The Hare & Hounds in Scarborough

The food is always superb, tonight we had chosen a meal from the Specials board. “The Whitby Chip Shop Board” I can’t stress enough how delicious this sharer board for two was. With mouthwatering fish and locally sourced sausages cooked in a light crispy batter, beautifully tasting cod and smoked applewood fish cakes, breaded Whitby scampi, mushy peas, gravy, bread and butter, triple cooked chips and tartare sauce. Definitely one to choose next time - let’s hope it’s a regular on the already extensive menu

Lovely meal with a good choice and specials board. I chose the baked cod with king prawn and chorizo butter sauce with wilted greens it was spot on. My partner ordered the duck which he thoroughly enjoyed. We ordered lemon pavlova cheesecake and a cheeseboard to finish along with a glass of port each to accompany the cheeseboard. All in all a very good meal with attentive service. Excellent prices for the quality of food! Would recommend and would certainly return.

What a great find. The steak pie was freshly cooked and beautifully done. Everyone around commenting on their food. Lots to choose from and a good heart meal. The beer was well kept and very good. Was staying in Hawsker for a week and ate in The Hare and Hounds every night with a good size plate full and a good variation of veg as well. We can highly recommend this pub for all the meals that we had as we had a real variation from the menu. All staff were very pleasant and couldn’t do enough for us.

What a fabulous meal we have just had at the Hare and Hounds, steak and ale pies were described as being the best pub pies ever eaten and my cod with mornay mash and prawns was equally delicious. Staff were super friendly despite our dogs not being the best behaved. Would highly recommend and if we were staying here longer I’m sure we would be back.

Amazing Sunday roasts. And great service. Huge Yorkshire puddings and lots of veg too. We'll definately be back again. And dog friendly too.

Called in for lunch twice this week whilst holidaying in Whitby. It is was a lovely pub. staff were friendly and the service was very good. The food was amazing. I had flatbread with spicy chicken and stir fry veg with chips. So delicious. My husband had the seafood linguine which he absolutely loved and our son had salt and pepper chicken wrap which he really enjoyed. Definitely a place to try. Which we had a little pub like this near home .

Called today for lunch. We sat in the beer garden. I jad mari.ated chicken on a flatbread with chips and salad it was absolutely gorgeous. My husband had the steak pie which he declared ' probably the best pie I have ever had". Fenerous portions and really good value.

Phoned to book a table, only 5.00 available. It was empty when we arrived but soon filled up so make sure you book! We both ordered the steak, mushroom and ale pies, they were as good as they looked on the fb page. The staff were friendly

Nice place, nice food, nice staff. A nice cosy environment that we can highly recommend. The food was first class and quite good value.

We look forward to eating here every time we visit our holiday cottage in Fylingthorpe. It's always consistently good and gluten-free being well catered for. Sunday lunches are the best we've had. It's also very dog friendly (although we tend to leave our dogs at the cottage, it's still nice to see dogs being welcomed) always friendy and welcoming.

Difficult to put into words really. We're visiting family locally with friends and wanted to find a pub close to where we were staying. I know the area well and had visited the pub years ago with my Mum and Dad. WHAT a transformation from all those years ago. A great atmosphere, REALLY friendly and welcoming staff and superb food. Perhaps a slightly limited choice on the evening menu and the pricing reflects the quality of the food. We had our evening meal here nearly every night of our week's stay and also a family reunion lunch. BUT, for me, the biggest feather in their cap is how welcoming they are to dog's. I have Great Danes and the team went out of their way to accept and accommodate them in a fairly limited space. If I was having to date them it would be a very easy 9.5😄

Friendly staff, we went on the chinese night and it was lovely. Everything was spot on, priced well at £45 per couple. Nice and busy on a Monday evening and im not surprised.

A lovely and genuinely, warm welcome from the landlord. Great, family friendly pub, with super warm wood burners. Excellent selection of drinks, food was delicious, 4 of us with 4 different mains, which we all thoroughly enjoyed. We were staying for a few days locally and look forward to our return. Just climbed the hill at Robin Hoods Bay and ready for something to eat . This place was recommended by the lady in the chocolate shop, and it didn't disappoint. Wife's Birthday and two Labradors in toe, no problem a table by the log burner. Amazing specials board and a simple but hearty menu had us both ordering Pies , with whitby chowder to start £8 it was chock full of fish , just wamhat was needed for a cold day, then it was Game Pie for the Mrs & Beef n Ale for me , have it yiur way from mash to chips veg or peas no combo a problem. For £18 a pie I was hoping for somthing special and I got it. !!! 9/10 only thing that stops it being a 10 was the burnt pastry and I am BEING PICKY because it was amazing !!! Great pint of beer. Lovely food, great ambience plus they couldn’t do enough for a severe allergy sufferer like me. The waiting staff were delightful and nothing was too much trouble. I had salmon with rice and broccoli and my daughter had two delicious starters and cheesy chips. All cooked from scratch so we could have everything done how we wanted. I felt very safe as I’m usually worried they’ll give me something I’m allergic to in restaurants. Not so here, they were professional and careful. Recommend the food to anyone and we will be back.

Just been on with our dogs for a snack and drinks. Adam and his staff were excellent and made us feel very welcome and the food was lovely. The locals were also very nice and we will definitely be going in again when we are next in the area.

I came with 5 of my family for Sunday Lunch and we all agreed it was absolutely delicious. We ordered the Roast Pork, Turkey and a Pie; all of which came with beautifully cooked vegetables. I had the Turkey and it tasted like the best home-cooked roast without having to lift a finger (except to raise a glass or two!). I had a Mars Bar Cheesecake for pud, while others had Apple Crumble and Custard and a Chocolate Brownie - all of which were delicious. Service was great and really friendly.

Stopped by for a birthday lunch while walking part of the Cinder Trail from Whitby. Amongst other things, we had the famous steak, mushroom and ale pie, the hot beef sandwich and fish finger sandwich - all delicious. Easily the best food we’ve had in quite a while.

What a fabulous find, a great traditional country pub, the food was amazing, freshly cooked at a great price. I had the steak ale and mushroom pie, it was amazing. All 5 of us thought the food was fresh, of good quality, presented well and served with a smile. Definitely a further visit will be on the cards when we are in whitby next time.

Whilst staying in Whitby for a week, we booked a table at The Hare and Hounds for Sunday dinner for the two of us. The staff were welcoming and friendly. We both ordered roast beef ( I ordered pork but, unfortunately, was advised they had none left), that said, the meal did not disappoint. The portion was very generous and everything was delicious. So much so, that we ate more than we should. (It might be good for those with a smaller appetite to be able to order a smaller portion) I would recommend the Hare and Hounds highly for the food, service and atmosphere

We were extremely pleased , this place has a lot of great reviews but I like to decide for myself, well I can tell you the food was absolutely delicious, if you’re in the area then don’t hesitate to go, probably better to pre book as it can get busy. I had the black pudding starter 😍😍 fantastic, then chicken & ham pie again excellent, wife had soup and stuffed chicken breast off the specials board. I just wish I lived closer so I could become a regular here.

We booked this place in advance for a 2pm Sunday dinner for 4. Two of us had the Roast Turkey, one had the Roast Beef and one had the Fish and Chips. Two of the party had starters. All meals were very good and portion sizes, particularly the amount of meat were excellent. The staff were not particularly welcoming at first but became a little warmer as the time spent here went on. Very nice pub with great parking and a very good outside area for when the weather is better.

I booked this pub for a Friday evening meal, the first of our short stay at a nearby caravan. It did not disappoint, the food and service were both very good as was value for money. In fact we returned for the Sunday roast which confirmed our view that this is a good place to eat (and drink).

3rd time in Whitby but first time at hare and hounds. Ended up having 3 nights of meals as food excellent, staff attentive and general ambiance of the pub very good. Spoke to owner to compliment him on pub overall and he was very gracious. With 50 years catering experience under my belt it was a great pleasure to find a fairly young owner and his staff who were prepared to go the extra mile. We will be back

Spotted this place on Tripadvisor while driving around on a visit to the coast and it looked spot on so called in bang on 12 as they opened. Gorgeous pub, well furnished and looked cosy. We ordered Fish and Chips and a double burger. Both were gorgeous. Son would have been happier without the tomato relish on his burger but it scraped off easily (he's fussy). The fish was probably one of the best i've had in recent years, could tell it was fresh and also fresh chips. Didn't have room for pudding. Wouldn't hesitate to go back.

We had a fantastic meal here with friends while we were on holiday. The resturant was busy and we were pleased we booked prior to.going. I chose the Indonesian seafood curry which was rich, creamy and totally superb and the rest of our party had the seafood linguine which was excellent. Would go back again if we visit the area again.
