Been going to this pub for Sunday lunch for ages it’s the best Sunday lunch I’ve had at a pub, food is amazing the pork, lamb, beef, cauliflower cheese, potatoes, Yorkshire puddings all lovely, always hot I don’t have veg so they always put extra rosters on, the only downfall is you sometimes can be waiting quite a while for it, but it’s normally very busy, but is worth the wait. Will be booking again very soon. Puddings spot on especially sticky toffee pudding.

My husband and I decided to book to have Sunday lunch today. It was our first visit so we didn’t really know what to expect. The bar staff were friendly and helpful and we had a seat upstairs which is much better if you want to have a conversation as downstairs is crowded and very noisy. We ordered our food at the bar and waited. The menu states everything is cooked fresh so we settled at our table with our drinks. The food came surprisingly quickly although once we saw what was on our plates the speed of the food delivery was explained. I had the roast topside of beef Sunday lunch and my husband had the chicken Sunday lunch. The beef was of the pre packed processed variety which made it very sinewy and tough. The chicken portion was only big enough for a child and very dry. The biggest disappointment were the vegetables. We both had the sum total of three green beans on our plates and to add insult to injury they weren’t even cooked so totally inedible. I had ten thin slices of carrot but two were cremated and again inedible. The kale was tough and may have been dipped in water but was not cooked and the red cabbage was a mauve mush so heavy in cinnamon it should really have been in a Christmas cake. Both plates were swimming in gravy which for us was not too much of an issue but to some may have been very off putting. Three unappetising halved roast potatoes which were definitely not freshly cooked and a Yorkshire pudding that according to my husband was not too bad (I am gluten free so didn’t have one) The menu gives you the option of ordering extra veg for £3.00 which we did discuss as I love my veg but I decided against it as most pubs give a good serving so it would be superfluous. I can’t help thinking this is a way for the pub to make extra revenue as to be honest they can’t possibly say the lunch comes with vegetables given the very inadequate small servings on the plate. The tables upstairs are not ready for diners so you have to ask for salt/pepper/condiments etc which in a dining area is unacceptable. In conclusion: 1. Staff are friendly and seem efficient 2. The cost of a roast dinner at £13.95 with practically no veg and a promise of freshly cooked food but delivers processed meat and potatoes is quite frankly an expensive rip off 3. Inadequate preparation for diners who have reserved a table Would I return? Not even if it was free Should you visit? If you don’t like vegetables and prefer processed food to freshly cooked roasts which can be found in many eateries in Bristol but otherwise give this pub a wide berth

This pub badges itself as family friendly, unless you actually have children - if so childish behaviour is frowned upon. As a local, I have watched the owners transform this pub from somewhere where all felt welcome - happy to while away hours spending disposible income - to somewhere where you feel told off for existing. The kids' play area - swngs, slide and wendy house - has disappeared, and when children try to make the most of the outdoors areas, they are seen as a problem. Good luck surviving through the coming cost of living crisis with the narrow band of ageing locals you have managed to keep onside, given the Crafty Egg and Forge & Fern coming to the area. Very disappointing and very unwelcoming.

We visited here for Sunday lunch on a recommendation. The menu had the usual options on it so we made our choices. Prices seemed a little high but not excessive. We were asked to open a tab which seemed to involve keeping our debit card behind the bar to ensure we paid when we left which seemed a bit weird to say the least! The food was decent enough although all of the meals were swimming in gravy. Portion sizes were good although we could have all done with more veg. Service was excellent, chatty and engaging. The noise was the worst aspect - the tables are close together and it was so noisy that we actually left without coffee or the usual post lunch chat!

Visited this pub in March with the intention of buying lunch and having a few drinks. The pub claims to be dog friendly. My dog jumped up onto the seat next to me and within a minute, as I was telling him to get down, an woman stormed over and started ranting aggressively at me in a raised voice about how my dog needed to be well behaved (he is) and on the lead at all times (he was on the lead) She was literally pointing her finger in my face and then stormed off before I could even speak. The complete lack of respect was unreal. Apparently she is the owner, which in my opinion just makes it worse I visited here about a month before in a large group for a roast and we were seated next to the kitchen which was hardly ideal and we were chastised by two unfriendly waitresses for getting in their way... maybe don't seat large groups in narrow spaces. Just an idea. These three people need to look up the phrase "customer service" as I'm pretty sure it doesn't involve snapping aggressivly at your customers and walking around looking like you want to punch everyone in the face. Staff 0/10 Food 4/10 Do not recommend unless you have a kink for being spoken to like crap.

I reviewed this in 2015 and have been back many times since. It's the best for Sunday lunch in this area by far.* Lockdown actually brought this pub much more into our world. They have covered tables and heaters in the garden, and had an app (which we wish they'd bring back!) so you didn't need to go inside to order and refresh drinks. We go for Sunday lunch here at least once a month and it's great. The dog appreciates the yorkshires none of us eat (though they look epic) and the food is always epic. The service is friendly but things move a little slow; don't go here if you're in a rush, but do go here if you're looking for a leisurely Sunday lunch. The food is so good. *I literally just had Sunday lunch somewhere else and thought "why did we do that?!" and that's what prompted a new review.

I went there with my family for a Sunday roast. When we sat down we were immediately asked if we wanted to set up a tab. We said no as we were just going to have a drink with our meal. When the drinks arrived we were asked to pay for those, which we did. Five minutes after this another member of staff came to ask if we could pay for our food (before it had even arrived). We found that very strange and frankly over the top. The food was ok, the meat was nice but not as many trimmings as you’d normally get, also the veg was cold and they just poured hot gravy on top. Will not visit again.

I arranged a 50th Birthday Party for my mum, held on Friday 19th November 2021. I had the room booked from 4pm - midnight. I arrived early to set up the room. I found it was really dirty with spilt drink marks across the window seals and on tables, crumbs on the floor, old bunting/popped balloons from previous events and finger marks all over the mirrors. They left me with a spray bottle and cloth, I assume expecting me to clean up after the last event which I did not do as it's not my job or what I paid for. A lot of the furniture was old and came apart easily. We had to set up the layout of tables/chairs ourselves even though we explained what we wanted during the booking process. We also expressed we will need an AUX cable/connection in order to play music on the night to which they confirmed they have this. When setting up, I trialled the AUX to make sure it was working before everyone started arriving but it didn't work. I had to use the Bluetooth option but this kept cutting out once the room was full of people. When I raised this with one of the staff, they said they've been telling the landlord the AUX is broken for ages but he hasn't done anything about it. I paid an extra £10 per hour to have the bar open and bar staff all night. The range of refreshments offered upstairs is extremely limited compared to what is stored at the downstairs bar and many of my guests had to go downstairs to order their drinks. A lot of my guests also reported one of the bar staff was rude, uninterested and rolled her eyes when we sang happy birthday and brought out the cake. They expressed to me that she just didn't seem like she wanted to be there and tried to use the excuse that she was 'hungover'. This is not acceptable or our fault. I also had to pay £75 charge to bring my own buffet food. This is supposedly for plates, cutlery, napkins and clean up. There is no option to do this yourself. Majority of the plates, cutlery and napkins were not used as we only had finger food and clean up clearly isn't done to a good standard as explained at the start. Overall they received £275 from me for this quite frankly below standard service/facilities and I will not be considering this function room again.

My sister had her delayed 40th party last night which was moved on from last years lockdown. I went in the day with a few family members to decorate the room, on arrival it looked very messy & there seemed to be lots of ropey furniture strewn across the room. We spent a considerable amount of time moving the room around to suit the crowd we had coming on the evening, removing the scruffy chairs onto a space in the hall, which we were going to ask the pub to move which they had agreed to do prior to the day. We also litter picked beer matts & straws Etc that had been left on the floor. The landlord arrived whilst we were there & snapped at us because we had removed the chairs to a place he said blocked his fire exit. There was no discussion he then brought all the ropey Wood chairs back into the room & changed them with the nice chairs we had decided to use ( because they could be stacked) We just all looked at each other in surprise at his attitude. We decided just to carry on with getting the decorations done and not let his rudeness ruin the day. They evening went brilliantly although customers from downstairs were constantly up & down using the upstairs toilets & a group of girls decided to come in and dance to the disco, which my sister was fine about but there didn’t appear to be much separation from the pub customers & her party. Not ideal in my mind but then no surprise. The bar staff were really lovely thankfully. The Buffet was ridiculously poor for the price paid & definitely not enough food for the quantity of people paid for. Very disappointing. Before we all left one of the bar staff said it would be ok for my sister to pick the balloon arch that was across her large number 40 by 12 the following day. This balloon arch was not cheap & with her daughters birthday in a few days they were going to use it in the house decorations. My sister unfortunately didn’t get to the pub until 12:15 by which time the landlord had popped all the balloons!! When my sister said she had arranged to come & pick them up he just said ‘tough’ she has returned home in floods of tiers. If you are considering booking this venue for a party please think again & see what else is out there. The landlord is unwelcoming, rude and bullish. Oh and don’t waste your money on the buffet because it’s poor food, overpriced and will not be adequate for your needs. Book at your own peril

I booked online, this involves just sending an email, and I received an email back confirming my booking for Sunday lunch. We arrived and were shown to our table and immediately a young guy came and took our food and drinks order. A couple of minutes later the manager/owner came over and brought our drinks and the card paying machine and asked for payment. I was a little surprised that I had to pay before we ate but just paid anyway. Before he had even left our table out food was served to us. The food was nice, we both had roast lamb, and had no complaints. However, after we had eaten my husband pointed out that all of the tables where we were sat hadn’t been asked for pre payment and they hadn’t had their food immediately on ordering; it felt like we were not welcome and were being rushed. When the manager/owner was passing I asked him if everyone had to pre pay and he seemed a little embarrassed and didn’t really have an answer, tried to say that everyone else had a tab going. I asked why we hadn’t been offered it and again, he had no answer. My husband just said that we should leave, he said that as the only black person in the pub it was a little bit concerning that we were the only ones that had been asked to pre pay. Such a shame that we won’t return as the food was good, but it’s not pleasant to be made so unwelcome.

Absolutely gorgeous roast at the Cross Hands Fishponds today! The veg was fresh and cooked to perfection, some of the best roast potatoes I have eaten out! The cauliflower cheese was extra, £3.50 but again was utterly delicious and looked to have had whole grain mustard in it, super tasty!!! Massive yorkies, which are standard on every plate and ordered extra as my son my loves them. Only £1 for extra yorkie and was surprised that meant 2 extras, bonus! My son had the chicken, pictured far left and there was loads of it. The meat was succulent and portion size was very generous! My husband and I opted for one lamb rump and one beef and shared our meet. They were both packed full of flavour but the lamb edged it for me we prefer my beef a bit rarer-but that’s not a criticism as was still very tender! Soooooo pleased to have a superb roast on our doorstep, can’t wait to go back! 9/10 our table was booked again at 2:30pm, so I would say booking is essential to avoid disappointment!

Clearly reading some of these reviews either the usual chef was off sick or people who have left reviews for this place don’t know good food. The 3 of us ordered a different burger each. All I can say is shockingly bad. Bun was dry. The chicken burgers were over cooked. The pork belly resembled charcoal. The beef burger was bland and tasteless bar having the mustard on it.Honestly MC Donald’s burgers trump this place.Did we complain? No as by the quality of the three meals any kind of replacement would of been equally as bad and it was enough to put us off.Very sad that a local pub produced such low quality food. Would NOT recommend at all.Have eaten in many places all around the world and in my opinion....a sausage sandwich I bought this morning in kingswood from a sandwich shop had more taste, flavour than the burgers served here. Fact it was £10 a burger too just add insult to my injured tastebuds.Morrison’s do chilli burgers which are insanely good.Seriously guys either find a new chef or have some quality control in place. Will not be eating here again and will be telling people to avoid.

We had booked for Sunday lunch on 3rd June for an extended family group who had come together for a birthday celebration over the weekend. We had given our meal choices some days before so we anticipated a smooth meal as there was ample time to prepare! Wrong! Table was booked for 1pm and we arrived punctually. After half an hour a young man came to ask what starters we had ordered. We explained that we had only been asked to order in advance the main course and we could order starters and desserts on the day. Three starters were ordered and we asked if they could start serving the mains as those having starters would be fine with that. The starters eventually arrived at 2pm, one hour after arriving. The request for mains to be served was repeated. The first mains came out at 2.40pm, one hour and 40 minutes after arriving. They then came out spasmodically until the last one at almost 3pm, only it was not the last one! One chicken meal had been missed and when it finally arrived my daughter sat and ate alone - not what you would call a family meal. Children's meals elsewhere are normally served first (to keep 'em quiet) but not here, they were amongst the last to come out from the kitchen - not good for fractious young children who have already patiently waited for over one and a half hours. When we were asked if we would like to order desserts we felt that it was best not to, there was after all a life outside we did not want to miss. On the plus side the food was good and after acknowledging our complaint, the bill was reduced. But they do need to get their act together and deliver the food promptly and all at the same time!

My vegan son and my daughter had the Nut Roast and said it was worth the trip to England for. (We are from the US) The roasted potatoes were excellent as were the veggies and Yorkshire Pudding. We were too full to have Desserts. Will definitely come back to this English Treasure.

Couldn’t fault anything about my experience here. I was presented with absolutely delicious, mouth watering food. All the staff were friendly and attentive and the surroundings provided a pleasant ambience. The pub itself has a classy feel to it, it’s not like any standard pub. The chef takes great care in selecting the best quality ingredients and this is great value for your money. Looking at the menu you can see they cater for all, as they have a great selection of food. If you eat a variety of good food this is the place for you. I’m looking forward to trying the Malaysian dishes next. Excellent service all round. Highly recommend!

I'm a Malaysian, and the new Malaysian menu evokes fond memories of my days growing up in Penang. OK, you can't get some of the ingredients which would really authenticate the food, but the chef has made a pretty good fist of it. The satay was to die for, as was the beef rendang, which was oh so tender! I can't wait for when the chef decides to introduce desserts. I have it on good authority that the gula Melaka will take pride of place, and it will be anticipated with great relish!

I went to the Cross Hands with a friend on the day that the chef launched his new Malaysian menu. As a lover of this cuisine I was anxious about having to choose just one dish. I needn't have worried. Chef Liam was offering 'a taste of everything' for a great value price. Starters included chicken satay, with peanut sauce, cucumber and onion(Forget pale imitations, this is the real thing); spring rolls, again authentic cuisine; siew yoke, to die for and tempura squid with lime and soy dressing. The mains included a taste of char kway teow, kari kapitan, nasi goreng, Tofu stir fry, beef rendang and steamed sea bass with garlic and ginger sauce and served with white rice and broccoli. What a mouth burst of flavour! This is Malaysian food at its best. There was not an artificial additive to be found. My friend was blown away by the experience and was checking her diary to see when she could return with her grownup son and daughter. I can't wait until my sister visits to go again. No really, I can't wait! I will be there again this week even though my sister won't be here yet. Did I mention the friendly and efficient service? What a great place to go for an excellent evening out!

We went to our table well placed at the back by the play area so the kids could have a good time. The food was great and it's a shame that not that many people come. I had triple cooked chips done to perfection. Some had burger a few extra chips could make it perfect but for around £10 including a pint it is a very good deal.Overall I had a great birthday, lovely food and service. I will come back.

We went for a friends birthday celebration on Sunday. We hired the room above, there were thirty six of us.... we were allowed to go in early to decorate the room with banners balloons etc..... the staff couldn't do enough for us. Friendly, helpful and worked hard to get our meals out with military precision... the food was delicious and my only criticism was that it could have been a little hotter.... but that was understandable with the amount of meals.... and maybe thicker custard. Having said that it did not detract from the tasty food and whole enjoyable meal.... in fact I'm going again on Thursday.

Having chosen the most expensive Sunday roast, I expected a little more than the portions I got. 3 roast potatoes???I ordered a spiced apple crumble ( which said it was served with ice cream), when it arrived it was served with very thin custard and in a ramekin - £6.50 for a desert in a ramekin is not good value. The cross hands had potential but sadly I won't be eating here again.

I've eaten here before and as I recall it was good. However my recent visited I ordered sausage and mash, my friend had the gammon steak. I was disappointed with the portion size and I'm don't have a massive appetite! There were not even any peas, sparse gravy (described as jus on the menu) This really is basic pub food and although lacking in quantity, was really very nice. For the price of £10.00 I really shouldn't have had to go home in search of cheese and biscuits! This pub is NOT central Bristol and with pints at £4.25 I'd hoped not to be leaving hungry still. I mentioned portion size had got smaller and was told this would be fed back to management. You need to be better value Cross Hands!

This is the best Sunday dinner around. Its delicious, great gravy and good veg . Really nice. However its v pricey and sadly the service doesnt match the price . Our two adult meals arrived ages beofre the kids meals .. (all roast dinners) Our dinners arrived but no cutlery , finally managed to get someone's attention to ask for some. She went to the kitchen and bought out a tray full and proceeded to un load the whole lot onto the trolley whilst we just sat waiting . Eventually I just got up and went and helped myself from the trolley . We then asked for horseradish.. what a mistake to make ... the meal was nearly finshed by the time it arrived. We have been for food a few times and there is often some issue - one meal cold etc .. its such a shame as the food is generally good, its so annoying that the service lets it down.Essentially, a lovely Sunday meal but at restaurant prices I expect better service.

Easily the nicest pub in Fishponds. We're a ten-minute walk away and pass five pubs (and three bar-restaurants) on the way. Definitely worth the extra walk! Hubby & I are often to be found here on a Sunday afternoon/evening, as well as frequently during the week, and it's always a great atmosphere. Staff friendly and helpful. Good ciders and some decent reds. Have always been impressed with food. Steak Night on Thursdays a particularly good deal (it's faaaar too tempting every Thursday!) Family-friendly environment, with games & books too. Nice garden area at the rear. And it's surprisingly pleasant to sit out front in the summer even though it's at a busy junction. Fishponds always good for a spot of people-watching... Beautiful historic building too. Have been to one of the comedy nights and keep meaning to go again.

I've had some enjoyable meals here and going back a couple of years ago it was my favourite place to eat in Fishponds. However after my last visit I don't think I will be returning for a while. I paid £10 for a burger and chips and an extra £1! For cheese. The chips used to be great, crunchy golden triple cooked chips... These were not. I could of made better ones at home. They were over browned and not crunchy at all. Cross hands used to do an amazing burger that used to come with little gherkins, pickled red onion and a homemade tomato relish. I don't know why they changed it! Now burgers just come with chips, no condiments. They don't even do their own tomato ketchup like they used to. I don't mind paying good money for good food, but in my opinion it is now over priced for what you get and the food is cooked half heartedly. I wish I would of gone to the Burger Joint just down the road.

Thursday night, Steak nights are good value for money too and the triple cooked chips are to die for. My only complaint, and the reason I didn't award 5 stars is that the menu is often restricted because some choices have run out. We were able to make a special atmosphere befitting a wonderful woman's life.Staff were extremely accommodating and allowed us to set room up as we wished. The food (a buffet) was lovely and all very reasonably priced. The food is excellant and is beautifully served. It has a safe garden area out the back which is excellant for small children, with swings and a climbing frame, in fact the whole place is child friendly. It is the most expensive pub in the area, but it is worth it; no telly, no pool, no jukebox, no gaming machines, that's why it is worth it. It does have customers though. Many of the other pubs in the area have TV (with programmes talking about sport), pool, jukebox and gaming machines, but no customers and they still haven't twigged.

Started badly. Butcombe was awful, but it was replaced without any problem. When it came to ordering, well, it would have been quicker to tell us what WAS on the menu as so much was unavailable. I now see a previous reviewer highlighted this but clearly nothing has been done about it. The starter of the rather grandly named "Heritage tomatoes with Goats cheese" was a shambles. 2 tomatoes thinly sliced with some crumbs of goats cheese. It was diabolical. The mackerel pate was rock hard. The fish and chips were OK, although the whole meal was seriously overpriced. It was such a shame. It looks like a fabulous pub in an imposing position but on a Saturday evening it was practically empty. The owners need to try much, much harder. I understand there was a "tasting menu" taking place on the same evening at a price of £49 per head. I don't know if that is where the service was going but maybe the owners shoul concentrate on getting the basics right. I not be visiting again.
