The Haywain in Gloucester

The front of house was kind, helpful an inviting but when we wanted to order food we were told they had no steaks so we ordered a starter an decided on a different meal to be told they did have steaks , so when the starter came out we was rushed into ordering our mains quickly as the kitchen wanted to close early because it was quiet, (their words), So we ordered a medium rare sirloin an a gammon...(no eggs for the gammon) when the food came out the sirloin was medium well at best an had clearly been done in a rush....that is said steak in photo ...cross hatch grill marks on one side an just flipped an left to over cook on otherside...got a refund in the end but wouldn't recommend eating here, also the men's toilets are falling apart broken toilet flush handle an a cracked hand dryer ...just alot needs doing here, management need a check.

Want to personally thank Mia and Donna for being so attentive and thorough with my allergies tonight. I have a "top 14" allergy and an unconventional allergy, too, and they made sure to assist with and cater to both. Amazing team, absolutely recommend the gluten free food (and the sweet potato fries are delicious, too).

Really poor experience. Food was burnt, booked a table for 4 at 3.45pm but no one knew about out booking. Finally someone at the bar just said sit wherever. Food was expensive and over cooked. Kids sausage was raw! Not going back and dont recommend sadly

Nice place, and new staff seem really friendly, but come on the prices for drinks are an absolute joke. Will not be using it as my local anymore. I'll go elsewhere, such a shame

Typical community pub, pub grub and beers, etc.

We had a group Xmas lunch here & it was excellent. Members have dietary needs that were fully sorted without any bother whatsoever. Debbie & her crew served us very well, making us all feel like valued customers.

We had a christmas meal with 22 of us and it all went well and the food was great. Debbie really went above and beyond to make us feel welcome and look after

Went in today for the festive menu. On entrance Grant served us our drinks and got us to our table.He was very patient and polite. Very willing to help. Debbie served us our food at the table. Great to see a happy face and she was so accommodating. We were made to feel very welcome and treated like a regular. The food was lovely and the portions were so good. Thank you Chef. Looking forward to visiting again and hope to see Grant and Debbie again, being great at what they do. A real credit to the company. Bravo and thank you Haywain Quedgeley.

Just had two mixed grills and had asked for the steaks to be medium rare but when it turned up it was over cooked and the rest of the meats were all dry too but our waitress Debbie went out of her way to give us a refund and was very apologetic 10 out of 10 for Debbie 1 out of ten for the food

The restaurant was tired, there was mould on the ceiling and we had to move tables. The furniture was tired. The service was slow, the sweet potato fries were overdone. The tea pots were grubby and chipped.

Bar man on at 11.10 pm at 29/11/24 very rude. We said had we missed last orders, he said yes they had rand the bell twice. None of of us had heard the bell including me and people standing at the bar. He then said that it was our problem not his. Very rude so consequently we cancelled our meal at the hauwain the following night.what a shame. Staff member does need training in common courtesy and manners

We had Sunday roasts but the chicken was overdone.

After visiting your pub for the past 8 years after I take my partner and her mum shopping opposite at Tesco where she treats me to a pizza and drink I will say that I am really disappointed with the food today. Debbie had reserved us a table with all the necessary items to eat with and we thought was great however we waited over 45 mins for our order at which time my partners mum got panicky as she does not like walking down her path at home when it gets dark,so we had to take our food home. Debbie was also upset and could not apologise enough for the delay.The pizza was undercooked so we had to put it in the oven to eat it. NOT HAPPY AND WE MAY THINK ABOUT ANOTHER VENUE AFTER SHOPPING IN THE FUTURE

Always come here regularly, was refunded but Debbie and Cole couldn't be more helpful

Visited the pub today for the first time an it was lovely. Nice an cosy and the food was very tasty. Our server Kayce was very chatty friendly and efficient at getting our order sorted. Thank you Kayce for making our visit so enjoyable. We will definitely be back again soon.

Went in for lunch today I had a rump steak wich was cooked exactly as Requested and was excellent my partner had the lasagne wich she said was very nice.we were served by Debbie who was very pleasant and friendly the atmosphere was very welcoming. Definitely 5 star all round.

Great place for a tasty lunch. Our dog was allowed in too. We were given a warm welcome by Amber on a very wet cold lunchtime.

Even though I had an issue with my food (supplier issue not chef on site) the staff were quick to react and offer me alternatives and a refund. Staff were friendly and attentive, particularly Debbie and the gent behind the bar. We would come again.

I would like to give a big shout out to Kaylee who did an amazing job at the Halloween party. My kids had the best time. You should be very proud to have the team that you have working here, everyone was so friendly and made us feel very welcome. Kaylee went above and beyond for everyone. Every child receive a sweet even if they wasn't there for the party. Can't wait for the next one.

My mums gammon was not cooked, in fact she could not cut it. The lovely waitress saw my 83 Yr old mum struggling and took it away and got her a fresh cooked one

We feel that the time lapse between the meal being ordered and subsequently delivered to us 40 minutes later, despite not many tables being occupied at this time, that our order was forgotten and perhaps left under a heat lamp due to the nature of the overcooked food that we finally received.

We popped in on the way through for a cheap & cheerful midweek evening meal. The prices weren't as cheap & cheerful as I remember unfortunately. The bar & restaurant were not super clean, meal portions were ok, just. Gammon was lovely. Guinness wasn't great. Overall everything was adequate. The service was nice and quick mind.

The worst food I have ever paid for. I went for some simple lunch with my family and ordered the chicken and mushroom pie. It was terrible, the pastry was hard, mash potatoe wasn't fluffy, tastey, creamy potatoe, it was some nasty paste which I didn't want to put in my body. Even the peas were hard and under cooked, how can you mess up peas? I didn't complain because honestly I don't think they could have done anything to improve it. Unfortunately others had told me before that the food was terrible but I was hungry so I thought I would try myself, at least my nephews chips were good. The service was nice and I enjoy a game of pool but we went home and ordered chinese food.

As soon as we walked through the door josh behind the bar was extremely friendly and helpful. All the meals was at a very good standard and very tasty. Debbie who served us was very friendly and we also shared a joke with her. We meet up with friends every month on a Thursday to have one of your specials . Nothing to improve on this visit .

Always great and friendly service, great atmosphere for a pub, solid food, and you're always made to feel welcome as soon as you walk in (Kaylee especially always has an amazing smile as soon as she sees you!) Very good little pub I find myself in far more often than I care to admit!

If you're not starving when you order, you will be when it arrives. We're locals, and we went recently to give it another chance after avoiding the Haywain for a very long time due to the drinks on draft giving us all an upset stomach, on more than one occasion. Big mistake, it has actually got worse! We went at lunch on a bright sunny day, but it seems more dingy and dark on the inside than ever before. The interior looks very tired. The food took a very long time to arrive, and it wasn't even busy. We only ordered bottled drinks as we still don't trust anything on draft there. The atmosphere felt flat. It wasn't bright and cheery like some other local pubs. Its only saving grace is the serving staff are lovely and do make an effort. Instead, I'd recommend the Haywains close sister pub, the Barn Owl, which is also a Marstons if you want the same menu. Otherwise, staying in the vicinity for local pubs and their grub, you'll be much better off spending a little bit more and going to either the Thatch, The Friars, or the Bumblebee.

Despite awarding 4 stars for food, service and atmosphere, I'm awarding an overall 2 stars purely for the cleanliness or lack if it in the venue. It's decor is tired, it's not been updated since the refurbishment of 2010, it's tables feel dirty and sticky to the touch and I often have to wipe the table down myself with my own travel wetwipes. The women's toilets are in a very poor state and it's clear that they aren't checked on a regular basis. I only visits this pub because a friend uses it often as it's near to their home. I normally frequent the Haywains sister pub, The Barn Owl which is much nicer in decor and cleanliness. It's not a new thing with the cleanliness, it's been like it for years and it spoils what would otherwise be a fantastic pub.

Food cold but it was put right straight away and why are dogs allowed in restaurant when not a guide dog as it is not very hygienic to have dogs at the next table

Well what can I say, I came in with some friends for so food the service was fantastic that I received from Kaylee, she couldn’t do enough for us, Ryan that manger also made us feel at home

Second time being there. Each time had a vegetarian meal, both times not what was written or described on menu. Thai curry on menu said included bamboo shoots or sugar snaps. Today the salad said it included quoina, brown rice, kale and soya beans. None of these were included and just had cucumber, tomatoes, salad leaves and a few slices of pepper. The upholstery is a mess, chairs with half upholstery missing and leaving you having to sit on just foam. Staff were friendly. Fish and chips looked cracking.

Went in there after an exercise class, around 12 ladies, couldn't have coffee as the machine was broke, I had tea lovely pot but anyone else had a mug as they never had any more teapots, I would of thought a large company like that would have more than one teapot. Think that was our last time there.

We regularly visit the Haywain and as always had a great visit today :) kids had fun in the garden and we enjoyed food and drinks whilst getting some sun. Sure we’ll be back a lot over the summer

Visited the Haywain for the second Sunday on the trot whilst in Gloucester to buy a car. On both Sundays the service, food and atmosphere was excellent. For a Sunday roast I would honestly say that if you’re in this area book a table at the Haywain. The staff were excellent as was the service. Fantastic, and when we are back in this area we will be back at the Haywain.
