various accompaniments. Afterwards we asked to see the sweet menu with about 8 different options but were then told they only had ice cream. Ice cream was ordered but we were then told the flavours we ordered weren't available, only vanilla and chocolate. The evening was a joke and in the end we just laughed but it was anything but funny. A bill for £378 and they had a cheek to ask for a tip. They were disappointed and that is the first time in 30 years I have not tipped. Stay away, it is not a nice place.

Montpellier wine bar was always known to be an upbeat/ popular place but unfortunately has fallen way below standards. The service is slow, the food is very mediocre, it’s unhygienic and I have heard that the owner (Andrew) treats his staff with no respect and does not pay them their wages - ultimately resulting in numerous amounts of staff walking out. This therefore has a massive impact on the business running slowly. The whole place has a bad atmosphere and quite frankly could do with a makeover (including the owner). Do not waste your money and time going to this place. Plenty of other modern/ upcoming bars and restaurants in Cheltenham with brilliant food, polite staff and good energy.

We've been coming to the wine bar on and off for several years and have always been happy to do so, until recently. The last visit a few days ago was the last we will be making for the forseeable future. The plates were cold, the beer (ale) selection was reduced and uninspiring, the fat chips, which previously were always really good, were too fat and more like wedges and soggy rather than crispy. The pea soup (which is what the mushy peas/puree amounted to) was minute as was the portion of brown sauce for which they had the cheek to charge me £2.50. Something has clearly changed, either in the ownership or the management, as confirmed by the other recent reviews. We were almost the only customers for a midweek lunch. Seems like we are not the only people to have noticed that things are not as they were.

Sat waiting for ten minutes for a drink while staff nearby ignored all attempts to be served. Faded, like an old cinema.

One of the best bars in Cheltenham. The food and service is excellent - Management and staff are always welcoming, efficient, and happy. I would recommend to anyone looking for somewhere to go for food and drink in Cheltenham.

Distanciamiento social en su lugar. Con track and trace, gel y sistema unidireccional a inodoros. Servicio de mesa. No habíamos reservado, pero se encontró la mesa. Los Bloody Marys eran muy buenos, los mejores que he tenido en mucho tiempo. Pedimos algunos platos pequeños para incluir un deslizador de ternera y carrilleras de cerdo, pastel de pescado de salmón bueno con hojuelas de salmón adecuadas. La cerveza real también era muy buena

Visité Cheltenham recientemente, fui aquí dos veces para tomar algo como cerca del hotel. La primera vez fue encantadora, las reglas de Covid seguidas por el personal se sintieron muy seguras. La segunda vez que entramos, era obvio que el propietario estaba con un grupo de amigos, claramente todos de diferentes hogares y debió haber estado allí la mayor parte del día, ¡ya que parecían bastante borrachos! Tres de ellos caminaban sin máscara hablando con otras mesas y parados junto a la barra, tampoco eran jóvenes, así que deberían saberlo mejor y el dueño no hizo nada.Es una pena porque es un pequeño bar agradable y me dio pena que el personal tuviera que lidiar con eso.

Good selection of drinks and reasonable prices.

Llegué aquí después de reservar una mesa para almorzar con amigos para la Copa Oro. Qué desastre. No hay mesa reservada por lo que el personal sabía! Reservamos en enero y habíamos pagado un depósito. Gerente desinteresado. Este es probablemente el día más ocupado del año y se sentó en el bar mirando su computadora portátil durante la mayor parte de la tarde. La comida es horrible y la gente del bar ha trabajado allí durante un promedio de una semana y deambulaba sin ninguna guía. No tengo idea de lo que ha pasado, pero todos los demás bares en Montpellier están embestidos. Este lugar solo tenía algunas personas fuertes listas para una pelea alimentada por el alcohol. Oh how this bar has fallen nobody seems to drink there .. They have closed on Mondays due lack of punters Was a good place to people watch now if you want a quite drink go you will be the only one there..

Was staying nearby in Cheltenham and our friends had recommended this little spot. Was very close to our hotel and in nice area of the city so visited for some drinks. Drinks were fine and bar was classy, but staff were uninterested borderline snootyA bit of a disappointment I’m sure there are better bars nearby

I do not rate this place at all. It needs a complete overhaul, new staff too. I would not recommend this bar, I would prefer to go to Door 4, John Gordans, even Harry Cook's

Came here both Friday and Saturday evening, pleasant time and also close to the hotel we were staying in

A gentle autumn sun, a table outside, this is the place to see 'all' of Cheltenham go by. delightful friendly staff, good service, a delicious quinoa & avacado salad accompanied by an acceptable glass of vino.n.b. much better than when we were there some time ago.

We had booked a table for 7pm on Friday, only to find there didn't seem to be anyone eating in the restaurant bit downstairs. So we offered a seat upstairs nears the bar. It was a bit nippy with the door open but nonetheless whilst not seeming to be the most professional of establishments, I had the steak which was really lovely, cooked to perfection and tasted excellent. For dessert I had the sticky toffee pudding which was also good.

He estado aquí dos domingos corriendo. El primero fue hace un par de semanas para la feria de Montpellier y nuevamente ayer para el día de diversión de Montpellier. Este lugar solía estar tan lleno que no se podía sentar afuera, pero en estas dos ocasiones casi no había nadie. Es un buen lugar para observar a la gente. No puedo entender por qué tan pocas personas.

A donde se han ido todos los modales, los muchachos salen de los autos dejando a la chica para salir y todo por teléfono. Las bebidas están bien, pero el wacthing es el gran atractivo. . .

Ordered a warm chicken and avocado salad, it was fried cut up chicken goujons in bread crumbs and two wafer thin small slices of avocado with chopped lettuce cover in grated cheese, I couldn’t actually eat it

We decided to try Sunday Lunch at the Wine Bar last weekend. The Wine Bar is perfectly nice inside and we received a warm welcome. From a food perspective there was a traditional roast beef sunday lunch on the menu. It was large and delicious. We paired this with a quite lovely bottle of red. There was excellent music playing in the background which the staff took the time to tell us what the music was when we asked. All in all a lovely experience and we will probably be there again very soon for another Sunday Lunch at a very reasonable price. I genuinely don't understand some of the recent reviews.

Good place with great beers, live music and great service' a winner every time we go which is every time in town.

This was our second visit to this great wine bar/ restaurant. We had pre-booked our breakfast for 10.30 on Gold Cup day, we arrived a little late because of traffic, on our arrival we were greeted by the lovely Lisa who looked after us (5 hungry & thirsty guys), our breakfast was served without delay and the Guinness kept on coming. We had a fantastic time and went back for more after the races. Lisa and the other young ladies were fantastic, they made our day/night experience at the bar more memorable and we will return next year.

Spent a lovely afternoon in the Montpellier Wine Bar with friends - watching the racing on TV and soaking up the atmosphere. The staff were very attentive and the food was delicious Highly recommended

I visited Montpellier Wine Bar . during race week. I pre booked a table for lunch with friends, the food was delicious with first class waitress and bar service. They couldn't do enough for you. The staff were very friendly. I would definitely recommend to others.

This was the top place to go when the races are on.. Drinks and staff working hard to please us all.. What i saw of the food it look OK..

Food used to be ok but having eaten here this weekend, I can honestly say this is one of the worst places to eat in cheltenham.

A rudderless ship. Very badly run. Staff change weekly. A total how not to exercise. Who ever is not running this place needs a good kick up the backside. Has potential to be wonderful if someone could be bothered to take an interest. Please wake up and run the place properly.

Sadly this place is going downhill. We have used the bar a lot over the years but the last month or so it’s been poor. Main issues poor untrained staff and bad quality of the Cask ales.

I have used the Montpellier Wine Bar for many years for numerous lunchtime appointments. In doing so I feel that I am 'qualified' to write this review.

You get a certain crowd in here. The beer is hit and miss. The wine slightly better. Food also is ok. There is a large downstairs seating area for dining. The toilets also downstairs, so beware if you are using a wheelchair.

If like us you thought this place was upmarket,then think again.

Just been for lunch here. It was a bit quiet to start with and the manager had to shift his paperwork to let us sit down but after that it all went smoothly. Drinks menu is twice the length of the food menu which gives you an indication of the culinary delights on offer. But what they served was very nice (Fish & chips were) and the chocolate brownie was worth the wait. Would probably come back for drinks but look elsewhere for a greater choice of food

At first glance the food looked too cheap but the headline price is the basic dish that will usually require an extra or two. Still very good food and very good value well presented and well cooked, delightful staff and excellent wine. My only small criticism would be that I would not expect Mediterranean Vegetables to be very peppery. I imagined they were southern Europe rather than north Africa but maybe I should not have assumed.

Fantastic atmosphere, great service in spite of how busy it was. Proecco served at just the right temperature and good price for such a classy wine bar in an upmarket place like Montpellier.

Fantastic bar with a welcoming vibe - we sat outside even though the weather wasn’t too great and people watched! Staff were friendly and attentive. We tried the small plates which were just perfect after a morning spent shopping with the Mrs!

We liked it so much we returned the next afternoon what a fantastic little place really enjoyed the food especially the Sunday roast 👍 well done and looking forward to our next visit.

The turnover of staff at the Wine Bar is alarming - WHY? Perhaps look at the attitude of the owner - very abrupt, loud and rude to staff and customers. Very inappropriate the way he talks to his staff, in fact he shouts not talks orders. Have seen staff in tears before now. Three chefs in three weeks - manager left last week, what more do I have to say? Menu shrinking by the day (sometimes not available at all). Won't be going back again.

Great little bar...it was absolutely buzzing following the races on Saturday night. Great bar staff....very friendly and efficient.

Convenient location in Montpellier, with a decent pint, nice atmosphere and cosmopolitan clientele. Bar service was friendly and I believe they serve decent pub grub too.

Encontré este pequeño bar al caminar por el distrito. ¡Parado por una copa de vino y un mordisco tardío! Me encantó el pan de pita de cordero y también probé el pollo chili de mi compañero (que era delicioso, aunque necesitaba algo para acompañarlo). El servicio era bueno y si hubiera sido más cálido hubiera sido encantador para relajarse fuera.

We stopped off here with friends for a cheeky one for the road and had a fantastic afternoon sitting out in the sun sipping wine and chilling. Great outside space. Great fun

Had a fabulous Sunday Roast here, we ordered the whole roasted lemon and garlic chicken, it came with all the trimmings and not only was it very tasty but fantastic value for money,

Laid back atmosphere, Good staff and the Guinness is good and cold. Food reasonable and reasonably priced and with a great position on the corner.

Great spot any time of the day or evening. Friendly staff and good food. Fantastic all round experience and will look to make this a regular visit.👌

The food is fresh and vital. The family who own it also delicious. Add Druse music and i don't care that i'm seated on an alley, left hip uphill right hip down.

The Montpellier Wine Bar is iconic in Cheltenham. It could do with a redecoration, but still has a charm and on a pleasant evening offers an excellent spot to sit, chat with friends and watch the world go by.

Came on way for afternoon tea at Malmaison - wished we had stayed as it was Friday and the champagne offer stared at 3pm - when we left we both had gin and tonic were able to sit out and watch the world go by. Friendly staff.

Thought the food was very average but good value for what you pay. Service wasn’t great and a little slow. Don’t think the waiters had much experience. Probably better for just a drinking place!

Well two reasons for this report. Firstly Sunday roast is the best bearing in mind you will pay over £10 but less than £15 . Further they care .Gravy good ( very important) , meat good, spuds spot on, veg varied.

Great corner location, and on sunny days the outside tables were always full. But sadly, our food was only average (piri piri sauce poured over a chicken leg) and the Ladies loo's left a lot to be desired. That said, for the price paid, it filled a hole & was good for people-watching.

Called in for a mid-week light lunch. Went for the 2 course meal of steak and chips followed by chocolate brownie for myself and Eton mess for my husband. £10 per head. This was a really good choice. Portions were plenty for lunch time and food was well presented and served. Well done to Jasmine and Roxanna for their hard work keeping up with looking after the bar, taking orders and waitressing. They were both welcoming and friendly.

I visited here as part of a work drinks party, and I found the set menu with unlimited wine for two hours as enjoyable as it was debilitating. The risotto was a nice eat, although it was slightly light. Altogether, more vegetarian options would’ve been welcome as the steak and fries plate seemed far better value in comparison.

When we walked in late in the evening for a drink we felt like we were intruding in a private staff party. Rude

Dreadful, waited 25 minutes on a Thursday night for a cocktail that tasted of ice and soda water. No apology from the staff. This place was good 10 years ago, many better places now

drove in to town after a mid afternoon party Order drinks service ok.. But like all of the drink bars in this area they are not cheap.. Glass of cola £3;50 its nearly all water with a slug of cola add ative and if they put in a load of ICE well its £3;50 for water. But is the same every where ...

Wonderful spontaneous lunch in a relaxed environment. My Steak sandwich was delicious. Excellent meat with cheddar cheese and caramelised onions. Special mention for the bar staff. A faultless experience.

A wine bar implies that its wine only but as well as a nice friendly service they do a couple of local real ales on tap. Interesting pavement seating area to watch the world go by. Never eaten there so can't comment.
