This was the loveliest Christmas meal. Might even be the best Christmas meal I’ve ever had. The staff have been so accommodating, friendly and helpful. The table looks very festive with crackers and decoration. Would recommend

Great pizza, good drinks, nice staff excellent comedy :)

I came here for a gig. First time I've been. Arrived early and ate a burger and chips and had a beer for £15. The food was good and my service was quick. I noticed others waiting a long time. The gig space above the pub was great and I had a brilliant evening with a few more beers.

I usually come here for the talks or comedy events they have upstairs, which are excellent btw. The main bar downstairs is nice and spacious with a commendable selection of beers.

Came for a comedy night, wasn’t sure what to expect but really good set up, good lively pub downstairs serving all the classics and great pizzas and some great local beers (including Bristol Beer Factory Milk Stout which is excellent) plus packed out comedy gig upstairs, really nice crowd and top notch comedy. On weekday events they have pre event special of pizza plus a drink for £15 which is pretty good value. Only slight improvement would be putting a second server on bar upstairs before the gig started but queue went down pretty quickly.

We went to a comedy show, which was amazing! The venue is perfect for smaller performances and has a good variety of food and drinks.

A superb night watching The Great Baldini in the upstairs events room. Really great fun, and a super venue. Highly recommended.

Jackson saved our Sunday! Alongside being the nicest person in the hospitality game, he went above and beyond to squeeze our table of 6 into the already hectic roast lunch service. And it was fabulous - as usual! Cheers buddy, we really appreciated it 😁

We hosted our engagement party in the chicken shed function room at Hen & Chicken. They were so accommodating and lovely from start to finish. The food was amazing - we had so many compliments on the pizza buffet. It was everything we wanted for our venue! Definitely recommend!

Went to see Russell Hicks (fantastic comedian) and travelled 2 hours to do so. What a great venue, superb bar, pizza looked amazing, good selection of beers and a happy collection of locals and visitors. If I lived in the area I would go in often

We held my daughter's 30th Birthday Party in the Chicken Shed function room, and from the day we made initial enquires to the event, the staff were extremely helpful and friendly. The room itself is great with its own bar and was perfect for our party of 55/60 people. The pizzas were very good and well received by our guests.

I went on an event night, my food took 45 mins so I asked a waitress to go check on it and it had plainly been sitting under a heat lamp as it was Luke warm and dry I didn't complain as I was starving and was going to the event at 7 The pub gets incredibly loud in the lead up to the event as people queue to be let in Considering most of their events are for neurodiverents it's incredibly overwhelming even with the silent mode of loops I wanted ribs with no salad and extra fries instead I was told that wasn't possible god knows why putting a few extra fries on is a big deal I tried to book a table before going and was told there were no availability but when I got there there was plenty of tables All very average

Love this pub! Mostly for the comedy box upstairs, great Saturday nights with several circuit comics each week and a great atmosphere! The pub is also decent with a good menu and plenty of beers on tap from the local brewery! Top notch!

Nice venue, booked a private table, whilst we were adding an additional table the barman/manager decided to go on a bit of a power trip and asked us to ask for their permission to move any tables... you're OK mate, we'll just go to another pub in future! - Shame one power tripping manager ruined the atmosphere, the rest of the staff are really friendly.

The worst place on North Street by far staffed by an incompetent and inexperienced team. Sadly we've had to go numerous times for the comedy and events and always have a terrible experience with food not arriving and poor service. Most of the good reviews are reflective of the Comedy Box which isn't accurate to the day to day pub which is all but separate.

We had a friend's birthday here, brilliant service and good food.

So disappointed went out for roast dinner went there before & was lovely but was terrible only 2 roast potatoes very greasy slow cooked pork not slow cooked plate full of cabbage sent it back had pizza! Ok

Have been here to watch comedians, have a meal and just for a drink. When my friends and I had a meal prior to watching a show, our seats were reserved upstairs, so we were able to relax over our meal. Atmosphere was buzzing & busy

It's a great place for food & drink, only criticism is because it's all wooden inside, it gets incredibly noisy when very busy.

Definitely one of the best pubs in Bristol - always lots going on here and awesome selection of local beers, love the alcohol free choices on tap!

Not keen on pub food but this place exceeded expectations. Food was tasty and we left with satisfied full stomachs.

Good to watch football , the pizza tasted like tomato puree with a bit of cream cheese in it and was really floppy. Nice friendly bar staff and decent priced pints

Great venue. Good talk on ADHD. Could do with air con upstairs. Could smell toilets going up the stairs. Enhanced cleaning would make the place perfect 👌

Good pub atmosphere and fabulous events space

Service was extremely slow for both drinks and meals. After a long wait the first two meals were delivered. After having asked staff where the rest of the meals were two more were delivered, approximately 10-15 minutes later, and the final two after a further few minutes. Food ordered was pizza, lasagna, pie of the day, and two Sunday roasts. Not impressed with the roasts in particular, the gravy was far too salty and the roast potatoes were soft. Overall cannot recommend this establishment.

Booked for a special birthday dinner. Shocking customer service. Met with Stern face lady who clearly struggles with any customer service experience or just didn’t want to be there in my opinion. Ordered meals for five of us and one request for additional toppings to one pizza. On delivery of the meals we questioned why one of the additional toppings had been omitted only to be told I didn’t hear you ask for it. So there it was pizza as it was and so be it. If the establishment was busy you could maybe overlook this however it was empty and no need to book so unable to forgive such a sloppy service. Would I visit again absolutely not. Waste of £140 as had better £1 pizza from supermarket. Perhaps chefs should stay off their phones and cook what had been ordered! Shame as always try to support local businesses and encourage others to visit but unable to do so on this occasion.

We attended a funeral here with over 250 people the bar staff were fabulous hars working and couldn't do enough for you. Highly recommend

10/10 for the barman who made bloody marys for us even though they weren't on the menu, they were great!

Wow…….Sunday lunch just like your granny used to serve up! Sublime roast chicken breast, individually prepared and wrapped in its own skin, perfectly sweetened parsnips & carrots, roast potatoes to die for and the most flavoursome gravy that I have had in years! Lovely staff and great atmosphere.

Roast dinners are class, go give them a try!

Wow. I usually dislike Sunday Roasts at restaurants/pubs as they are rarely better than what most people can make at home but I honestly think the hen and chicken was one of my favourite roasts. It’s really chill in the venue. We were served by Jackson and Nina. Jackson kindly showed us around the hireable rooms in the venue as we were looking at getting one booked. Jackson sold it very well! We had a table of 9 however one of the meals ordered was forgotten and was brought to the table after everyone else had finished. I’m not one to make a fuss and tbh mistakes like this happen! However, no consolation, reimbursement or offer of apology by means of discount or free drink etc. nobody in our party was fussed as we continued drinking. The service from both Nina and Jackson was really good. Most people give the generic “how is your food?” question a few minutes in however Nina came back and checked all was ok, clocked that a dish was missing from the table and raced off to get the issue fixed, offered drinks, and was really friendly in general. Now, not only was the food really delicious and frankly had no faults with great options for all interested parties (Vegan and veggie etc) but whoever is in charge of making the mousse or whoever came up with the recipe needs a pay rise and a pat on the back. I’m a cheesecake guy but this has changed my mind. I will be going back one day purely for that mousse. It also has chantilly cream on top which is a favourite of mine. I had no idea mousse could taste THIS good. I will definitely be going back as I’ve been to a few roasts in the area and was disappointed however this place delivers. Cheers!

Great comedy show upstairs, fully booked. Great beer selection

Nice selection of beer, great pizza, nice staff. The toilet could be better but it's a pub and it's part of the character 😄 We had a lot of fun and it's a place worth visiting.

Great Saturday evening, the pub was buzzing and food was delicious. Love all the starters / nibbles, arancini, halloumi sticks, whitebait, croquettes.

Great atmosphere in the pub when there is a performance on in the theatre. The cosy theatre is lovely too, been here many times.

Walked in hen and chicken today been coming here for years with my family we bought a round of drinks to be then told we can’t order a pizza if we havent booked a table this needs to be addressed on the website or notices around to let customers know before ordering drinks! The restaurant has no customers as you can see in the picture

Skip the Sunday roast! Maybe the pizza or burger would have been a better option because the roast dinner was really not good. For £16 pounds it consisted of 3 potatoes, 1 carrot, 7 shreds of cabbage, 2 bits of dry pork belly, 50p size bit of crackling and granule gravey. I asked if that was it and the waiter agreed it wasn't much so got more potatoes and carrots from the kitchen, this arrived after we'd finish. The only good thing to come of it was that we know not to go there for food on a Sunday again.

It's not my cup of tea, a very hipster, and pretentious, but that's the norm with modern pubs inside. It's very open with lots of seating staff, which are friendly, etc . Foods meant to be good, though I didn't find out as it was absolutely rammed after a bears game. I'll stick to my old skool spit and sawdust pubs, but it might be the boozer for you

Great venue for music, not eaten but coffee good.

Great choices ranging from pizzas, small plates and large plates with a variety of dishes! We came for lunch on a week day so it was quiet and not so busy.

I usually attend the Jazz Club on Thursdays. It's very busy on Comedy Nights. Good selection of craft beers but beer on pump stopped a while ago. I heard the pizzas are good but haven't tried one. Can be very noisy! 🎺 🍕🍻

Second visit for a roast, first visit was ok. Second visit was what can only be described as a shambles. Obviously they were staff short (not for the first time) and the staff that were there did try their very best and worked hard. Orders were wrong or duplicated and the quality was just not great. Premium prices changed for very average roasts. Good pub, but will not be going for food again, unfortunately.

Such a lively place - wonderful atmosphere, great food and service. We also went for a show at the comedy club located upstairs, which was great fun!

Expensive and tiny portions for food! Luckily there was an oowee next door for afters.

Bar Staff couldn't get our order right, ended up getting food poisoning from the desert, which was wrong. I ordered the Chocolate Mousse but ended up with the Lemon Posset

The Sunday lunch was nice, but we were sitting on benches, which I don't feel is great when eating a three course meal. Especially with elderly grandparents. (We did request not to sit on them). The food was great, but they had already run out of some of the starters, which, considering, is a small choice, was a little disappointing. We waited quite a while for food, and they forgot our dessert and instead of apologing, just told us they were very busy. It was extremely loud inside, so we struggled to have a conversation. I'm not sure I'd return again in a hurry.

Good pizza and a decent pub. Advisable to book especially if there is "something on" upstairs. My Dad paid for the meal, so I can't comment on the price. Parking is limited to the residential side streets. This is not somewhere I would visit generally because I live in east Bristol, but as we were seeing Stephen K Amos, it worked out well. It was extremely warm upstairs and the pub was almost empty when the show had finished around 10:20pm. We did aslo have to get a stamp on our hands as well as a physical ticket, which I thought was a bit odd.

Great pub with good food and friendly staff

They gave me (a vegan) pulled pork instead of the beans I ordered - then when replacing them, it took so long that the rest of my table had finished and I still hadn't eaten. During the wait, I also saw several tables get the dish I had ordered. Staff were apathetic through all of this. Really rubbish experience, would not recommend.

A good solid pub with a comedy club upstairs. Really enjoyed a comedy evening here, and there were a few spare tickets available on the door for purchase allowing my partner to come last minute (cash only, cash machine next door in co-op). Alongside a large selection of IPAs they also served frozen margaritas from a slushi machine which was prettttty cool! Bar upstairs and downstairs - upstairs one is quite small though and was only open before the comedy and at the interval.

I’ve had an up and down relationship with this place for years. Today was the worst. The staff were serving who they liked the look of, and all congregating at one end of the bar like it was a social occasion, and not work. It’s always a great feeling to be stood at the bar for 5 mins only for one of the clique to stand beside you and get served first. Not sure how I managed to hold my tongue. The owner needs to be onsite more to take control of this behaviour that has made us walk out and pop to The Malago instead.

INSANE atmosphere and great comedy nights

A brilliant comedy venue. Superb comedians, beer, staff, clientele, the works!

Sad food I'm afraid, should have checked the Ingredients on our pizza - Who makes a pizza without cheese or tomato sauce - and then burns it! :-( Very salty all round - at least the drinks are ok!

Really friendly staff and the roast was delicious and reasonably priced. Always a good vibe in the H&C pub.

It's ok, nice enough place, comedy nights can be fun

We went for the Sunday roast. I'll start with the good things - excellent service, a great roomy interior with lots of natural light, pleasant neutral decor, background music not too loud. Delicious coffee and chocolate mousse pudding. Sadly, the mains weren't great. The chicken schnitzel was supposed to be served with fries but wasn't, and we had to ask for them (we did get them, and they were fine). The schnitzel and salad were very nice, and so was the roast beef, but the Yorkshire pudding's crust was burnt and the roasted potatoes were hard and dry. All in all, four stars.

Atmosphere was great and the comedy in the studio was fantastic. Will try different food options next time.

The food has gotten so much better in here recently, and it's still my favourite place to get a good local beer in Bristol. And as a bonus the pizzas are absolutely world-class

We dropped in for a few drinks after a meal, we both had gin and tonics, the staff were very friendly and there was a great atmosphere there. We sat outside and the outside area was full, very chilled and relaxing. Top marks

Came here with my boyfriend and dog for some food after work one evening. The staff were very friendly and provided quick service. The pub is very dog friendly and had a great atmosphere. We ordered a pizza and loaded fries to share and it was delicious. I will definitely be coming back to the Hen and and Chicken again!

I am not one usually inclined to write reviews, but I felt I had to do so after the great experience I recently had when I came to the Hen and Chicken with some friends for food and drinks. The pub itself has a great buzz/atmosphere where the staff were very friendly and attentive. I find a lot of pubs nowadays lack this, but the Hen and Chicken certainly doesn’t! We all really liked the selection of local beers that were available at the bar. I would recommend the “Wanna Go To The Sun” pale ale. The food menu offered a good variety of dishes, I ordered the squid, a margarita pizza from the dedicated pizza oven and loaded pulled pork fries. Everything ordered was made to a high standard, which were all delicious! I would certainly recommend a visit!

Attended for an event upstairs. Good levels of staff so quick service getting drinks and pizza smelled delightful. Looks like they hired more staff and got better service compared to previous reviews!

Went there to play Blood on the clocktower which was great. But also the place itself is vibrant, spacious and full of musical events like Jazz and open mic. Will visit again.

Had a good visit for a pint and a pizza - pizza was tasty but took a second to get there! We sat outside which was nice, inside was a little quiet and didn’t have the same pull as the garden. Definitely worth a visit though!

Great pub with reasonable priced drinks for the area. Pizza is good here also think they do daily deals. Cocktail club & similar. Also they have a comedy club out back. Big stand up comedians have done sets here.

Bit disappointed that the dirty fried is literally half the size! The portion is fit for a childs menu!!

I love this place. The bar staff are friendly and welcoming and happy to discuss alternatives when asked. I ventured upstairs to the Comedy Box to watch Lucy Porter in Be Prepared. What a fun evening. Steve and his team put on great shows and run a smooth venue.
