The Heifer in Richmondshire

Visited for Sunday lunch with our two children. The food was fantastic (recommend the trio of meats Sunday lunch and the fish pie), loved the extra jug of gravy that comes with the meal. We were visiting the area and booked ahead incase it was busy. We were made to feel so welcome by the landlady and the gentleman that served us. Would highly recommend and will definitely be returning next time we are in the area.

Great food, fab service and always accommodating. Perfect for all occasions. Love the seasonal menu and the variety especially seafood choices. Cocktails are pretty good too!

Our favourite local. Nothing is too much trouble and we're always welcomed warmly. Serving some of the best food in the area and drinks in some of the best glasses in the area, the Heifer in Scorton is definitely worth a visit.

The couple running this place really know what they're doing. Such a lovely relaxed vibe, well chosen menu selection, all the food was of really high quality, perfectly cooked and well presented. Great choice of beers, wines and other drinks too. Only wish we lived closer!

This is a lovely pub which is dog friendly and my wife Jenny and I popped in today having been for a lovely walk around the nearby Scorton lakes The walk takes about an hour and a half, and this is just the job to give you a bit of thirst and then to head to this fantastic place There is a good selection of beers, wines and spirits and the food is absolutely fantastic Jenny started off with some scallops and pork fillets and for a main course had pink duck which looked absolutely superb Settled for a home-made burger, which was really delicious Our hosts Pauline and Adrian made us extremely welcome and as I say, the Pub is dog friendly The physics is very nice. The toilets are very clean. We very much look forward to our next visits

Visited on way back from Richmond for Sunday lunch based on reviews and we were not disappointed. Owned by a lady and her son who did everything they could to satisfy my wife'd dietary requirements and both were lovely, friendly and helpful. Beef was excellent as was Yorkshire puddings and veg. Would be going again in future.

Just aother quick note on the 5* experience at the Heifer We live locally and as a family use the Heifer as a treat, and it never disappoints. The service is always first class and the food always sublime. The latest masterpiece out of the kitchen is the fish of the day. I've travlled the world and scoffed at 2* Michelin restaurants and not had anything better. A magical combination of flavours and texture in one mounthful. Mouthwatering just writing about it. Well done Aidy, Pauline and Gavin.

We chose here for our Wedding Anniversary lunch. It did not disappoint. The staff were welcoming and friendly. The Rhubarb & Custard Elton Mess was divine.

My husband and I along with six friends visited this absolute gem 💎 of a restaurant on Sunday 17th March. The booking reservation was only requested the Tuesday before and so I was dubious they’d be able to accommodate our party. I left an excited voicemail on the Monday evening and lo and behold Adrian (the owner) called back the following morning. After a brief chat Adrian confirmed he’d be able to accommodate the eight of us if we could provide a pre-order. Ab-so-blooming-lutely I replied. I sent the pre-order late Friday afternoon and within an hour or so the chef called to discuss the menu requirements of the one guest who has a shellfish allergy. The chef was so helpful with what they could / couldn’t do and so a decision was easily decided up. Later that evening Adrian emailed me to thank me for the pre-order and promised to ensure we would have a fabulous afternoon with them…..and wow how right he was. The Heifer did not disappointed at all. From the moment we walked in I knew we were going to love it. The bar area was busy and had a lovely cosy warm feel. Staff were so so attentive. We were whisked to our table and drink menus provided promptly. The Heifer has a great selection of wines, cocktails and lagers. We were spoilt for choice. Adrian took our drinks order by memory (still impressed by that Adrian haha) which were served within a few minutes at which time we were asked if we were ready for the chef to cook / serve our food. We were ravenous so it was an all round yes please. Starters arrived in no time. The presentation was fabulous and food just delicious. Clean plates all round. For mains it was roast dinners for all. Good sized portions along with side dishes of carrots and shredded cabbage not to mention a jug of gravy. We couldn’t have asked for anything more. Again the food was cooked to perfection. The chicken was the nicest I think I’ve ever eaten. It literally just melted in the mouth. All in all our party gives The Heifer a big fat 10 out of 10 for their all round perfection. Lovely friendly staff, fabulous tasty food in a cosy modern restaurant. What’s not to love. This was a first visit for us and seriously we felt like friends before we arrived. Went with my mum and sister on Mother’s Day. Staff were all so lovely and personal. The food was delicious, had roast beef Sunday dinner and chocolate torte for desert. Both 5*, will return as is half way spot for us. Excellent service/food/location

Really lovely lunch today. Had been recommended by neighbours and certainly exceeded it's glowing review. Very welcome host and delicious food and wine. Will most definitely be back with the doggies. Really good layout inside so would be comfortable to take them and enjoy the other items on the varied menu. Definitely worth a visit.

Fantastic Sunday lunch with family & our dog. We were made to feel very welcome and service was great throughout the meal. The bar area is welcoming and we were very impressed with the quality of the food. The desserts were delicious. The heifer is definitely a pub we will visit again.

Food was lovely, the taste was great but in my opinion expensive. We didn’t receive a particularly warm welcome, we felt we were a bit of an inconvenience as we hadn’t booked and the lady wasn’t sure if she would be able to squeeze us in. She said she could fit us in in the end but that we’d have to order very quickly before the next table arrived. We agreed, we knew what we wanted but then she didn’t come back to take our order for another 15min so it all felt a little awkward. We enjoyed what we ate but to me the bill for the 4 of us was overpriced for what it was.

Had a table with friends booked for a Saturday night and despite the chaos of the 'Scorton Feast' going on outside, we had a quiet relaxing time with delicious food and attentive service. My starter was scallops with chorizo followed by an amazing burger for my main. Many more exotic sounding dishes were ordered by my friends and all were eyed with envy when they arrived, which didn't take long. I don't often wax lyrical about restaurants but the food was so flavoursome that I came away thinking I hadn't eaten that well in a very long time. If you want superb food in the Richmond area, then you really must try The Heifer.

Called in on a Saturday evening and booked a dog friendly table in the bar. Unfortunately, we'd picked a super busy evening. The waitress said it wasn't normally that busy and kindly moved us into a quiet corner of the restaurant as the dogs were getting a bit nervous. The food is amazing, the best cheese souffle I've ever tasted, and I wasn't disappointed by the chicken parmo either. We didn't stay for pudding but would call back in for lunch if we're back in the area.

We have dined here once before I think last summer, called today and sadly had to leave as I couldn’t face ordering and eating a meal in my coat, I actually zipped up my coat when we went inside, the whole place was absolutely empty and Baltic freezing, tip.. turn on your heating and you could get customers ❄️❄️❄️❄️ huge shame as our food was beautiful last time we ate there

Had a beautiful family lunch here. Everyone enjoyed their food from 2 years old to 75 years old. The quality of the food was incredible. The scallops I had were amazing and my wife said the same about her croquettes. I usually choose my meals based on which meat I fancy but decided to go for the roasted vegetables tagine and I was not disappointed. It was really tasty and all of the flavours worked really well together. It was our first visit but we will 100% be back soon.

We travelled 50 miles for my 50th birthday treat on recommendation from a work colleague and we were not disappointed. The food was absolutely out of this world. A restaurant booked in advance for our first meal having arrived in North Yorkshire on holiday from Norfolk . I hadn't checked prior to see if we could bring our doggie in with us . Unfortunately when I called to ask we had been seated in the restaurant area which didn't allow dogs . However the lady I spoke to said leave it with her and when we arrived she had moved us to an area in the bar that we could take our doggie in . The food was amazing - the best meal out we have all had for a long time . Starters ,mains and dessert alike . Service was great . The only thing that wasn't to our taste was the decor - a bit too modern / American diner style for us but otherwise perfect .

Simply genuine. A real country pub serving inspired food, with no fuss. My spinach and cheese souffle starter and lamb main were wonderful. Coupled with a pint of Timothy Taylor and a good red wine, I can say no more. Really worth a visit.

We came for lunch after reading the great reviews. The place is spotlessly clean and the staff really friendly. We had the carrot, orange & coriander soup and the haddock fishcake for starters, then the tempura prawns and the burger for mains. We could not fault any part of the experience and loved it all. The two course lunch deal is extremely good value so do go, you won't be disappointed.

Sunday lunch out with my family, the first since lockdown was eased. The food was really excellent, we agreed one of the best ever Sunday Lunches we’d all had. My grandson thought the food perfect! The service was equally good: everyone was very friendly and efficient. Good value too! Brilliant!

My wife and I have eaten here many times before and are always very pleased with the service and the food. So well prepared and cooked. The Chef certainly knows his flavors and seasonings.The interior of the pub is surprisingly modern and contemporary and is always spotlessly clean.Due to the covid restrictions the pub and the evening did seem to be lacking in the atmosphere it normally has, (no fault of the staff), the owner certainly tries to have a chat. The service was quick and very efficient and the food as always was delicious. The burger was cooked to perfection and the flavor was extremely tasty. Love the pub, love the food will definitely return when all is back to normal.

This pub was not one we'd been to before so we chose my birthday to sample their Sunday lunch. The interior had a surprisingly modern and contemporary feel; however our table appeared to be in a void between the two main rooms and the continuously swinging door (into the kitchen) close to where we were sitting became something of an annoyance and tempered the atmosphere of the place. This was the only blip though as service was brisk and very efficient and the food was created by a kitchen where the chefs certainly know how to cook and present their food. My son and I had the lamb kofta which was a subtle mix of flavours and extremely enjoyable, Our roast choices were also equally satisfying. Fortunately we had room for a desert and my peanut butter parfait with fantastic caramelised bananas completed a great eating experience. We're delighted to have found a new place that serves excellent food and we will return.

Both had starters, I had lamb kofta which was delicious and dad had crab cake. Both very tasty and not too much just before a main meal.Mains I had a club sandwich which was the best club sandwich I’ve ever had! Tasty grilled chicken and bacon. My wife and I booked Sunday Lunch in advance of our week long holiday in North Yorkshire. We arrived 30 minutes early having travelled some distance. We were welcomed warmly and informed that being early was not a problem and immediately shown to our table.We both had a Sunday roast, my wife chose the beef, whilst I selected the trio of meats. Both excellent quality and the amount of vegetables supplied separately was sufficient for more than the 2 of us. Good choice of local ales etc to accompany the meal and whilst the desserts were limited in number, they suited our needs.Limited parking but on street parking around the village green met our needs. Worth driving 'out of town' to this small village to experience a lovely meal in smart modern surroundings, with attentive but not intrusive staff.Recommended

Booked for lunch, based on reviews on tripadvisor. The pub sits in a nice village and is an attractive building. It was quiet when we went (only 2 tables) so we had no problems parking in front, however there is no car park and on street parking is limited near the pub.The pub itself is very modern inside and we felt lacked a bit of atmosphere. Felt more american diner than Yorkshire pub.Covid 19 precautions all looked very goodIt was lunchtime and we went for 2 courses for £12 (or 3 courses for £16). Starters were small but very tasty, main course we had fish and chips which was fine (but not great) and the deserts were very nice. All was very acceptable but not exceptional. Service was good Overall very good value if you happen to be nearby but let down by atmosphere whilst food is good I don't think it lives up to the ratings on tripadvisor

Had two meals here over the course of the week - Sunday lunch and Friday’s steak night. Both were excellent. Cooked and served beautifully by friendly staff. Made us and the dog feel really welcome in the comfortable, stylish bar area. My husband really liked the hand pulled local ale too! Very impressed with the hygiene measures in place to tackle the current COVID outbreak - felt very safe throughout the evening. Would definitely recommend this lovely pub/restaurant.

Found this pub by the reviews online and the good offer of 2 course lunch for £12 - including Saturdays. Very clean and modern inside and fully set up for covid with screens at the tables and a glass entrance section where you sanitise your hands and scan the QR code for your location. Good choice of drinks behind the bar, and friendly helpful service. We had the falafel and normal burgers for mains which were well cooked and came with piping hot chips. For dessert we both had the cherry frangipani which was incredible - 10/10 !Small and friendly pub in a sort of out the way little village but worth the trip. No real parking, but lots of places to park around the large green of Scorton.

Heading to the lakes and saw this on TripAdvisor not far from the east to west route from north Yorkshire to the lakes. Small place, maybe 15 tables. Booking recommended. Awesome food. Scotch egg starter was terrific and Sunday dinner was great too. Kids menu strong at 3 courses for a tenner (big dessert portion). Fish and chips come with bits which is great. A fairly intimate setting, with enough space for allow for COVID. The staff are wonderful and had a good rapport with the table. The food was fantastic and so reasonably priced - as was the wine list. They were happy to make us cocktails they didn’t strictly serve (which were to a great standard). Looking forward to returning.

Had a fantastic experience at the Heifer. We booked a table for lunch as a stop off on our way to the Dales. After reading the other reviews and menu we had already decided what to eat and the food was amazing. Smoked haddock was beautifully cooked and they catered for my dislike of mustard by removing the sauce, so very obliging. Hubby had the burger which was fresh and very tasty. We finished with the frangipan tart.. OMG, moist and fabulous. The restaurant has taken great care to meet the needs of COVID and we felt very safe. The staff were very friendly and attentative and we would not hesitate to return and recommend to others. Thank you Heifer for a fabulous lunch, this restaurant is a gem.

Been here several times. First came across it when we were looking for a great place for Sunday Dinner, and was not disappointed. Have been back multiple times to sample a great menu and have never been disapointed. This is a lovely pub and eaterie in a great location over looking Scorton's unique raised village green, close to Yorkshire Dales and the lovely town of Richmond and also a good place for a stopover if you are on the Coast to Coast. Some great local walks along the Swale or around the remains of an old WW2 RAF airfield which is just behind the pubThe staff are always very friendly and attentive and the food is cooked perfectly and is great value if you are looking for quality food.

When I booked a table for 4 at the Heifer, I advised the restaurant we would be dining to celebrate my Wife's 60th Birthday.The restaurant is in a lovely building and in a great spot but, unfortunately, when we arrived we were shown to a table that was laid out with 3 places side by side on one side and one on the other. This seemed a strange arrangement in the circumstances so we asked the waitress if we could change the layout. I understand that Covid has created a lot of stress for workers in hospitality but she was very, very surly and grumpy in responding that it was laid out to ensure social distancing and that basically we should just accept that. We asked if we could move to a more to a conventionally laid out table that we could see further into the building, because it was a Birthday celebration. She did allow this although it was very, very clear that she was not happy to do it. One of our party said 'that's wrecked the night now- she'll be a pain all night'Sure enough she was aggressive when we initially asked what beers were available then, asked what lagers were available. She said that 'he only asked what beers were available not lagers' as though there was a limit on what questions could be asked and she basically wanted to have an argument about that. At this point we should have walked out but we had, up to this point, had a really nice day and didn't want to ruin it by ending up going for a takeaway or stressing out trying to find somewhere else to go on such a special occasion.We ordered our food and drinks in a frosty atmosphere and, despite her best efforts, really enjoyed the food which was sensational. the Chef is amazing.As the evening progressed she did mellow but our conclusion was that spending over £140 for a meal for 4 in that atmosphere was a total waste of money however outstanding the food might have been as our conversation afterwards all related to her behaviour. Her lack of warmth and lack of ability to recognize what a special occasion it was and to try and help that go well by looking after us in a courteous, professional manner wrecked the night. A great shame but i couldn't recommend the Heifer at all.

Popped into this pub as it was half way through our drive home based on good trip advisor reviews and were very glad we did.Firstly, the food was excellent, from the chicken and chorizo terrine, to the king prawn tempura and frangipane sponge - everything was very high quality and extremely good value.What really impressed me though was the degree of covid preparation this pub has put in place. They were by far the best prepared venue I have eaten in; sanitization on entry to the venue, acrylic shields between tables (which were already well spaced), staff wearing face shields and during our visit we saw them sanitizing surfaces on a regular basis, even though we were one of very few customers at the time.Well done The Heifer

This place was a real find. Looking on TA for somewhere to eat on our short break in North York’s and after falling a bit flat with our first night choice, this looked like a good bet for our second night. It didn’t disappoint! Clearly a popular place as we didn’t expect it to be almost full on a wet Wednesday night. The food, surroundings and friendly welcome (with excellent service) explained why. All 6 of us enjoyed every dish served up and the only disappointment was that they had run out of the Scotch egg starter - which sounded delicious. Anyway, no matter, the ones we had tasted great and were followed up with equally tasty (and generously portioned) mains. Highlights were probably the smoked haddock topped with a poached egg and the fish and chips but, to be honest, they were all met with favourable comments. Good wine selection to compliment the food so, all in all, somewhere well worth a visit. We’ll definitely be paying another visit when in the area. Give it a try, sure you will enjoy.

The weather was not too good and our daughter said this pub seemed a good place for a light lunch..What an understatement. The decor is modern ,bright and full of classWe had a set lunch. Which the starters included fish cakes , calamari soups etc ,all excellent .my prawn tempura was perfect .coffee also very goodIf we come ba k to ghe Richmond area again ,we will most definitely book for dinnerService was very friendly and genuineWell worth booking to go , i suspect it is very popular

A last minute decision. What a great night. Excellent food and fabulous service provided by Adrian. Tempura prawns and Fish cake starter followed by sea bass with wild rice and Thai green curry sauce. Husband had venison burger. Top quality food with excellent service in an upmarket relaxing setting. Also noticed that in these crazy Covid times, very well done, absolutely spotless with high level of hygiene. Faultless. Thank you for a great night.

We booked The Heifer because of the excellent reviews on trip advisor and we were not disappointed. We sat in the bar area because we had our dog with us but it was beautiful, very comfortable and modern, more like a restaurant than a bar. The service was excellent and the food was amazing. I had the cheese souffle followed by the smoked haddock which were both absolutely gorgeous. It's not cheap but luckily we were there on a Wednesday night and could take advantage of the dine out to help out scheme. However I will definitely return next time I'm in Richmond and will happily pay full price. Definitely the highlight of our holiday!

We visited for our anniversary dinner. We eat out a lot and had thought about where we could go on a special occasion.We chose to come here because it’s consistently good food and service.We were not disappointed again this time and had a lovely meal with wine and beer to accompany the food.

Went for dinner with friends, food was tasteless and bland. I have never been served by such a rude waitress and we had to chase constantly for any type of service. The main course was undercooked and had to be sent back - very disappointed and was not worth the price (£18 for a main meal!).Never have I had to wait 40 mins just to be given the bill.Do not waste your money on the food, it has no right to call itself a restaurant.. very very disappointed

After having read all the hype , I was Les than happy with the sharp attitude of the lady taking our order . The steak was not very good . It was a badly cut . With grizzle left on . I’m was a butcher for 15 years . I know a well trimmed steak when I have one . The peppercorn sauce was very slightly flavoured . My partner enjoyed her meal and recommended it . Although when she asked if she could have a roasted tomato , the lady said “ it really doesn’t go with your dish and had to re confirm . If I pay £100 on a meal we would like it how WE like it . And again for our sweet we asked if we could have the ice cream without the brownie . We were refused saying “it only comes together . Well we won’t be going to the heifer together again .

We have been to a few local restaurants recently but The Heifer has put in place by far the best Corona virus measures, from hand sanitizer before you enter, tables socially distant, staff wearing visors and a large sign explaining everything, it's the safest we have felt while being out for food. Also the food (as always) was delicious and the best in the area. The staff were helpful and the owners always make a point of having a conversation. Even though it was very busy the service and quality of food was outstanding.

OK, ...its been some time since we were last in and again we were blown away. Starters to dessert we can not fault a thing. From Pauline, Ade and Helens welcome as you walk in to the "see you again.." as we left it was an amazing night. Fish cakes, twice baked soufflé and the boys Tempura prawns were delicious. The steak and the burger were superb..but the star of the show tonight was the Haddock with spring onion mash and parmesan -the fish was cooked perfectly. If you've never been then definitely book and make a visit.. if you've been before then book and make a return visit..Thanks all the staff at the Heifer..see you soon..Keith, Jo and the boys

Absolutely stunning food, the lady host is a delight too! We had the Belly Pork & Smoked Haddock, and a hot brownie pudding, photo is of scraped clean plate! Will definitely travel down from Durham again for a round 2, 3, 4...

We ate here on the evening of the 11 August 2020. It is a very popular place overlooking the lovely village green which had been immaculately kept. The staff were very welcoming and efficient. The food was amazingly fresh, well presented and tasted great. We had all three courses and didn't regret a thing. This place is definitely a top local attraction and one of the best eateries in the area. I highly recommend this restaurant and will return when next in the area.

Great to return after a 6 month enforced absence. A friendly welcome, good selection of drinks and quality food and service. The gluten free selection is second to none in the area. My only gripe...............oh, there isn’t one, faultless!
